more media Hi, I'm Mike Moore. Welcome to ROCO Live. This is our weekly get together where we talk to lots of people kind of fine tuning this program. So we're getting more into music and in the new year we'll be doing more and more that of course, as I've mentioned before. Our program is sponsored by Sandy Cross General merchandise in Readswell. Right now I want to talk to songwriter Rick Lang. He's on the line and it's been a while since we talked. Hey, Rick, how you doing? Hey, fantastic. It's good to reconnect with you, Mike. It has been a while and I'm looking forward to picking up where we left off last. Yeah, me too. Yeah. And I'm thinking it's probably been about 10 years. So we've got a lot of catching up to do. We need more time. So let's do more programs. But let's let's start right now with your latest and this is your third gospel album, Blue Collar Gospel. Oh my gosh. It's Phil. You got some you got some heavy hitters on this one. Yeah, we're very fortunate to to make some connection with some of the best some of the top vocalists in bluegrass music and beyond to be featured on the on the 11 tracks in this record. And they all, you know, one thing I've always heard is, you know, the singer can really elevate your song and really make the song fly from a great vocal performance. And I think that's true. And some of the vocal performances on Blue Collar Gospel are just stunning. When you write a song, Rick, do you have someone in mind that you think would be? That's just the perfect voice. I want to hear on this. I really don't. I think when I actually write, I don't have I don't really have any artists or what's going to happen to the song afterwards in mind. But by the time the song gets done, and most of the songs of writing are co-written with a collaborator, quite often one of us will suggest, wow, that'd be really good for someone. So can you imagine hearing somebody's voice in this particular song? I think that that does happen. But the kind of wiggle after the song is done and kind of figure out, well, who would that be good for? Who do they sound like would be a perfect bit for this particular artist? Yeah. You have been writing songs, telling stories a long, long time. How did this all get started? Well, my journey is, I think, very different than many other writers. I didn't really get hooked on bluegrass music or discover bluegrass music until my mid-40s. And I grew up on soul music and R&B and Motown and rock and roll. And I didn't even wasn't even familiar with old-time country music. And I discovered all that later in life. And when I discovered bluegrass music, I was intrigued by the songs. I was intrigued by the songwriters because the song sounded so real and so genuine, they mirrored the life itself. So I started listening to bands like the bluegrass cardinals and the oil opsin and quicksilver and other bands who were popular in the late '80s, early '90s. And I started following the songwriters when I heard a song that I really loved the way the song was written. I just followed them. And then at one point I said, "I'd love to write songs like that." So I just started making an attempt to write songs myself. And it took me quite a while to really get my feet wet and get grounded to where I was running songs that sounded okay. But I became very passionate about it and dedicated to working hard at learning how to write songs. And I think it was songwriters like Pete Goble, especially in Randall Hilton, who had lots of hit songs back in the '80s and '90s. And I wanted to be like them. And I was influenced by them. I became friends with them. They were my source of inspiration and my mentor. It's been, that's how it all started. And that was, well, that was, I don't know how many years ago, but it was about mid to late '80s. Yeah. You know, I can kind of relate to your story a little bit. I grew up a lot older than you. I grew up in the '50s. '60s was in radio in the early '60s. So I was playing that kind of music. But then had some mentors who were kind of into everything from Montevani to Ray Conif and all that kind of music. So I appreciated all of those genres of music too. So I was late coming into bluegrass. But once you and a friend introduced me to that and I thought, "Wow, I have, what have I missed?" But when you know the history and the background and the music itself, it's easy to become quickly intrigued and attached to that, isn't it? It sure is. When, you know, I didn't discover bluegrass through the first generation, but it was the second generation of bluegrass. But once I started listening and getting, and falling in love with it, I just started exploring and working my way back to, you know, the early pioneers of bluegrass music and realize how amazing it was and how great the songs were and the performances and how much the music moved you. And I just became infactuated. I didn't want to hear or play anything else except for bluegrass music and bluegrass gospel music really attracted me to it as well. But I just, after all these years of writing, my love and passion for songwriting and bluegrass music hasn't waned. It is stronger than it ever was. