Friday edition of the killer bees on ESPN 97.5 and ESPN 92. By Busy Show, Busy Show on a getaway Friday. We'll talk a little bit about Thursday night football yesterday, one of our teams lost. Taylor McCarg, former Rice Al quarterback, call its football analyst, join us at four o'clock ahead of championship weekend, which begins tonight. It begins tonight. DJB anime will not grace us with his presence, but he will be on the phone with us at five o'clock. We get his thoughts on, I wonder how he's handling the buy. I wonder if he's going to Cabo. I'm interested. What does a beat writer do on the buy? - Hopefully get some time away, but I'm sure he's still got deadlines, right? He's still got her right stories. - I don't know. I don't know how that worked. I mean, they're all gone, the team's gone. - Well, but you've had the Aziz story to carry you through most of the week. - But I don't think you're riding anymore this weekend, right? - Probably not. - I wonder if he's going to go out of town. Busy money, we'll hand you some winners and busy money a little bit later on as well. Houston Rockets, they lose, they lose again. Back-to-back games on this road trip, they fall to Golden, I had somebody in the comments saying that they lost to the Warriors G League team 'cause they didn't have Steph Curry. They didn't have Draymond Green. Not the best efforts from the Houston Rockets last night, Blankers. - Nope, nope, didn't like what I saw. Really was pretty disgusted by the end of the game and I felt better about my casheter trashage because of it. I just-- - 50 games? - Yeah, no, I just, I don't think-- - A December victory lap? - I just don't, no, I, well, you guys, you were ready to say that I was wrong for it in December. I, the more that I see the other teams getting better too, I just don't think the Rockets are at top six in the West. - You were flexing pretty hard for at a September 5th loss. - This isn't a December victory lap. - I don't like the way they're playing at all. And for a team that I thought their identity was-- - It's the first time they lost two games in Rawls. - Two games ago, they beat the Thunder. - I don't care, Brian, it's my opinion, not yours. And my opinion is, is that this team is far from a top six team in the West. - Yeah, it is funny though, that you're like, after two games, like, look at me. - I was right on Tuesday. - I was right, I just, I felt better about it because I was so disgusted about-- - You guys can team up on me all day and I don't give a rat to death. - Don't be so sensitive, I'll team it up on you. I think you said you were right though. - I really, I thought that this team was getting it defensively. I thought that this was gonna be their identity. I thought that they were going to give teams fits with the way that they were able to switch and pick up and do the things. And then not only from a defensive perspective, but I thought that they were really kind of buying into the offense and they weren't gonna go so much one-on-one and get better shots. Last night, they just, again, for the second straight game, they couldn't make shots and then they just couldn't figure out that you go to the basket or take the easy shots and they were passing up layups to try and get extra looks at threes and guys were still doing ISOs play after play and it's just, it's frustrating to watch. - I thought their defense was good yesterday. You hold an NBA team to 99 points, that's a pretty good day at the office. Offensively, I agree with everything that you said. And they didn't look like a top six team in the Western Conference yesterday. Not the last two games, like last two games, you're right. They haven't looked like a top six team of the last two games, but three games ago, they weren't beating Oklahoma City. So I think it is like the course of a regular season. Let's see where, I still think they will make the playoffs, but we'll see where it all ends up. Now, email Doka Riptum, I think email Doka's probably on your side, you and email teaming up on us. Here was email Doka after the game, talking about the struggles of the Rockets last night. - Guys, we're sharing the ball. All the things that we've done to get a decent record, we've kind of gone out the window last few games. And so that was a big part of it, obviously. His, you gotta come with some energy, some juice from the start. If you guys really didn't look like they showed up till half, till half for half time. But still, with all I said, you hold somebody at 99, with two guys really hurting us, coming in and Wiggins, 56, they're 99, and you're struggling offensively to get rebounds to hold onto the ball, to play with physicality, aggression, and some assertiveness. And so, one of our softest games since I've been here for sure. - Wow, there's some big words there. - Calling his team soft. - Extremely outspoken in the last two games, which has been fantastic to hear, but he isn't wrong. I mean, Kaminga's been a guy that's been the, basically the poster child for being the laughingstock of who the Warriors fans point all their fingers at, because he's been completely a disappointment. And you make him look like a star, and you're not playing with staff or Dremon. And the other thing that keeps bothering me is as high as you took Jabari Smith, he may be the most disappointing guy that I've seen on this roster, for a guy that you had such high expectations for. I just, I don't see him making strides. I know that, you know, I've said that Jalen and Alpe look like they're making strides defensively, and obviously they got their money. Jabari to me is tough to watch, man. I struggled with, and I don't know if that's specifically one of the guys he was talking about or not, from an energy standpoint we've talked about, when he doesn't get his number called, or guys don't find him, when he feels like he's open, it looks like he goes in the tank, and it just looks like he doesn't have that too. - Who would your rather picks in hindsight? - Well, I mean, I'd have to go back and look at the draft, because there was a three-person draft, and up until the final week, everybody said you were gonna get Bankaro, and then Bankaro went number one. At the time, I thought Jabari was the most talented player coming out. I really did. I thought that he had a higher ceiling. I thought that he had so much that he could continue to develop in terms of a skill set, and it's just offensively, I just haven't seen it. - Yeah, to me, it's about defining who he is and what he is as a role. Like, he's not gonna be one of your top scores. Alpe Shin Goon's gonna be a better score than he is. Jalen's gonna be a better score. Fred Van Vliet's gonna be a better score than him. For me, Jabari needs to settle in to be the guy that gets you 12, 13, and 10. I think he should be a double-digit rebound guy, and then hit 35% of his threes. And if he could be that role, that's very helpful for any winning basketball team. If he's your third or fourth option offensively, probably further, he's probably your fourth option offensively. Like Alpe's a higher option. Fred Van Vliet's a higher option. I would say that Jalen Green's a higher option. I knew it was Mr. Somebody. So like, those are three guys ahead of Jabari already. So if he's your fourth scoring option and he's giving you double figures, we'll go out and get 10 rebounds and hit 35% from three and knock down the open shot. So to me, it's like establishing himself in that role. I'm overall