Let's just press pause because Nick Casario, General Manager of the Texans, had his and it wasn't like a special emergency press conference. I think some people got that impression. Texans are on a bi-week. That's usually when during the regular season we'll hear from the General Manager of the team. They'll even be required because it seems to happen pretty regularly. Feels like it's required, right? Yeah, so here's Casario from yesterday on the subject of the Aziz al-Shire suspension for the concussion-inducing hit on Trevor Lawrence. And after the league to make some of the commentary that D made about lack of sportsmanship, lack of coachability, lack of paying attention to the rules, quite frankly it's embarrassing. So I think the big thing from our, and I talk about a player who's never been suspended, never been ejected. So now we're saying that he's going to be suspended for three games. So, look, it is what it is. I think the big thing from our standpoint and all teams want, there's just some level of consistency. And we've talked at a league quite frankly, but we don't have a good explanation. Timiko talked to them yesterday. So, I mean, it is what it is. I'm sure Aziz will go through whatever process he's going to go through and then we'll deal with it accordingly. But I think what we take on bridge is just the picture that's been painted about Aziz, his intentions, who he is as a person. I mean, it's quite frankly, it's bull and it's unfair to the individual, it's unfair to the organization. I mean, we love everything about Aziz al-Shire, what he means to this team, what he brings to this team. It was elected a captain after being here for four months. That's pretty strong stuff, a guy who doesn't have a history of selling stuff. And when I first heard that Nick Casario called the fine and the suspension, not the fine, but the suspension bullshit, I thought he was referring to the substance of it, what he's referring to is the way it's been characterized. And I think he's overstating a little bit the strength of the letter from John Runyon to Aziz al-Shire. I'll agree that it does paint him as a bad guy, but it's not quite as over the top as Nick Casario is saying. It's just gutsy to kind of stick your finger in the eye of Big Shield and is somebody who, you know... - Does that quite often? - Fingers on his fingers from 23 years of doing it. And I say bravo, good sir, you always have to be willing to stand up to the NFL and point out when they're doing something they shouldn't be doing. I just thought, look, you got to defend your guy. - That's right. - You got to defend your guy. - Right. - And I feel like that's part of it. But look, there's an appeal process. And my first reaction was, it's just best to not say anything until after we know what the final verdict is through one of the four individuals, Derek Brooks, Ramon Foster, Kevin Moai, and Jordy Nelson, one of those four will handle the appeal. And even though they're not league employees directly, they're part of this structure. You don't want to be dropping turds in punch balls while they're still a process to play out. So that part made me nervous, even though it's not the league that makes the final decision. - No, I think you said it. He's sticking up for his guy. He's sticking up for a guy that is extremely well respected. I think that's the big thing. He plays hard for the most part, up to this point, plays the game the way every defensive coach wants their middle linebacker to play. He was loved in San Francisco with that group there, and Demico Ryan, and that's why he's there. I think what Nick Casario is talking about is, he's probably going, wait, the three games seems a little egregious. And he's talking about, yeah, he's never been suspended in those issues. You know, just say the unsportsman-like part, I'll disagree with Nick Casario there. You know, Shair went a little crazy on the field. So there definitely was some unsportsman-like attitude. But at the same time, too, I do think it went overboard with some of the talks, some of the things you see on social media and all that. And I think that's also what he's sticking up for, because people have taken liberty of just going, religion, color, skin, all the bull crap that you don't want to hear. There's nothing to do with anything, and that's where it's freaking wrong, the whole subject. And that's where I don't like that, and I think that's where Nick Casario is sticking up for a guy who he goes, wait, he's a leader of our team, he loves football, he plays really hard, he's intense, and he had a bad moment. And most football players have had some bad moments where they just go a little too far and go, I got to the red line, I didn't hit the break, and I just went gas pedal. And then, of course, tempers flared from everybody. I mean, Evan Ingram decks him in the back, and of course, what'd you think? As he sells Cheyere, we're going to go, "Oh, well, thank you, Mr. Ingram and the rest of the team." So, I mean, that's part of football to a degree of what happened after that, and I don't think he should be so, you know, just for lack of a better way, crapped on by everybody on social media because of it. I guess that's what I'm trying to get to there. For somebody who doesn't pay attention to social media, you seem to be very aware of the social media reaction. I do. I do. Well, I see enough articles, I see enough to where I scroll through things