Inside Texas Football
Deep Dive: Texas Offense's Strategy to Defeat Georgia
Welcome to the deep dive it is championship weekend Texas Longhorns were taken on the Georgia dogs and that's right bulldogs are genetically unfit very cute I like bulldogs, but If you leave them down on their vices, they can't even reproduce you It's just a fact What what are you talking about? They have giant heads and all Bulldogs are born by c-section. Oh, really? Yeah, I didn't realize that that makes sense though because they always have those little Squatty a little I missed leg day Back limbs. They're genetic monstrosities, but they're cute Makes sense. I think it could get out of there. This tells us this is a hell of a start. I agree It is a hell of a start. This is why we're one of the elite shows In the inside texas channel and if you like inside texas, you need to subscribe to youtube channel But you really need to do is go subscribe it inside texas. It's the silly season sale Ian Get this wherever the sprint to national signing day texas just signed a Number one ranked class on this signing period Uh, of course, there's a lot of stuff going on open coaching jobs New offensive coordinators for our bitter rivals portal moves And of course the texas law horns are playing for an scc title in their first year in the conference Ian $1 get you seven days join inside texas today or don't join and just remain ignorant All right, have you seen that meme from uh Legally blonde where the agis are like wait, you got into harvard law and then it's uh Whatever her name is and she's like what like it's supposed to be hard and it's texas and the scc chain digit game It's a good reason. Hell. Hell. Yeah Reese witherspoon. Yeah, I kind of drew a blank on both the character name and the actress name You don't know anything about bulldog. So it's a pretty bad start for you. Fortunately, Ian does know some stuff about football And we're going to talk about that. So What we want to do is talk about Some of the things that texas can do to have a little better performance particularly on offense against the georgia bulldogs truth is georgia came in and people say georgia dominated texas actually no georgia dominated the texas offense The texas defense brought it to georgia and if they'd had any support at all from the offense texas wins that game. However uh, the texas offense um What's the word for in the bed? I'd like to use they Soiled their bed so thoroughly that there was no chance for a good texas defense performance to be saved. However the good news is Rematches allow for a lot of different things to happen football is a dynamic game You can make adjustments. You can do different stuff And you're only as good as your last game of course. So the last couple of games, Ian A young man named contrabian wisener rushed for 26 times from 158 yards against kentucky 33 times for 186 yards against the texas a and m aggies And basically texas has really shown some improvements in basic run blocking particularly zone blocking particularly outside zone blocking I'm wondering if this new improvement Maybe a tool or a solution that will help open up the texas offense So the idea here is not that we're going to rush for 300 yards against georgia The idea here is that we run the ball effectively enough that a really athletic Speedy and quick georgia front Has to play honest And isn't allowed to do a bunch of stunts and line games that really exploit and feature their quicknesses Their quickness, I should say singularly Uh, which was a big problem for texas in Austin So Ian, let's talk about this outside zone run game and this base and how it might be effective in Putting a little hurtin on georgia and opening up a passing game Yeah, I think we can almost start by saying if texas can run the ball with their running backs 25 to 30 times That's a very very good sign Forget the yardage the yardage could be 80 90 yards, whatever But if you're able to run the ball that many times without, you know, just burying your offense and you're picking up Two to four yards to carry but at least two to four That might do the trick Because then you're just talking about you only have to sprinkle in a couple drives where you hit some throws and you're scoring And then you know presumably play great on defense again um Outside zone is the play for that for texas this year Earlier in the year when they were about to play georgia. I was like, I think outside zone might be the Longward secret sauce this season And then they came into this game and they tried to run duo and they tried to run counter and they got stuffed by the dogs And they ran some outside zone too and they also had mixed results on that play. They've been doing it a lot better since then They have to get it Decent this week Well, let's talk about it. It's one thing to tell it's another thing to show Let's show Here is the university of texas running Outside zone I like this version of it because they're blocking back with the right side of the line in man blocking And it gives a little bit of a false key For like the weak side linebacker the weak side linebacker. It's like the Guys to his side of the field are initially stepping away from him So it's almost like a pass set or a downhill run in his direction And then he realizes late. Oh, the ball is fast flowing in the opposite direction Yeah, I think a A very good job here You'll notice the double team out on the edge that extends out the hole makes the hole big And you'll notice Ian that there's actually a couple of holes here. You've got One here. You got one in the middle and then you want one actually on the cutback If this was bijon robinson, he would have cut it back just to show off right Uh, but this is a great example of and I believe this is out of 11 personnel. Is that right? Uh No, this is 12 because they have one Davis on top training on the top. There you go. So this is small personnel um, and it's it's a good example of The right amount of hold and push on the double team and notice the push that