okay with where Jabari is going, but I mean, he's not a guy that I look at for consistent scoring. I look at him for consistent rebounding and knock down the open shot whenever the open shot presents itself. And if there's one player that I was really disappointed in, it had been really disappointed in. It's Jalen Green. His shooting inconsistencies are still there. And it's getting to the point, yes, I've defended Jalen Green and you're still not gonna do anything. You can't trade them this year. I'm getting, I mean, it's to the point where this is just kind of who he is. Like, I understand he's a young player, but he's also in his fourth year in the league. And the shooting has been about what it's been for the entire course of his career. And when you look at the rockets and you're trying to like establish, well, what's wrong with the rockets? Like where, and I don't think anything's wrong with them, quite frankly, like if you would have told me before the year that the rockets are 15 and 8, 23 games into the year and they're tied for second place in the Western Conference, I would gladly take that. It's more, how can they get better? Like, how could they take it from being like this, you know, great start to then making the postseason or then once they get to the postseason, how could they be a threat in the playoffs? I think defensively they're fine. What is the one area they can step up? To me, it's scoring. They have a very mediocre offense. I think it was 15th in the league going into yesterday's game. So for them in my mind to take that next level, what is it gonna take? To me, it's more offensive firepower. I think it's fair to be like, okay, well, let's see what Jalen Green looks like in year two. And you need more than 23 games. Let's see what it looks like in, you know, 50 games. You can't trade on this year anyways. So that would be the one area that I point to where the rockets really have to elevate their game if they want to take that next step yet again. I think they have to be a better offensive team. Yeah, I think it starts there. I think there are tweaks to the defensive. We talked about it in the Sacramento game. Just the fact that you went out and you got a Steven Adams, you have some big bodies that you can rotate through if you're playing a team that has a big guy or a frontline that might be more physical and might be, you know, giving you some problems. But I think it all does start on the offensive, 'cause I think that, you know, drafting Reed Shepard, people thought, well, the outside shooting woes are gonna be fixed. It's not that simple. And he's not that ready to contribute at that level as we've seen. And I think that everybody just has, you know, you have to get what you can from everybody from an outside shooting perspective. And that's what's saying, I'm in Thompson's three point shots, looks better than it did a year ago, but that doesn't mean that he's there either. Everybody has to continue to get better, but they rely heavily on that outside shot and that three ball. And when it's not falling, they don't realize you've got to switch gears. You can still attack the basket. You've got athletic guys that can finish and you can get easy buckets and get to the free throw line to stay in ball games. And I just don't think that that mentality has set in yet. - I don't know where they fell to after yesterday's game. I can't imagine it'd be very far, 'cause only give up 99 points. You give up under 100 points in the NBA. That's pretty good. I mean, they've had a top two, top three defense really throughout the year. To me, it's on the offensive side. And I think it's an easy fix. I think it's improve your best perimeter score. Figure out a way to do that. And again, this is an imminent, but if you can bring in a top 10 score in the NBA that's consistent, that can play the two probably, I think this team takes that next step up. Whatever that next step up is. Like for me, it'd probably be making a deeper, deep-ish run in the playoffs for you. It sounds like making the playoffs would be the next step for them. There were some things that I did like. Did y'all notice the screeching noise, by the way? Did you catch it? - The audio was awful. - Was that just, that wasn't just my TV? Okay, good. - The audio was bad. And at one point, I think it dropped out. - I noticed for me, I don't know if this is the case for everybody else, but from like the start of the second quarter to about the seven-minute mark of the second quarter, it was a high-pitched screeching noise for the entire like five and a half minutes of play. - Meast, it started with the audio basically almost dropping out. Like it was too like a whisper. You could barely hear it. And then it was kind of like all over the place. There was like some kind, there was interference, but it was bad. - Yeah, I wonder what that was like for everybody else. I was pleased with a Mint Thompson's bounce-back game. I thought that he played, I don't want to put this like very specific term and say that a Mint Thompson played the worst game. He's played all year against the Kings, but I thought he had played poorly. Like he's been playing really well for a stretch of time now. And then the Sacramento games like where did, where did that a Mint Thompson come from? I haven't seen that guy in a while. And we talked about it on Wednesday too, where Eme Adoka was so ticked off and a Mint Thompson running a set incorrectly that he called a timeout in the middle of the play and benched a Mint Thompson. So he didn't play well. And then a Mint Thompson yesterday, I thought played really well. 14 points, eight rebounds. I'm not a huge plus-minus guy, but a Mint Thompson was one of the few players that had a positive plus-minus, which does beg the question though. In a game where a Mint Thompson's playing much better, and in a game where Jaylen Green shot is off, in a game where Fred Van Vliet shot is off, in a game where Dylan Brooks's three-point shot is off, why isn't Mint Thompson only playing 22 minutes? Especially with Tari Easton not playing because he has a concussion, which I don't know where he's to stay in that. I don't need it. But the 22 minutes for a Mint Thompson in a game where you're not getting much offense from anybody, and he's playing well, I thought he should have played more than 22 minutes. I couldn't agree more simply because of the fact that we just got done talking about two wing players that were dominant and scoring for the Warriors as well with Wiggins and Kaminga, and he's a guy that can guard multiple positions and give guys fits both off the ball and when they have the ball, and you would think that there was more minutes for him to be played. I don't, from night to night, I don't understand that because you would think that whether you're doing that and you look at the player profiles and the scouting from team to team and say, "Hey, here's the team he matches up really well with with a lot of their wings and their younger guys, even Moody and some of the other guys." Yeah, 22 minutes isn't enough for me either with a Mint Thompson. Yeah, Reid was a little bit better. Like he got some, it shouldn't say extended minutes, he only played 13 minutes. Up at scored seven points. Do you think Ken Whitmore should be up? I think, you know, you just mentioned that about a man getting more minutes. Last night's the kind of game where he can potentially give you some juice offensively. Now I'm never gonna say