The Preacher Guys
Transformation Part 1 (The Body)
[music] This is the Preacher Guys podcast with me, Aaron Goens. And Charlie Patterson, Charlie Patterson III. That's right. Coming to you from Family Worship Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. If you want to find us, we're at 1217 Highway 53. Highway 53 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. And we have services at 10 a.m. on Sunday, and we have Wednesday Night Bible Study with dinner at 6 p.m. And the study starting at 7 p.m. We're coming to you to bring you the word of God in our weekly discussion. Good evening, Aaron. Good evening. And have you ever noticed that I say "wint day"? What? "wint day"? "wint day"? Is it every "wint day"? [laughs] No. I've never noticed actually. Yeah, yeah. I just noticed, in the, uh, in the outro, how I always say YouTube, but, YouTube, but. You can find us on YouTube, but, and Facebook. I don't know why. That's the pastor coming out in you. Yeah, I over-imphasize. The fire! My God, the fire! I over-imphasize. It might be a nervous thing. Is that the wrong way I know? But anyway, it's good to be back. It is good to be back. Yes. Since you didn't want to join me in Parker, last time. Hey, where was I? Family event. You have to see a play, I think. Right? Isn't that what it was? Yeah, that's what it was. And then we, uh, I was going to tell you, we got there, and there were a lot of tickets. It was like, we waited, and they were sold out. So I was like, well, crud, this whole night just went- [laughs] You didn't even get this either? No, yeah, nothing even happened. Oh, no! Yeah. And, uh- Oh, you should have walked in. Well, at that point, I was like, they're probably elbow deep in the podcast at this point, so. Yeah, I think we were, too. 'Cause it was so long, it had to be two episodes. Yeah. Well, that's good. It saved us from- It kept us a little bit ahead of schedule, just in case something happens. We always had that to fall back on, so. Right. All right. So tonight, let's talk about being transformed. The only form of trans that I find acceptable transformed. So you're thinking about- From the word of gone. Like, um, super saying, right? [laughs] Dragon Ball Z. That's basically all I know about Dragon Ball Z. Oh my gosh. This is the word right there. Well, good. This is over. At least you knew his name. Right. Oh, I know some other names. But I was trying to google the actual definition of transform here. I'd rather actually get it from, like, the Greek perspective. But to transform means to make a thorough or dramatic change in the form, appearance, or character of. So that is what transform means. It's a dramatic. It's not something that goes unnoticed. Right. Right. Everybody's going to know. So put this in the context of, this is the most popular verse that uses the word transform in the Bible. It's Romans 12-2. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. To be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Which, of course, only happens through the word of God. Right. So, like he says in other verses, we become new creatures. Right. All things have passed away, behold, all things become new. Literally, dramatic change. When we come to Christ, from who we were to who we are now, people who knew us from both past and present should see a dramatic. Yeah. I would say dramatic. Like, this is not even the same person anymore. Kind of like the old, what happened to you? Kind of like, who is this guy? Right. And Jessica actually talked about this maybe not yesterday, but the Wednesday before on like the butterfly. You know, caterpillar going to a butterfly. Right. When it's in the chrysalis, it like gooifies, which I never realized that's what's happening. It just turns to goo. And when it comes out, like, it's not even, not even part caterpillar anymore. Right. It's whole DNA and molecular structure is completely different. It's a dramatic transformation. Right. Which is what's supposed to happen with us. So, I'm at work this week, and I'm got my little notepad that, you know, team leads and stuff carry around. I'm just thinking about these things by being transformed. I'm like, okay, there's like three main areas. I mean, there's more, but there's three main ones. I'm thinking that we can be transformed. And it's our bodies, our hearts, and our minds. And so, I was going to say something real quick. Yeah, go ahead. And you may have already dug into this. You said it kind of goes with what you were saying. It's a continuation almost of what you preached about last time. You preached about the mind, would you say? You just said the consciousness. Right. So, just according to, you know, different philosophers and studies and stuff, no one can really figure out exactly what the mind is or so they say. Right. But they come to the same general conclusion that it is the seat of your consciousness. Right. So, well, quickly here, for people who obviously weren't here, I went into about where is your mind, and how Corinthians talks about, we can't be sitting at the table of God and demons. Right. And then all these other verses say that, you know, Christ is seated in heavenly places and we are seated with Christ in heavenly places. Keep your mind on things that are above all those things. So, it's like, are we sitting in heaven with Him or at the table of demons? So. Well, and this, what this verse is about the renewal of your mind, that is how you're transformed. So, where you're seeding your mind is going to kind of determine what transformation, I guess, is taking place, or if you were even transformed, if you just stay, okay, fine, you're still your kind of earthly self, or if you're putting your mind on heavenly things in heavenly places, which means you're probably in the Word and prayer, that's how you become transformed. Right. I just didn't know. I'm sure you've already, I'm just like, oh, that kind of does go along with what you were saying about the seat of consciousness, because that's how we're transformed, is by putting our mind on the things of God. Well, obviously it starts in the heart, but the mind just kind of carries this. Or does it though? Yeah. Well, things, see, and maybe this is a thing of debate, I guess, maybe. I'm always kind of under the impression that things actually start in the mind, and then make their way to the heart. Your mind is a place of filtering. Yeah. It's like, okay, things come in here. The mind can be a firewall, basically, that comes in and it's like, okay, we're going to let this go down into the heart, or are we going to get rid of it? I think I mean more it. Not start there, but it matters. It's what matters, the true change, basically. That's kind of what I meant. But I know what you're saying, because you're exactly right. Because it's, well, it's like, people are like, I don't let things affect me. You know, the people that are really hardened, well, they didn't necessarily, I don't think hard in their heart. They've hardened everything around it to protect it, right? And I think that's when we talk about tearing down walls for people, and eventually you get to, because everyone's got the same center. It's just center, not center, I guess, you know. But we build everything up around it, and