The Left Wing Back Podcast

Why as a Liam McCarthy County are we being short changed with TV Coverage? What is it like further down?

With two games played in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship, Carlow have enjoyed a grand total of approximately 3 minutes of action on The Sunday Game highlights show.

It's been a pet hate for years in the county and this year it has become a major talking point again.

As bad as this is, how does Carlow man Peter Fortune feel?

Peter is captaining the Louth Senior Hurlers this year and just a couple of months ago he appeared on RTE's League Sunday to chat about the landscape of Hurling and discussed what can be done to improve it.

We discuss all of this here.

We also chat Carlow v Kilkenny which does have GAA GO coverage this weekend (finally something at long last) and weekend results from Camogie, Ladies Football and Minor Hurling are given also.

Please follow us on Spotify and Apple, share our content on Social Media and feel free to contact us as always by DM or email info@leftwingback.com

[Music] Hello and welcome along to the latest edition of the left wing back podcast. We had fantastic feedback on our previous interview with Tommy Bogey. We want to say thanks to Tommy again for giving up his time. Really enjoyable piece so if you haven't listened to that don't forget to check out leftwingback.com where all our episodes are from this year so far. We have had some fantastic feature conversations on what Michael Walsh, Brian Kelly, Johnny Neven loads of them are up there and available on leftwingback.com and of course on Spotify and on Apple as well where you can hit the like or follow button and if you share our content that's very much appreciated also and thanks to those who have been touched on this regarding the feedback this year it has been very very good indeed. So we really do appreciate that. We are here of course as always in association with chorus boards, arts bars, PFT travel, part of home photography, Morley's Bar and Ballomorphy, railway limited, poet of motors and the Talbot Hotel in Carlo. Coming up a little bit later on in the program we have a fantastic feature line conversation with Peter Forge and Peter Wooder featured on the podcast on a couple of occasions before St. Mullinsman exiled in loud. Playing his club part with St. Feckens but he's a loud singer, Harlan Captain this year. He talks to us about coverage or lack thereof at a particular level and we think we have a bad here in Carlo with poorly served coverage from a national level of what we're doing at Lee McCarty level at the minute but this is a bit of an eye-opener when you see what's happening a little bit further down into John Madonna, Chris Steering, Nicki Racker, Laurie Mar, etc. So there is some really good insights we got from that so we do hope you stick around for it and in the meantime a few results to go through so the Carlo ladies footballers have qualified for another final this time the Lancer Junior final they had a big win over to Kenny at the weekend. I did not play it loud I should say in a couple of weeks time. The Carlo Intermedia Komogi team lost out to Dublin in the Lancer Championship at the weekend so that's them. Out of that last week 114 to 14 points and for a full wrap-up on all of the Komogi and Lady Scary Football action we have some stuff up on left him back.com but if you check out the social media accounts for the Carlo Komogi page and the Lady Scary Football page they're on Instagram, they're on Facebook and they are on Twitter and so are we at the left-wing back. Also the weekend, Carlo Winterhorn and team were in action against Wicklot at a good win there so that puts them into the parallel line final against Antram this weekend and again check out Carlo Jay at our overall fixtures and for the official confirmation on that one we don't have it at the minute at their time of recording. So big weekend coming up for Carlo of course they are taking on Kenny in the what's calling park on Saturday Ripperhorn encounter. That one actually is on GAGO and we will talk about this in our upcoming conversation here with Peter Fortune so we wish all our teams the very best look this coming weekend and indeed over the next couple of weeks and for now we're going to hear from Mr Peter Fortune. You're listening to the left-wing back podcast and on today's episode I am joined by a familiar voice and a familiar face to the left-wing back podcast Mr Peter Fortune and you're very welcome. Are you a Carlo man now or a loud man considering your captain at Orton? Oh jeez you put me on the spot right to start anyway. I suppose I always have a grow up for same others in Carlo and it's always my home but I'm definitely an adopted loud man at this stage only I thought that way. Well the captain see in all seriousness that must be an awful lot here. Yeah look it's a huge honor. I suppose since I got up here I've managed Captain Defekins for four years now and I've captain loud now this year and was playing kind of a leadership role a year before and so it was a huge honor anytime a manager kind of comes to you and says I want you to represent me on the field as a leader so you know anytime that happens it's a credit to you and and this was what you're doing but I like to think that I do bring that leadership to the group and to the panel and so it's not something actually when I was younger and that's something I ever really crossed my mind or something I ever really looked for or wanted but so when I look back on my career I was lucky enough to play under some brilliant natural captains but leaders in Saint Mullins and definitely definitely something that I probably take a little bit from from each of them and try and replicate myself. Good stuff and for all the leadership qualities that you bring on the field and lead in the dressing room you've been equally as impressive and it's was as vocal off the field and obviously not that you'd always want to be in that position but I guess maybe the tail end of last year I think it was there was all kinds of stuff going around that maybe like of loud and counties and maybe Nicaragua, Loury Marlevolent and I don't know the apostrophe tip in the Christian ring that there was talk that there was a possibility of being up in Leholland the League if memory serves me correct at this point and you made a lot of noise about that and you came together and it was really really great to see um how did that feel at the time and where are things at now like whatever what as a six seven months down the line Peter? Yeah it was look um it was a very difficult period as a hurler as you said you know you're you're always wanting to do you're talking on the pitch you know that's what what you're told is young age at a young age you know do your chatting on the pitch but as well that we were thrust into into a position where look it was either fight your corner or this this proposal was going to be passed and I suppose since then I suppose you know what the proposal was withdrawn at Central Council which was you know true true the support of the GBA GPA and I suppose others not just