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The storytelling there is, wow, it's just really special. So, okay, I've got to ask then, so do you still have your, still have your Motown records? I do, and I still listen to, I still listen to Motown, soul music, sand cook, and some R&B. And actually, I believe it or not, when I listen to these old songs, sometimes I pick up new song ideas from listening to them, and I've taken the songs. I actually, I took a do-op song from the one of the most popular ones in the late 50s that was a song called Only You, which was a big popular do-op song and turned it into a southern gospel song. The same title, but put a gospel spin on it and found, I could do that. So, when I dig into those old songs, I'm looking for lines and song ideas and titles that I can kind of recycle to something that's appropriate for this day and age and time. Yeah, that's pretty cool when you can, because you're listening to the music differently now than you did. Absolutely, and so I still draw a lot from that kind of music, and in one thing I've learned that's helped my songwriting a lot is to make my songs more soulful and to try to make people feel something when they hear one of my songs. And I think I developed that attraction to the soul element in music and having it be very soulful from listening to Ray Charles and listening to a Victor Franklin, helped me develop that soulful feeling in some of my gospel songs. Sure, yeah, yeah, that's two good examples, that'll do it. Before we do anything else, let's listen to a cut here to right now from Blue Collar Gospel, Rick Lang has put together another wonderful collection of songs. Tell me which one to play first and maybe a little background on that, Rick. Well, that's a good question. So, what am I going to play? Oh, well, so here's one of the songs on there that was the first single on the song on the album was called Just Beyond. And just beyond the song I wrote with my friend Mike Richards and Wendy Robinson. And Mike Richards is a really good writer. He draws from the sound of the early Stanley brothers in kind of mountain sounds and sounds a lot of our songs we write together sound like they're written like 80 years ago. And so we wrote this particular song. He and his writing partner Wendy had started the song. And when I went into a writing session, he asked me if I would consider helping him finish it. And I said, "Hey, play it for him. What do you got going?" And he played a bit of it. And at that we finished the song and put it in the mix with the songs for the album. And it turned out so good. The song features Barry Abernett, Abernett, the Unpleed vocals and John Metter of Authentic Unlimited, who does some incredible high harmony singing background singing. And the song turned out to be a number one song on several of the charts. It was released six months ago. And it's still going strong today. And it's just one of my favorite tracks. And a lot of it goes to my co-writer Mike Richards and Wendy Robinson and great vocal performance by those great bluegrass singers called Just Beyond. Okay. Well, we certainly know Barry Abernett, he, Mountain Heart, and he's been with a lot of good groups. So we know his music for sure and put it with your words. And yeah, so let's listen to that right now. Then we'll talk again on the other side. Okay, here we go, Rick. Each step that I take as I make my way home, my sights from the sand on the sun. Towards Cayman's fair shore, I'll keep pressing home till my life's journey is done. Just Beyond the miracle, Abernett of Jordan, I've had beautiful city for a square. Just Beyond those things, those stars, not me things. Dear loved ones await over there. There's still ridges to cross when I reach golden waters, bringing the gods guide in hand. Way off in the distance I see that sweet summit of the beauty of you. Just Beyond the miracle, Abernett of Jordan, I've had beautiful city for a square. Just Beyond those things, those stars, not me things. Dear loved ones await over there. Just Beyond lies a place, that Jesus prepared for the soul of man never died. No sorrow or cares, joy fills the air, not even one tear to your mind. Just Beyond the miracle, Abernett of Jordan, I've had beautiful city for a square. Just Beyond those things, those stars, not me things. Dear loved ones await over there. Just Beyond the miracle, Abernett of Jordan, I've had beautiful city for a square. Just Beyond those things, those stars, not me things. Dear loved ones await over there. It sounds good. The award-winning Barry Abernett and award-winning lots of talent on this, including the men who wrote that song, and that is Rick Lang, and he's on the line with us now. Rick, who else is on that particular song? Actually, there's two other vocalists on the song. Well, Barry Abernett, Abernett, the single lead, John Metter, things those really great high parts, and Tim Raybahn, who's a great singer, sang a harmony part, and singing bass on there, the killer bass track, that is Bradley Walker, who's an outstanding vocalist and lead singer in his own right. Four singers on there, man. It's a strong vocal performance. Oh, it really is. Wow, you can fill that one for sure. Give us a