Started his career as a fourth-grade teacher and is now a proud husband, father and the United States Secretary of Education. Give it up for Dr. Miguel Cardona. -I love it. -Wow. I'm going to have to travel with you all. I love that intro. I'm going to need that horn, too. -That's right. Imagine that. Every time you speak, it's like... [Laughter] Oh, man. I have to start my meetings like that. Yeah, I love it. Good to be with you all. Thank you so much, Felicidades, Portolo, Casolo, Gerardo, Ermano. Before we get into informing our audience more about how to forgive their student loans, there's a lot of information about that and also a lot of confusion. So we just want to clarify that for our audience. And thank you for all the amazing work that you have been doing, along with your entire team, to be able to help out, especially Latinos in education and in forgiving their student loans. I just want to hear more about your journey. Bryce's Boricuas, tell me about your journey. How did you end up where you're at today? Yeah, absolutely. Look, I consider myself a little Ybarito from Connecticut. My parents came from Puerto Rico for a better life. I always say they left a paradise of Puerto Rico for the project in Connecticut so that the next generation could have a better life. Yes, you know, my parents served the community. They worked hard. They sacrificed. They didn't have the benefit of being able to go on to higher education, but they instilled in their kids hard work ethic and serving your community. My brother became a police officer and followed my father's footsteps. That's in my hometown. My sister was a social worker in my hometown, and I became the teacher. And I've been blessed along the journey to fight for equality and equal access, and it brought me here. Now I'm, you know, the same kid. You know, I always say, I don't change who I am at all. Now I'm inviting the president. There you go. Muchas gusto, Dr. Cardona, this is me. Show my last name is Rizzo. I just want to say, man, congratulations on everything. And is there anything you can do to change the launches at the cafeterias? We need some more Latino spices and there are no more sloppy yoes, more like sloppy hosés, some tamales, some abituelas, chulleta con con. Hey, that sounds great, man. I'm telling you, we need more abituelas, or I'm hoping we could get some pernillo out there, but, you know, we'll see. We'll see how that works. Oros precolitos, fritos, some tamales. It's all good. I know, Primavana here, who's part of our show, Eddie, also, who's part of our show. We will love that in our schools, and swing by here as well. Well, Felicidades on reaching the stage that you're in today. And what are you playing your office when you are there near the White House or in our nation's capital? Are you bumping some salsa, some reggaeton, like what? Berbonia, what's on your playlist? You know it, man. Of course. I always say, man, you can't change your stripes no matter where you are. So look, Mark Anthony plays a lot in my office. You know, when I need some inspiration, I love the hip hop too. So when I'm getting ready for a hearing, I get out there and I do that. And, you know, it's funny because sometimes I bring my phone out at the White House and I'm in there and I play that music there as well. So, you know, we've got to get the Shakita in there. Gloria Steffan, you know, all the other giants that open the doors for a lot of us, you know? Hey, you got to send us a video where your Biden is breakdancing to some hip hop. You know what I'm saying? I work on it. I work right after I'm done with the law. What do your kids think about the fact that you are the US Secretary of Education? And, you know, how did that happen? You know, how do they take the news when that call came up? I was in a situation where I was a Commissioner of Education in Connecticut and the pandemic hit. And, you know, it was probably one of the toughest times in my life, not only professionally, but personally, you know, knowing death rates were high, we didn't have vaccines, we didn't have tests, and we had to reopen our schools safely, right? So, that was difficult work. And, you know, I felt like I was like forged through a fire to be tough and just move forward and keep kids at the sound of the conversation. And we were able to be successful in Connecticut. We brought laptops in the hands of kids, we fed kids, we got donations from philanthropy to make sure we had mental health supports. And that caught the attention of the President. So, you know, I spent about three days in DC before I became Secretary of Education. I think I was protesting in college or something. And, but this is not, I'm not a DC guy, you know what I'm saying? I'm an educator, I'm a father, I'm a teacher. And, you know, for the President to call me and say, "Look, I saw what you did in Connecticut. We need somebody that gets it. We need some, I'm a first-generation college student." Do you know what I mean? I can't go mutually narrow. It's not like I'm here because I made major donations. I'm an educator, I'm a father, and that's what he wanted here, and that's what he got. Amen, and a man of fades as well. All day, man. Oh, the test that I had in 2020 during the pandemic just, it was got tested me to see if I got the fortitude to stay