Welcome to the Professional Podcast Network, where brilliance meets business. Elevate your brand and supercharge your revenue with inspiring insights and innovation. Hello everyone and welcome back to the show. I'm your host Matt and today my guest is Dodge Dorland, who is formerly Chief Investment Officer at Landor Infused Capital Managers and is now based in Madawan, New Jersey. How are you doing today, Dodge? Just fine, thank you for having me. Well thanks for being here. So why don't you give us some background into your career and what you do. Well I was very competitive in nature when I grew up, I was a tennis player and I tried out for the Davis Cup team and that competition made me want to get involved with the stock market and after I finished my normal education, I looked for ways to educate myself about what was going on in stocks and I found out there were two basic things, there was fundamental analysis, how companies were doing in terms of their earnings, etc. But there also was something called technical analysis and I was wondering what that was and that helped me join the Market Technicians Association and I learned all about the fact that sometimes companies, on the investment in companies, the actual stock moves based on the perception of how the company is doing, the perception of the future and that really got me interested and so I took a lot of time to learn about technical and fundamental analysis and boy that set me up for investing and I was very lucky, very fortunate to be involved with both those institutions, the CFA Institute and the Market Technicians Association. What would you say is your area of expertise? My area of expertise would be in analyzing how a stock moves in contemplation of how people, how investors feel it's doing fundamentally and being able to adapt to changes not only in terms of the perception of the company but also the perception of individual investors. How many years did you spend doing this? Oh, about 30, 40 years altogether, I see and what inspired you down your career path? Individuals who guided me down the path and some very interesting ideas as I was going down, for example in technical analysis, one of the first things I learned about how pilots of ships back in centuries ago would go into harbors and they would go on and they would find there were shoals and rocks and all sorts of things that they had to remember so they would write it down in the pilot's book and that was one of the big themes that I learned in terms of technical analysis, to write down when I did trades, the first thing I would do, there are three items I would always write down, one is the environment and what I did, the second was the results, whether they go to bed and regardless of whether they were good or bad, the third and the most important thing was the lesson I learned from them and the fact of just actually writing them down made me think and it was easier for me to remember going forward and just like pilots of ships would take their ships back to the same harbors and so therefore their knowledge of what was going on really helped them so did the fact that I had gone through different experiences, different stocks, yes different environments, yes but certain elements were the same and so I could remember and learn from past either pluses or minuses and it helped me going forward. What do you attribute your success to? Students by individuals who were involved with the market and being able to admit that I was wrong, also there were times because I was a trader I would get in and out of stocks very quickly and sometimes when I was right it would go up or down depending on whether I was long or short, it would go up much much more so I learned how to I guess it was like watching a football game go into the stands and cheer the people who were still in the stock and congratulate them for staying in and just being happy with the gains that I had achieved at the time. That's very interesting so for anyone out there I guess who's curious or wants to learn more about this what are some good ways to get in touch with you? My phone number or my email I will try I mean it's been a lot of fun so I enjoy giving back to the environment, to the industry that I really enjoyed for so long. My email address would be d-d-o-r-l-a-n-d-49 at gmail.com it is probably the easiest and fastest way to get me and obviously I will try to be good and trying to respond in ways that would help whether the individuals are in the industry or young and trying to learn about what goes on in the market I'm more than happy to help in any way that I can. Alright well I want to thank you again for talking with us today and sharing some insight into your profession. My pleasure and thank you for having me I really appreciate it. Oh you're welcome and take care. You too. And to the rest of our listeners stay tuned because we'll be back with more guests after these messages. (upbeat music)