captains but GPA reps as well and coming together and I suppose voicing our concerns and suppose people like yourself you know really getting behind it and support and then driving it you know to get the word out there because you know I know it's up we're going to come on to later on but I suppose the lack of information around the game at this level and you know it was a similar thing with this proposal you know it was in place for a while before I suppose it was really nationally known what what was actually going to happen so suppose look as I've said before post the proposal you kind of end up getting stuck into into the league and into the championship and you know we probably haven't really got the chance to sit back and actually reflect on it and look back and and see where we are as a as a collective as a group and I suppose in our own county and loud you know we ratified a hard on development committee which are meeting you know every couple of weeks and we're trying to put together a development plan at the minute that we're hoping to launch in the summer to kind of you know put in place progression steps on how to grow the game up here and and we're trying to take from other counties like to be honest I referenced Carol an awful lot in these meetings because and some of the stuff that's going on down below to grow the game down there is brilliant and you're starting to see you know you're starting to see more crowds coming out for the Harlers which they absolutely deserve you know you've seen their last weekend you know a very unlucky goal goes in and other than that like they were there they're outs maybe pippin doubling you know and um you know it's a difficult position to be in because probably the people who as you said are trying to do the hurdle on the pitch are also trying to do a lot of the work off the pitch and you know balancing that is a challenge but you know there's some great hurting people up here that they are willing to give so much time to to make sure this game grows yeah good stuff and it is great to hear and looking at it suppose I did some homework on population figures and loud has this thing for being that the smallest county of population was as far from it it's now grown massively and I don't know how much of a tune the Harlan kind of fraternity have kind of got over that they would like yourself maybe going up and and a few others but what we have seen I suppose is well unfortunately terrible house prices in Dublin but the next closest thing is maybe or somewhere kind of gloss into layer mead and obviously that would be one of those two so you're getting people that are looking to obviously commute to work and they might join the local J club and I'm guessing that's obviously probably something to do with the the increase in population to tie that in with Harlan I guess I mean it's something that you've kind of noticed is there kind of generation swings where there's people from down the country after moving up and then there are kids are now starting to play and overall you think how much of a growth are you seeing on the ground maybe even through the thickens or whatever of people playing the game now yeah well look um I have to say the work that's going on in the tree clubs themselves is is immense and you know especially I suppose I can only really reference the feckens mostly myself but and you know the feckens very much considers itself a strong dual club at this stage you know we've a senior Harlan team after doing tree in a row and we have a senior football team who've retained or seen your status the last few years and are hoping to drive on you know and elevate that further so at underage level you know we're seeing numbers increase and I suppose it's still always a challenge you know you know yourself playing two sports and clashes and you know training this evening that evening and parents and trying to get them there all the time can be difficult but um yeah look I suppose like what you're referencing there probably wanted the biggest growth in loud at the minute is that you know the size of drought as a town and it doesn't actually have a Harlan club and the wolf tones recently have have started at a young age again and are trying to you know develop over the next few years and keep that coming on and I suppose as a Harlan fraternity up here we've claimed the notice that and you know sport is inherently protect your own and develop your own and you know look after your own we've really kind of tried to break down those rock walls over the last few months and kind of said look for this to really grow it's going to take everyone joining in together and everyone working together and the likes of the feckens being close to the wolf tones there and draw the other saying well actually look we're going to come we're going to give you a dig out we're going to help this club get off the ground gotcha and look hopefully all that kind of stays moving in right direction it's good to hear that that's kind of community um I'm not calling it the right thing what I think it was along the lines of committee that you said was put together they're working on on kind of driving things on I did see a lovely photograph obviously we did a little piece with Kevin Mac and again a shout out to Kevin for allowing us to well this was he never choice I just pulled the trigger on well he didn't complain or out and afterwards it was nice to capture it and he got the whole thing that I was trying to do like stay singing the autographs and talk to me at the same time point being up he wasn't alone in that at the weekend like a lovely photo emerging social media showed a feckens page to think of you doing the same you're signing autographs for a lot of the feckens kids I think after the loud game possibly last was the last week or week before but before yeah unbelievable I mean that must be a pinch me moment and a real sign of progress surely yeah look it is and and I suppose it's something that we often see happening in the other codes you know like we often see the kids you know we had to meet the players they opened the dock and had to start the year and it was very you know football dominated kids coming in wanting to see the footballers but then like as I always say for a lot of these children Harlan might not have actually been accessible or you know visible to them and so while we started over the last couple of weeks as part of the Harlan Development Committee was you know getting the kids into play a half time in the Nikki Racker games and so the first day we had the feckens and not bridge on their leavens playing and last week we had the menina and not bridge on their nines playing and you know again you can just see as I always say I think coming from a teaching background you know kids are like sponges and once they were in that atmosphere and you know they're they just absolutely adored it and you know one thing we took from Carlos especially was the the jersey competition which Carlos have been doing and we tried to replicate that ourselves and so it was one of the barriers that we've seen in loud is actually you know Harlan's actually