then it takes sometimes a lot of work to chip away before we can get to the real Charlie, or the real Aaron, or the real, you know, person. So I mean, I think you're right. I mean, I think it 100% is a firewall. You got to have the, I guess, the right kind of love virus to break it and get in. Love virus. It's funny you mentioned about the wall and stuff. Because I think you were in the back when I was sharing this Sunday with, I think it was when I preached last maybe about a dream I had. I don't remember seeing you sitting out there. But anyway, in one part of this dream, there was a white horse, and it was trying to like headbutt me, but in the chest, it's trying to headbutt me. And I wasn't running, but I was like, you know, like kind of put my arms up like, what do you do? It was like, you know, crazy horse, right? And but then it disappears. I don't know where it goes. But then, you know, that fence we have around our porch, the horse had completely destroyed it. Even though I didn't see him do it, like just, you know, in dreams, sometimes you just know things. You know things, yeah. The horse had done it. And of course, if you have many dreams, especially spiritual ones, you'd start to pick up on patterns and different things. I mean, people have written books about it and stuff like that. But houses a lot of times represent your heart. And they destroyed the fence around the door to the house, which would be like the door to my heart. So not that I don't already have the spirit and have, you know, God in my heart and all this, but it was very clear that like he was wanting to go another level with me, you know, he's like, there are areas you're not letting me in that I don't even sometimes realize myself, you know, areas where I need to let him come in and transform me that I'm like, if I don't actually sit down and pray or if my wife doesn't tell me, and I will not be aware of myself because I'm like, we get content with who we are and where we are until something happens and we're like, oh, I need to change. Well, it's like being nose blind to a smell. I think you just get kind of used to something in a certain way, like you said, content. And it takes either stepping away and then coming back or someone completely different being like, whoa, what is, you know, what's the smell? Charlie, you stepped in something, you know, you've been carrying this around. You smell that smell. Oh, that smell. Yeah, you're right, whoever wrote that. I don't know. Monkeys, I think, are the Beatles maybe. I don't know. That's funny. I'm not into Eurotrash music. Sorry, I shouldn't make fun of them. So starting with the body, you know, the Bible doesn't say, I don't think too much, but enough about bodily transformation, maybe not so much transformation, but how to take care of it, right? There's a few. Paul talks about it, I think a little bit. It's the only thing that comes to my mind, like, just off. Offhand, so. Right, so, but putting it practically, you know, because sometimes we read scripture and we're like, how do we apply this, right? That's always the hardest part. Well, I mean, we're kind of talking about an earlier diet, you know, talking about transforming our bodies. Well, if we realize our bodies are not our own, that we were bought and paid for with a price. Paul makes that very clear to us that we are temples of the Holy Spirit. You know, we're not trying to be mega churches. We're not the walls. I heard somebody say some people are mega churches with our bodies. Well, this is a, I say, a sensitive subject, but it's one for a lot of people. Well, when I've talked about it to you, I think, before you'll have and again, this is, and this is something that God has changed my heart a lot on, like empathy and just caring for people and loving them. And one of my favorite things to do, and obviously you look at me, I don't live by a lot of this own advice, but I've strived towards that goal. I had a couple months where I couldn't really work out too hard, and I'm back in the gym. I'm going back and everything and I brought Callie with me today. That was kind of fun. Sneak your hand, but you know, the biggest problem is with that kind of stuff is I think you are putting undue stress on your temple. And if you are, you know, five foot eight, 300 pounds and you start complaining about severe back pain or knee pain or hips or you can't breathe or things like that. It's not the devil, it's not the devil, it's your mouth and it's what you're shoving into it and you're not exercising. And, you know, people will pray like, I believe God's going to heal me. And it's like a hundred percent God can heal you, right? You keep eating junk food and you keep not exercising. I think what more than likely what God will do is he will give you a supernatural quickening, a supernatural energy to get you started on the journey to better help. You know, it's a very, it's irritating to have people come in and they pray. I say irritate, it's not the right word. I just can't think of a better word for lack of a better word. Because I see that they come pray for these, they ask for these prayers on these things and they, this is a continuous issue and I need help. But they're blind to their own involvement of their issue. And it's a hard thing to tell, you know, and I may have, and I may have prayed about that before, like on Wednesday where I was, I said, you know, help us to take care of our own bodies, you know, help us, like, just to make sure that we're not the cause. Because when I was, you know, trying to get, I drank that drink way too fast and it's just trying to come out, when, when I was trying to get really, really big and strong, you know, I was 260 pounds, which for my frame is a, is pretty large, 260 is big for anybody. But I'm six foot one, 260 is pretty heavy duty. And I couldn't breathe at night. I was snoring. I started having sleep at Mallory's. I would just stop breathing. And when I woke, when I woke myself up, I was like panicking. Because I was in the final, I was like, you know, I couldn't breathe. And I couldn't figure out what was going on. And then Mallory was on my case, like, you need to stop, you're going to die. You know, I was like, you're going to just, just what so you can be bigger and stronger, you know, and so, and this is a perfect example of I was doing it too much. I was, I, even though I was in the gym, I wasn't taking care of my temple. I was abusing it at that point. So it's like, you can go one way or the other. So nobody's perfect. So that's why I learned to not throw the stones because even though I'm in the gym all the time, I was not in any better health. So like, I think what you guys are doing, Jillian Michaels thing, feels like a calisthenics style plyometrics. Crazy good. It's the best, you'll be in the best shape of your life. We've really just started getting back into it because we have the the thing tomorrow night, the tent revival. Tonight actually would have been a workout night, but it still might when I get home. It may not be too late. Depends if Jason's up to it. We all three do it together. It's funny because our floors are slick a little bit. So after we start sweating and you're trying to do pushups, you're just like sliding