he's gonna give you juice defensively 'cause I think he doesn't want to play defense a whole lot. But I think offensively he brings so much to the table in terms of strength, athleticism, jumping ability, he can make a shot. That when you're kind of flat in a game like last night you can throw him in and you'll know real quick. If he gets, you know, if he gets in the rhythm quickly he can give you some easy baskets and he can be a difference maker in terms of changing momentum if he's not sitting back down. But I thought last night was a game that he truly could have played in and possibly could have made contributions. With no Tari, I'm a little surprised they didn't call him up but I don't think he may likes Ken Whitmore a whole lot. Like he went to the, he's been to the G-Link. Like he's been to the G-Link. Even when he's been up, he's been, he's been getting DNP coaches decisions. He was getting a few minutes early in the year but even then was behind Reed Shepard in the rotation. I don't think he may like to, Ken Whitmore. - I don't think you're wrong. And I think that that's one of those where at a certain point, and Ken wasn't drafted as high and therefore had the kind of status coming in that a Jalen did when he may went above and beyond several times to kind of connect with Jalen and work with him. I think at a certain point, he may as one of those guys that said, hey, basically says, I've spelled it out for you. I've told you why you're not playing used like you mentioned. We've sent you down to work on those kind of things. There's also been a couple of mental blocks where because things aren't going your way, you've kind of checked out on us a few times. At a certain point, if you're not going to show me an improvement in your attitude, which should be no problem, and the way that we're asking you to play, then I don't admit it's for you. - Yeah, Texas says, why doesn't Ken play? - I think it's that. I think that he's kind of single-minded offensively, and then I don't think he really cares much about the defensive side of the ball. Look, and he may have sent him down multiple times, and even when he's up, doesn't play on me. He also asks texture, send Jabari to the G-Link. That's being a bit rash. Like Jabari Smith is an NBA rotation player. Is he a starting four? I think the jury's still out on that. I think he has a pretty unique skill set 'cause I do think he is capable of being a 12, 13, 14-point game, a guy, a knight, a guy, and then also give you 10 rebounds. I think he's capable of shooting up to 40% from three. Now, shot selection annoys me at times. Like the transition three, Jabari, you're not a transition three guy. You're a catch and shoot guy. You're not really an off the dribble guy, right, frankly, either. You need to be more catch and shoot. I don't mind if he has a mismatch to rise and fire in the mid-range game, but Jabari Smith's not a G-leader. That's ridiculous. - No, but I was thinking about last night, Reed. I wouldn't mind seeing Reed get down to the G-League a little bit just to get some extended run, and just kind of work on his game a little bit, get his rhythm back a little bit, 'cause I think as a young player that's played as much as he's played when he played even at Kentucky, coming into this situation, it's gotta be tough where he doesn't know if he's gonna get minutes, when he's gonna get minutes, and then how long he's gonna be on the floor to where, if he's gonna play that sporadically, I would like to see him get some run in the G-League. - Yeah, I could go either way with that. Like I can understand where you're coming from, confidence, run a play, like all of that. I'll also understand the other side of it, where it's like, hey, you're gonna play 15 minutes a night, you're gonna do it against the best competition, and you're going to slowly figure it out. So I could go either way on that. Brain and T, I was getting that noise too, and then texture, I just got done telling my son, the rocket's looking pretty good. I think we'll go see a game this year, and then last night happened. Yeah, Bran, I'm footin' mouth, it definitely happened. All right, lots to get to, Taylor McHarg will be joining us at four. BZ money at 5.30, DJB anime, later on in the program as well. But Aziz, just kidding, just kidding, gotcha. How 'bout the game last night in the NFL? Lions, Packers, what about the Cajonas on Dan Campbell? Would you agree with that decision on fourth down? 713-780-ESP and the HRNP listener line. We're on the Twitch, Twitch.tv/ESP and 97-5. We're on YouTube and ESPN Houston, Twitter, ESPN 975. Blankers at Pac-Man Joel. Brian, it's sacked by BMAC. I'm a Jeremy Branham. We are collectively the B's on ESPN 97-5 and ESPN 92-5. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) Live in the Peritex Community Bank Studios, it's the Killer B's. Now back to Joel and Jeremy. - Text or sayin' to one of the Texans players come together and make Azizal Shire, the Walter May fan of the year. That'd be funny. Peaches their representative. I still have JAG fans in all of my Twitter comments. They're so mad at me. They're do-valling all up on my social media. - All right, seven, one, three, seven, eight, zero, ESPN. You still feel, you feel okay today, Blankers up to the game yesterday? - The Packers game. - I expected them to lose. - But are you feelin' okay? - Yeah, I'm fine. - All right. - I mean, look, I think you guys are right. At the end of the day, they're pretty, I think they're going to get into the playoffs. But I mean, that basically solidified, they're not gonna win the division. And I think that as good a young team as they are, they're a half step or more below the lines. - No, I think it's been a good year for the Packers, quite frankly. And look, they were in that game yesterday. It was tie game, late, under a minute, left to play. The storyline, really, from the game yesterday is turned into Dan Campbell. And Dan Campbell's decision to go for it, fourth down, could it kick the field goal line? The Packers have zero timeouts remaining. Instead, he elects to go for the fourth and less than a yard. Jared Goff falls down if it were the college rules. They would have turned it over on downs. Montgomery gets a couple of yards there. They keep the drive alive. And then two plays later, they're kicking the field goal, winning the game. What did you make that of the decision of Dan Campbell going for it? - As the opponent, I was ecstatic. I thought that the game was over and the fact that he was gonna go for it. And since he had missed in his own territory, fourth down, go for it earlier, I thought, wow, he's actually giving them a chance to avoid even getting the kick off. And I mean, I went, the minute that I saw, off starting to go down, I'm like, oh my God, they may actually screw this thing up. And then they inevitably ended up getting the hand off anyway and Gibbs got the first down. But I just couldn't believe that. I mean, that essentially, I think, wraps the game up for you right there. And you've got almost guaranteed points. You take them right there because you don't want the risk of going overtime even if you're at home. - Jared, Jordan loves also not Peyton Manning. You know, like, I get it more if it's Peyton Manning, if it's Tom Brady, if it's Pat Mahomes. And I think Jordan, I like Jordan Lovemore new. I think Jordan Love is easily a top 10 quarterback, but I'm not really fearing Jordan Love on a 41 second drive with zero timeouts