you know you can throw a football out between 30 lads and they can you know they can all start playing but to actually for a child they want to try Harlan to get a Harlan it's quite difficult so a man named Pat Foley and kindergarten actually sponsored a couple of brainwashed Harlan's for us to give out for the prize as well and you know so we were able to send two children home with a brand new loud jersey and a brand new Harlan grip and a whole new mindset towards Harlan and you know those kids coming out to me and I know I went back into the huddle after and the lads are all slagging me going oh here's the super sound you know like I like I often reference my own childhood I remember running out to get you know talk to Pat Foley on the pitch and he was my next-door neighbor you know but it was that it was the atmosphere that created that it wasn't who he was it was it was say Mun's jersey made him bigger than than what he was and and I suppose that's what we're trying to replicate up here is what we're trying to say we have to put the prestige on being a loud Harlan ourselves and we have to represent ourselves with with prestige and honor and really appreciate what the opportunity we have to play into county Harlan went loud and that can only filter down if somebody sees you know the loud senior Harlan captain myself or Andrew Smith and you know that's the way we're carrying ourselves well then the younger lives on the panel are soon going to fall in behind that and then the under 20s who might be coming might fall in under that and all of a sudden it's filtering the whole way down where a 10-year-old is going actually I want to play hard and flat that's a goal I have and and that that's something I really want to change up here is is the perception of you know like I view myself as an inter-county harler when I go to any the GPA events I could sit beside anyone I don't feel any less than anyone else because you know I represent my county and I I'm an inter-county player and I want everyone who puts on a Harlan jersey flat to feel that when they do it yes I've made it I'm an inter-county player now more power to you and do you know what actually resonates with me I remember look a lot of this is largely tongue-in-cheek but as a kid listening to it it probably does have a bit of an effect on it my mum is from Cork and actually it's funnily enough the part of Cork is from isn't exactly a Harlan stronghold they haven't produced like money fantastic senior in the county players right and it's a smaller place called killer volen just to say my love what meronations always just said if you're growing up Carol Ashwale then Oberhornen how would they know about football and I'm not trying to suggest that that's the case for the corn crop of young kids if they go somewhere and have relations in other counties especially Harlan ones what would they know sort of a thing but it just does kind of do something in that though I think fairness and all is the common way you've been from your relations and all is the bit of stake it does kind of sit in your mind a little bit and probably give you a false perception and to hear you kind of come out from that particular angle that's what they kind of need to be hearing and we would have heard that from our Johnny Evans probably our Brendan Haynes and and all these guys but the problem is I suppose you don't start to believe it until you can see in front or two ways and as you say given away the jerseys and the horrors and a little sighting on that to have Carol as the the kind of benchmark to take an idea from and you was in that probably is a big compliment to where Carol is at currently as well that you know and a fierce advantage that you can see from both sides I don't particularly have a question but I'm just putting out that as a narrative I don't know if you've any thoughts on any of it yeah look I suppose I've experienced to myself I played a lot of soccer and if you can he growing up and I was often told you know we'd be having the debates about Harlan the dress movement I was often told you know maybe Austrian or from Carolina again I saw it like you said it was always me mates trying to annoy me or wind me up but it does and you know or sometimes up here you get you get to do loud even have a Harlan team is the is the joke that sometimes gets thrown out there and I suppose yeah look I was answered it seriously I said yeah we do and we trained as much as any other inter-county team in the country we're doing our essence you know I was actually listening to your your your podcast with Tommy Bogey there and talking about the you know the kind of the introduction of S&C and all that and kind of thinking back to that side of the game and and you know it's definitely definitely something that like I would say to anyone I said we're doing everything that every other team is doing and we're constantly striving to get that little bit better and I suppose if we can I always say like hopefully I'll have many more years playing but when when I'm not playing anymore I want to be able to look back and say I left the place that I was in a better position and I left the game that I was loved in a better position and and I think that if we can keep driving and striving and doing that we have an opportunity to change that for the next generation and I suppose that that's a big thing I look at the young hurlers in the feckens at the minute especially and I think you know I talk to a lot of the lads who who are senior players now and they talk about kind of their frustrations at juvenile level with lack of games and and things like that and and a big thing I have is that you know I don't want you know if that's happening there's there's lads there saying that this has happened to them in the past and it affected their careers I want to make sure that those generations don't go through those things as well and we try and implement a plan now to make sure those kids are hurling anyone who wants to pick up a hurling again like as someone said to be wanting to be sure you can't make everyone want to hurling I said no you can't put the ones that want that we want to get them hurling as much as we possibly can yeah to give them the opportunity and for it to be visible and they are front of them but okay well oh look this is this is here I can I can actually do this the same as maybe the soccer club is there a soccer ball is on the ground or a I don't need a size five or a size four in their case whatever it may be you know and the other thing and not to sound patronizing or condescending with the next two points that I'm going to make like I know there's always ways okay to you you want to be winning raw competitors you want to win but if you people go into games they want to see competitive first of all right and I think bar one of those games you were largely competitive like you're pipped against our math uh may only be taken for it is a dot right but does it really I'm not going to say it doesn't really matter because of course it does you want to get the findings and stuff but to see from a kid's point of view to see you there to see maybe a