you're getting here from jake majors He actually gets push and turns their nose tackle, which is huge anytime your center can win one on one Uh, you're gonna win that run run rep more often than not So a great example of a really cleanly blocked timed up well executed run play and we hadn't been doing that this year. Our timing is getting better You know, one other thing I actually only just noticed on this play Is that they have one Davis run a flat route in the receiver on top run a slant Hmm to create an additional Hold on the weak side linebacker just pulling people from pursuit. Yep. I like it. Which is how you hit That's that's how you create even more gaps and outside zone also I love having a passing offense, etc But stuff like this is where you wish that you had a running quarterback sometimes Because the keeper for this we're quidded, you know Uh sprints straight up the field Um, that's that's wide open when that starts to hit. So, um, all good I don't mind a quarterback who throws for 4 000 yards. So that's fine too All right, you want to talk about the next one? Can't wait for that to happen. Yeah All right, this is 11 And they got the slot in motion Which for everybody When you motion the slot from one side of the formation to the other The defense has to change all their assignments and fits at the last minute Or they have to have that nickel chase him like they do here You know what I would like about this? They combine that with the pistol Where the back is running downhill at the snap Yes, so it's not lateral at the snap Trade wise there's already got his shoulder pad squared and he's looking for daylight Outside zone is traditionally much better from under center or the pistol than it is from the gun 100% So if we can just rewind i want to show the play side blocking And what's a little different here? So again, this is a great job by Jake majors and Hayden Conner on the play side They're going to double team that tackle Okay And you're going to see a really effective double team because they're not only going to sort of screen the guy or occupy them Which is what we've been doing early in the year. They're going to they're going to push him Okay, they're not only pushing him. They're now turning his shoulder That's what allows them to now get up to the second level and look for other guys You you don't need to be doing that until you get push on the guy that's on the line of scrimmage And what we've been doing earlier in the year is abandoning the double team too quickly to climb up And that initial defensive tackle Was was causing the the running back either he was either tackling the running back or he was causing the running back to sort of bounce Or not be able to cut it sharply And so this is really where it's important the timing and the marrying up of the blocking I mean, you see there that's a defensive tackle now five yards driven down the field From from the initial effects of that double team And that is you know trey wiser is not touched until he's gone Five yards here This is the kind of thing that uh converted you on this play Because greg gave us used to run this play and it would drive you nuts You'd run you'd write these long essays on outside zone on on barking carnival about how The running scheme was robbing all the alignment of their natural aggression Yeah Because you got to watch shanahan do it up close in san francisco when you live there and it was like this is awesome Yeah Yeah, there there's one there it's one thing to say we run outside zone It's another thing to actually run outside zone correctly And this is outside zone correctly The timings married up I love the little piece of the motion that you talked about which distracts their eyes and gets them sort of off kilter And then I love running it from pistol Um, it's we're never going to be an under center football team But when you run it from the pistol you get the same effect more or less And so this is a great example of effective outside zone and you're running to daylight here. It's good. It's good football It's hilarious how Poorly the Aggies played against this stuff Yeah, what's funny is this out playing against outside zone was their strength All You all had weeks You all had weeks for this game is just Goes down on the Aggies did Aggied up fall on their face. Yeah All right, let's look at another example here We're in the offset. We're not doing the pistol here. But again, we're going to have a little distracting motion Set this is 12 again. I think I think that's an eye black. That's an eye black. That's just 12. We were out. Yeah Watch the initial steps of the O1. This is how you know it's outside zone, right? Yeah And then we're gonna hand it off. But look We've got Gunnar Helm cutting back against the flow to do what Ian Catch that guy And and don't let him get past him. Yep. We don't want a free runner on the backside Right, we're doing that And it's not like like split inside zone like Tom Herman would run you need to go hammer that guy Yeah, try to widen that lane out when an outside zone The line is creating they're moving so far laterally. It creates the cup back naturally This guy actually does something wrong here Instead of meeting gutter helm He tries to run away from him and just pursue where he thinks the ball is going to go And what is that going to create mr. Boyd? That's that's a big no. No, that's a big no. No, and that's a big cut back lane And as I love Trey wisener. I absolutely love what he's given to us but This is where bijon robinson might make a house call Right Yeah And you might want to cut it up He cut it outside Fine But he might have wanted to cut plant and cut that straight up the field to the green And just deal with that safety that safety up at the top of the screen Because if you get past him that's going for 82 yards So again, a great example of hey, well these guys are all moving laterally We're all going to react to it and rally to the football Well, if you rally too much to the football You can create these