name. Let's drop some more names here. Others that are part of this blue-collar gospel album. Who else do we have here? Well, let's go on a list. So the title track Blue-collar gospel is a song I wrote with Jerry Sally and Bill White, and that features Jerry's Sally and the Oak Ridge Boys on it. And that song kind of defines what Blue-collar gospel is all about, just gospel music for the ordinary, everyday, working people, and for the people who are saved and the people who are not saved, gospel music for everybody. Yeah, yeah. Second song on there, Rise Above It All, is a song I wrote with Becky Buller, who's written to stardom in recent years, and a great person, a great singer, a great songwriter. We wrote that, and she and Nathan Woodard do a thing on that one together. I love Becky Buller's music. Oh, she's so good. She is just one of the best, and she's a good friend, dear friend. So the next song on there is called Old Rugged Me, which is another song I wrote with Mike Richards in his friend, Tim Webb, in Dave Atkins, who's a phenomenal singer, is featured on that. Old Rugged Me, that's a really strong song on there. One of my favorites. We already talked about Just Beyond. So the next track on there, which was just released as a single last week, is called Everyday Blessings. And Everyday Blessings is a song I wrote with my long kind of friend, Daryl Mosley, who's one of the best singers and songwriters in Bluegrass, in Jaylee Roberts, sings on there. And they do it, you know, they do it duet on there. It's just phenomenal. It's a great track. Everyday Blessings. The next one, Church Bell's A Ringin, his song I wrote with Bill White, and that features Danny Paisley, who's one of the best singers in any kind of music, who just crushes it on this track. And the supporting cast on that one is very Abernathy, Ben James, and Bradley Walker. The next track is actually was my first attempt to write a duet-style gospel song, kind of in the mode of what the Louvain brothers did. So it's kind of geared to two people singing it, and it's a duet. And I wrote that with my friend Jim and Luna Woolsey, who were from Indiana, and a song turned out great. And we get Darren and Brooke Aldrich, who sing on it. And it's just absolutely a stunning vocal performance by Darren and Brooke. Always, yes. The next one, well, I've gotten to write with Melody Williamson from the Dan Williamson branch in the last few years. He's a great talented young lady and a good performer, singer, great musician, and a good songwriter. And we wrote this song called Get On Board. And one of our goals on this record was to, in any case where my co-writer was a really good singer and performer, have my co-writer featured on the track as a vocalist. So in this big particular case, we got the Williamson branch ladies' sing on there, which is Melody and her two sisters sing on Get On Board. And it's just, they sing like angels. It's really beautiful. Williamson branches, man. They're a great band. Wonderful people, good friends. So the next song I'm there is a song I wrote quite a few years ago with Donia Lizzie. I don't know if you're familiar with Donna? No, very much. I love her music too. You know, I'm kind of, I think I'm kind of prone to female vocalists. You know, I just, I love their, I love their singing. Same here. And speaking about female vocalists, one of our goals on this particular record compared to the album before that, which was kind of sing on her shout, was to have more female vocal presence on here. So we get more female singers on here and it turned out to be, it turned out really great. And Don was one of them because she had not sung on any of my studio albums before. So we picked out a song we wrote called A Little Bit More Like Him and asked her to sing on it, and she did. And the background vocalists on that particular track are John Metter, Kim Raybonne, and Bradley Walker. And it's really, really good. And I was really meant a lot to have the honors sing on the song we wrote together. Sure, yeah. The next song on there is called Catch Me When I Fall. Catch Me When I Fall is a song I wrote with Shannon Slaughter. And I don't know if you're familiar with him. He's a great singer. He's been in a lot of great Bluegrass groups. He's been in the Lonesome River band. He's played with Larry Stevenson, among other bands. And he's got his own solo career going. And he's one of my favorite singers in Bluegrass music. We wrote this song together called Catch Me When I Fall. And I went came down to record. We were trying to get him get it so he could sing on it. But we had a couple sessions set up and something things came up and he couldn't make the sessions. And we ended up running out of time. We had to really kind of track down another vocalist for the song to get it done in time. And we got Alan Byby to sing on it. And I mean, Alan's one of the best mandolin players and singers in Bluegrass music. And he totally did an amazing job in the song. He sings on that track with Jerry Sally sings background and Jerry's daughter, daughter Magnolia Williams sings on it. So it's got Jerry and his daughter singing background on it. Well, just a little P.S. here. You