platform that they can move on to uh that will be something that I would be looking at feel free to agree or discrete second part and this especially isn't mean I don't mean to be condescending or patronizing but I think you're again with Calvin with Sean and TZ Carter in the league going back whenever was a couple of ones back and genuinely in a comatist with the greatest respect I could not get over this that everything was a really really good to watch and that was from guys that are exiled like homegrown players that are like really really good doesn't have to be a case where a Peter Fortuna has to go for a can of smara has to go up to Calvin or over to guessing the first homegrown players on the ground that are fantastic and well able to play and there isn't a sub point to that now common but those are two more observations that I have seen and I suppose you're probably blown the face with the latter in particular uh come see it's like it's pretty good standard here like yeah yeah 100% look um this was on the first point yeah look um I suppose we're up in in Nikki record now um you know we retain our stat slash year and look that's the goal probably for this year unfortunately to to look up the table you know it can be a bit naive at start here maybe to go all we're going to go from just staying up last year to to win it but you know we we feel like we're we're edging towards those teams all the time so you know like you said there you know like probably very unfortunate not to be our mom is to lay a penalty when when the game was level and you know I just like we've all played one those games or just doesn't go your way and but yeah like we played Mayo last year in Darver and probably physically and fitness wise we felt like well personally I felt like I was probably off that standard a little bit whereas this year playing them I didn't feel that even though they're probably still a superior team and and beat us last weekend you know I felt as a hurler I was closer to them than I was maybe the previous year so you can see that development in lads and lads are developing all the time but on your second point there yeah I think I think that's the biggest one is like you know you're talking about their like local hurlers there but like one the clips that went viral from that and that cabin game was Darren gig and sideline cut and and you know he's a man in a man there and he's you know growing up and man in a you know represented loud the whole way up and uh you know you're you're looking at something like that and you're thinking like that's how that sideline hit by Joe canning is on the Sunday game that weekend and it's it's referenced and it's shown and it's in the highlights package for you know for for 10 15 years and you're going like all these all these moments that are you know we're watching on the telly all the time I look at my fiance would would agree now I've probably watched too much hurling when I saw the telly would probably be talking about how we couldn't see the car look at him last again but she was glad but um yeah like look these moments are happening our games all the time and and it it is a very good standard of hurling and as you said it is very competitive like you know I know that in the division uh tree bee in the first week I think they had two draws out of the tree games you know so everything is going down to the melting pot and one thing about our levels is every game matters so much to those teams because there is no you know there is no um kind of off game or taking a handy or or kind of you will rest a few this week like every game is do or that you lose a game you're in trouble or allegation or you win it you win a big game like last year we managed to turn Ross coming over and Ross coming and all of a sudden we were looking up the table and we were thinking maybe we could possibly reach a Nick you accurate finally if we Nick and another result here or there but yeah look it's it's something that I would say like as people would often say to me like about hurling carlo and just like you know a very high standard of hurling or lens or club championship but like you know there's there's hurlers that I faced in that and then there's hurlers that faced Nicky racker then you know they're just as good as each other and it's just that those people aren't known or those people aren't seen which brings me on to this particular topic and I forced the gotten touched with you while watching the Sunday game obviously on Sunday night and the blood was boiling to say at least because I think someone has actually done a rough count on the amount of time that I think that carlo have got over the two games off our end lane mccarty with the got away and doubling counters think it was somewhere like three minutes and even the wanda the late which was seriously competitive as you said was only poke a ball in a minute 27 or something I think the segment was was time that and it was also the only game that didn't have wider GA go or RTE coverage last week and I'm like okay I agree but that's that's pretty annoying like you know what I mean but to further that then and we'd obviously kind of tried to set this up over the past couple of days on this morning I sat down to watch this new offer and that GA go have freely available and it's under spot but it's under able to there's two shows actually there's a ratify job which is for what you call it county footballers very much inspired by stick to football and there's an analysis program and on the football side analysis one Dean Rock and Aaron Kernan I think do it and then the Horland's like Noel Connors and James Hickey do it and again I was thinking right okay well basically they take a couple of topics and and look at video analysis session and I was like right there probably will take a trip here surely they will take it and literally every game apart from carloan over room was used to take a statement from and like I think to myself is it the smaller minded thing ah fakin jizz rose winged or something and they think to me say well no hon hon hon here for a second like we are a Lee McCarty county now Dublin are also a Lee McCarty county and have been for some time for what it's worth and that even further the whole thing in my mind as little as they might think of carlo they've never not caught something of Dublin and it seems that every team that and got a bit a week before as well seems that everything that carloan will be playing I don't know how they're going to get much hop and the one game that GA go do elect to show then obviously is to be any one which like we all know the call again to any ones are the ones most likely to aren't going to be as competitive as the other three I've wanted to have this run for quite some time and I'm really sorry you're on the other end of it but it's horribly frustrating or to look at that from a carlo point of view and then I have genuine empathy and sympathy for yourself and counties at Nikki Bracker level like there's me giving over the minute 27 seconds she's you take the seven seconds or a 27 second I would admit it 27 the world is badly divided in this