[Music] [Music] We will be bringing you the rivalry of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders. Now, before we get into this rivalry, it's been a couple of weeks since I've sat down and said anything. The last episode I dropped, I actually recorded that before the draft. Then it all got mixed up in the excellent episode that Michael released for the draft. That draft episode was absolutely fantastic. So yeah, so my episode got held back until after the draft and then the last couple of weeks, it's just everything's been going wrong at the minute. Not like in a bad way, you know. It's what I like to call Sods Law. It's been a hitness, which is Sods Law, and a task so simple should be easily complete. But there's always that 0.1% chance that something can go wrong and fuck it up for you. And yeah, it's always tough to win when you get hit by the Lord of Sods. I mean, I catch the train every day for work and you guarantee I'll leave work by the time it takes us to get to the train station. I've got about 10 minutes to wait if the train's on time. So every time I leave, bang on the time that I should get to the train station, I'll check the train because there's a tracker on the train. I'll check the train and it's 10, 15 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes, possibly 45 minutes delayed. And you know, this happens every day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and by Thursday I'm absolutely fed up with it. So, like, right, I'm going to stay back, if I stay back 20 minutes. And then the amount of time it takes us, I can still get there on time if the train's on time. That's like the latest I can stay, it's 20 minutes. So I'll set off 20 minutes later and get closer to the train station and check the tracker. And the fucking thing's on time, it's early. I actually, like, see the bastard in the train there. And I have to embarrass myself by running for the bloody thing to set off just before I get there. And, you know, I have to, like, pretend that I wasn't really running for the train, that I was just decided I was going for a jog. You know, so that's just one example of Sotslow. There could be many, many examples that can happen and hit you at any time, at any point in your life. So, you know, just be wary of Sotslow. Like, last week we had a public holiday over in the UK, so we got Monday off work for three, which is, we have about five or six a year, where we get random Mondays. First Monday May is always one of them. You know, we always take that as a time to try and clear out the flat of all the crap that we've been building up over the last, like, three or four months. So, to do it, like, every quarter, really. And, you know, we were looking at the studio room and, you know, when my wife does work in there as well. And we seem to have been accumulating a lot more stuff, especially on, like, my studio side of the things. And, you know, my wife was like, "Do you not make it smaller?" I was like, "Well, I can't put, you see, my old studio, the Hotbox." It's from the late '90s and it's, you know, I've also, it's, it will post, like, eight track recorder. All the mics and everything are, like, nearly 20-year-old and got loads of booms and mics coming everywhere because it's designed to record a full band in the room. Once, you know, for talk and intel. So, you know, sort of adapted it to try and get to work and stuff. And it had, like, some background and issues where I had to, you know, put my finger on a bit of metal to make sure that it wasn't buzzing and stuff like that. And, you know, I explained all this to my wife and why, you know, why I had to do it. And, you know, the tingle in my finger was starting to get a little bit more profound, you know. So, yeah, it's like the grounding issue was getting a bit worse. I thought it was all right. I could have lived with it, but my wife sort of made us decommissioning the Hotbox studio. And, you know, I've sort of been upgrading slowly into this. I don't like it. It's, it's all this weird. It's very small. You know, it's, you know, it's, this is what I liked about the Hotbox is. Even though it was a big massive unit from the 90s, I just knew that if I pressed that button, pressed that button, it worked. This, I am quite close. But I have got it working, obviously, coming out, and it, to me, it sounds a hell of a lot better to be fair. I still want to keep touching a bit of metal, even though I don't need to. Yeah, it's, it's doing all good. But yeah, like, you know, the old setup took up nearly half of a room. It was like, it was like, the old grey whistle test. The way that it was all aired out and stuff was old grey whistle tests. Like, sure, back in the 60s, all the way up to, I think, even the 80s, he went up to, where they would have bands doing live performances. Usually about two or three songs, and that's what I had, you