like, oh my gosh. I love that kind of adversity, man. I'm telling you, it is a bellies like, can I come work out with you on clay? I'm like, no, I want my gym scene to be harsh. The harsher the better. I want to have to fight a lion in the gym because it's like a it's a mental thing. It really is like, it's like, I want the knurling to cut my hand. You know, it's like, it's like a toughness. I want to become the weights. I want to be hard like the weights. I mean, I think it's kind of a big headed way of doing things. But it's just fun to do. It's something that I'm passionate about. And I love when people ask me like, hey, what can I do differently? And like, hey, man, it's super simple. I see you drink five sodas a day. Stop doing that, drink the water instead. You know, I'm not saying drink a gallon of water a day. And if you don't want to stop drinking five sodas. Yeah, it's like drop down to two. Drop down to two and just fill water. I switch to switch to sweet tea or maybe half sweet tea or, you know, I like energy drinks. And the ones I like to have like the stevia or the other types of natural sweeteners in them. I like those because the natural, the aspartame gives me migraines. I don't really like messing with that stuff. Like so I stay away from diet. So it is now, right? Except for fresca. Oh, yeah. Fresca is the bomb. I'll take a hit. We might as well be giving fresca free advertising. Yeah, fresca. Listen to the podcast. What is the podcast? We are a fresca drinking church around here. But anyway, I don't want to drone on about this. But bodily transformation, I think personally. Because it is a, and it's all about time. I think it's maybe one of the hardest transformations to make. Because how socially acceptable it is to. You can't really hide it, right? You can wear bigger and better baggy clothes and things like that. But now it's socially acceptable. He's like, oh, God made me this way. No, he didn't. Because our culture doesn't want to do what they call fat shaming. Or even on the other side of it, whatever you would call that. But it's like skinny shaming. Yeah, just fat shaming is usually the thing you hear about. Which don't get me wrong. We're not going to go out there and start judging people based off of how big they are. No, I'm not going to say something to anybody. I might just talk to them. They're like, I'm having a lot of knee trouble. And I'm never going to be like, have you tried losing weight? Right. It's just, how do you approach that? And that's why it's such a difficult thing to talk about. Because I want to say, look, I understand. I mean, I don't look like a fat guy. But I am a big guy. And my knees hurt if I'm heavy. And my back starts to hurt if I'm heavy. And I'm breathing hard right now just in normal company. Because I took that drink and I exploded. And by the way, drink is a body armor. Pineapple coconut body armor, but also a sponsor. And no, but what I mean, it's hard because like anything, it's a daily thing. But it's a lot easier to stay in and read the word and pray than it is to get up and go and make your body move around. And it's more acceptable. Oh, he's just fat and happy, you know? And, you know, I don't know. I know a lot more fat pastors than I know fit pastors. Because that makes any sense. Yeah. And that's not a judgment. I'm not perfect healthy. No, I'm just saying like, well, it is one of the, well, they always say there's like a few things that churches never like to talk about. I heard Ronnie Webb say this one time. And what he said was, nobody ever likes to talk about sex and money in church. Yeah. He says, but you like both. But food. That's fair. Gluttony, you know, eating too much. I mean, we'll talk all day about drugs. Yeah. Alcohol. Pornography. Pornography. Yeah, all the titles. Yeah, the big ones. But food, which would be a form of an idol. Yeah. If you let it be, we don't talk about it. And that's why, I mean, don't get me wrong. Sometimes people have things like thyroid issues. Other things like that, that have been out of their control. Yeah. And this isn't about fat shaming anybody. No, no, no. This is all about, you know, how we can transform. We're just starting with the body. And we're going to go on other things. We can almost three part this. Because I think this is a big, I mean, you've touched, you always seem to do this. This is like, you're like the think tank of this operation. This is a huge conversation. Got a big mind. He, we're fat shaming Charlie's big old head. Jason says they have a big head. Yeah. I mean, it's, don't, don't even go there. Oh, I stepped on the cord. That's okay. That's my fault. Oh, difficulties. There we go. My fatly, unplugged the mic. That's okay. I was just calling Charlie a big head. We prefer the term big backs. Our vision. Well, our heads are probably the same size. I'm just saying. That's funny. Because I'm 5'8" and you're 6'1". Yeah. Oh, that's bad for me then. And I'm probably at least 50 pounds heavier than you. Yeah. Yeah, right about there, I think. But, well, no, so back to bodily transformation. And maybe we do stay this for the whole night. It doesn't matter to me. So one of the things that really kind of started opening my eyes. Well, you know, Jessica's whole ordeal that she was going through for like a year. You know, she's starting to have like panic attacks and stuff. And then like her blood pressure was always high. Yeah. And which, come to find out, I'm not going to go into all the details. But a lot of it actually wasn't related to what she was eating. But changing the way she ate to lower it until it could figure out what was going on. Was having an effect on it and bringing it down. Which is good. Because there were times when like a panic attack would come on. It would shoot it up to 180 over 90, you know, or something crazy like that. Just crazy high. Now she's in a much better place. You know, had the gallbladder surgery, which apparently affected it in some way. And now, you know, if it is a little high, it is due to either just higher amounts of stress or bad eating habits. And I think you guys are now you're talking about exercising more. I think now that you're getting into exercise, like a healthy lifestyle. God has designed us beautifully, wonderfully, perfectly, right? And you, there's no shortages. There's no shortage of stories out there of people who were very unhealthy. They had diabetes. They had XYZ syndromes or diseases. And they said, you know what? I'm going to stop eating, stop eating out all the time, stop drinking sodas. I'm going to exercise, drink water, eat more fruits and veggies. I'm going to live a healthier lifestyle overall. Yep. All of a sudden, they don't have diabetes. Yeah. Their blood pressure is completely under control. They're no longer completely reversed. Heart disease is no longer a thing. And it's like, well, how? I've even heard of some cases of cancer. Yes. No, I have to. There's a guy we work with who are used to work with who went, he went for him, his route, because the way his body reacted to it was to go, he went vegetarian. And which I'm not saying to be a vegetarian, I'm just saying for him, his healthy life fell, he chose with that, and he's perfectly fine now. He's probably the