Harlan circle and I just don't know I'm really frustrated and I don't know if you've any thoughts on it or any rationale joke and offer up yeah well look I suppose as a carlo supporter outside the county you know we were heard as well latte and it just wasn't viable to get down and to the Dublin game and like hadn't really looked into it myself and during the week just presumed it was going to be available on GA go to be honest and and we've found myself now again I love listening to the coverage on KCLR and it's always very pro carlo it's a it really does get you going you feel like you're in the ground there but yeah like it was very I was very frustrated on on on Saturday couldn't watch the game like to be honest and you know like it's a it's a huge honor for those lads to be playing at that level and and for themselves to be able to go back and and you know I know it would have been very disappointed watching the back but to be able to go back and kind of watch that game themselves and you know I suppose here they're now I mean you know mentioned and things like that I know they wouldn't admit that because you know you're your folks and on the next day but if there is a prestige in that and like again to be able to put that on you know I often say like with with the kids in that in school like for any one of those lads who are teachers or something to be able to throw on a little bit at game and show look here's the car scene hurdle team and you know and then you're sitting down as you said Sunday evening and you're going well hopefully now you know there'll be a little bit of analysis on it here or you know let's just flag a few the lads like to be honest look we we know the Dublin Herlers you know and and they will get their their day on the telly and mention in apple you know let's really highlight a few of our lads here and and try and and give Carlo a boost there and I think that's one of my biggest gripes at the minute with the promotion of games is that you know I do think you can use the strong to promote the week a lot more and like you said there you know putting putting that game on the same pedestal as Galway and click any because technically it is it's the same competition it's the same round it's the same level it's the same everything apart from how it's represented and how it's shown this is the very thing and we saw Carlo on awfully last year probably the greatest game of the year a lot of new to saying that it's not just a Carlo man saying it and then they get you on the TV which you perform very well on obviously on league Sunday probably go two months ago I know maybe it's over to them once ago but roughly speaking it was and I think to myself why bring you on and bring off auction on if they're not going to follow true on basic things they've given out the results now from what I've seen and I've opened the correction over the past couple of weeks obviously our lads have got minimal coverage they've shown a little bit of the job I don't know which isn't improvement it's it is a little bit but after that there is not I don't know is it a reluctance the fact of the matter is there is no result shown for any other tier that you can see so far and I am open to correction on that is that correct okay game as far as I can see anyway I haven't seen it anywhere myself um or the honor tonight you were on it or you know or division on the night you were on it they weren't no that's kind of playing the first of like yeah look I suppose myself reflecting on it the one thing you know because getting lots of lads are patting you on the back and they're saying that was great and I suppose the one line I had for everyone is it lonely be great if if something comes of it you know I wasn't going up there to you know I look I won't lie yeah as it was an incredible experience to go on the Sunday game and to say we're on the Sunday game and sit in the studio and and you know to have that experience I know I always have that experience but I suppose for me personally my biggest thing is that would become a negative experience for me if something some change or some you know it doesn't come from it and at the minute you know there hasn't been any change from it and I suppose look the world does move on and and you'll see you know you'll see people put up things about promoting the game and and often you know the comments are and I know you don't want to judge things off social media or things will often the comments are you know people don't want to watch that or or you know this that and the other but again until they watch it you know it it's hard to say that that they couldn't watch a game like that again like you're saying there like that game last year was was unbelievable you know like it was a real testament and I've actually found over the last few years myself maybe more so because Carlo were at that level but I found some of the Joe McDonough games or some of the best games not just that final but overall I found myself watching even games that you know say for example Westme could be playing a carry and it could affect how you know the table was going to be for Carlo and I trod on something if it was being streamed you know like it's an incredible standard of hurling and and you know you go down below that again you've got some brilliant teams there of Chrissy Ring and come down to Ireland at Nicki Racker and you've got some great games and you know you're just crying out for just you know like unfortunately we can't elevate any higher than we can like we can do all these jersey competitions and invite the kids in and you know that will grow it internally as much as it can but you know to elevate that little bit higher like you know to take loud as an example over the last few years the footballers have seen you know very good success you know on the pitch reach reach in two lesser finals all you kids in school that would never have mentioned Gaelic to me telling me that they were at the games you know at the weekend or last weekend we had a young fella from our school who got to play a halftime in Croak Park and all the kids went up to to see him playing you know it's it's just success breed success and without elevating the level to where it can be successful that needs a push from from the higher ups we we can't do that we we can't set up a streaming service and say we're going to show a loud Nicki Racker games or you know it needs someone to come in and take the chance on it and say like you see Teethi Carter there you know I'm fair instead of now they work they work they they show that game and they even come down and they interview Darren Gigg and after in our training and you know took a little snippets from it and show on that and like you said they're showing some of the Joe Mack games this year on the Sunday game that's all to start but it has to be a start you know it has to look forward you know it can't just be this thing happened let's let's look at it now and let let's see because it's hard for a while yeah yeah exactly yeah look we we did our job or we did we did a little bit you know it has it has to be it has to be something tangible