know, modelled my, my studio on. Was that sort of feel and sound that you would get out of when you recorded in it, and it works great. But for, you know, for this, it was a bit of a, a bit of a hindrance, having all this stuff. So we got this, went from the Hotbox, which, you know, I still love that studio. So it's now back in its box, and, you know, it's, it's going to come back out again. But at the minute, it's just tucked away. And I've got this little setup now, and it all fits in a little bag. So this episode is the birth of Downbag Studios, which I think I'll be using for a long time until I find something easier and better. Yeah, managed to get it all working good. And it's like another fine example of, you know, being caught up in South Wales at first. I had, uh, took the day off work, because I was supposed to be going to see a band called Green Lung on the Wednesday. So I took the first day off work, and I thought, well, I'm off on that first day. And I'll be caught this episode. And I got all my new setup put together, and my couldn't work. I did a little bit of finding about watching lots of videos on YouTube, trying to figure out why me and my couldn't work. Caught in the regular shit. I just wanted to get the Hotbox back out, but it couldn't be bothered, certainly not. And then found out that the interface I got wasn't a double powered interface, and the micro need down using needs of double power. So I had to hold a new interface, which came yesterday. So, I took the day off work on the first day. And this was the absolute shit part of it. I didn't need to take the day off, because I'm actually going to see Green Lung on the Wednesday coming up. I got my bloody weeks mixed up. So I took the day off work for no reason at all. So I thought, well, I might as well try and get this episode done. And then I couldn't get it done. So I just had a day at doing nothing, really. Yeah, a lot of sort of strikes again. So I had to stop for five minutes there, because having me, one of my rabbits decided to have one of the longest drinks in the world. Making an absolute rucker while he was doing it, I think he's just drunk half a bloody bottle of water. Yeah, I haven't, right. So a truce versus red is rivalry. And this rivalry has, you know, been considered one of the NFL's most bitter rivals. Rival Riz, since the AFL was established in 1960. The Chiefs and the Raiders have shared the same division, first being the AFL West Conference. And since the AFL and NFL merger in 1970, the AFC West. And the teams first met in 1961. The Chiefs first known as the Dallas Texans. The Texans defeat the Raiders 34-16 in the teams first game at Auckland. Then the Raiders defeat the Texans 2019 at Dallas. And, you know, the rivalry between Kansas and Auckland didn't really come so apparent until the Kansas City athletics baseball team moved to Auckland in 1968. And in 1969, the Kansas City Royals expansion team was placed in the same division as the athletics. And, you know, later on in 1968, the Chiefs and Raiders had an identical 12-2 record. And the first each of it in the playoff game to decide who would face the New York Jets for the AFL championship. And the Raiders would not have a game 41-6. The following year, in 1969, the Raiders beat the Chiefs twice in the regular season and went on to win the AFL Western Conference title. And the teams met in the 1969 AFL championship game at Auckland. And the underdog Chiefs unfortunately won that game 17-7. And unfortunately, the Chiefs participated in the Super Bowl 4 week later against the, you know, sort of, Vikings. And, you know, we're not really going to talk about that. It was known until, you know, 1976, until the, uh, Auckland Raiders won the first in the Super Bowl. In the first meeting between the teams during the 1970 NFL season, both teams first in the newly merged NFL. The Chiefs held a 17-14 lead late in the fourth quarter and appeared to, you know, run the clock. But the Chiefs quarterback, Len Dawson, ruled right and gint enough yardage for the first down. And as he fell to the ground, Raiders defensive end, Ben Davidson drove into Dawson with his helmet. In retaliation, Davidson was attacked by a Chiefs wide receiver or distiller. And then after a bench clear and brawl, Davidson and Taylor were ejected. And the penalties that were called nullified the first down. Under the rules at the time, Kansas City were forced to punt. And the Raiders took advantages. George Bolyndamida, 48 field goal. Eight seconds left as cured a 17-17 tie. Another tie, uh, provided, uh, provided to be costly for the Chiefs as Auckland clinched the first AFC West Championship with a 20-6 victory in Auckland in week 13. And due to this incident, the NFL changed the rules so that Dawson's penalty, uh, personal foul, would have been enforced at the end of the play. And Taylor's penalty, uh, would