healthiest guy I know. But it starts to, he designed us, and I think what's happening is, you are coming into alignment with the way he wants you. Like, that's like a big word, right? Coming into alignment with the word of God. Yeah. I think his will for you is to be healthy and to be happy. It's a lot easier to go out and preach in the streets when you're not out of breath and winded by the time you walk out to the street, right? So he wants you to be happy and healthy. If I stand up there and start hooping, hollering, and preaching, and I have an aneurysm, right? And I pass out to kill over because I can't get excited without dying, right? It doesn't help. But I think when people start to eat healthy and they start to live better and they start to exercise, that doesn't mean you get a six pack. That doesn't mean you're ripped and jacked. A news flash, if you don't already know, all those people that look like that in magazines and on YouTube and Instagram and all those other sites, they're all using something. Every one of them, just about. There's probably very few. There's definitely a lot more that are using some sort of performance enhancing drug, even if it's prescribed to them, than is not using it, right? Hands down, 100%. And most people aren't even hiding it anymore. So it used to be kind of a thing, but now people are like, I'm just going to be honest about it because it still takes hard work and dedication, but you're up, you're cheating a little bit, right? But you may not look like the magazine cover, but you're going to be healthy and you're going to be around for your kids and grandkids. So just getting healthier is like the built-in cheat code, exercise, diet, good rest, nutrition, exercise, and sleep. That's the cheat code to getting healthy and curing a lot of these problems that God's built it in into us. Well, I'll tell you what, talking about rest, and I want to come back to some of the changes we made after Jessica was going through that stuff, but since we cut hours at work, and I say hours, we're one hour shorter a day now. So I work a 10-hour day job, well, technically 10 and a half for me, but we took an hour off, and so now it's a nine-hour day until after Christmas, then we'll pick back up. Just adding that one, I'm still going to bed at the same time. I thought I was like, well, I got another hour now. I might, you know, stay up a little bit, you know, with Jess or with the kids, you know, whatever, but we're actually, everyone else is still on the same bedtime, and I don't feel the need to stay up later, so I'm going to bed at the same time as I already do. And that one extra hour, like, I have felt so rested since we've gone to nine hours, and I haven't a long time, and I really feel like it's made a lot of difference in me, because I was averaging, like, close to five hours of sleep. Right. It's not enough. It really isn't. Especially if I wanted to work out. Especially if you're scheduled, because for those of you who don't know, he gets up, drives what? 35, 40 minutes, almost? 30 minutes. Two work works for 10 and a half hours, then drives home. Plus there's the half-hour lunch. I'm at work for 11 hours. So, I mean, it's a very long day, and he has to be there at what time? Well, it was, well, when we're on 10, I have to clock in at 4.45 in the morning. Okay, so to put that in perspective, he's getting up at 3.30 in the morning, roughly, probably, right? Yeah, that's what it was. So, yeah, that's that one extra hour is going to make a huge difference. Yeah, and the reason I was averaging only that much, it could have been six, but a lot of times, you know, it stay up later a little bit sometimes. I mean, some days, me and Jessica just don't get to talk at all before we go to bed. It's like, what are you going to do? You're just going to go to sleep or do you want to connect with your wife? You know, it's like, well, then the year, like, I'm going to stay up and connect with my wife. And then you get four hours of sleep or three and a half hours of sleep. And now you're driving to work tired, you're slumpy at work all day, you're chugging energy drinks, then you're jittery, then you crash, then you drive home, and then you pass out. And then you're not talking to nobody. I think people, I don't really think this, but I like to say this. I think people who drink a lot of coffee or energy drinks and stuff in the mornings to wake up, I'm like, you guys are weak. Yeah, because I don't drink any of that stuff. I just go to work. I might drink water sometimes with when I get up. I'm just like, I'm just going, if I, if I do, if I do caffeine right when I wake up, it almost ruins my day. If I wait a solid like hour and a half until I'm fully awake, I'll then drink one. But at this point, and I would like to point this out as well, this is a guilt. This is something that I need to deal with. And I could, I should just quit. I actually like flavor. So my favorite drink is sour gummy worm, rain energy drink. It's my favorite flavor drink that there is in the market. It's delicious. I love it. Sour gummy worm, rain energy drink. Does it taste like gummy worms? Kind of, but I love it. I mean, it's, there's not a drink that I like to flavor more of than this. The problem is, it's got 200 milligrams of caffeine. Perspective, that's like four cups of coffee, which isn't that big of a deal if you drink it over a long period of time. But if I chug it, yeah, in one pan, yeah. So what I do is, I generally have been waiting about an hour and a half, or so after I get up, I'm at work, I get everything set up, and then I'm kind of like, you know, and then I don't want to get a headache. That's kind of what I was getting at from the caffeine. And so I will, I'll kind of sip on that more or less for several hours. So I'm not getting jittery and getting smashed by 200 milligrams of caffeine around one time, which is kind of rookie numbers, you know, like, because there's drinks out there with, you know, over 300 milligrams of caffeine. Holy cow. Yeah. So be, be safe. If you're going to drink that stuff, right, it's, oh, yeah, red bull's supposed to be like kind of dangerous actually. Yeah, but it's only got like, I think like 75 or 80 milligrams of caffeine. It's not much more than a standard cup of coffee. Really? Yeah. It must be something else than a red bull. I can't remember what it is. Probably the nasty peach apricot or whatever they got. The nastiest flavor drink I bought one the other day. Guess someone told me they were delicious. And I don't know why I thought I would enjoy it because I don't like peaches or apricots, but somehow I thought a peach apricot red bull would be a good choice. It was not. So yeah, whatever, coconut, pineapple. I like them all. So, but well, transformation. Yes. So one of the things which, and I know we haven't really brought much scripture outside of Romans 12 too, but one of the things that I've tried to start doing more of and so is Jessica is obviously changing our diet, right? How would eat? Now, I'm not seeing like tons of weight loss or anything, which I mean, I'm a little overweight, you know, and it's all in my belly. It really is like my arms and my legs and everything else are still looking good, but my gut. I