just real quick to go through it and see what people are saying on the bottom of that. Yeah, I'm not one that's going to write social media, and I'm not sitting there going down a wormhole of other crap on social media that I don't care about. But when it comes to football and stuff, I scroll a little. We continue to have a presence on Twitter because we've got a big footprint there, and I'm not giving it up, but I have spent less and less time in that that hellscape. Yeah, you can't. You just got to look at what you know and skip over the rest of the idiots in the world there. But let me say this, and I may be wrong. I mean, you mentioned the possibility of Islamophobia and racism, and Aziz al-Shire had that in his own statement from Monday morning. I didn't see any of that. I mean, this is equal opportunity. That's an illegal hit. Color of your skin and your religion doesn't matter. That was an illegal egregious hit. Now, maybe there's, you know, the same incels out there that want to complain about anything and everything that anyone says. Yeah, I think that's what it is a little. We're saying that, but I didn't see any of that, and that's not the issue. Because it clouds the issue. No, I think right. The issue is he went in hot, elbow up, bed-narrick style, and he blew up Trevor Lawrence because he thought he was getting a free shot. Hey, I'm getting a free shot. I'm taking it. I'm taking my free shot. That was the whole message that came from the way he went in and embraced that moment. Yeah, no, I agree. And when you talk about the football aspect and all that, listen, I'm certainly not letting him off the hook. I mean, yeah, we talked about it. It's tough. It's a tough moment. It's a tough spot. But he's seen hundreds of quarterback slides since he's been in the NFL. He knows what it looks like, what it's about to look like. And he knows more times than not, like the quarterback is going to slide. And the biggest thing is, like, we talked about he didn't do anything to stop. I'm not sticking up for that. I'm really not. But I think what I was saying is part of what Nick Casario is sticking up for. It's not only the league. It's the chatter around it. And that's where it's not cool. And that's where you see, whether you go on Instagram and look at comments or Twitter, you do see some of that crap. And that's where it's stupid. And it goes overboard. And I think that's probably why part of Nick Casario coming out so strong, too. And it really was surprising to see him say what he said. And there was enough in there that feels like it's being directed at the league, at John Runyon, at the press release, at the way this was handled. It makes you curious as to whether or not there's going to be any pushback for Nick Casario. Because guys get fined a few times a year, we see it, where after a game, there's a comment that's critical of the officials. And the NFL has a pretty bright line when it comes to that. I wonder what the league's reaction will be when it comes to this, because I don't remember this happening. I don't remember a guy blowing a gasket like that. I'm not saying he was being irrational, but I don't remember that kind of vitriol being directed at the league after the league sends out a letter to a guy letting him know he's being suspended or otherwise punished. How many personal fouls has he had through his career? Those are things like I didn't look it up. I know the NFL would probably, they probably have all that stuff written down somewhere. They have a window where they cut it off. I think they go back two years. He had a fine for throwing a punch on the sideline. I remember that. I'm going to hit on Caleb Williams week two. And there's a video out there of him. He's the guy who put his hand on Tom Brady's throat a few years ago when he was with the 49ers and Brady was with the Buccaneers. So those are the two that I've seen. There might be more that are out there. And again, put it in the letter. If you're going to make vague, if you're going to paint this guy as a villain and you have a history of this stuff, it's irresponsible National Football League. What dare I say to quote Nick Casario bullshit to not identify all the things he did? Don't just say, this is a bad guy. Here's the setup. This is a bad guy. Well, you'll continue disregard. That's the one that would be working. Before we impose punishment, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, before we impose punishment on this individual, we must tell you this. This is a bad guy. You think this three games gets upheld or do you think it gets cut down to two after some deliberation there? I don't know that this happens, but I think human nature would suggest that at some level it does. And I suspect it doesn't pay an insubstantial amount of money. I have a feeling there's probably times when these hearing officers get the impression directly or indirectly that the league feels pretty strongly about this. Yeah, right. Stand your ground. If you want to keep doing this, if you want to keep doing this. This is probably an area to exercise some discretion out because think about this. Think about this. We haven't heard a damn thing from the NFL Players Association. We haven't heard a single word. Now, they're in a tough spot because they got to protect both guys, but we haven't heard anyone from the NFL PA come out and say this was aggressive or excessive. I was, I pulled a Sims. I was trying