Uno goyo latino, born and raised in Sacramento, California. Peruso raises y en en de wada la Cara Jalisco, Mexico. He is the first ever Latina to become the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services with you. Secretary Javier Besserra. Y e merido. Upla ser es taraki esa. I got to tell you, when you could say both in English and Spanish, it's very special. Yeah, no. We love celebrating our roots, no staraises, but also we're proud Americans. And we love enjoying both of our cultures. You know, and that's a beautiful thing. And speaking of that, Secretary Besserra, your story is beyond inspiring. You know, coming from your mom who's an immigrant in the wild. I know your dad was born in the States. But raised in Tijuana, Baja California. It's very similar to many of our stories, right? Growing up in an apartment with three sisters. I mean, using the bathroom must have been tough. Try to get in there, but it's very inspiring. And now becoming North. We were Latino as the first ever United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. Can you please tell us in summary a little bit about your journey? And what exactly does your job entail? You know, so the journey is it's very typical for most migrant families. You know, you watch your parents work hard every day. We are what my sisters and I were what we call latchkey kids. In other words, kids who came home, parents were not there because they were still working. And you just, you know, you take care of yourself. Make sure you don't get yourself any trouble and you just keep going. I didn't know how to get to college because my parents had never gone there. But I got there and my three sisters and I either had college, military. And so the route to success came from parents who just just worked very hard. And today, now I've got three daughters, they've all done really well in college. It's a congratulations. You know what it is? It's es uno ruyo. Es uno ruyo porque nos déron algo nuestros padres. Yes. Goutre en la sembozado anos rocicos. Glaro. It's a legacy. That's it. That work ethic. And what a beautiful legacy. Que vino en está cuultura, gente tantra vajador a no como y mi grandes. That's something that we all have in common. You said you have three daughters? Three daughters. Girl, that as well. Right here. Oh, all the way. It's awesome, right? Oh, it's the best. For sure. For the kisses for the rest of your life. For the rest of our life. I love it. You know, even though mom gets a little jealous sometimes. Oh, no, no, no. She shares in it. I love it. You know, the I always tell folks, I got four women in my life and I'm blessed. And then to that, um, in about 2021, I believe is when you became from becoming a attorney general here in California. You went out to be the United States secretary of health and services. Yeah, in that time, I remember President Biden was sending home those COVID tests by any chance you being Latino. We're like, if he's sending home those COVID tests, maybe we should send home some weeks. Bapodu, some cool. We have some blankets with a tiger on it, you know, for every home to help out the health crisis. Did it ever cross your mind? You might have gotten a few more votes. If you had done some Bapodu, you know, it solves everything, right? Everybody gets it. I love that. Vic's vapor of everybody uses it. Yeah, for sure. It's like broken leg. He's my portal. Yeah. Um, the secretary said right now our familias are feeling a lot of financial pressure. As you just mentioned with your parents, you know, at times working two jobs and not coming home until late, a lot of that is still going on today. What are you in your team and this administration running out doing to help lower the costs in health care when it comes to. Insurance and also medication. The thing that I hope people are beginning to see and hear about is the fact that we're lowering the price of prescription drugs because that's what eats up so much of the money in our pockets, right? The drugs seem to continue to increase in price and we don't have any choice because if the doctor said you need this medication to stay healthy to be well, you got to take it. And so we're lowering the cost. The one drug that most people hear about a lot is insulin. Yes. Today, insulin instead of costing two, three hundred dollars every month for the folks on Medicare is now $35 a month. Amazing stuff, especially since so many of our family members on Medicare are also on a fixed income with Social Security. And so it is a godsend for a lot of these folks, but it's going to continue because right now I'm in the process with my team at HHS of negotiating. To get to lower the price of the 10 most expensive drugs in the Medicare program. These are 10 drugs that have cost us forty six billion dollars in one year. Wow, one year in one year billion with a B billion with a B and so they're high priced. Yeah, but they're very essential. Yeah. And so we have to our people need them. Right. So we're going to try to do is negotiate to bring down the cost because this year because of President Biden's efforts and the passage of a law. His inflation reduction act. Now we have the authority to try to negotiate. This is the first time before we had accept whatever price the drug companies wanted to charge. Now we can negotiate. Yeah, my parents rest in peace. They had Medicare and the coverage was absolutely amazing. You know, A and B, meaning medication, doctor visits, also the hospital and then, you know, we were able to get supplemental health insurance, et cetera. And so that coverage is really, really, truly even better than some PPOs out there, you know, but I would like to ask also, you know, a lot of our listeners are young, 18 to 25 or, you know, 29 to 30. And there's that little break in between your under your parents insurance. Yep. And then you're kind of like on your own in limbo. You know, what can you recommend for the younger generation in regards to health insurance and coverage? And you got to remember one thing, Obamacare, which passed in 2010, which is now in place and tens of millions of Americans count on it. But before Obamacare passed in 2010, once you turned 19, 18, 19, you could no longer stay on the health insurance coverage of your parents. Right. Obamacare changed that. The law said, no, no, no, a young person can stay on their parents coverage until the age of 26. And my youngest is now 26. So our three daughters had the fortune of being on our coverage until they needed it until the age of 26. A lot of younger Americans now can stay until 26. But the thing is, once you turn 27, what happens? And for a lot of families today, Obamacare is the choice. A lot of these young folks look at the Affordable Care Act and the insurance plans and it's working. So today we've set a record. We have more than 21 million Americans who have their health insurance through Obamacare. Who's the marketplace? That is awesome. Thank you for that. Yeah, because, you know, we Latinos, we like to stay at home as long as we can. And you know what, some of his parents, we like it when you say hello. Yes, especially his girl, Dad. Exactly. In AT&T, Latinos, Las Mejores, Alfredas, and Todos, Maestros, smartphones, at Todos. Let's go just to the end. At Todos. Alos que nunca tran funder. Y alos que tran funder, cartera. Alos que cetera dando semanas en contestar. Y alos que contesta con nota zebos et de ernes. Alos, moebos, clientes, y alos, sexy stentes. KeyBank opens doors. KeyBank member FDIC. Last but not least, unfortunately, anxiety and depression is at an all-time high, especially because of what we went through in the pandemic, especially our young Latinos, feeling a lot of the financial pressure, just the things we're going on with social media right now and so on and so forth. We were blessed enough to be chosen on the Shaboys show as one of the shows to help promote the new suicide in crisis hotline. Excellent. 988. Excellent. Secretary Vasirak, can you please tell us more about the 988 hotline? President Biden made it possible for us to launch 988 a year and a half ago. And I will... actually almost two years ago now. And what I will tell you is this, in the first 18 months, about 8 and a half million Americans called, texted, they chatted because they were hurting and it's absolutely been working. So today people know if they reach out through 988. It's like 911, but for mental health crises, when you need help, when you've run out of options, and it's working and people now are turning to 988 so they can find out where to go to get some help. But it would not have been possible had the president not made more than a billion dollar investment to make sure 988 could go national. Because you don't want it just in California or just in New York. You want every place in the country to have access. And 988 is working that way. Thank God the president believed that it was important because we saw after COVID, how important it was to reach out to folks. No more of this. I remember when I was young. I want that day. I want that day. Or, or, or, or, or, or, or, or, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and - So you call, they pick up, or you can text 980. So thank you very much.