always tell Jay, so I'm like, I got a good, you know, it's a little pudgy, you know, but eating cleaner doesn't necessarily mean getting fitter unless you are like really bad off being though, you know, but what it eating cleaner does do for you though, if you're someone that's not already like really overweight, like three times in a row, I went to the ENT or went to the doctor, you know, when I was doing all my ear stuff, every time my blood pressure was 140 over, I don't know, like 79 or something like that. It was like a little high. And the first time they took that, I was like, okay, like, and they asked me this, so you ever, have you ever had high blood pressure? I said, no. I said, sometimes I get nervous when I come to the doctor, you know, it's just, I've always been like that, because I'm always afraid of getting stuck with a needle. So I'm like, okay, if I have to get any blood drawn today, I'm going to lose it. But so that happened the first time, and then it happened two or three more times after that. It was, they were all almost exactly the same. It was running high. And so it was kind of a little bit of a wake up call. I'm like, okay, like, I see what Jessica's going through, even though it's not entirely related to how she's eating, but I knew she was eating better than I was. Right. And so I had to make change. And so one of the best changes I've made was my breakfast. I didn't really even eat breakfast that much to begin with, but if I did, it was usually my lunch I was bringing, which for a good long while, like, I didn't just kind of got lazy about lunch prep and for work. And I literally just take chicken nuggets or pizza rolls, you know, stuff like that. You can, that's all, you, that's a big red flag, you know, nationally good stuff. Yeah. And then you drink a body armor or a gatorade on top of that when you don't need all that extra sugar or electrolytes, because you're not working out or not. There is a lot of sugar in here. Yeah. It is coconut water though, which is nice. That's better for you. But what says 10% coconut water? Well, you know, that's 10% better. 10% more than it was. Right. Tap water. But the best thing I have done for breakfast, which I actually like, is oats. Specifically, I was doing, you know, the hot oats, you know, and then adding milk into it, give it, just make it a little better. But overnight oats, the cold oats. Yeah. And so whenever, I don't do it every, like, I'll try to do it then obviously the night before because it's got to sit. So I don't do it every day before work. But a lot of times I'll try to do just a half cup of the rolled oats. And then Jessica will use almond milk, but I'll just use regular milk and I'll equal parts oats and milk. So a half a cup of milk. And then I'll put like a serving, which is like three quarters of a cup, I think of non-fat Greek yogurt. And then I'll drizzle some honey in there and I'll put cocoa powder in there too. So it gives it a chocolatey flavor. And there's only like 20 grams of sugar in all of that before you add in berries. Right. That's insane. Yeah. And there's pretty much no fat or a little bit, you know, the yogurt's gonna have a little bit. Right. But it's a good fat. You've got the carbs, you've got protein, you've got some fat. It's a pretty good thing. It's a high protein milk. Like the yogurt itself has almost 20 grams of protein for a serving. Then you add in the oats. I mean, it's like the milk. Yeah, it's like almost 30 grams of protein. And then, you know, I throw in some strawberries and blueberries. Sometimes I'll do bananas. And then I always try to put in almonds as well. And so, or not almonds, I'm sorry, pecans. Pecans are superior to almonds. I can't believe I made that mistake. He's like, oh, I like almonds. Almonds are, they're not nasty. I don't like them as much. But when I actually was looking at the nutrition facts and like measuring out how much I was putting in so I know exactly what was going in my body and just looking up the benefits of berries and pecans and oats and everything, I'm like, man, this is actually a really healthy breakfast. And it's not super high in calories. It's like a power breakfast. Yeah. And it's so filling. And it keeps me full, which is a big thing, because I even when I eat good, I tend to overeat. Yeah. And that's what makes you fat is the calories of the surplus that your body doesn't need. Yeah, that I'm not using because I wasn't working out. I was explaining that to Callie this morning, I was in building a house. I said, Callie, may if I tore down our house, putting our house as a muscle, if I tore down our house, and I said, I'm going to rebuild that house, but I had less materials than what I had to build the house back brick by brick. I said, would the house be the same size? I said, no. I said, well, if I had more materials, what would the house do? So it would be bigger. He would add more to it. Exactly. So if you want to add more like muscles, you have to have more calories, more protein. If you want to lose weight, basically, you want to have less than you're actually, when you tear down the muscle in the body. Right. But you were talking about a viable verse. And this you kind of mentioned earlier, but we'll go ahead and read is that first Corinthians six. Yeah. It says, you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God. You are not your own. You were bought at a price, therefore, honor God with your bodies. Yeah. So, and I think also, you could say easily, talking about the fruits of the Spirit, one of them being self control. And overeating and obesity and bad health is a sign of a lack of self control. And there's almost, there's very rarely an actual excuse for being very heavy. Right. Because you think about people who talk about making time. I don't have time to exercise. Okay. What time do you go to bed? 11 o'clock. What time do you get up? Four o'clock. Okay. Get up at three 30, 30 minutes exercise and try to go to bed 30 minutes earlier that night. You know what I'm saying? Like, there's always time on your lunch break. Do 100, 100 squats and, you know, 50 pushups. There actually is a guy I work with. I don't think he does as much anymore, but he would do like, I don't know, like 40 pushups every break. Yeah, something like that. So it's just there's there's there's ways that at your work, for instance, the amount of walking you do. And it's miles a day. Yeah. If you if you right now, you have to maintain that with a certain level of eating. You cut out 250 to 500 calories a day of your normal eating. You will start to lose weight. You know, don't cut out the good stuff like the proteins and things like that. So you start to lose some muscle and things. But it's my fault. I'm getting far away from the mind. You're good. But and again, I would also like to say I am not a nutritionist, nor am I a health professional. And neither am I. This is all what would be called bro science. But it's more just things we like actually experience. Yeah, this is just our self experience is our own experience. And I am a firm believer in to be a whole Christian to be you have to body as as important as the rest of them are to me. They are. Because like you said, your mind, it goes to the heart