to, I pulled a Sims isn't that was actually a word, but wasn't the right word. I was going for egregious and excessive and I said aggressive, but aggressive is a word. This was egregious and or excessive. So to me, if I'm, if I'm the person who likes this job and at some level, I'm getting the vibe as to who am I going to piss off with this ruling. I'm going to be more likely to piss off the NFL. If I reduce it, then I'll piss off the NFL PA if I don't. And if you think that's cynical, well, welcome to reality. I, I, I listen, I think that's a rookie who just is like, whoa, linebackers are a little faster than I thought. I thought I'd be able to get out of bounds and I didn't get there. It hasn't learned by week 13. Well, yeah, he, he pushes the limit. He'd be another one. He would. But that's to me what I think maybe more of what the NFL is talking about. And again, you know, bad on me. I should have researched this more last night to go back and look. Shire personal fouls, late hits, the last two years. I guarantee that's part of this whole process and John Runan's, Runyon's thinking as well. That's not your job. And it's not my job. No, I know. I know. It's my first job. Yeah. If you're going to set the table for a three game suspension for Aziz al Shire by painting him as a villain, you need to bring the goods. You need to show us the bodies. If this is a bad guy that's been shooting up towns all over the Old West, you got to show us. You can't just say it. You got to give us the proof National Football League. So it's disappointing that the league didn't do it. To this year, the hand on Tommy's throat now, shout not touch the great and powerful goat. So I don't know if he got punished for that. Again, and again, I remember at some point when they really started to be aggressive with fines and we're increasing the fines and we increased the fines and eventually we suspend us. We did the Darwin James earlier this year. It's the whole concept of progressive discipline. We're going to impose a low level fine in the hopes that it works. If it doesn't, then you can find more. If that doesn't work, then you can find more. At some point, you get suspended that every every responsible organization in America has a system of progressive discipline. If this is progressive, it's excessive because you're going from 11 to 11, like either the history did matter or it didn't. And I don't think the history should matter for something that egregious. I just think this is part of the political effort to paint him as a bad guy. You don't need to paint him as a bad guy. And if you're going to paint him as a bad guy, you better bring the paint. It wasn't the biggest talking point coming out of Bear's Lions by any stretch, but Caleb Williams, I don't know what he was trying to do here. I almost feel like he was trying to do the Lamar Jackson kind of stop and let the guy run by. Definitely. I think that's what he was trying to do. But he has no idea how it works at the NFL level. And you're not Lamar Jackson. Caleb Williams, you're a special athlete. And you're potentially going to be a superstar and a Hall of Famer and an eight-time Super Bowl winner, which he has said he wants to be, but you're not Lamar Jackson as evidenced by that. And he was upset about it. Caleb, that's your fault. We love you, Caleb. That's on you. That's the punishment. That's what you get for getting cute there. And this wasn't, I'm trying to draw a foul. No, he was trying to stop and cut back and stop. Let him go by. But part of the risk you take is he's not going to go by. And if he takes out your knee like he did, that's not a dirty hit. That's not an illegal hit. That is a guy who's a running back who's making a bad decision about how he's using his body. Yeah, well, he runs like a running back a lot of time. And his ability to cut and make moves and do all that. I mean, listen, you said Lamar Jackson is about the only guy that can make, I mean, Caleb Williams breaks people's ankles in space. That's what he was trying to do there. I mean, you're right. Well, you know what happened too. I mean, show the play again, guys, as he's trying to make the cut, his right leg slips out from underneath him. Watch him when we show these angles. He almost hurts himself with non-contact. If you watch his right leg, it buckles right here. Watch this step, see? And it slides out from underneath him and he can't even make the cut. And then that leaves him vulnerable himself. But you're right. He's got nothing to complain about there. Campbell is totally within his rights of what he's doing. And if you want to flirt with danger and cut it back inside to where all the big boys and the crazy boys are, then you better be ready for some crazy contact. And that's just the way it goes. And yeah, he's got to learn that. There's no question. And Campbell was just going to make the tackle. He wasn't trying to take out his knees to get the guy out of bounds. All right. Here's Tom Brady from the herd with Colin Coward yesterday on the responsibility he believes that play callers have when it comes to design runs and the responsibility he believes there maybe should be on quarterbacks for sliding the late and the punishment that they should possibly endure because of it. Have a listen. The aspect, again, for a play caller, there's more design runs for quarterbacks ever now than in the history of the NFL. So are we really trying to protect