faithful, like Joe, right? And, are you ready for the next challenge? And the next challenge was coming here, and only 46% of our schools across the country were open when I got here. Wow. So, within nine months, we had over 97% open. We were able to recover, you know, some of the learning laws were still fighting for that. When we're fixing a broken system, the higher education system is broken, and we're fixing it, but there's that belief, improving FAFSA and getting more college eight out to kids, or holding colleges accountable, man. We're doing the work that has not ever been done. Dr. Cardona, I know a lot of moms are very grateful that Joe opens schools up as soon as possible because their little eight-ins and their little Lupitas were driving them crazy at home. Right, me, Joe. And that's why it was important to reopen schools so that Lupitas could get back to class, what they need to be. Let me tell you, every parent had a new appreciation for teachers, for sure, during the pandemic. Speaking of student loan forgiveness, our producer, Eddie, the virgin, AK, Presentel No Sabo Crew, you know, he owes student loans as well for college. And we want to know more about these programs and how our listeners can apply to be able to get their loans forgiven and not have to pay them back. Let us know coming up next with Secretary Cardona. Where can we get more info? Please take it away. Thank you. Absolutely. Look, I said it earlier in the call, right? We're fighting to make higher education more affordable and more accessible. It's broken. And there are some things that we've done that we've been successful. We've provided debt relief for 4 million people over $146 billion. We've been doing it and to be honest with you, it was just warming up. We had a big plan a couple of years ago and the Supreme Court shut it down. But we came back with another plan and that's what the President announced on Monday. That plan with the 4 million will include 30 million people and it's very simple. What I would tell your listeners is go to studenta.gov and see if you're eligible for debt relief. There's different plans there. So you got people that are listening, right, that are nurses that work in the public sector. Those people are eligible for public service loan forgiveness. We fixed that program. It was broken, man. There were only 7,000 people four years before us. We're over $850,000 in three years. Billions of billions, I think $60 billion just in that program alone. And then I'm going to encourage everyone that's listening. If you have student loans, try to sign up for the SAVE program. So the SAVE program is brand new. People were paying their loans and they were paying $7,800 a month. They didn't have that money. So they would go into default. So the SAVE plan right now gives you lower monthly payments so you can manage the payments. And then that automatically signs you up to get debt relief if you're eligible for it. So if you have a smaller loan and you've been paying for 10 years. So we have different versions, different models that different people are able to get. But you have to go to studentaid.gov and sign up there. And I would tell folks to sign up for the SAVE plan because a lot of those things are automatic. That is so important. So go to studentaid.gov. Eddie, did you get that, bro? Studentaid.gov. Yes, I want to look at that. It seems like it has a lot of information for me. Yeah. And once you're on there, Dr. Cardona, how do you know which program fits for you? Is there a way where you enter your information? And then it says, oh, you're eligible for XYZ program and so on and so forth. There's different programs there that have descriptions of who's eligible for them. So you get to pick which one. But like I said, the SAVE plan is one that it's going to drop your undergraduate payments in half in July. So that's the one that's really hot right now. We've got over 7 million people signing up for that. There's loan forgiveness that's eligible. And then another thing that the president mentioned. So, Edgar, you bring up a good point. Like, which one do I go for? Right. What the president announced this week? He said, look, instead of you applying for it, why don't we come to you to tell you that you're eligible and just do it. Instead of you having to apply for it. What does that mean? That means that that's the proposal that we just put out there. That the president wants to do. So, you know, hopefully we're going to get it through. And then look at the different plans and hopefully it works out, and it's 4 million people so far. Absolutely. Well, thank you so much. Secretary Cardona for being with us. We appreciate all the hard work that you and your team are doing to help out our students, especially Latino. StudentA.gov is the place to go. Dr. Cardona, Eddie right here is wondering if there's like a promo code for him when he automatically gets all his debt deleted just because he knows you now from the show. Right. Okay. He's going to have to put hashtag showboy on signature. That's the promo code right there, hashtag showboy. That's it. Thank you so much, Secretary Cardona for being with us. Blessings. Y esta la proxima. All right, good talking to you all, man. Muchizima. Gracias. Business. It's all the things that keep this world turning.