have been assessed only after the Chiefs had been awarded the first down. In the 1975 season, the Chiefs defeated the Raiders 42-10. And, you know, prompted the Chiefs live horse mascot, Warpaint, to circle the field after every touchdown. Yeah, so that poor busted horse had to run around the field six times. And, uh, you know, the Raiders caught John Madden and said, you know, we couldn't beat the Chiefs, but we, we'd damn near killed their horse. The Raiders won two more Super Bowl titles in, uh, 1980 and 1983, while the Chiefs were considered to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. And the Raiders won most of the games during the 1970s and '80s, and following the victory in Super Bowl, uh, for the Chiefs' return to the playoffs in 1971, but lost, uh, over time to Miami Dolphins in the divisional round. In the longest game in NFL history, the final game at Kansas City, uh, multiple stadium, following the loss, uh, Kansas City did not return to the playoffs until 1986. In the final game of the 1999 season, the Chiefs and Raiders faced off in, uh, Kansas City, and a win for the Chiefs would put them, uh, in the playoffs. But a game plagued with, uh, special team mistakes for the Chiefs, including free-attempting kick-offs that ended up out balanced by, uh, kickoff specialist John Barker. Uh, helped keep the Raiders in the game and stop the Chiefs from stealing the victory. The game went into overtime and helped by a favourable field position after the third and final kick-off, our bounds. Uh, former chief, Rich Ganon, drove the Raiders into the Chiefs' territory, and set up for a game-winning field goal to knock the Chiefs out of the playoffs for the first win at Arrowhead since, uh, in 1988. In October 2007, the, uh, the Chiefs defeated the Raiders for a record ninth straight victory. The return game in November 2007, uh, the Raiders defeated the Chiefs in Arrowhead for Auckland's first victory over Kansas since December 2002. And, you know, on September 2008, the Raiders defeated the Chiefs' 23 to 8 for the second straight time in Kansas City. And their rookie, Darling McFadden, uh, compiled 210 Russian yards and a touchdown. And on the 30th of November 2008, the Chiefs defeated the Raiders. Raiders, for the sixth straight time in Auckland. They seem to be doing better on the road, better on them. Cutting on that success in 2009, the Raiders went to Kansas City again and beat the Chiefs' 13-10 for the third straight time. The Chiefs became one of the few teams, uh, to lose, to quarterback. On the 15th of November 2009, the Chiefs defeated the Raiders in Auckland. But this is their seventh straight victory on the road in Auckland. In November 2010, the Raiders broke the roadcast by the Chiefs by, yeah, defeating them 23 to 20 in overtime. And this is a matchup that revived this Chiefs and Raiders rivalry. It marked the 99th time that these teams have met in the regular season. And then the following game in January 2011, the Raiders carried on the road dominance by defeating the Chiefs in Kansas City for the fourth straight time, 31 to 10. And they also did a sweep of the full AFC West Dutch season. In 2011, a Raiders fan filed a lawsuit against the Kansas City Chiefs and two unidentified Chiefs fans claiming that security did nothing when they were beaten during the brawl in the air, Kansas City, a head stadium in 2009. The Chiefs broke Auckland's sixth game win streak in Kansas City on October 2013 when the defeat the Raiders 24 to 7 in the game where Kansas City set a then world record for the loudest open air venue. That was, you know, pumping out a noise at over 137 decibels. In November, 2014, the Raiders snapped the 16-game lose in streak in Auckland against the Chiefs while the Kansas City were in a four-game win streak. The week after the Chiefs defeated the defending Super Bowl champions the Seattle Seahawks, the loss ended up costing the air, Kansas City a playoff berth. In 2016, both teams were at the top of the AFC for the entire season and Auckland secured in their first winning season and first playoffs appearance since 2002. The Chiefs beat Auckland twice, 26-10 in Auckland and in Kansas City, 21-13. Both ended the regular season with a 12-4 record with the series of sweep, Kansas City won the AFC West and the first run by while Auckland were relegated to the wildcard stairs and the fifth seed in the AFC playoffs. The Chiefs in their Raiders met for the first night match up in October 2017 in Auckland with the Chiefs at 5-1-1 and the Raiders at 2-4. The Raiders won the game 31-30 with a touchdown pass at the very end of the game which followed two Chiefs defensive penalties. Also included a fight between the two teams that led the Raiders' running back, Marshall Lynch again ejected. The game snapped a four-game losing streak for Auckland in this season and also a five-game losing