quarterbacks? Because if you are trying to do it through the rules, then why are the offensive coordinators not protecting their quarterbacks by keeping them in the pocket and not designing as many quarterback runs? So I think it's gone to a point where everyone would label a certain player as a dirty player. I don't like that one bit. Maybe they find or penalize a quarterback for sliding late and say, "Look, if we don't want these hits to take place, we've got to penalize the offense and the defense rather than just penalize a defensive player for every single play that happens when there's a hit on a quarterback." Look, I don't disagree with the point that he makes about play callers because you're deliberately putting your guy in harm's way when you call the design run. And it's on him at that point to get out of bounds, get down, know when to slide, slide early, call or marry when he slides, he slides early and away from everyone. He does everything fast. He does everything fast, including slide. The idea that it's a thought that popped into his head and it came out of his mouth. Like how would you even, I said this earlier, how would you begin to know when to penalize a guy for sliding late? You know it when you see it if there's a fake slide. You know it when you see it if there's a sideline okey-doke. A late slide is something that could not be properly identified in a way that everyone would agree. There's no know it when you see it. You know, it's very, very, very subjective. So I think that that takes it a little too far. I don't know. What do you think about it? No, no. I think you're right. It's tough. I don't know. It's not going to be something that's going to be like definitive. That's going to be the problem. Like you said, it is subjective. It's almost going to be like the catch and the two steps and is that a football move or not? I mean, it would almost have to be that type of thing where you allow, I don't know, the defenders allowed to take one more step, of course, or something of that nature. Or if the quarterback slides and then he, as he's sliding, he basically takes the defenders legs out from underneath them and almost hurts his knee. Like, you know, that's, that's the legal late slide, whatever. I don't know. They're going to have to figure that out. It's going to be very hard to your point. That's going to be very hard. And yeah, the league is different now. I mean, Brady's right. The quarterback design runs, guys like Anthony Richardson and Josh Allen, like you better breaks yourself to hit those big efforts. I mean, you know what's coming to town with those guys. And that's where, again, it's a little tough on these guys as well because they're like, wait, Josh Allen ran me over a few plays before. So let me brace. I got to get ready. Oh, now he slid and I was getting ready to hit a guy that's 248 pounds and runs for six. So that's where I do feel for them. And that's where it's hard. Now, where it's like weird with Brady and all of that, too, and going into that is a lot of these rules are here because of Tom Brady and nobody benefited more from them than Tom Brady. So it has a little bit of like the ivory tower guy up there going like, you shouldn't do that quarterbacks, even though I did that every time I ran my whole life. And that's where I think a little people had pissed some people off yesterday. Sorry, London. Well, and then some. I mean, he didn't just utilize the slide as a way to secure extra protection from himself. He used the slide as a weapon from time to time. And I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone by pointing out Tom Brady's on field history. He mentioned the word dirty player. The way I see it dirty is as dirty does. And we got some evidence of Tom Brady sliding aggressively and sliding in a way that allowed him to potentially do on to others what they were trying to do on to him. Who can forget this one? This was a playoff game. I believe the slide. That's a, that's every bit as a latest. That's a later slide than Trevor Lawrence's. That's not even close. So if you want penalize, there's AFC divisional game, or I think it's divisional game this year. I think it was a champion champion. Then penalize them. Take them back 15. It's not first in goal for New England anymore. Yeah, that's fine. So that's where I'm $10,000 for that. And I think Reed said after the pack, after the fact that he needed surgery, that he ended up with a hip injury that required surgery from that kick with that big ass size 15 cleat of Tom Brady going into his leg. I mean, what the hell is that? What is that? And isn't it amazing? Isn't it amazing that it wasn't a bigger deal at the time here? This is this is from his. It was a bigger deal. A lot of Patriots fans wouldn't let it become a big deal. And if it was, he just got crapped on by them. Yeah, this was horrible. That's a slide kick. That's Johnny. Put him in a body bag. Karate Kid right here. Yeah. What is that Tom? Yeah. And you know what? That was never regarded as anything. That there was never an issue over that. And maybe it's because it ended up being, was that his last game? Yeah, that was his last game. No, no, no, it was. That was it. He had multiple last game. So I can't remember. I'm thinking the loss to the Rams and the playoffs, but that was the game that he ultimately, that he ultimately, uh, unretired from. And this is the, this, remember this, this was the Grady