in your mind. If your body is trash, your mind will be trash. Yeah. And your heart will be trash. They are connected. That's why if you're like, Oh, you know, when you're out of shape and you don't want to get up, you don't want to, I'm just depressed all the time. And you start working out people like, Hey, I mean, I'm in a good mood today. You know, I feel good. I can tell you in a on days you can tell just by talking to me, whether I'm not I've worked out that day or not, I'm because I'm a jerk, right? Energy levels are different. My whole kind of, you know, the kids say, my aura is different that day, right? I'm just not the same person. The vibe is different, right? They vibe check me. I fail every time. If I'm not working out that morning. So I, you're, it is a direct connection to your mind, which is a direct connection to your heart. You have to take care of all three. You have to start today. Don't wait till the first of the year when everybody's in the gym. Yeah. Don't wait till the first of the year to roll out of your bed and try doing that much longer to start. And if you, and I don't know who's going to actually listen to this, and I again, I'm not a doctor. I'm not a science expert when it comes to a fitness expert or whatever. If you, but if you want some basic advice that has worked for me that might work for you or for Charlie, you know, we give the email at the end. Email us a question. If you're listening to this, ask us, hey, what's a, if I can't do a pushup, what do I do? I can send you a video of a variation of a pushup that you can do, right, a multiple of them to help you get to that point. Or if you want to do situps or you just want to walk, get up and walk 30 minutes a day before you eat when you're fasted, fasted cardio. It doesn't have to be hit, right. Jessica made that joke about low intensity interval training. Yeah, she's called it lit. It can just be walking because you know what, if you're out of shape, your body is going to react favorably to it. And you're going to start to see those changes sooner than somebody who's a great shape trying to eat away a couple extra pounds or of muscle or fat loss. You're, that's why someone like this, like my big, you know, my 600 pound life or whatever, like, or the biggest loser, those people are 500 pounds. Well, they'll lose 30 pounds in two weeks. It's because they've got so much to lose their bodies. Like we have to get this out of here and they're doing moderate levels of exercise that most people could do without breaking a sweat. Right. Well, used to maybe most people could, but, and it's, but their body's just working so hard to move their bodies around that it's just dumping those guys like we've got to get lighter. We cannot survive the, you know, 600 pounds doing jumping jacks. Right. So your body wants to be in this, when I'll say it again, in alignment with the way gods made you because he did make us all different. And there is a perfect body for Charlie Patterson, just like there's a perfect body for Aaron Goens. Now we won't have our true perfect bodies until we're up there with him. Right. But there's a, there's a, there's an optimized version of us. That's the exact word I was just thinking. There's, yeah, there's an optimal version of us. There's an optimized version of us that God's got for us. And you just have to seek him first. Get out there and do it. Don't be afraid to start. Who cares that anybody thinks or says, exercise, eat healthy, get plenty of sleep. Well, it's like I mentioned earlier, we were bought and paid for these bodies aren't even our own. No. We will be judged along, you know, it will be judged by all of our works. Right. Whether that's for the kingdom of God, you know, souls that we're leading to Jesus. We're also going to be judged for the words we speak, whether they're idle or they're productive or destructive. We're going to be judged for how we took care of our bodies. I guarantee it. It's going to be a complete and total judgment. And, excuse me, well, he's a perfect God. Well, yeah, he's not going to leave any, and he's a perfect just God, which means no stone will be. And he will show mercy if we repent in turn, right? If we have destroyed our bodies for the first 30 years of our lives. But then here comes year 31. Yeah. We're like, okay, I don't want to do this anymore. I want to take care of myself. Yeah. Along with accepting Christ, if you haven't done that already, truly repent from your sins and from trashing your body, and you make a total turnaround, he's going to be like, you know what, I'm proud of you. Yeah. You know, it's what you did back then. It's covered. Yeah. I don't even remember what you did. Well, there's a lot of churches that you were doing like fitness, like classes, like classes, like boot camps or whatever. I knew one in Arkansas. I don't remember what they did, but it was like intense, you know, working out. Well, it's, I think it's a good thing. You know, that's one thing my grandpa, he talked about, my father-in-law said it and my grandpa, I've talked to him about it, you know, at a certain age, you just kind of, but you know, he gets up and walks around and everybody worries about him. When I told him, I said, you know, it's not as easy to do, but there's nothing that says that, you know, I think 84 years old or 83 years old, that you can't still get stronger. Right. Do you understand what I'm saying? Yeah. And I always tell him like, don't quit, you know, getting up, moving around and eating food. My father-in-law said, I'm thinking about getting some weights and start working on just to keep my muscles strong. I'm like, do it. There's, you know, I understand that there's the physical over time our bodies just from life start to break down as our wisdom kind of gets higher, our strength generally gets lower. But don't, it's never, just like it's never too late to give your heart to God. It is never too late to try to better yourself your health. It's never too late. I would say I would not be, the most important thing is giving your heart to God. The body and everything else is what comes along with it. The mind, the body, everything, you have to be right with God, and in the sight of God, you have to be right with Him. Because then you'll want to take care of yourself as a result. Yeah. And it won't be in a self, like a conceited, you know, like vanity style of exercise, you know, like, and I don't want to talk bad about people who do this, but you know, like bodybuilders, you know, like going pro, they call it get their pro card and stuff, you know, they're, they're just down in their speedos and show it up. Yeah, there's generally there's some of them, I might be nice, but I mean, that whole sport is about appearance and vanity. Right. Yeah. The whole thing, you're literally being judged by others. That's the, you're going up there to be judged on how you appear. You're perfect, how perfect your body is according to what others think, what people, what the standard that people have put on you. Right. All right. That's always like, I enjoy seeing the shows about like Vikings and things like that. You know, like, they're like, you know, six foot four, 240 pounds, just jack like line, not line, but like line backers