that we can actually like you know we're talking with development plans in our own county how about a media development plan of how do we grow the game you know digitally at these levels how do we get it in front of more people again I don't have the answers I'm not I'm not pulling up an Instagram post is about as far as I get with the media but and you know I really think like as you said they're about to standard and and there's you like someone really passionate hurling football man you see those little snippets and you even then go geez you know there's a good standard there and it catches your interest it only has to catch a couple of people that might watch it and then more watch it and more watch it that's the thing and to make the comparison again to what I said in relation to the calvin low game a few months back all you had people pick to me with the same kind of tone in relation to car on off the genre don't it and what's the common owner they saw it they saw a bit of it and they're like geez that was actually really good and that's where the whole thing grows like and look you mentioned TZ Carter there and clover is another fantastic service as you kind of had said there you might keep an eye on maybe a s meter a carry and I don't know how they go about acquiring rights for john adona but if there's a template there well I mean they could interior not saying they should but they could go lower down again or some other streaming company could come in and go lower down so a five-minute highlight package like what they primarily do say for example and like how many games is there in holland in a given weekend yeah that that of course course that's the oval just got you've got a video analyst at all these games and maybe it's like the loud man does it one day and the arm and does it the next day or something like that but that five minutes is there in this course and it's there for everyone to see then that's a start it's a simple idea another thing I was thinking of and I think i asked you this that are there is there a specific podcast writing kind of outside of Lee McCarty and i don't think there is i don't even think there's one for john adona barn you know the counties that are involved are looking at from their own person's perspective but to have that kind of communal thing whereby there is a discussion about their grade as a whole or their competition kind of as a whole i'd love to be able to do it jesus if i could find time to be dangerous right but there is definitely a scope to do that and there is an appetite and it's the same when it comes to football whether it's division four of the football league um talent club will get a little bit of coverage but i i'm thinking time you might see that way enough little bit from a podcast find view as well but all all these things are definitely doable and probably doable at a reasonable cost if i'm not going to say if any cost at all but it can be for an okay budget like you know what i mean i don't know hopefully peter we live in hope as a boycott yeah look definitely they're like they're they're all brilliant ideas and and um i think i think you are seeing i think part of the part of the the problem is is the players aren't known as well you know nationally and you know even like that like like to be fairness like i've went to games since being on the Sunday game and people have stopped me and they've said well done jesus spoke very well and like i'm as i said that night like i'm very conscious that i i got that opportunity by by being a GPA rep not because of it and i don't know on the field or you know but that showed just just i was there for about 10 15 minutes and some people recognize me now at different games that are level have come up and said well done like you're saying they're a small highlights package of you know that that fella score 12 finds for for mayo at the weekend or for man at the weekend or cabinet at the weekend you know like those things do stick in lance's and we're always looking for more information on hurl you know you're always going trying to know more than the lad in the pub and just you don't know about your man that plays up there you know if you see some hurl are you know like and i even see over the last few years like like i have said like the the acknowledgement of some of the carolas has been brilliant to see like i was like i would have had debates with lads in college that i thought mouse was in you know at the top harlers in the country for years and you know before before he was ever really known and and lads would have said like you know oh jeez i don't even know who he is and and now like when i say i'm from carol originally to anyone hurlman his name is or chris's name is instantly put out there you know or do you know marty calvin or chris nolan and i would say all i heard of mouse yeah you know and and that that's shown that just them being in the public sphere a little bit more and just doing what they did like they're not hurting any better than they did you know a couple of years ago only that people can see them playing out and because they can see them playing they're finally getting acknowledged for how brilliant or harder they actually are yeah and mouse's performance i didn't actually speak about too much with tell me bogey the other day i was off the charts and there's a great photo of the soldiers there um going to go ahead and talk about one of about four or five i would say i think chris chromey might have been in the area for a few of them as well and that's not an easy thing to do to go up over him and catch a ball john nolan and the other wing legways uh super forward john yeah yeah and he got he got to go to a tree kind of like that kind of qup over lovely one i can't these raw things that we love to be able to see because there's scores of the highest caliber and and quality is such a well i mean you know another thing that just has come to me i suppose is the amount of games that carolo were shown on tv when we were growing up like we're in around the same large edge and you can really count it unfortunately one of them was christuring final answer when we got absolutely murdered and another one of the things was the football game when limerick you know about you where we also got murdered um but like there's a couple of games it was sort of a handful maybe in a decade i was growing up and what impression does that leave and now here we are and it seems like it's kind of the same thing last thing on it before i um move on to something a little bit more positive and before we finish up like the top voices in hernan so don't look as a lot to say for myself some of it's good and some of it's bad and that's what the whole thing about sundry is about the green will disagree and the thing that strikes me and it's it's kind of as follows and it was put me by one of our contributors has put very well does he want more hernan or does he want more elite hernan i'd have a question mark over that because the way talton coke was referred to last year um i was a tournament for us around or something i'm like oh okay well like there's one division i would