AP News, I'm Ben Thomas. Donald Trump was in court in Manhattan today for his hush money trial, while his claim of immunity in the federal election subversion case was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. The AP's Mark Sherman. The court seemed to reject Trump's claim that he's absolutely immune from prosecution. It also did not seem to embrace the Justice Department's argument that the trial should go ahead quickly and that the justices should simply agree with what lower courts have decided and that there is no immunity. The former president has sought to delay the trial beyond the 2024 election, and if he regains the presidency, he might order the Justice Department in that case to dismiss the case against him. New York's highest court has overturned Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction in order to new trial for the former movie mogul. Ukraine is pulling U.S. Abrams tanks from the front lines. U.S. officials say it's in part because Russian drones have made it too difficult for them to operate without coming under attack. U.S. economic growth slowed to start the year. Shelley Adler has details. In the final three months of last year, the gross domestic product was 3.4%. The Commerce Department reports that number, the economy's total output of goods and services, sank to 1.6% in the first quarter of this year. And Gus Fauche, who's the chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group says, that's okay. 1.6% is close to the economy's long run potential. It means that the economy is expanding at a solid pace, but not at that very rapid pace we saw in the second half of 2023. As for what these numbers mean to the Federal Reserve? The assumption is that we will see inflation slow over the next three, six months or so, and that should allow for rate cut sometime later this year. I'm Shelley Adler. In quarterbacks went 1, 2, 3 in the NFL draft, Caleb Williams to the Bears, Washington taking Jaden Daniel second and the Patriots grabbing Drake May. This is AP News. In Italy, there's a new tax on tourists visiting Venice. Karen Shamas explains. The popular and fragile Lagoon City of Venice is charging 5 euro for day trippers to enter as the city grapples with over tourism. Tourists flood the walkway outside of Venice's central train station. The entrance fee of over $5 has been introduced by authorities in the hope that it will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days. The idea is that it will make the city more livable for its dwindling residents. Simone Venturini, Venice's municipal councillor for tourism. "We need to find a balance, a new balance between the tourist and the resident." Residents opposing the day-trip attacks insist that the solution to Venice's woes are to boost the resident population and the services they need. By limiting short-term rentals and boosting housing, I'm Karen Shamas. Thank you, Karen. And I'm Ben Tama, CP News. Thank you for listening.
