Mike Moore Media. Right now I'm checking in with the Reads for a Police Department and Captain Jamie. Do you go by James or Jamie? Someone said both. Yeah I've been told Jamie since I was a kid. My government name is James but I go by James. Okay all right well I'll make it official and just say Captain, Captain James Bain. How about that? But first yeah you've just been promoted to Captain so congratulations on that. Give us a little background on you before we get into some holiday safety tips here. How did you get into law enforcement? Some things like that Captain. All right so I guess as a young child it was I felt like I was called to law enforcement and I got started late in life. I was 30 years old when I went through the BLET program out at RCC. I started with RCC in 2009 on patrol shortly after I was a K9 officer for a few years and then I went out to the lake and did the park ranger for I think it's about three or four or five years there. Came back with some other lieutenant over community policing and then went back to patrol. Came back out of patrol. I was lieutenant over the Narcotics Division for a few years and then I was moved to lieutenant over the detective division and then just recently November 1st Captain Brian Oakley retired and I was promoted to the rank of captain over the detective division. That's currently where I am at this time. Wow you've done a lot still doing a lot with the police department. Yeah yeah I just tried to I wanted to be able to to be somewhat versed in everything that the police department has to offer so wanted to be well-rounded I guess be the correct way to study that. Yeah well I would say you certainly are. Wow that's very impressive. Again congratulations on your recent promotion. Okay well it's I shared some of the things from your Facebook page last night about some car safety tips and things like that but this is an important time of the year to watch out for lots of things though isn't it? So bring us up to date on some important tips here Captain. Okay so first of all you know everybody's gonna be out about doing a lot of shopping over the next few weeks and what what we want people to do is just to be aware of your surroundings. So many so many people nowadays are looking in their phones and not looking around and and I'm not trying to step on any toes but but when you're out and about and you know you've got you probably got cash on you and you're doing shopping and you have valuable items with you. Just try not to try to look around and be aware of your surroundings look around and see who's who's around you who's not around you and just keep your focus on those around you while you're out and about and you know when you go to shopping mall one of the things you can do is look at the building and see where those cameras are located in those parking lots and try to park your vehicle in that camera view because criminals they know where those cameras are pointing and they're less likely to try to rob you or harm you if you are in camera view and also in those parking lots if you're gonna be there after start try to stay in the lit areas of the parking lot if possible but but yeah just you know think about things like yeah a lot of people don't think well where's the cameras at let me park in front of the camera but but that's something you can do to take an extra step for your safety. Mm-hmm yeah that's great you know and I appreciate you mentioning that particularly for for females but for everyone I guess but I've never really particularly thought to look where security cameras are but that is a great idea yeah yeah yeah a lot of people don't think that way and you know like I said if you're paying attention to those around you a lot of times you'll see things happening before they happen. That's right. The language stuff like that. Mm-hmm sure. And take a friend with you it's possible take somebody with you and you know if you have to look at your phone to see what this latest sale is you know have them watching around while you're looking at your phone things of that nature. Mm-hmm sure okay. Mm-hmm and you know I wanted to touch on mailing gifts. Mm-hmm you know if you decide to mail a gift to a family member I would suggest that you go with a carrier that allows you to track the passage and then obviously securely share that tracking number with the person who's going to receive it yes that way when it shows up on their doorstep they know it's there and they can get it and bring it in the house you know so so we don't invite these to take things off the front porch. Mm-hmm sure. And never never mail cash please. Mm-hmm and uh um and one of the one of the big things that we're getting hit with right now is this scams I wanted to touch on that it's not necessarily holiday safety but it is because we see a uptick in them around the holidays. Mm-hmm if you get a phone call or a text message that think think about it before you act look at that text message look listen to that phone conversation and say you know do this sound right and they're they're gonna want to keep your attention they're going to want you to click on links or call this number. Mm-hmm you know one of the ones we've heard recently is they're calling and saying they are the police department or if they may call you and say hey this is Captain Bain you have you have a want for your arrest and unless you give us six thousand dollars in this one we're gonna arrest you. Wow. That is that should be a major red flag right there. Um hang up on them if this if they're legitimate hang up and you because sometimes they can even make it look like they're calling from our number. Mm-hmm but yeah just hang up on them and and call the call the direct line to the police department or the sheriff's department or if possible speak to an officer face to face and say hey listen this has been said you know if you legitimately have a warrant then they will tell you yes you do or they'll say no that's a scam and we just we just don't want people to be tricked into sending money because that's not how it operates you can't buy your way out of a out of a warrant or a charge. Yeah and you know that this we're hearing there's more and more to things like that from from a different law enforcement agencies and I tell you one captain that I've gotten multiple times here lately and that's supposed to be they say from my grandchild you know and the giveaway there immediately is that's a grandson well I have granddaughters not a grand son but I you know I've engaged some of those and and call law enforcement and and gotten numbers and things like that too so what's the best things to doing something like that still hang up on them. Yeah because the longer you you know the longer