and I am with you for the next two hours Curved air were one of the bands I liked when I was growing up I was 16, this is 1971 This got to number 4 in the singles chart in the UK They were, as I say, prog rock was one of the things I loved and still do And at that time I was starting off in photography, loved that, still do And I used to take this in a cassette form on my tape recorder into the dark room When I was processing films and things and that sort of just about right 45 minutes and of course when you're in a dark room, I don't know if anybody's ever done that And you sort of visualise everything before you turn the lights out So you put everything where you need it and then you take a good look at it And then you turn the lights out and then you theoretically you know where things are And I can still walk around in the dark because I still sort of do that without a lot of thinking So I can get up and walk around in the night I'm scared to have the people I tell corner I'm going to play a bit of Elvis Presley, which is something I don't do that often for no particular reason But it doesn't always sort of pop up and this is his way down, way on down I can't quite get there, but yes, if anybody was an icon, he was obviously the king of rock and roll And he was born in 1935, died in 1977, he's just 42, that was of course in Graceland in Tennessee, Memphis And he had a troubled life in many ways, but he started off, they reckon he sold about 500 million records worldwide And he's still selling, I'm sure of it, adult contemporary gospel, all sorts of things, pop, country, rockabilly, rhythm and blues He covered the lot really, and he influenced so many people And I've never been a huge fan, I like certain tracks, but I can't say that I'm a devotee But never the mind, we will play one of his tracks and this, as I said, is Elvis Presley, this is way down 50 years of pop Maybe you're getting closer, can't find the lights to go down The frown of I'm gonna give you an e-wem. This is one of those songs that could be very cruel, say. It should never have come out, but yes, no, it's fair enough. It was in the 70s. There was a lot of strange songs came out, and this was a bit strange, and it was a bit annoying. This is a group called Paper Lace. Now, it says their English pop rock. They started off in 1967, but it was in the mid-70s. They had three top 40 hit singles, only one in America. That was the Night Chicago Dye. This is Billy. Don't be a hero. Now, in America, it was considered, because the Vietnam War was on at the time, and it was considered to be about that. I don't think it was. If you listen to the words, I always thought it or took it to be about the American Civil War. Am I right? Am I wrong? I don't know. The Night Chicago Dye was all about Al Capone and gangsters, but they had to have a theme. There you go. Now, have a listen. Tell me what you think. I don't think it's about Vietnam at all. I looked across, and there I saw Billy, waiting to go to enjoy the light. And with the head upon his shoulder, his young and lovely fiancé. Oh, where I stood, I saw she was crying, and threw her tears ahead of date. Billy, don't be a hero. Don't be a fool with your life. ♪ Billy, don't be a hero. I'm back and made to your wife. And a baby started to go. She said, "Keep your pretty head low." Billy, don't be a hero. Come back to me. ♪ The soldier blues were trapped on a huge side, the battle raging all around. The sergeant cried, "We've got to hang on boys. We've got to hold this piece of ground." I need a volunteer to write up and bring us back some extra men. And with his hands up, spend a moment hook up from all the words she said. She said, "Billy, don't be a hero. Don't be a fool with your life." Billy, don't be a hero. I'm back and made to your wife. ♪ And a baby started to go. She said, "Keep your pretty head low." Billy, don't be a hero. Come back to me. ♪ I heard his fiancé got a letter. That told how Billy died that day. The letter said that he was a hero. She should be proud. He died that way. I heard she threw the letter away. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ I bet you had the old hairdrums and everything there. And you're even whistling. You probably never whistled for years.
