AP News, I'm Ben Thomas. Campus protests of the war in Gaza continue across the country. More arrests at the University of Texas, while at New York's Columbia University. Student protesters are ignoring an ultimatum to leave their encampment or face suspension. Julie Walker has more on Columbia's history with protests. April 2024, Columbia University students protest the Israel Hamas War. April 1968, it was the Vietnam War. Columbia professors have been stopping by the encampment to support their students. In an interview with the AP last week, Professor Farrah Griffin said they have a right to protest what they consider injustice. We promise that it would not happen on our watch. You know, I think these young people believed us when we said never again. Students here and around the country demanding their schools divest from Israel to stop the war in Gaza. They're saying not on our watch. In '68, Columbia brought in police, 700 arrests were made, many violent. They also brought in police this time, making 100 arrests, but have since promised not to and to negotiate. Julie Walker, New York. The U.S. is stepping up pressure for a ceasefire deal in Gaza. Hamas officials are in Egypt to discuss the new proposal. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's urging them to accept, calling it "extraordinarily generous." Police in North Carolina say several officers trying to serve a warrant on a home in Charlotte were struck by gunfire, and a suspect has been found dead multiple victims taking to hospitals. And Margie Zarletta reports Britney Spears and her father have reached a settlement over her conservatorship. The dispute between Britney Spears and her father, Jamie Spears, was set to go to trial next month and could have exposed a lot of embarrassing details. Although the conservatorship ended more than two years ago, there were still issues involving attorney fees and what Britney Spears' lawyer Matthew Rosengartz said was financial malfeasance by her father. Rosengartz says Britney Spears' freedom is now complete. I'm Margie Zarletta. This is AP News. In the NHL, one team threw to round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Our Temi Panerin's power play goal of 321 of the third period snapped at two all-tie, and the Rangers went on to beat the Capitals 4 to 2 to complete a four-game series sweep of their opening round playoff series. Head coach Peter Lavielette says his team played their best hockey in the final period. Thought we played a real smart, hard third period. It was clearly our best period of the night, and got the big power play goal to go ahead. But then defensively, I thought we locked it down really good in the third. Mika's and Batajat had two assists for the blue shirts. Jack Roslavik added an empty net goal late to seal the win.