say the same as where it's talton coke technically speaking that may be perceived as a geomethona and holland there's like another few competitions below that so i'd just kind of prick my ears a little bit do these guys want to bring up hernan or do they want to just have more top-tier hernan coverage any thoughts yeah i suppose it's a it's a good debate all right um look i i suppose at our level again as as you said like you know we'd fight for that seven seconds that you mentioned earlier you know and it's hard for me to to sit here and say you know that there's people you know really looking to to elevate our game that way because there's not at the minute you know one thing that really frustrated me this year was there was no um no official launch for the competitions you know normally there's a full shoot in croke park and look again like these are all little small things but they they mean a lot to players and they mean a lot to to us to be able to push that kind of you know like you know like there's a full of film joists are captain last year in croke park with the the trophy and he stands and stands and you know you put that picture in front of anyone who doesn't know what level of hernan or anything and they go oh that looks impressive you know and it's such a simple thing to to get done and the fact that it wasn't you know wasn't done this year you know it's it's those little things that are so frustrated and it's like do we have to fight for the things we actually have now as well instead of you know going where can we push it but yeah a little friend trying to get up here as well and but yeah look and i suppose look we all get caught up in a bit as well like you know as soon as the most of championship comes around it's it's it's probably all i'm you know what when stacking going to be on or or you know i'm i we plan that day that limerick are going to be playing clear and it's it's easy to get caught up in the book i suppose that that's the only thing i'd really encourage like i'd really encourage anyone that that is is at that level you know when when the proposal came out loads of people spoke out and you know really really well and really supported us and i suppose what we need now is it's when when it's current news it's easy to jump on it and throw your two cents in it's it's six set like you said six seven months down the line wouldn't it be brilliant for one those names to come out now and go actually hold on a minute this proposal was there and what's happened since you know so we've been very fortunate part of our harlan development committee martin fogarty has come up to us for a day and you know he's he's a great fella for um harlan development and he's he's actually coming to the club now saturday we have a bit of uh uh uh opening of our community center and uh a celebration night slash dinner dance kind of taking and he's he's coming up to run at i taking the fear of harlan uh seminar for parents and all to get involved and you know like there's someone who spoke out about but didn't take his eye off it and actually has come back to it and said look i want to help change this like and that's what that's what we need you know it's you know it again it's easy everyone could have said the proposal was bad because it was a terrible proposal but it's now when we really need people to come out again and say look you know those those teams you know are still competing at that level but they're still not remote and really at that level how can we change this what can we do you know can we reference reference a team or you know just even bring up like uh you know like even i often think of the the team of the week the ga team of the week like and i think like could there be one for the lower levels and one for the the higher levels you know like like how well does the harder have to play in larry mar and look it does happen every now and again that one sneaks in but how well do they have to play to make that team of the week you know or even look at the look at the all-stars for another example like you have the the all-stars and the joe mac all-stars and then the rest of us go into champion 15 and you know like how well does you know and look obviously you don't want them handed out to anyone but the idea being that you know like a harder from loud going up receiving that award that's something that we can really push to a young lad in our clubs then or you know sell sell the dream that you know this is this is something viable this is something that's you know really prestigious you know this is something you should want to do you know but all those little simple things could really really help harder at this level there's an easy fix to that team of the week too because look after him as you say i think they just get a dice or flip a coin onto a match program and the first name that lands on the troll into it and that's nothing to say that like a lad has played bad or whatever but it's like oh yeah i'm able to scan through into the se and he is hard on the well but they say jack golden for for London there was shooting the lights out while they're throwing him in their eyes for keep the boys below happy that's how it seems to me and i hear suggesting that but that's how it appears that's the optics of it what you would do in that situation what you could do i suppose is get five or six of the local journalists that are covering the themes in the various grades to come together on a sunny evening and say look well these guys have to be in and just foreign consensus on it and that becomes a GA team of the week now that's an easy fix if they really have to be trusting that these guys a lot of them have a media presentation for Croc Park anyway you know so they are trustworthy and do the job that's something that could be done every net of next meeting if you want at all and then you credit for Peter's credit by the point um but no no that's the that's the reality over the hink or so much like that that can be done just to finish off then because you've been really really good and i would hope actually that maybe a lot of people uh in let's say a nicky racker and levers blow if there's people that are in a position to change things Peter that you know some of the stuff is on this and not just because i'm here with you or whatever there's some of the stuff raised is actually quite interesting and there is easy fixes to it from a media perspective that that could be brought forward and improved so i do hope that maybe people will forgive the list and just see is there any sort of um i suppose takeaways that people can get and put into practice but from i'm gonna read back to Carlos Carlos Hawker as i have from Carlos point of view which Kenny Ghem is going to be a difficult one we know that there is a foreign belief that something can be got from no extra game in actual fact funnily enough there seems to be more of a belief that he can get sort of no extra game as opposed to the ancient game in Corrigan Park how do you see a panel over us yeah well look i suppose i think you see in at the weekend Corrigan Park is a difficult place to go for anything