AP News, I'm Ed Donahue, and AP Talley shows at least 2,000 arrests have been made around the country at pro-Palestinian protests to college campuses. The latest was overnight. Two hundred people were arrested at UCLA. At the White House, President Biden says this is putting to the test two American principles. The first is the right to free speech and for people to peacefully assemble and make their voices heard. The second is the rule of law. Both must be upheld. The President says the U.S. is not a country that squashes dissent, but dissent must never lead to disorder. The President is lumping two vital partners with a pair of adversaries as he tries to explain their economic troubles. At a fundraiser yesterday, the President said the U.S. is thriving because it welcomes immigrants. But why are Japan, India, China, and Russia having economic issues? He says because they're xenophobic and don't want immigrants. What exactly did he mean? The President was very clear, and I think that's why we're asking you. Press Secretary Karim Jean-Pierre and national security spokesman John Kirby say he was making a broader point. The United States is a nation of immigrants. The remarks came within a year of the President hosting the leaders of both India and Japan for lavish state visits. Prime Minister Modi, welcome back to the White House.
