Hello everyone, welcome back to the show. I'm your host, Matt, and right now I'm talking with Robin Monahan, who is the owner of Robin Monahan Interiors in Delray Beach, Florida. How are you doing today, Robin? Great, thank you. How are you? I'm doing well. So why don't you tell me a little bit more about you and your business? So I've been an interior designer for over 30 years, and I've had my company, I opened my company 23 years ago, and I've been working on residential, mostly once in a while, do a little commercial job, but I don't particularly care for them. I work local and I used to work from Miami to Jupiter. Now I'm mostly just in Palm Beach County, and an interesting thing about what we do in Florida is a lot of people are from out of town, so we do their Florida home. Some people have waited their whole life to buy their Florida home. It's their, you know, their end, their vacation home, so that's what we get to do for them, and that's kind of fun. And it could be their Florida home, their primary residence, their second home, their third home, their fourth home, and a lot of people are from Europe all over Europe and up north, and a lot of my clients aren't even in town when I work on their place, which is really nice. I just get kind of the place to myself, and I get it done for them, and then they come in, and then it's all ready for them. And you said you primarily work in residential spaces? Correct. So what inspired you to pursue this profession? Well, I was in the fashion industry, which I started out as a young person in fashion. And my mother passed, who was an influence of mine in fashion, and it just kind of really backed my feet out from underneath me, and my, one of my best friends said to me, "What do you see yourself doing?" I said, "I always thought I'd be a set designer." I said, "Well, I don't know anybody in film, but I have somebody at Marshall Field in Chicago in interior design. Why don't you talk to him? Anyhow, he was this great influence in my life and just sent me everywhere for continued education, and he was a great inspiration. So I went from fashion design right into interior fashion, and that's really why I went that route. And I'm so glad because I started with a great company, and they schooled me and really treated me like a queen, and I had the best education and best clientele. And it really does, you do have a great clientele with interior design. People that are working on their home, they're working on their life, and all you do is get to do that for them. And so it really is kind of a cherry-picked job. Is there anything about you or your business you want our listeners to know about today? I think that I'm doing it for them, and that one of the things that my most important creative tool is listening to them, because everything they say to me goes in like a vault. And I'm just listening for all the keys that I need to hear so I can design especially for them. So it's like I'm building the blocks for their home, and then I deliver it. And it's usually just so spot on. A lot of designers like to give a couple of choices. I come in with one choice, and I give it to them, and they're like, "Yes, perfect. That's what I want." And I think that's the best I can do for everybody. And that's my goal, and that's, I think, that's the best you can do, is really listen and then deliver exactly what they want, even know clients don't even know what they want most of the time.