and maybe that's where where some of the um maybe that that kind of idea stems from is is you know like i'm really hoping now the boys get a massive crowd in for the extra game you know i think that's vital you know it it really does it really does elevate the team and and you know i'm fairness to the Carlos supporters they've always been you know like especially harder ones that the loyal harder ones you'd nearly better pick them out in the standard of terrorists where they're going to be where they're going to be standing you know and hail rain or snow they won't move from their typical spot so and look i'd like to be honest from from a Carlos perspective you know looking at the i suppose we got to see a good bit of the the anthem and wexford highlights like i i think wexford are people like i think they're they're definitely beable by this carolotene and i don't think carlo will have any fear of them i don't think i i think they they're at that stage now where you you kind of saw it there the weekend even with the start against Dublin and you know there wasn't that hesency that maybe had been there years past when they played those teams of kind that you know are we at this level then order at that level now and you know they've earned the right to be to be there and play at that level so you know she's i i'm i'm really looking for now i am i'm coming down for the wexford game so i'm uh i'm really looking forward to that one now and i'm hoping hoping there's a big big performance in the lads and you know what like you start reeling off you start looking at the wexford names well i'm sure if there was there was someone looking at the carolotene and you start reeling off names the lads that you have to mind there's a lot lads you have to mind there now if you switch to jerseys i don't know if you know you know any different to be honest with you and the same with Dublin carol last week hope you know carolotene is in Dublin carol as it wouldn't apart from the access of course which would give it away um there's a moment to sound a bit strange wouldn't you with a Dublin accident or a jack haven't i you know you're right about where the lads tarts are at and you know Kevin Kevin done the piece that are there and i hate going around looking for interviews on teams after those and and someone who i have the world of time for and i just knew it was still a bad idea but i had to try get something done in addition to the Kevin one your friend paul dale who was chatting to his family at the time and i talked to him on the shore and he just turned around and he said not a hoe and i think it was a combination of over disappointment and frustration at the same time and not only had i like kind of caught with her own time about an interview he'd also just walked away from his family there and i was like oh shit what have i done like you know what i mean because they were obviously there to chat home and all and that's the that's the side of media that people don't probably see and it's definitely not one that i enjoy that they were brain-tracy after the least came to but piping i get back to it and finish up on it that is now the indication of where lads are at like before it was like chase wasn't a great that became a class now it's like not only we should be meeting them like we we had them there i just think that's the greatest endorsement of where we are now at and i don't know if we were ever as close where we ever was lost in a championship environment too pulling i think only that we've had a few very good leg wins obviously we beat Wexford and we come quite close to being clear at a particular point we drew a go i don't know where we ever is as capable now as capable as we are now i should say here yeah look and even when i look at the panel now i suppose as someone who hardly in carlo for good for years like you know the names are starting to get less and less familiar to me you know and which is great like you know but i was looking at that there when he's like you see Paul and Paul such a great leader like you know and and you know i know he would have been he would have been driving that mindset all week that you know like that like i i think what you are saying there is a hundred percent true like moral victories are gone for this panel you know they're not they don't exist anymore they don't want them they don't want to pat in the back to say you really put it up to them you know they wanted to they were going out to beat up there's no you can see from the start that game there was no way they went out and i feel thinking you know let's just let's try to get through the first few minutes and see where we are they were going out to beat Dublin and this was the best thing about that is how young the panel actually is that you know those players are are now coming on to this panel and they don't know any different they don't know any different any going where going to be Dublin or they don't know any different going where going out to try and be kakani and wexford and you know i i think i think that's as you said there you know following carol harden for a long long time and you know it probably evolved a bit maybe from the club scene and and the club teams you know getting some massive wins and lensored definitely you know building confidence that way but you know i think now carol teams don't fear fear anyone anymore like you know and and that that's such a brilliant thing and and you know they're always striving to want them to be playing at the highest level and that's why i would say it would score if you know there's often teams that unfortunately don't get to win you know not any everyone can win a competition or look not very few people who win and all are but those lads are elite in their mindset and they're striving to be at the highest level they want to be playing kakani you know that there's no doubt in my mind that all those lads are reveling in the opportunity to test themselves against the best in the country you know and that's that that's such a brilliant thing to be able to say as a panel and you can look around the room and say he he wants to be here he wants to be here he wants to be here he wants to be at this level i think that that's that's utterly unstoppable if you can keep that going and you can keep faster and developing that you know the sky's the limit and and i really i really do you know from from the little bits i've got to see and and the games i'm hoping to get down to you know i really think there's there's more gears in this panel and and hopefully they they can find them over next few weeks good stuff well Peter this went on a little bit longer in the 30 minutes i had planned and i do apologize these things tend to happen every week on the podcast but you know what it was a very interesting and enjoyable conversation and not being boys but a very important one to have as well about the future all i suppose and how we can improve things so look as always thanks for when you're forgiven up your time and the very best look to yourself and all the lads going forward this year all right yeah cheers Kevin and thanks for having me on.