remaining of beating me. Like, maybe he gets you to fill a goal range and has an opportunity to tie, but I'm not worried about losing the game. - Plus your defense is good. - Yeah, I mean, they gave a 31 point yesterday, but yes, I mean, and they had a bunch of injuries. - Right, that's just a good point. Like they were down three defensive linemen. It seems to be like the gut feel of Dan Campbell that Mahomes, like my guys are gassed. We're on a short, we're not, I guess not short week, but we're gassed. It's a long season where I don't trust my defense. They'd already given up, well, I think three scoring drives about 70 yards or more. He didn't trust defense in that moment. I, it's definitely not by the books. I don't even know if they popped up the analytics in that moment. I can't imagine it would be go for it, but I understood if he has a feel for his team that we can't withstand this, then let's end the game right here. - I personally hate the game theory. I think the game theory is moronic, quite frankly. I like the attitude. And I think it's the attitude that the Lions feed off of quite frankly, where it's, we're just going to beat you. We don't care about, you know, the analytics. We don't care about the game theory. We don't care about your game plan. And they trust their offensive line. I think the offensive line's actually the superstar of their team. Yes, Jared Goss playing at a very high level. Jamir Gibbs is obviously very, very good. They don't have Aiden Hutchinson anymore. Ben Johnson, their offensive coordinator. But I think the superstar of their team is that offensive line. So it's, we're going to have this attitude that we're going to play bully ball and we're going to beat you whenever we want to. We're going to take your will whenever we choose. So I think it's that attitude that the Lions thrive off of. I think the game theory's stupid, quite frankly. I can't believe that he did it. There's no chance that I ever do it. But I do think that the Lions and the 53 guys on that team feed off of that attitude and a decision like that just throws gas on the fire for the presence of that attitude. He owns that locker room. They all will follow him and run through a wall for him because it started with the press conference where everybody thought it was hyper corny about biting kneecaps off. But he's lived it every day. This is who he is. And unlike Staley when he was head coach of the Chargers and he was going for it on every opportunity to go for it on fourth down and putting his team in some real predicaments missing and really kind of digging a hole that the team couldn't get out of a lot of times. Dan Campbell, he gave it, he did it in the playoffs in a massive game against the Niners last year. And Goff said after the game, we support it because that's who he is. That's who he's been the entire time. And so we're going to do what he wants us to do and we'll ride with it. And they did it again last night because of the fact that he has that entire locker room knowing exactly what he believes in, what his mindset is and how he's going to attack. And so he's doing exactly what he's supposed to do, coaching that team that way. - Here is Dan Campbell yesterday. He was asked after the game, the decision to go for it. Fourth in one, 40 seconds left deep into Packer territory. - I knew how I wanted to play this game. The team knew it and everything in me told me that let's finish this and so we did. - There you go. We wanted to finish it with our offensive line and we did. Kugle says that Campbell's head is getting really big. Really big, his luck's going to run out once the playoffs begin. I do think it's a fine line. I do think that Dan Campbell's psychotic aggression is a very fine line. I don't think that he's that far away from probably going too far. Look, if they don't get the fourth down yesterday and they turn it over on downs and Jordan Love leads him on a 40 yard drive to get into field goal range and the Packers win, Dan Campbell is getting crushed today. - Oh no doubt. - Crushed today. I mean, he already had people on Snapchat last year that docked him. - I mean, true. - That's my move. - But that Niners game, literally you still, you had people in the fan base that as much as the team understood it, the team supported it, the team went with the decisions that he made. The fan base wasn't so giddy about it because a lot of the fans thought it cost them a chance to go to the Super Bowl. And so it is who he is and he's going to live with it whether it works or not, but you're right. And if they don't get that last night and if he, if golf literally falls down and something happens to that handoff, boy, it's a, it's a totally, it'd be a really interesting scenario this morning in Detroit. - I mean, he would just be getting blasted. Like, I mean, you'd be crushed. What is he doing? His aggression's gone too far. He needs to be more analytical. I mean, I think that would be the narrative. But yes, I mean, that was a very fine line between brilliance into the attitude versus ignorance into what game theory and normal game theory has been pretty much ever forever in NFL history, quite frankly. Something else from that game that I thought was, I think that the Lions do, like you said, like they're going to run away with the NFC North. There's no doubt about that. King of Twitch on the, on Twitch.tv/use-be-nice-7-5. He says Dan Campbell over to Mico Ryan's. Fair, fair to say that. - Boy, I mean, it's hard to argue with the fact that he's had more success. So yeah, I think you would say Dan Campbell over to Mico Ryan's at this point. - Yeah, I mean, resume, no doubt. Dan Campbell has got a better resume than D'Amico Ryan's at this point. I'm not all, I'm not a huge believer in the resume. Like, I think they're two different arguments. Like, there's one thing who's had the better resume, who's had the better career. And then it's the second one. Who would you rather have lead your team? I probably lean Dan Campbell. - I would lead Dan Campbell too. I mean, look, we give D'Amico credit for taking over team that won four or seven games in two years. Dan Campbell took over Alliance franchise that hadn't done anything in decades. And he got them to this point. They've obviously made some really good draft picks with Jamir Gibbs and Snape Peele and a few others. But look, this is not like it's a superstar-laden team. I mean, Jared Goff is their quarterback. There's not a lot of household names on defense, especially now that Aidan Hutchison's out. This is a team like we give D'Amico credit for winning through leadership, winning through culture. Dan Campbell's doing the same thing and he's doing it at a higher level. - I think also of the guys, I mean, you know, we start talking about what D'Amico has been, you know, in the crosshairs for a little bit too. I don't think there's ever a question that Dan Campbell's not gonna call someone out, not probably not publicly, but I'm sure that whatever it comes down to, whether it's a coach or a player, he's not afraid to call anybody into his office. He's not afraid to, you know, to jump on anybody. And even if he has to do it, you know, in somewhat of a more out, you know, out in the open situation, he seems like he attacks everything head on. - You don't think D'Amico does that? - I question sometimes, again, in terms of the discipline stuff with this team. I question if he is that guy. I mean, eventually he said, you know, he and