or something like, I'm like, you do know those guys just rode everywhere. So their cardio is probably through the roof and they just raid and eat whenever they want that they may not eat for two weeks, you know, or something like that. These guys aren't, you know, two are, I highly doubt they were six foot four, like 200, they were probably five foot, 540 pounds or something like that. You know, I was like, I highly doubt they were the size that everyone says they are. We're a very big people now. We, there's that guy that talks about the joke and about George Washington, you know, he was six foot two, you know, 250 years ago. Mm hmm. He was huge. All right. Right. And average height was like five four or something like that. Five five. He was a monster. So, but I don't know how I got onto that kind of crazy subject, but I don't know. I just, I just, it's so important. And I know we've kind of gone on and gone on about this. And, but I liked it. And we can talk about the, the mental transformation next. Oh yeah. We'll make this a two or three part or three part or just like this is a, this is a, the, a total transformation. A total, total spirit, spirit makeover. My totally patters in there. Yeah. It's, I don't know. You can tell I'm kind of passionate about it. So I get something that I just, I love when people are like, you got lost 10 pounds or exercise this morning. But the church really needs it. Yeah. That's how I got on talking. Yeah. Well, America, we're like one of the fattest countries in the world. It's not the fattest. Our military is fatter than it's ever been. Wow. I didn't know that. That's crazy. Well, there's, yeah, you can't keep anybody that's in shape and they've lowered the standard so much. Wow. Yeah. So yeah, I mean, more and so than the rest of the world, we need to take care of our bodies because, you know, what if, what if God calls you to a ministry like you were talking about where you're maybe you're in the streets a lot, or maybe you're traveling a lot like Isabel's doing, going all over the world. Literally, you go into Africa, you're going to have a surplus to live off of. Right. Well, yeah. Well, you think about that, then you, you go into places unprepared because obviously you're not fasting if you're that much overweight. Yeah. Right. Because a lifestyle of fasting, which I'm not knocking on anybody, that's something I need to, you know, really work on a lifestyle of fasting with prayer, of course. We're not fasting just to fast unless the Lord leads you to do that. That's whatever. But you go to other places unprepared. We may not have, you know, three meals a day or whatever. Right. Maybe sometimes not even have a meal for exactly. You know, your airfare, if you're too big, you pay for two plane tickets because you're taking up two seats, you know, and just different things like that, where you can't even walk that far without having a heart attack. Are you physically ready to accept the calling that God has on your life? Because there is a physical toll on it along with the spiritual and a mental and emotional toll. How do you feel talking about that? Have you ever noticed like after, like after I preach, do you know what I do? I'm exhausted. I go home and I sleep. I take a nap. I'm honestly, it is. It depends. I don't know because I already feel that way on Sundays anyway. After church, I'm always like, before we even eat, because you know, a lot of times it hits people after they eat, you know, all the cards and stuff. But when we were going to Mimi's all the time on Sundays, before the food was even done, like I would, yeah, I guess I would always get that chair and just start to go to sleep because I'm tired. No, I just get it tired, especially if like the spiritually moving and which I always try to operate there. But I mean, it's like when he really moves out to him, I'm like, I'm tired as I need to go home and rest. It's like, it's exhausted. And well, I mean, we're operating in a place where we're allowed to, but without him, we're not capable of, right? Yeah. Yeah. In shape. So to kind of sum up bodily transformation here, or to give some good, like, agreed upon advice at the end here. Well, number one, when I was talking about the changes we made and with the breakfast and the oats and berries and everything, my blood pressure went from that 140 over 80 to 117 over like 72 within three days. Three days it dropped down because I changed my breakfast. Yeah. Which I changed, you know, more than just breakfast, but that was the biggest thing. Yeah. All it took. And it's so important to start when you're younger, because then you don't have to make up for lost time, which is really, really hard, but just some solid pieces of advice. Again, we're not nutritionists or anything. Everyone in the world can agree upon this. If you don't already have them in your diet, get your fruits and veggies in like that. You just can't ignore any of the science behind it. It is the first form of nutrition God made for us before he allowed Adam and Eve to eat the animals, which only came as a result of, well, I shouldn't say it's a result of that, but it didn't come until after he made the first sacrifice. Then he gave the animals over to them for food. But there, I mean, there's a reason. There's a reason why fruits and veggies are so good for you. You know, we could go all into that, but that was the first form of nutrition. Now, eating animals and stuff, obviously, you know, the right animals, you know, beef, deer, deer is so good. A pitch. Fish is so good for you. Like salmon and different things. Croppy fish is good. It tastes good. Yeah. You're not frying it, but... Oh, yeah. How you cook things? I don't know if I ever had baked croppy fish. I don't know how I feel about that. That's Southeast Missouri in me disagrees a little bit with my thinking on that. Right. But it's just so important to get those fruits and veggies in whole grains. You know, a lot of people don't like wheat bread or whole grain. They like white bread. But it really is just that much better for you. I started eating, it's called gut bread, where a grain's almighty, I think, is the brand. And it's got like sunflower seeds in it and all other sorts of seeds and grains in it. There's a little texture to it too, kind of crunchy, but in a good way, you know? It's good. And all the regular sandwiches like that are just toast. One big thing is start making your own food. Yeah. Like if you... So you're getting processed food. Like I can't buy a bunch of stuff right now. Go look in your cupboards. You've probably got some beans, you've probably got some rice, you've probably got slice of ham or something. There's something you can do if you stop eating out as much. First of all, you're going to save a bunch of money. Yep. And people are like, "Who is more expensive to buy?" No, it's not. It used to be, but not anymore. Now it's just as expensive to eat out, if not more, especially if you have a family that is to buy food. And if we're just eating less also, because we have big portions. Yes. I don't know if you knew her or ever seen her, London used to have a friend named Danny. She was from Spain. She was an exchange student at Nieleville. And Danny would stay at the house