cutbacks now Georgia is pretty disciplined on defense generally But i'll say this Fast players like to run fast on the football field They don't like to stand around And georgia has really fast linebackers and really fast edges And they don't always like to sit and wait and watch Playing their their responsibility, but here's an example of where georgia does exactly that So they're going to run the ball play side georgia tech had good success running the ball um But you'll notice georgia does a decent job here at at the point of attack But that guy over there see what he's not doing He's not just abandoning containment on the backside So if Hanes, I think here is the georgia tech running back if he wanted to cut back here He's going to have a couple of bulldogs that are going to have something to say about it who have leverage on them And then the uh, it's also hard to reach block georgia defensive lineman at the play side. Yeah Because they are big and strong and well coached And and long But they do pretty decently here where they just get a little push and he squeezes through an arrow window So that's it and that's where tray wisener's been effective for us, right? So we're not looking again We're not trying to run for 300 yards on georgia If this play can be blocked this way and we get five that's a win Yes, because eventually georgia is going to have to play effectively base defense At least up front They're not going to be able to run all their lines and their schemes and their games which Uh, which they have incredible quickness, which gives anyone problems, but all that movement and clutter first of all it gets tight ends and running backs paired up on Georgia defensive ends and linebackers, which we don't want It also frankly just quin yours doesn't handle that very well He doesn't handle a messy pocket. Well where he's getting unexpected push or pressure Or and even if the guy's blocked Just the guy being in his proximity. He doesn't like that, right? So the more we can run this ball and get them to stay in their lanes to not do crazy Stunts because if you run crazy stunts against outside zone um Ooh buddy It might be a health fall You can get into big trouble You can get into big trouble So That's the real key to this Is we're trying to run outside zone effectively enough to then throw the football To get the time to throw the football and give quin yours the comfort that he can stand big in the pocket And deliver the ball on intermediate and deep routes so You want someone who delivers in your financial life And the biggest financial decision you'll ever make in your life is buying a house Ian just bought a house ask him. That's a big financial decision. There's a lot going to look at it Bask in the magnificence. I bought a house a couple of years ago. Check it out Uh This guy can help you out no matter where you live even if he's not licensed in that state He'll just help you out because he's a cool guy He'll help you compare offers he'll help explain points to you and do all that just because he's a good dude Uh, but if you live in the great state of texas and several other states where he has licensed too many dimensions You need to give this guy a call a three two five five seven one zero nine five Gabe linslow is going to help you make the most important finish financial decision of your life over 20 years in the industry just Hundreds of raves uh both on the inside texas boards and on his google reviews Go read them go check them out. This is a guy you want to entrust that great responsibility to if you're going to big banks to do your mortgage You are doing it wrong for myriad and many reasons that we could run a whole deep dive on explaining But for our purposes just make sure that if this is not your first call make damn sure it's your last call eight three two five five seven one zero nine five By the way with your house. I love the urns that are always in the background That are oh yeah I bought linkedin ancestors Yes, well down upon you as you It's been right six. I bought those in mexico. There's no ashes There will only be the ashes of the georgia bulldogs after we destroy them in atlanta All right, what are we going to talk about next Ian? Well, we talked about how outside zone can set up our passing game The texas passing game was miserable against georgia for the most part Yeah Some of that was sax some of that was pressure some of that was frankly Receivers not getting open or balls not getting delivered where they needed to be Texas has got to make some passing game adjustments against the georgia defense that chose to play quite a bit of man Outside and then rely a lot on their speed of their linebackers to the edge to just cancel out our screen and swing pass game to the running backs so What does texas need to do? Yeah maybe a quick note on that is that Normally you play these big Powerful teams in these big games and sark is always goes in saying hey if we can just spread them around Spread them out and hit them with throws to the tight end and the running back To make those big linebackers chase speed in space. We're going to be cooking and he did that to alabama a couple times He did Michigan to michigan and then he tried to do it to georgia and it went so south I was unbelievable those guys can actually run that they have at linebacker even the big ones so You got to hit them in man If man and if their linebackers are going to be chasing your running backs to the flats You have to throw over the middle You have to hit you have to rub guys open on crossers, which they did some And they didn't always hit it and sometimes they did And they hit a touchdown to jade him blue on an angle route Where he went like he was going to the to the flat and then he changed crossed the face of the linebacker and went over the middle Feel like they need to run that At least five times in this game if they get the same kind of Looks quin also missed an early touchdown throw to blue on a route where in the middle of the field If you'll recall The