Jarrett, nothing, the passer. And Tom kicks him afterward. Jarrett got flagged. Yeah. Tom does it again. I think Tom got fined. Tom got fined for the kick. I think they called a penalty on Grady Jarrett right here, didn't they? I think one of these, they call a penalty. Like a legal. So yeah, I mean, listen, I understand. And that's where a lot of people are like, wait, these rules are what they are. And nobody took advantage and did late. That's as late as it gets. Let alone who complained more about, oh, he hit me illegal more than Tom Brady. That's what everybody drove crazy about Tom Brady. He got every call in the world and he says, that's egregiously late. Another slide that is way later than Trevor Lawrence. Chris, Chris, this one, because we wrote about it when it happened, because I thought that was a, that I thought that was a dirty tie cob style move. And there was never a peep about it. There was never, and, and look, you know, this is the problem we now have. Guy was one of the all-time greats. He still is the goat until he's dethroned by Patrick Mahomes. He's the most prominent broadcaster at Fox, making 37 and a half million a year. He owns 10% of the Raiders. He's integrally involved in everything that is football now. And he's going to be spouting off these ideas. It's one thing for a dumb shit like me to be spouting off bad ideas. When Tom Brady starts spouting off bad ideas, that's a problem. Well, when he starts attacking Daniel Jones when he shouldn't, and we haven't talked about that. We don't have time to. That's a problem. He's got a bully pulpit and somebody better talk to him. He needs somebody in his life who can say to him, Tom, you're saying some dumb shit. And you've got a pretty big platform here. You need to use it a little more responsibly. I don't agree with you. I don't agree with what the stuff he said on Daniel Jones. So I'm with you there all the way. That was, you know, I don't think he's seeing that picture totally for what it is there. I don't, again, I don't think his thought is necessarily all that bad yesterday. I don't think it's bad. I think he's just trying to penalize quarterbacks. Well, I know or something has to be done a little bit. I think it's all he's trying to get to. But I do as we're talking about it here and we've seen this a lot. And we see it in every game of the quarterback sliding too late and then getting up and asking for a penalty because they did it. Like, Hey, I slid into his knee and his knee hit me. Call the penalty. And we've seen that too much. And I think that point is real. Now, again, it seems a little shallow from a guy who capitalized off that more than anybody I've ever seen in my life. And I get that. But I don't disagree with his thought a little bit and also that just Mike, you hear me every Sunday. It's so hard for these defenders right now. There's so many rules to help the offense out. And I guess that's where I have a little bit of a soft spot in my heart as well. As I said earlier, a late slide is its own punishment because you get blown up. Yeah, I hear you did. Right. And the other guy doesn't get penalized or fined. And I'll leave it at that. But what happens when you do late slide and nothing happens to you and now guy that hit you by accident because he's like tripped by you and they call a penalty on guy that hit quarterback. I know, but I'm saying in other scenarios that we've seen before. I know that didn't happen. We've seen that before. Right. But my point is is if you're ever going to begin to try to figure out when to flag a guy for a late slide and you have a situation where the guy slides late and he gets contacted, then there shouldn't be a flag. There shouldn't be a flag. And if it's difficult to determine that, think about how hard it would be to determine whether to flag the guy for a late. A flag. That's my point. A late slide. That's my point. You can't. It's hard enough to parse this out without throwing on top of it the obligation to know when to throw a flag on a guy for sliding late. The timing of the slide is already creating enough trouble when it comes to figuring out whether to flag the defender. It's a very, and maybe you just take the slide out of the game. Maybe you just take the I don't, you know, you just, you don't slide. If you become a runner, you got two choices. Get out of bounds or get tackled. If you become a runner. I have no problem with that. So be it. No problem. But this whole idea that the slide is to get out of jail free car. Yes, that. I think that's what Brady's trying to say a little. Then let's just, let's, let's, let's see, let's have the conversation about them. We didn't take a break. But let's just eliminate the slide. I would love that. I would love that. Let's just give it a fucking slide. Oops. Let's just get rid of the slide. But there's no way that's going to happen. There's no way it's going to happen. Why not? Because we're in the, we're in an era right now of like, it's the ultimate, protect the quarterback at all costs. He matters more than anything else on the football team. Don't run. I know, but it just, I don't think that's going to happen right now. If you run, if you run, you're, you're, you're like, you don't, do we ever see a running back slide? No, we see a running back go down is strategically to work the clock and win the game. That's it. So I, I think we're onto something. We will break. We'll come back with more PFT live.