with us sometimes. And she told London that we eat big plates in America. Like she wasn't like just talking about our house, but like when they would go to ball games and just everywhere else, go out to eat. Serving size. She's like, "Yeah, we kind of eat a lot in Spain, you know, but like our plates are small." Yeah. When they have all together and they scoop it out what they want, you know? Yeah. We just eat large plates compared to a lot of people, which is why we're big. That's why we're unhealthy along with all the crud that's put into our food. You're strong like bull, like overweight, the bull, but yeah, get your fruits and veggies, get your whole grain, drink lots of water, drink lots of water, get sleep, sleep, quit staying up late. But if there are any, if there's anyone, I would say, under the age of 30, okay, which that includes me currently, anyone under the age of 30 that might be tempted to stay up late for now, tempted to stay up late, especially teenagers, you know, talking to people you don't need to talk to. Yeah. Yeah. Even if, you know, Hank, I'm down. Nothing good happens after dark. Yep, exactly. That's why I'm going to say nothing good. It robs you of your sleep, which God has given to us to rest our bodies. That's why we repair ourselves. Our body repairs itself while we're sleeping. That's what I was telling Callie today. I said eating, sleeping, and exercise, they are all equally important. Yep. There is not, honestly, I'd actually say eating and sleeping are more important than the exercise because the amount of time you're doing those things is much more than the time you're dedicating specific time to exercising. So you're saying it's triune, that would say yes. I really think it is. I mean, I agree. Yeah, I agree. This whole thing, and this is like Ronnie Webb made the joke about, you know, sex and money, I think. Yeah. Nobody likes to talk about them, but you like both of them? Yeah. This is nobody likes to talk about being physically healthy because you don't want to fat shame people. And that's not what this is about. It's not fat shaming. It's like, if I am, if I am called to be a pastor, and so we're we're shepherds in our own way, and we are, you can't have fat sheep. No, we are not allowing, we are not helping our sheep. If we allow them to do bad things, and I'm not saying you have to blast them about it, no, but you just say, hey, you know, you've been complaining about all these things. You know what helped me do that? I lost 20 pounds and get my back, my feet stopped hurting. My back stopped hurting. I started sleeping better. And maybe they'll say, oh, well, you're saying I'm fat? Or most of the time, because I've said that before to somebody, they say, man, I've been trying. And I'm like, hey, you know what? I've noticed you tell them like compliment, I'm like, yeah, I can tell you've been trying. That's why I kind of mentioned it. I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to be weird. And I've almost had that conversation. But there's ways to go about it because you're doing it with love. And if you and if they know you like that, which they should, if you're their pastor, if you're their best friend, if you're their accountability partner, if you ever you're talking to, if you love them, you got to help them. Because in five years, they're still trying to work out their calling and everything. And they have a heart attack and die. I don't and I don't want to and that kind of gets into the realm of like, what is but was it before their time? Or what is the whole deal on that, right? But you know, it's almost like a long term suicide. If you ask me, if I walk out and step in like you're poisoning yourself, yes, if I walk out and step in front of a bus, well, what was my calling, right? What's the there's no benefit from that? That was a mistake. But if I sit there and eat McDonald's every day for years, and I don't exercise, and I just, and if I'm doing those things, I'm probably also ignoring the word of God. Realistically, I'm not making any time. If I'm not self disciplined enough to sit down and read the word and if I'm not self disciplined enough, I'm not probably not making my own food. That's a mindset. Yes, I'm glad you said that because I think this would be a good place to end here. Mark and Kim Spelman, the many times they come over to me and Jessica's house because they were kind of close mentors for a while while it was available for that season. One of the things they told us was how you do anything is how you do everything. And so, if you like discipline in one area, you're more than likely. I'm going to say you are undisciplined in other areas as well, right? You may still have one area that you're good in, but you have one area of lack of discipline, like eating, then it's like, okay, well, then let's look, you know, well, how much time is in the word? Yeah. Oh, okay, not, you know, and I'm not saying you have to be in there a certain amount of time, but it's like, oh, like, are you setting it? Are you setting it? You're not making that a priority at all. It's just when it's convenient. And it's like, okay, oh, well, he never praised unless something bad happens. You know, it's like, okay, like, we're just doing things around the convenient now instead of that quote yesterday. Really? Yeah, that's crazy. I don't know if I want to say where I do. It was off John Wick. John Wick? It's the new John Wick. It's the leader. The fourth one? Yeah, the leader of the hotel guy, Jonathan, whatever, you know, that guy, he says, how you do anything is how you do everything, or something like that, or how you do a thing is how you do everything. Right, and it's true. Yeah, it really is true. So change the way you do one thing, and it'll help you change the way you do everything. Jordan Peterson says, before you can change the world, learn to make your own bed. Yeah. Make your own bed. You've accomplished something for the day. You've made your world a better place. So you've started with you. So start with you. Start with the word of God. Amen. Pray this out, my brother. Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, thank you for this conversation. Thank you for being seamless. I pray I didn't talk too much. Father, I just, I know I'm passionate about this. I know Charlie's passionate about this. We love this podcast. We love talking to each other. We love talking about these subjects. We love talking to other people. And I pray, Father, that if we've said anything that is offensive, but not just offensive to other people, but mainly offensive to the word of God, anything that's not in alignment with your word, we don't want it to bear any fruit, Father. We want it to fall dead and blow away with the chat. Lord, we praise you. We thank you for the opportunity to come together and do this. I pray for safekeeping for us and our families as we go home, as we go about the rest of our week. And I just pray peace in our community for all these people that are being, all these wrecks and people who are getting hit by car's father and people that are just going missing, Lord, just peace in our community, Father. That peace that can only come from you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen.