Aziz were gonna sit down in this situation, but you know, with the offensive line, with a lot of things, with the penalties, with a lot, I just sometimes I wonder internally how much of the actual, hey, calling you out on the carpet, sitting you down and we gotta talk about this. This has gotta change kind of stuff. I think D'Amico's a really good leader. I think that I would believe that Campbell would be more head on aggressive with it than D'Amico is. - I wouldn't argue that last part. I do think Campbell seems to be more head on, but when players talk about D'Amico, they say he's not afraid of confrontation, that he'll call you out on it. And like, you don't think the Texans, when they watch film and the offensive line, make some mistakes, they're not bringing that up? - I hope they are. I mean, I just think that when we were told that a lot of things were gonna be cleaned up, they didn't seem to get cleaned up right away. I think discipline has been an issue with this team in a lot of ways to where I don't think it would be the same way under a guy like Dan Campbell. - Yeah, I think that they show them their mistakes. Like, I think that they address their mistakes. - I think you have to be watching game film. - Right, yeah, but I mean, that kind of contradicts to what you said. Like, he didn't have that hard conversation with players and stuff like that. - Like, even for a tonsil. A tonsil when he had all the penalties in the one game, I don't think that's one where I'm gonna let the line coach and I'm gonna let the guys watch film and I'm gonna let him work it out. That's a conversation where I don't care what he says to the media. We're gonna have a conversation. I'm gonna call him into my office. I'm gonna say, "Hey, look, things gotta change. "You gotta be better and we have to be better." And even from the standpoint of the communication between all the members of the offensive line, I think those are conversations that go deeper than just the position coach. - I think it's a reach saying he doesn't have them though. Like, we have zero evidence to that. - I don't know either way. - Yeah, I mean, that's kind of the point. And then also, if you wanna mention like the Laramie tonsil thing specifically, Laramie tonsil, after that game where he had tons of penalties, went on a long stretch. He had like one over a series of like four or five games. - I think it, I don't know if it happened overnight, but right away he was deflecting too. And, you know, it's like from the Azee, even from the Azee standpoint of the Chicago game to the Jacksonville game, I think that I would have wanted more conversations to let players know these kind of things can't happen. Those are the kind of things where you can't let it spill out into throwing punches and sideline brawls, no matter what the call on the field is, because it can cost your team when he's not out there. And it happened twice in a game this year to where, again, you're right, I don't know, but if we're comparing the two guys, and which guy I think would give me the tendencies to attack it head-on quicker and more aggressively, I'd say Campbell. - Yeah, but just in your definition of D'Amico, I think there were some inaccuracies there. Like when Azee's out, Shire, - Okay. - Well, it's, I'm saying we don't know. I'm saying we really have no idea, other than when the players talk about it, they say that D'Amico does kind of call them out. - Whenever Azee's out, Shire, punch for Sean Johnson in the face earlier this year, you don't think D'Amico had a conversation with him? - I don't know, I hope so. But I would think that it'll- - What is your guess? - My guess is, I hope he did. I can't say definitively that I think he did. - That's not an answer. - I don't care what you think it is. - But what do you think happened? Do you think D'Amico told Azee's not to punch people on the sidelines, or do you think he just did not talk to him at all about it? - I think he probably, I would hope he said something to him that said that you don't do that anymore. But I don't, of the two guys too, I would think that Campbell would be the guy that would get on it right away. D'Amico, based on just a lot of the quotes and the things that I've seen, again, I don't know, I don't get the feeling that he's that head-on guy that handles it that aggressively that quickly. - Like quotes that D'Amico said or his players have said? - Just the way the media asked them about those question situations, we'll take care of it, we'll handle it. It'll be in practice, film, practice, whatever. Even with those kind of things. It just doesn't give me the same kind of confidence that he's going to go in there and sit down and talk to him. And I also believe that when a situation like that happens, if you're adamant about it and you really emphasize it enough, I would think that it wouldn't happen again in the same season. - Are you wanting him to confront the players through the media? - No, I want him to confront the players aggressively behind the scenes. - I don't think what they say into the press conference carries any weight. And D'Amico especially super guarded, like D'Amico is not going to give away any answers. And like when D'Amico came out in defense of Aziz al-Shire, it's like the first time he's ever like thrown anybody under the buzz on an opposing team. - I mean, it's kind of my point though. Like if we don't want him to confront through the media, then we have to assume that they're doing it behind doors. So D'Amico is saying what we expect him to say at that point. - And listening to the Texans players, I don't think there is an issue with D'Amico confronting players about things he's unhappy with. You can point to the penalties and be like, yeah, that's unacceptable, I would agree. Like they have been one of the most highly penalized teams in each of the last two years. And then versus the two of them, Dan Campbell versus D'Amico, I would lean to your side of that too, with Dan over a cap. All right, 713-780-ESP, would you take Dan Gambour or D'Amico Ryan's fun little conversation there? Also, who do we blame for the Tank Disappearing Act? It ain't that. I don't know which one of you put this in the rundown. But we'll discuss next. It is the B's on ESPN 97-5 and ESPN 92-5. - Hey, folks, we go to the break. A word from a good friend, Doc Linville right here in the Med Center, doing a lot of great things in Houston for Houstonians and that could be anything with the holidays coming up. If you wanna get a special gift for your significant other, he does spot treatments, he does Botox, he does a ton of plastic surgery. But the one thing that I have personal experience with is he does a ton of things to get your hair back. From PRP treatments that can restore the hair you still have on your head, to the fact that he can go flat out with a neograph procedure and get you here where you don't have it currently and have you feeling great and looking great again and giving you self-confidence in the process. Right now, because you listen to us and you might be interested in what he could do for you, you can get a free consultation right before the holidays, it's perfect. With Doc and his staff, just by going to 975hair.com, you go to 975hair.com, set up an appointment. It's all free. Off the street, people are paying $150. You don't pay a single thing. You go in, they explain to you how they can help. They show you pictures. They walk you through the processes and then