mentioned Shannon. We've got a lot of L.R.B. fans down this way for sure. We're kind of in that in their neighborhood, so to speak. But Alan Byby, just one county over here from us. So everyone in this area, big Alan Byby fans as well. So it's good to hear him a part of your album. Yeah, that was really important. Alan's a good friend and he's recorded some of my songs before. I speak from the Lonesome River Band. I should throw in here that my very first cut as a songwriter in 1990 was a song that the Lonesome River Band recorded. Oh, really? Wow. On their on their on their I was just really getting to a point where I wrote songs that didn't sound too bad. And they this was when Dan Taminsky and Ronnie Bowman were in the band and Sammy Seeler and a song called Listen to the Word of God on their Carrying the Tradition records. And and that went on to become Album of the Year that year. I mean, May Album of the Year. And it was my first song cut. Oh, that's a good one to start with. Yeah. Yeah. And in fact, Sammy, I was going to say Sammy just just upped the road from us in Meadows of Dan, Virginia. So yeah, he's he's a big big name in this area for sure. But I interrupted you. So you'll go back, finish that story. Well, so I thought it was very fortunate that they they liked the song and and almost and I should tell you a little side story. I've been sending songs to band and bands for a couple of years and not getting much results. I wouldn't hear from a lot of bands and I knew some of my songs weren't probably that great. So I wasn't surprised. But I sent him a I sent Kim Austin a tape of four or five songs. One of them was listen to the Word of God and I didn't hear anything back. So I figured, well, there was nothing they're interested in. So I went to a loan. I went to an Allison Crouse concert in New Hampshire the next year with my wife and I went to go to the restroom and I was walking to the restroom and I looked up and I saw Dan Tyminski standing against the wall. And I guess they were going to have him as a guest on a couple of the songs. And I hadn't seen Dan for a while. So I was going to go back to my scene. He said, Hey, Rick, good to see her. He said, by the way, you sent us this song. I'll listen to the Word of God, right? I said, yeah. He said, well, we're interested in recording it, but we lost the tape. We lost the cassette tape. Is there any chance you could send me, send another cassette tape? Because we're like a recorder. So I said, Dan, I send you a dozen cassette tapes of the song. I was like, I couldn't believe that was actually happening. So I sent it to him and sure enough, it ended up on the album and was a very popular song. And that kind of gave me the confidence that maybe I could write LaGrasse gospel songs. And that was a big turning point for me and I'm very grateful to Tim Austin and to Dan and Ronnie Bowman and everybody in the band for just doing a fantastic job in that song. Yeah, that is a really good story too. I love that. So, well, there's only one more song on the album we haven't talked about. And to me, it's probably the most important song to me on the album because it's called "On the Tips of Angel's Wings." And "On the Tips of Angel's Wings" is a song that Becky Buller helped me write. So the story is that my mom passed away from pancreatic cancer back in 2001. I'm sorry. Right after 9/11. And it was kind of a really sad time because she went way before her time. And a few months after she passed, I had this vision of my mom rising up on the tips of Angel's Wings rising up to heaven. And it was so real, it seemed like it was really happening in my vision. And I had always wanted to write a song about that. That's how I perceived my mom sending to heaven. And I tried for years to write that song by myself and I could never write anything that I was happy with. Then several years later, when I was writing with Becky Buller, I told her the story. I said, "Hey, would you help me write this song?" It's really important to me. That's what I'm going to remember my mom buys. So we wrote "On the Tips of Angel's Wings." And that was thrilled when it was chosen to be on the album. And it features Alicia Nugent with Ben James and Jerry Sally. And it just allows me very meaningful to me to have that on this record. Sure. Very personal story for sure. Let's listen to that right now if we can, Rick. And then we'll talk a little bit more on the other side. Okay, here we go. Now we're good. I was fly away on the tips of angels wings high above the clouds where the joy does ring. When Jesus calls my name, I'm going to shout and sing. As I rose up to heaven on the tips of angels' wings, won't be here much longer in this bed. I can't see them under overhead. Don't you worry about me, don't you weep and mourn. Come the morning I'll be going home. I was flying away on the tips of angels' wings high above the clouds where the joy builds ring. When Jesus calls my name, I'm going to shout and sing. As I rose up to heaven on the tips of angels' wings. My mom always said that they would come. When my time of water here was done. I know that she's watching away and there for me to celebrate throughout eternity. I