streak against the Chiefs in the rivalry. Week 5 of the 2020 season, the rivalry between these two was renewed when the two Raiders went to add a head to upset the undefeated Chiefs 40-32. Snapping the five-game losing streak against the Chiefs didn't back to 2017. It was the Raiders' first winning night ahead since 2012 with Daddy Carr passing for 347 yards and three touchdowns while punching homes had their 340 yards and two touchdowns but a costly third quarter in deception. Then it led to a crucial Raiders touchdown. It was my home's first loss to the Raiders and the first loss since losing to the Tennessee Titans in week 10 of the 2019 season. In November 2020, the two teams met in Las Vegas for the first time on Sunday Night Football and with one minute and seven seconds left in the game Daddy Carr flew a touchdown pass to Jason Witten to give the Raiders a 31-28 lead but punching homes led a 75-yard drive to cumullet and in a 23-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelsey with 28 seconds left. It gave the Chiefs a 35-31 win with officially renewed a spark in the rivalry between the two teams and after the Chiefs went on to final the season 14-12 but they lost to the books in the Super Bowl and the Raiders who were six and three leading up to this game began a painful late season collapse as they would lose four of the last six games and the season eight and eight out of the playoffs. Now all of the years these teams have had players and coaches switch sides which have helped take the rivalry back to new heights and keep the spark going and I'll go through a few of those quite a lot and there's some good stories to go with them. So, you know, we've got Cotton Davidson. It was Houston Texans first quarterback but after the first game of the 1962 season Chiefs owner LaMar Hunt, he traded Cotton Davidson to the Raiders without telling the court chair Huxter and the Texans which moved to Kansas City the following season they received a number one pick in the 1963 AFL draft they used to pick up Hall of Fame, a defensive tackle of Buck Buchanan and Lynn Dawson took over as a Chiefs quarterback and Cotton Davidson was one and five as they started against the Chiefs. Tom Flores, Flores played six seasons as a Raiders quarterback but he won the Super Bowl as a backup quarterback for the Chiefs in 1969 which we're not going to say anymore about. Florence returned as a head coach for the Raiders from 1979 to '87 where he won a pair of Super Bowls and Flores has a 9 and 8 record against the Chiefs as a head coach. Andrea Rison spent three seasons as a Chief in 1997 to 1989 and he immediately embarked on the rivalry the game wouldn't touch down with three seconds left in the 28 to 27 victory in 1987 but Rison flipped over to the Raiders in 2000 and as a result from 1997 to 2000 season they'll do eight games the team that had Rison played on it had a 7 and 1 record over them for seasons. Rich Gunan spent four seasons with the Chiefs from '95 to 1998 where he had a 11 and 8 record as a starter while serving mostly as a backup behind the stuporner. Gunan went to the Raiders in 1989 to 2004 and led him to four straight Pro Bowl appearances Gunan Wunney had NFL MVP award in 2002 and he was a one and one as a starter against the Raiders and as six and three as a starter against the Chiefs. John Matusic before he played the role of sloth Mr. Hey you guys in the goonies he was a defensive lineman in the NFL and he played two seasons for the Chiefs in 1974 and 1975 before he was traded to Washington and then he ended up in Auckland where he helped the Raiders win two Super Bowls over a six year career. Now, isn't that crazy? Think that sloth actually has two Super Bowl rings? Well, and we've got Paul Jackson and we know Jackson didn't switch teams. He did bounce back and forth between the cities as a two sport athlete from 1987 to 1990 and for those four years Jackson started as an outfielder for the Kansas City Royals and a running back for the Los Angeles Raiders and for what it's worth, Jackson had 301 Russian yards and three touchdowns in six career games against the Chiefs and the teams split those six means. So, three and three. So, this rivalry really hurts Trist back to the AFL debuts in 1960. Names have changed from the Auckland Raiders to the Houston Texans back then and Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt and Raiders owner Al Davids. They took the rivalry from the AFL to the NFL and then the rivalry continued into the AFC West. Yeah, I mean, look, we're back in 2020 at the win Las Vegas. Pete Kansas City 40-32. At it had stadium to break. I think it was a five game win those in streak. The team was doing victory laps around there. At it had stadium just to piss everybody off. Pull it to words and attitude of then Chiefs coach Matt E. Schottenheimer that I really feel like just gives the meaning