you can ask questions and you do Q&A so that you can see if you have all the information you need to make a decision. At the end of the day, there's nothing to sign for. There's no money out of pocket. There's no commitment. Just you getting all the information you could possibly have to see if it might be a decision you'd be willing to make because Doc has said he's not trying to get rich off of this thing. He's trying to get people to realize there is an alternative when you start losing your hair and you can get it back. It's the same color. It grows the same direction 'cause it's your hair. Genetically, you never lose the hair on the sides in the back of your head. That's where he takes the hair that he needs to get you where you need to go. Tell him I said you buy it 'cause he is literally the best in the business, in my opinion, but get that free consultation. Go to 975hair.com. (upbeat music) Now back to The Killer B's. - On ESPN 97.5 and 92.5. - Live from the Verintex Community Bank Studios, here's Joel Blanken, Jeremy Branham. - Now get into the Tank Dail conversation a little bit. I'll admit I was triggered whenever I saw this. The Tank Dail is one of my Beatles. I protect Tank Dail. Textor's saying to me, "It goes too, buddy, buddy." Yeah, I can see why people think that. I don't know what he's like behind closed doors. He does kind of celebrate like a player on the sidelines when good things happen. He does run after his defenders whenever they get like a pick six and he's streaking up the sideline. To each their own, I don't think it's a bad thing. Did I say it was a bad thing? - I know, but you're kind of leading in the direction. - Did I say it was a bad thing? You're bringing it up as if it's something-- - Well, he said it's buddy buddy. I think it's a good example of being buddy buddy. - Okay, fair. - And being certainly emotional. I mean, Bill Belichick's not running up down the sidelines a whole lot. I have seen people, I have seen the Discord say that they don't love DeMico, Ryan, sideline antics and he's a little bit too excitable. I think it's more he's a young coach. - Those are unfund people. - Yeah, I also don't have a problem with it. Just telling you that I've seen that Discord. Another texture, Blankers would be terrible and the witness stand would make a great politician don't want to answer. Dude won't answer a yes or no question. I understand what Blankers is saying. I think DeMico is more of a bro than a boss. That's just hard to know. - Yeah, I just-- - That's a pure guess work. - It is. - My bigger thing is that I'm not trying to kabosh anything that DeMico has done. And I like DeMico, Ryan's. And I think he is the perfect coach for this team. I just think we were comparing the two guys. And I also think that this year, to me, there's been a lot of discipline type matters that seem to be apparent to me that have gotten under my skin a little bit. So it starts with the penalties and it goes further than that. - Yeah, I mean, I don't like the penalties either. That's too many, even for a team that wants to be aggressive. And I understand that they might be top 10 in penalties whenever you play with such an aggressive style. But maybe don't be top three. Texture, DeMico is so calm. I like some emotions. See, I think we just talked about, he's running up the sideline showing a moment. I don't think he lacks emotion on the sideline and with his team. I think he lacks emotion behind a microphone in front of the press, which I think is calculated. - Yeah, and again, I will preface it by saying, I don't know how he is behind the scenes. But you and I were talking about this as it related to Steve Kerr and how it relates to coaches. Some coaches, no matter how the job that they have and the way that they go about their coaching day to day and day out, they don't like confrontations. Matter of fact, they don't want to do it. So they use the media, they use other means, they use assistant coaches 'cause that's not what they want to do. And others are different that way. It just seems like Campbell's one of those guys that grabs the bull by the horns and everything in life. And he kind of doesn't hide it. - Yeah, my contention's more, not that I disagree with that point of it, my contingent's more that DeMico's not confrontational and that he's not willing to do that. And I've heard players say the opposite, not that he's greater than Campbell, 'cause I don't think that. Another texture, most penalized team in the league, Branham for the last two years, stopped dying on that DeMico, Ryan's Hill. - Well, they're third this year, they were fourth last year. And I answered Dan Campbell. So like, what hill am I dying on? I said Campbell, not DeMico. All right, 713-780-ESP. And who do we blame for the Tank Dell disappearing act this season? This is not my topic. Obviously, I was triggered whenever I read this, quite frankly, was this you blank? Was this you, Brian? Who put this in here? - Oh, that's me. - All right, lay it on me. Why do you think that it's a disappearing act? - Well, because the numbers back it up. I mean, when you look at what Tank Dell did versus, and I'll start this from the very beginning and say, I don't think he's necessarily a worse player. I think the offense changes. Maybe he's working back from the leg injury, obviously getting shot over the offseason, having more competition with Stefan Diggs for the first half of the season, and things changed from year to year. But when you look at the numbers, his yards per game's down, his catches per game's down, and he's got fewer targets this year through 12 games than he did last year through playing 10 games, 'cause obviously he missed the New Orleans game. Well, it was 11, but he only played nine snaps in the Denver game where he broke his leg. In New Orleans, he was concussed and missed that game. So he really only played 10 games, and yet he had more targets in those 10 than he's got right now through 12. And like I said, the yards are down, the receptions are down per game, and he's not really breaking off for the big games. He had the 100-yard game against the Jets with no digs, with no Nico Collins. Last year, and again, 10 games played at three. So we're just not seeing the explosion. We're not seeing the same usage. I'm not saying he's the worst player at all. I'm just curious what-- - Call it a disappearing act. - Yeah, because the usage has gone down. That's a disappearing act. I don't think he's the worst player, but he's not being used in the same way or at the same level. - Okay, a lot to defend here. First off, the injuries. I don't think that the injuries have anything to do with what is happening to Tank Dell this year. And you're speaking to this like a true stat head, by the way. When you watch Tank Dell running up and down the field, do you think he's injured? Do you think he's lesser than who he was last year? - I was pointing out all the things that could change from year to year that could have caused or led to part of this, but I wasn't seeing those. - Right, but I'm trying to go one by one to decide like how much stock we're putting into that. If we believe that Tank Dell has taken a step back, do you think from a health perspective, he's lesser than or from an athlete perspective, he's lesser than his rookie? - No. - Okay, so I don't think that the injuries come into play at all here. - I don't need it. - Yeah, 'cause like the fibula injury, I've had that. I know that I'm a great