will fly away on the tips of angels' wings high above the clouds where the joy builds ring. When Jesus calls my name, I'm going to shout and sing. As I rose up to heaven on the tips of angels' wings, the light is growing brighter all around. In the distance on your game will stop itself. When my spirit leaves my body, I shall be set free. At last I'll feel the spirit as peace, spirit as peace. I'll fly away on the tips of angels' wings. High above the clouds where the joy builds ring. When Jesus calls my name, I'm going to shout and sing. As I rose up to heaven on the tips of angels' wings. As I rose up to heaven on the tips of angels' wings. Rick, what a wonderful tribute to your mother. Thank you for including that song on this CD. It's great. Thank you so much. Well, before our time gets away, we've already discussed this. We're going to do another program soon. Okay. I would love to welcome the opportunity and like to get a chance to share more. Tell more stories about some of these projects and about my songwriting and what's behind everything that's going on here. It's a lot of fun. In my age, I'm just really living my dream in a later stage in life of having songwriting be my full-time occupation and profession in something I never thought was possible, but I live and breathe songwriting. You know, I heard this some years back and I think it applies to both of us and many others who do what we love and I've been doing this for a long time and in broadcasting. And when you find your passion, you find your purpose. You would agree with that, I'm sure. That is so true and I went through a lot of my life and have not found anything I was deeply passionate about until I discovered bluegrass music and songwriting and I reconnected with my space. All those things converge and it was life-changing for me and I just feel like I do have a purpose. I know what my purpose is now and every day I get up and kind of follow that path that I'm on right now. I understand what you're saying for sure. I want to listen to one more song and then we're going to finish up now and we'll go out with that one. I'm kind of leaning or I queued up by number five everyday blessings since that just came out last week, but it's your time, it's your album, so you tell me what we should play to finish. Well, I'll tell you what, let's do the Williamson Branch Girls. It is so wonderful. Why don't we get on board? The song I wrote with Melody Williamson Keys and her sister is on here, just a joy. Let's hear up and hear the song. We'll do that now and that'll finish up our conversation too and then we will reconnect soon. Where can we find out more about your songwriting? Well, probably the easiest way is to go to my website which is just ricklangmusic.com and I have all my recordings on there, information about all my recordings. Actually I have a place where I have a lot of songs that haven't been recorded yet. I really high-end demos of my songs and people who go on there hear a lot of music that I've written with different folks on there and so I put a lot on there that people could listen to and hear and I hope people take time and find some songs on there that resonate with them. That would be my hope. And we need to mention I guess also that the new one, latest one out, your third gospel album blue collar gospel with all of these wonderful talented performers is available. It's from Billy Blue Records. You can go to their website as well. Executive producer Rick Lang and produced by Jerry Sally. Rick, this has been great to talk to you and hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday. Merry Christmas and thank you for this time. I know you before we started the podcast, you said you're writing, writing, writing all the time. So it's pretty cool. You've got some of those demos there on your website too so we can kind of see some things you're currently working on and maybe we'll hear eventually with some more big names. Yeah, well when I write a song we do a little phone work tape of them but some of them we do kind of a higher end demo of the song that kind of represents the definitive version of the song and that's what I send to artists and sometimes I've been very fortunate in the past few years to have several artists cover my songs and record them and we can talk about that more next time we connect too if you want. Good. Well I'll make a note of that and then yeah we will definitely talk soon in the new year. We'll get through the holidays here and all the good things there with family and friends and food and and Rick Lang thanks again for your sharing your wonderful music with us and we'll listen to this last song here. You know we're hearing more and more about Williamson Branch so I'm glad they're part of your CD too and we'll talk again soon. Thank you. Well thank you for everything you do and have a great day everybody. Okay you talk you take care of yourself and keep getting those wonderful songs out to us for us to enjoy. We all appreciate it. Thanks Rick. No thank you so much. Have a good day. You too. All right Rick Lang. Get on board. Get on board. Our destinations have ensured to live up there forever more with our blessed Lord.