trick for one that they got it. Yeah. Yeah, so We need to have we can't just do swing passes in space If we're going to throw to our running backs, which we should it needs to be running routes down the field uh text routes angle routes And and then that's when superior athleticism of just any running back against any linebacker matters Because now you're in coverage Whereas if you just throw something out to the sideline George's linebackers run four or five They'll be there and they're not going to miss they're not a and m. They don't miss tapples so That's that's an important thing for this game. Also I'll say this georgia shows certain coverages And you say well that okay. We can't throw over the top because they're in this alignment What you saw what you have seen repeatedly this year is that the teams that do have the personnel and the willingness to throw it deep on georgia georgia's corners don't play the ball great in the air And and they're you're able to hit them Um, so I think there is that potential. I don't think We need to make that a feature of the offense But I do think that there is that potential if you can get a little running game going if you can throw over the middle of the field and make their safety sit and not Flair out I think we have a shot and hitting a a fade to matthew golden or isiah bond if you can recover whatever the hell's going on in his head or a body I said before the last game that fade routes for the way to go And they hit a couple on a and m there were extremely well thrown back when yours. Yes His timing on those for whatever reason is a million times better than when he's trying to drive a post Um Maybe he's not afraid of the backside safety. I don't know what exactly it is But they need to throw more fade routes against georgia That could be the difference in the game as you hit one or two of those and that's like Two fade routes could be 10 points, right? Yeah The the money maker on a touchdown drive and a field goal drive something like that. So Those uh Might as well get to the next one, right? Yeah, well, we talked about Quinn yours and uh pocket composure gonna be big Georgia had seven sacks against texas I really as being applies chapstick. Oh, I got cold here This is still great That's one that's one that's one of the funniest things i've ever seen so yours uh Look I understand that Ian and I can write a million articles and do a million videos And we can explain that the offensive line is not solely responsible for sax Uh, and after the georgia game. I pointed out that there were seven sacks on texas The o-line was responsible or culpable for two of them The other five were on the quarterback. They were on coverage or they were on Runningbacks or tight ends getting beaten um Texas obviously has to protect and block better. That's on the coaches They're gonna have to make some schematic adjustments to not just have predictable slide protections Now we have a cat that wants some chapstick Uh, but also frankly when yours has got to have more pocket composure. He didn't have a lot in that game Uh, when he got harried when he got pressured, but not he's not gonna get hit he's just getting The pockets, you know messy. He was pulling the ball down and dropping his eyes And there's no win out of once that happens. There's no win scenario for texas on offense If you pull the ball down run If you keep the ball up and you keep looking down field and moving over the pocket You still have a chance to throw the ball even as the pocket gets messy when someone springs open Uh, what you can't do is drop your eyes and pull the ball down. That's a guaranteed sack every time So What can we do to help his pocket composure other than run the ball and get that pass rush relieved a little bit Well other and are some other some things in the passing game that we can do to help him out Well sark can always just uh scheme the first guy open as many times as possible. That's a great idea That is Generally been the method that we've helped quin for the last three years um That's maybe not a terrible bet Because sark is going to give this game a very different level of focus and insight than you did the last time they played georgia Um, they've probably practiced some things sark has suggested that they've practiced things That they haven't even put on film yet. Yeah, just with georgia So there's a chance that Quinn will just be able to drop back and throw to his first three and it's like boom sark schemed open Uh, ryan wingo wide open Short of that Uh Run the ball Um Quinn can be better at stepping up in the pocket. He has been better He got better in that game when they put him back in after binging him And uh, you know, then there's always the other thing that they could do if they had to arch arch True. Uh, I think arch will play a role in this game irrespective of of viewers play And uh, I think that's good. I think that's important. Did you hear my idea for the arch play? What? If you get midfield Orthon one Put arch in Make quarterback power. Yeah And then throw a bomb a post route down over the middle for tarshtown I said exactly this last on my everyone gets a trophy podcast last night. Did you really literally those words like 50 yard line midfield fourth and one Exactly that that's hilarious. Yeah, give it a listen. You'll laugh. Uh, yeah, I agree Uh, hey, I'll say this Ian This is important if you examine that Mercedes ben stadium that surface that track and the history of scc title games Even very defensively minded teams that have met in that game Very often it turns into a shootout Uh, that is a fast track surface. You have perfect weather Effectively, right? Yeah, and you've got teams that are sort of letting it all out And you've got defenses that are Freaking out a little bit because they're seeing novel stuff that's been saved or conjured up that week And I think that track and that surface Really supports What sometimes our 18 yard completions becoming 60 yard house calls. So It's definitely going to keep in mind. Is that