to the word rivalry, not just for the Chiefs and the Raiders, but for any of them. And I've found an article that Michael McCambridge is the author of the of America's game. Now, my Schottenheimer said more than once it is thought that Lamar Hunt, the Chiefs owner, was the finest man it ever met. And it viewed Al Davids, the Raiders owner as a disrespectful. And, you know, in the American game he said for my Schottenheimer, that playing the Raiders became a crusade. And Kevin Ross, who played defensive back for the Chiefs in late night and night and night five, remembers clearly what was like prepared and under shot now in a dream Raiders week. And he said that Marty would talk with the most hit. He'd ever heard about any other team in my life. He said he made it very, very personal. We had very clear understanding of what this Raiders game was going to be about. And Schottenheimer led the Chiefs to 1989 to 1998. And during that time span, the Chiefs won 18 of 21 games against the Raiders. The former Chiefs president and general manager, Glaes, explained that it was the attitude of the Raiders possessed the bothered Schottenheimer. He always felt even before he came to the Chiefs, that he came to the Chiefs, that the Raiders and their elegance were something that irritated the Chiefs. But I could tell without a question that it irritated Marty Schottenheimer. Currently the Chiefs equipment manager, Alan Wright, has been with the team for more than 30 years. Remember Schottenheimer's amped up things they used to do for Raiders week. Everything got turned up a notch. There were signs in the elevators, signs in the locker rooms that just simply stayed Raiders week. He wanted the team to be well aware that they were playing the Raiders that week. And Schottenheimer's manager during Raiders week was disrespect. He would talk for at least 10 to 15 minutes at every team meeting to talk about disrespect. From the former Chiefs of NCAA, Tim Conard said they do not respect you, and they do not respect you, and they do not respect you. Whether warranted or not, that was the feel for the fire. Besides just signs, speeches, and historic content between the owners, the perception of what these two teams stood for really fueled this rivalry. Kevin Harlan, the former voice of the Chiefs in 1985 to 1993, said the Raiders got about their business the wrong way. They had been a cheap shot team. They did not respect the spirit in which the NFL should be played. And when Marty Schottenheimer's team took the field, it wasn't just the Chiefs playing against the Raiders. It was the league, and what it stands for, and the respect that it deserves against those Raiders. So, that's enough rate of action. Let's hit you with some stats. We've got 130 meetings in total, that's including the playoffs. And the all-time series is a 73 to the Chiefs 55 to the Raiders. And two ties, that's including the playoffs. Puses and results, Chiefs 2 to 1. The largest victory for the Chiefs was 48 to 9 in 2021. For the Raiders, it was 41 to 6 in 1968. The longest win streak for the Chiefs were 9, which is between 2003 and 2007. And the longest for the Raiders is 7 between 1975 and 1978. Now, there's a lot of championships and, you know, winning seasons for these two. Let's see, well, we've got a AFL championships as 4 between these two two's. 3 for the Raiders, 3 for the Chiefs 31 for the Raiders. Super Bowl championships is 7 between them. 4 for the Chiefs and 3 for the Raiders. Super Bowl appearances have had 11, 6 for the Chiefs, 5 for the Raiders. The AFC championships has been 8 for each. AFC championship game appearances has been 8, sorry, 18. 7 for the Chiefs, 11 for the Raiders. The AFL Western Division championship has been 5 for pregnancies 2. So 5 victories is 2 for the Chiefs and 3 for the Raiders. The AFC West Division championships from the 1970s to the present day has been 26. Between the 14 for the Chiefs and 12 for the Raiders, the AFL wildcard berth between 1960 and present. There's only 2 for the Chiefs and the AFC wildcard berth from the 1970s to the present is 8 for the Chiefs and 7 for the Raiders. Whoo, really, I was a few to get through. So that is the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Las Vegas Raiders. Yeah, I'll be back next week with the Arizona Cardinals versus the Los Angeles Rams. I think, yep, that's all I've got next. I'm supposed to, yep, I've definitely got green lung on Wednesday. I haven't got my weeks mixed up now. I won't pass that. Yeah, and the more I'm recording this episode, the more I'm starting to actually appreciate this new week. So Downbag Studios isn't going to be as bad as what I originally thought to be on it. Well, I could crack up the whole box anytime soon. So, with that being said, I will see you next week with the Arizona Cardinals versus the Los Angeles Rams. Stay fly, everybody. Stay fly.