athlete. I can recover off of those more than most people, but the fibula is not that, like that's not even a weight-bearing bone. Like that's a crack in a bone, you have to wait for it to heal and then you're good to go. The shooting, like hate that it happened, like that was like in the abdomen, like that's not really gonna affect your athleticism once you recover from like the sensitivity of it. - Was it the abdomen? - I thought it was. - That's the upper leg. - Yeah, I thought it was a leg issue. - I thought it was in the abdomen. - I thought it was like thigh, like upper leg. - Yeah, I thought it grazed or somehow did something to a leg. - Oh, it was a leg, yeah, you're right. - No, you're right, I thought it was the abdomen. But we don't think he's slower or anything, even with the shooting to the leg, my bad on that. Okay, the stats, I mean, yeah, you can point to the stats and be like the stats aren't what they were a year ago. Now I don't think that the divide is nearly as great as you let on there, Brian. Certainly not to the point where it's a disappearing act. The, and you bring up a good point about 10 games, it was really like, it was 11 games, but really 10. Last year he played in 11 games, this year he's played in 12. Last year in 11 games, he was targeted 75 times, this year he's been targeted 72 times. It's a difference of three, it's a difference of three. It catches. - Yeah, but two less games. - I mean, it's one less game. He also got injured from a game this year too. - You can't hit nine plays in that game where he broke his leg, he didn't really play in the game. - I'm pretty sure that happened right before the end of the half last year. - It was nine offense, I mean, I pulled up his stat pages, he had nine offensive snaps. - He got injured right before halftime. Nonetheless, whatever, 75 targets last year, 72 targets this year, and one less game, if you want to make it one and a half less game cool, he's also been injured in a game this year, but whatever. 709 yards last year, 543 this year. Not a crazy divide, especially. Okay, but look at the Texans offense as a whole. Like the Texans offense as a whole is down. So like it is-- - He's seen me arguing that, I think he's actually diminished. I don't think he's diminished. - You said a disappearing act, how am I not supposed to think he's diminished? - Listen to what I'm saying though, I'm saying that his production has disappeared. That's diminished. I'm not saying he's a lesser player. - What? - Well, that's why I was asking the question why has it gone down? - I'm getting there. - But also like that's not that big of a difference. - What are you on to the game? - That's not, no, that's not a huge difference when you look at the totality of the Houston Texans. - How is that a big thing? - Let me finish the sentence. Look at the totality of the Houston Texans offense. What is the difference last year between the Houston Texans offense of this year? What's the difference there in yards per game? Secondly, look at opportunity. Last year, Tank Dell was the number two option for the Houston Texans for every game that Nico Collins played. Every game Nico Collins played, Tank Dell was the number two option. Nico Collins was also hurt a few games last year where he was the top option in two games. How many games this year has Tank Dell been the top three option because he's behind Nico. He was behind Stephon Diggs and Stephon Diggs was here and he's behind Joe Mixon. If you're Bobby Slowick and your game's landing-- - He was standing in the game though, he's not. - I'm talking about from a play-- - No one said receiving game. Like when your Bobby Slowick-- - Well that was-- - Let me finish Brian. When you're looking at it from an offensive play calling perspective and you're trying to draw up a game plan on how to beat the defense, you have top options that you wanna use to beat the defense. Whenever Bobby Slowick is game planning against opponents this year, he's got Nico Collins that he needs to feed over Tank Dell. He's got Stephon Diggs early in the year that he needs to feed over Tank Dell and he has Joe Mixon that he's gonna feed over Tank Dell even if he's running the ball. Because if you're running the ball, what are you not doing? You're not passing it. So whenever you have the options that Bobby Slowick has this year and Tank Dell for a lot of games hasn't been a top three option. Sometimes he's been a top three option where he hadn't been a top two option, but last year he had far more opportunity being the guy or the bridesmaid versus this year. If you go look at every game they've played this year, they went to play the Colts, they were fully healthy. The first game of the year, the Colts. Tank Dell was your fourth option that week. Same thing against Chicago. He was your fourth option that week. Joe Mixon got hurt in that game. So he was your third option after that. When Stephon Diggs got hurt, I believe Joe Mixon was back right around that same time. So he was your third option. Whenever Nico Collins came back, he drops down the importance of the offense. So this is more about opportunity than it is anything else. - See, and I know you guys are both passionate on either side of this. I'm just gonna interject to say that the offense isn't as great as it was a year ago overall in terms of the numbers are down. We know that they've struggled. We know the offensive line has struggled. The offensive line isn't as good. We've talked about how it affects all the elements. Jeremy's last points were what I was going all along, which is when you add a Stephon Diggs and you add a Joe Mixon and now Joe Mixon is not only in the running game, but he's also in the passing game and you have more mouths to feed and you're trying to make sure we've talked about how all three receivers numbers are probably gonna go down at the start of the year because there's a lot more weapons to use and a ball to go around. But I think those are the big elements to me where you could see a drop off. CJ hasn't been as good as he was a year ago either and factor that in as well. But I think that all those things factor into why, not just tank, but a lot of guys aren't, if they were put in the same situation, aren't gonna have the same numbers that they had the year previous. - And I do, the answer to the question I agree is because the reps or not the reps, but the targets and the need in the offense is diminished because of the added, the additions of Mixon and Diggs, but at the same time, Mixon's missed three games. Nico missed five games. I believe Diggs now has missed what, four games? - But they weren't all at the same time. They've been staggered, so where he was never the second most offensive player. - Diggs was healthy when Nico went out in that season. - So then instead of tank being elevated to one, Diggs was elevated. - He's been like the third option pretty much all year. And like when they've all been healthy, he's been the fourth option, which last year he was never worse than the second option. Ever. - How many games have they actually been all healthy though? Like two? - We've done that burden of proof. - Like we're falling on you? - I'm asking, I mean game one against the Colts, they're all healthy. - Okay, so he's the fourth option goes out. - Let's pull up the box scores. Pull up the box, actually let's do this on the other side. 713780ESP it. Where are you staying on this hive? What do you think about the disappearing