the field Ohio state got to play Georgia on in the playoff severe years ago when I can't recall actually They're gonna both gonna want to know that now Yeah, because that that game got that got Offensive quickly. Yes Um, yeah, I think that's an interesting question. I wonder but I do know if you look at the scc title games history Um, that was you know, yeah, it was that's exactly right. Ian How about that? Yeah, so it's Good a proof of concept as you could as you could have Yeah, and I I mean people thought that game was going to be played in the low 20s Yeah, and every 42 41. Is that right? I just had it. It was something like that. Yeah. Yeah, both were back went off Huge big plays over and over and also Both of these teams are in the playoff Okay What do you have to lose? Yeah, like let it go man. This is this is for the scc title for Georgia This is their fourth time playing in the game in a row. They're they're they're You know, so that's interesting Uh, but for texas. This is the first time first year in the conference. So let it go man Paul It I was I was making a bracket the other day And this morning to figure out how the committee would do it And the way you want to go is you want to put the premier scc runner up Or the best at large teams in those five and six seed slots Because if you don't you get them up against the number one and the two seed in the second round Oh, yeah And it's really wildly unfair to the number one and the number two seed If you're Oregon and you're watching like You know, it's like squidward in the tower And you've got the winner of like Georgia, Tennessee or something and then you're watching somebody else play Arizona state and boyzy or some garbage So the loser of this game is going to be the five or six seed. I'm pretty sure I Think Notre Dame's got the five lock them. I think so too, but then you're the six seed And then you get probably Alabama in the first round Well, here's the thing they're going to play with those seedings of pen state say pun pen state loses to organ state up to organ They're going to play with those seedings of pen state or texas To play big 10 scc matchups. Does that make sense? So we could be the seven seed Maybe I think they might want to also protect Oregon from just Garbage, here's the truth. Congratulations for the number one seed. Here's Alabama, you know Well, I mean alabama is fallible, but yeah, I get what you're saying. I think that um What this lays bare? frankly Is that I can sit there and say there's only two conferences that matter. There's only two conferences that matter and people are like, okay like don't overdo this And then you see the playoff laid out And you see the acc champion and you see the big 12 champion and they're going to be double digit underdogs And you're like Okay, now it's it's in front of my face and now I can see it and it's so unfair. I mean as you said you've got to reseed um You know once you get into I don't mind having some inclusiveness and allowing Boise state in the playoff, but you've got to reseed once you're in there and not have these automatic Uh automatic conference championship buys this They'll fix it. This one may signed up for for two years. So we'll get two years of this garbage But one of my point my main point is if you lose this game You could get your worst case scenario is a home game against a pin state or alabama And the first and then a second round game against uh like SMU maybe Or Iowa state or Arizona state I'm not going to say Clemson because they suck It's possible We're going to have to see again. I think the committee Is is going it's it's roughly meritocratic, but they're trying to make an entertainment product And they're trying to have matchups That don't Repeat early and also they're trying to have matchups that put the SEC and big 10 against each other or against other teams Uh as much as possible So, you know, they don't want Penn state, indiana Right They're trying to avoid that. I think that's what I did To protect the top steed as I did something like that But you get but either way so it texas gets like pin state or uh Indiana, yeah Again, I think the the power rankings and all you know, you're you've been good on just saying like ignore these shows It's like theater Yeah, power rankings and all that stuff. You're gonna find that they're very malleable Of course, they're trying to play tv matchups and also just appealing match-ups for fans I was I was arguing with someone today. I was like I had Arizona state as the four seed And he's like they're gonna jump six spots over Boise state based on what? And I said well, they're gonna win the big troll championship based on that And they're like that's tens how's the committee gonna justify that? It's like very easily they're gonna say we think that the big troll champion should be higher than Boise state Yeah, and then you're gonna be voting about it on twitter for a day and then it's over You know, and that's the thing is and also the the committee they can explain it any way they want They can they can they're and all of those people I can tell you I've read the committee members the resumes They all have lost column bias. So They don't there's just a number of things we can talk about it's a we have done a deep dive on this and most of the stuff We said it was exactly correct. So Yes, but texas, Georgia outside tone Some passing game adjustments off of that and then making sure we've got some a nice pocket for quinn so he can demonstrate composure throwing the ball and that's how ultimately we're gonna hurt georgia throwing the ball uh I think that's the recipe for success for texas that all said Georgia's played 48 quarters of football this year Ian and they played really good football and about eight of them And we had we experienced three of them. So Who knows what georgia is going to show up? We should probably plan for good georgia Uh, you should always plan for good inside texas. Georgia dismantled the Texas offense last game. How can Texas take back control?