you entertain them the more they're going to try to instill a sense of urgency and what they want it they want to have that fear factor and you know if if if they call and say hey you're you're who ever you know hang up and call that person directly you know and if you don't get them a lot of ways keep at it because I've heard so many stories about people sending money because they thought their niche nephews grandson granddaughter was in jail and they had to send this money you know just I wouldn't I wouldn't entertain them any longer than you have to hang up on them and if they keep calling back you know bought the number but and then reach out the law enforcement and you know let us know what happened let us know you know and so we can report it if you do get scammed please call us so we can report it and you can also go to IC3.gov that's IC3.gov and report that to the FBI as well. Oh great okay and these scammers seem to get smarter and smarter they really just just have gone above and beyond from what they used to be too aren't they. Right right and the scary part is and people need to be aware of this is with this artificial intelligence people are they're able to make it sound like my voice your voice or whoever's voice they're trying to mimic so it may even sound like your grandson calling and saying hey I'm locked up you just got to be very careful you know if they are locked up then they say hey reasonable police department's got me okay I'm hanging up and calling them and if they say anything that okay that's a scam yeah okay because they yeah they're not going to want to let you off the phone yeah that is great great advice right there okay okay what's next if we have time I'd like to touch on some after the holiday things that you can do to protect yourself as well sure one thing you see is be careful about putting those big boxes out by the curb of the trash can that tells everybody that you've got a brand new 75 inch TV hanging on the wall in the house yeah or or that you have the newest game console that everybody's looking for you know it's just things you don't really think about but you know you have unfortunately in today's world you have to think about things like that so let's break those boxes down and recycle them or at least put them in trash bags before you put them by the curb yeah and be careful about posting pictures of your new gifts on social media you know unless you know your platform is secure and nobody can see it but friends you know you know everybody wants to post uh their children riding their new full will or their new dirt bike and unfortunately there's people who or may see that they'll say okay I know where to go to get a full will or dirt bike you know be careful when you put some of your stuff out there online because it's it's out there for the whole world to see that's exactly right yeah you know and that kind of reminds me too we just had a kind of a family vacation for Thanksgiving and you know people are quick to post pictures uh oh that's a good clue hey we're away at the house and be careful for stuff like that oh my goodness you are absolutely right yeah absolutely mm-hmm wait until you get home to post those pictures that's exactly right if you're busy if you're busy if you're busy then wait till you get home to post those pictures and talk about what a great time you had while you were there mm-hmm yeah okay all right wow this is some uh some wonderful advice anything else before we wrap up um you know I think I uh I thought I went through it kind of quick but I think I hit the highlights and you know the most important things and it just just to uh you know be careful especially driving you know we didn't bring up weather but you know with the holidays brings weather we may have some snow and ice just be mindful of your traveling and the slow you know take the slowest speeds and be aware of the weather and the driver's invasion mm-hmm yeah um and what about uh the one I think you'd posted too or about on your Facebook page read to a police department about warming up your car and just leaving it in the driveway just sitting there while it's uh getting the ice off so tell us about that too be be aware of that yeah yeah yeah absolutely uh yeah that's you know you unfortunately that's inviting somebody for a free ride uh you know if you got to do that if you're absolutely positively going to do it try to try to lock the vehicle and have a separate key to get into it once it's warm or you know some of the vehicles have those automatic starts where the vehicle is locked and secure and it won't move until you actually put the key in it um yeah that's that's a great and you know we've had we've had a uptick in in in uh in some of the some of the vehicle thefts um you know I don't know if everybody's aware but if you have a key uh you know there's there's been a uptick in keyers so if you drive in a keyer just make sure you keep it secure um they not just us all over getting into the vehicle vehicle from Piers and uh some of the other some of the other vehicles that's mostly Piers like that so if you have a keyer just make sure to keep that thing blocking in with another vehicle if possible if you're not going to be at home for a while okay very good all righty before we finish uh give us that uh dot gov um website you had earlier so I can now make sure we uh get the word out on that for sure was it was it i c three i c i c three dot gov but that's that's a reporting platform for the FBI for scams okay so it's it's the letter i uh and the letter c as an ice christmas i c and the number three dot gov yes okay great all right I was not aware of that so yeah it's good to know well uh captain bane uh good to talk to you thanks for all of the important information appreciate you and again congratulations on your promotion and continuing uh all the best there in law enforcement with the reasonable police department thank you sir i appreciate okay all the best have a have a wonderful Christmas you too thank you thanks bye okay and and hopefully uh captain bane has given us some good information for you to think about so that you will have a wonderful and safe christmas too you can't be too careful uh their scammers their thieves their people out there uh everywhere so uh uh we certainly want you to be protected best you can uh take care be on the alert uh this holiday season again that's i c three dot gov uh that goes uh directly to the uh FBI uh it sounds like so um i may want to make sure you have that to kind of jot it down handy somewhere you may need it hopefully not but uh uh just stay safe this holiday season you can get more information stay right up to the minute on what's happening on facebook with reedsville police department
