80 News. I'm Ben Thomas. Arizona's abortion ban has been wiped off the books. Norman Hall reports. Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs has relegated a Civil War era ban on most abortions to the past by signing a repeal bill. Our action to repeal this 1864 ban was to keep us from going backwards, to keep us from stepping into the past. Hobbs says the repeal is just the beginning of a fight to protect reproductive health care in Arizona. But the repeal may not take effect until 90 days after the end of the legislative session in June or July. The abortion rights advocates hope a court will step in to prevent that outcome. Hobbs said the ban was passed by 27 men before Arizona was even a state at a time when America was at war about the right to own slaves. An attack on freedom is simply that it's an attack on freedom. I Norman Hall. Hamas says it's sending a delegation to Egypt to continue talks on a ceasefire with Israel. A key question whether Israel can accept an end to the war without reaching its stated goal of destroying Hamas. Meantime, the number of arrests on college campuses at protests over the war in Gaza continues to grow. The sound of protesters chanting at UCLA where more than 200 people were zip tied and taken away by police. The Associated Press has tallied arrest at 35 schools since the protest began at Columbia University and that number stands at 2000. Some of the campus protests popping up over the last two weeks have led to agreements with administrators to consider the protesters demands. More often though, they have led to arrests after demonstrators refused to disperse or vandalize property. I'm Shelley Atler.