act of tank dov? You believe that it's a disappearing act. 713780ESP it's the bees on ESPN 97.5 and ESPN 97.25. (upbeat music) - Broadcasting live for the Veritex. Community Bank Studios, it's the killer bees with Joel Blanket, Jeremy Branham. - On ESPN 97.5 and 92.5. - Few texts on this, where are you at with the tank? I hope tank is heard if not the downfalls, even more worrisome than other member of the hive. 100% the line fault, which I think that's a kind of the overall problem of the offense. When it goes out, tank did not step up to be the guy. CJ Stratton has been worse this year. Periods miss several big throws to delve this year. Other text on this, could the offense be diminished because of tank's play? Just last game, a tank was open for a long touchdown, but the ball was under thrown. I'm not gonna put that one on Stroud. That was a 70 yard throw in the air. But yes, he got open. That's also the other part of it. And Brian's not saying this. Like you put on the film, Tank Dells there. Tank Dells is getting open. There's been two or three times where Tank Dells has been wide open on deep balls that last year they were cashing in on, and this year they aren't. I think those plays are generally pretty volatile. I think they-- - Wasn't there a game, was it the very first Colts game of the year where he broke open, like deep-- - Been several. - Yeah, but when there was a play where it just grazed off his fingertips and Stroud missed him. - And like the difference in the yards that you're talking about, like however many targets per game it is, was it like two or three different targets, 20 yards per game, like your two or three big plays away from that's basically even. And they've been there, they just haven't been completed. And I think that those things are pretty random and pretty volatile. A couple of other, another reason, or several reasons, why I don't think Tank Dell is like a disappeared per se. You mentioned 20 less yards per game. - Yeah. - CJ Stroud's less than 30 is over 30 yards per game less than he was last year. The delta between Stroud this year and last year is 33 yards per game. So like that's baked into the Tank Dell lack of yards per game this year versus last year, that the overall passing game has been down for the Houston Texans. And if the overall passing game for a team is gonna be down, the receivers are going to be down. - That's why I brought CJ up at the end. Yeah, because I mean, if everybody's being critical of the fact that his numbers are down, he's not the same quarterback from year one to year two, that's gonna have a trickle down effect on everybody that's trying to get the football. - And last year was there ever an option, or was there ever a game where Tank Dell wasn't at least a top two option? Ever. - Last year, no. - Ever. Never was there a game where Tank Dell wasn't a top two option. And there were several games, two games that Nico was out where he was the number one option. The Indianapolis game, they had all the big three, they had Tank or they had Joe Mixon, they had Nico, they had Stefan Diggs available in that game. The Bears game, same thing. Now, Mixon did leave that game with an injury. The Minnesota game where they got hammered, they had Nico, they had Steph, so Tank Dell was the third option. The Jacksonville game, he actually missed the Jacksonville game 'cause DeMico Ryan's had him playing with a 27 point deficit on the final series of the game, which was ignorant, Dan Campbell would never. When the Texans beat the Bills, Joe Mixon did not play, but Nico and Stefan Diggs did, so Tank Dell was the third option against the Patriots. Mixon was back, Nico was gone, but Diggs was playing, so Tank was the third option. Against the Packers, Joe Mixon was playing, Stefan Diggs was playing, Tank was the third option. Against the Colts, Mixon Diggs, both played. Tank Dell was the third option. Against the Jets, only Mixon played, no Stefan Diggs, no Nico, so one Tank Dell game where he was a top two option. Against Detroit, Mixon played, Nico did not, Stefan Diggs was gone. So the second game where Tank Dell was the number two option, and in for Dallas, Nico was back, still had Joe Mixon in and against the Titans, Nico was back, still had Joe Mixon, same thing with Jacksonville. So Tank Dell last year was never less than a top two option. This year, he's only been a top two option twice, and we know with stats and numbers and football. I mean, you play fantasy, you know this. Adam Ronis tells us this all the time. Fantasy's about opportunity. Tank Dell doesn't have the opportunity of being a top two option in this offense like he did a year ago. - I pushed back a little bit back, 'cause you mentioned the Bills game. I mean, Nico left before halftime. Obviously, you mentioned in the Bears game. - He can't cherry pick it now though. I mean, you're cherry picking now. Like, look, you could go back to last year or two where there were examples of this, I'm sure, that work against you. - I mean, the question I asked when we held it over to go into this segment was how many games had all four guys played together in full, and the answer's one. - But I think that's misleading though, because if Tank Dell was a top two option all of last year, you should be saying, is there ever been a time where Tank Dell was a top two option this year? Because even if he's the third option, that's less than being the second option. - Sure, but look, again, this is not, I feel like I'm banging my head on the wall, repeating this and making an argument that I'm not actually making. But I'm not trying to say Tank is any less of a player, but I'm asking the question, why are the yards? Why are the targets? Why are the receptions down? I think obviously your answer is, he's less important to the offense than he has a lesser only. - That's underselling what you put in the rundown. You said his disappearing act. - Okay, should I word it more blandly? - You're kind of hedging here a little bit. - What the heck? - Your hedging, it says, who do we blame for the Tank disappearing act? That your hedging a little bit. - Disagree, look, again, his numbers are down. If we want to call it disappearing, if we want to call it drop, if we want to call it dip, I don't care what word we use. I'm just trying to figure out and ask the question, why are the numbers down? You obviously think it's because he's less important to the offense than he was with your prior. - What do you say? - I would say it's that in the overall offensive production in the league is down, as we've seen pretty much across the board, including with CJ Sprout. - Where are you at, Blake? - I said previously, it's the offensive line. It's CJ not being the same CJ from a year ago, and it's obviously the line is connected to so much. It's the additional weapons that you started the season with. It's the fact that from an overall standpoint, play calling and otherwise, everything has changed. I think there's so many folds and layers to this, and yet he still is within range of where he was a year ago to where I don't think he disappeared by any stretch, but I think that it goes back to what we said at the start of the year that I think we expected all the guys' numbers to be down from what they had been previously because more talent in a system where you're trying to get everybody to the football and CJ hasn't been as sharp. - Texture only one ball, texture he strikes better not being the number one option.
