Since 1983, the Catholic faithful from around the world have gathered in the nation of France to take part in an annual three-day, 60-mile walking pilgrimage from Paris to the city of Chateau. It's an event that draws primarily traditional Catholics, trad Catholics, as they're called, to celebrate together the pre-Vatican II traditional Latin liturgy. What's so fascinating here, though, is that the numbers of attendees have been skyrocketing of late since COVID, estimated numbers of pilgrims have reached the tens of thousands. This year alone, the estimated attendance is anywhere from 20 to 40,000. The pilgrimage begins in one of the many cathedrals in Paris, where tens of thousands of particularly young Catholics gather together in prayer and worship in preparation for the journey ahead. Then the tens of thousands of faithful begin their three-day journey towards the sacred city of Chateau. The journey is bookmarked by a solemn mass each of the days they are on their journey, with thousands upon thousands united in worship and a solemn mass the ancient Latin right partaking of the Eucharist. And finally, worshipers by the thousands gathered together at the sacred Chateau Cathedral in celebration of the ancient Latin Mass. You may toss as we know. [Music] Now, among some of the more notable figures spotted in the pilgrimage this year, there were photos of Candace Owens, who was just recently received into the Catholic Church, and Mary-El-Marcell, the niece of Marine Le Pen, rising star in France's nationalist populist politics. Now what's so fascinating about the Chateau pilgrimage is that it's actually par for the course in what's happening all over Europe and indeed in much of the world. In short, we're seeing nothing less than a massive surge in Christian pilgrimages. There have been a number of reports coming out of late detailing a very noticeable increase in pilgrimage-based tourism, particularly throughout the Holy Land, Europe, and Russia. In fact, Israeli tourism alone has more than tripled over the last 10 years, with a vast majority of tourists being Christians. By some figures, Christians account for nearly 60% of all Israeli tourism. Just among Coptic Christians alone living in Egypt, their pilgrimages to Israel doubled in the last few years. And it's not just the Holy Land. Studies show that today there are over 6,000 active Christian holy sites throughout Western Europe that draw off, you can believe it, more than 66 million visitors a year. And interestingly enough, they're finding that a vast majority of these pilgrims are coming from supposedly secular Western Europe. But it's not just Western Europe. When the relics of St. Nicholas of Myra came to Russia a few years back, it was estimated that over 2.5 million Russians came out to venerate the relics. Organizers for the display of the relics estimated that anywhere from 18 to 48,000 pilgrims visited Christ the Savior Cathedral, where the relics were housed every single day, and the line could stretch as far out as two miles. The average time for standing in the line, it was about nine hours. And of course, Russian President Vladimir Putin was one of the first to venerate these sacred relics, again, demonstrating Russia's revitalization of Orthodox Christian civilization, which takes us back full circle to what's happening at Shotra Cathedral. What we have to understand is that the entire world is changing through these pilgrimages, precisely because the medieval cathedral was built to rightly reorient the entire cosmos towards God. And so amazing is that each cathedral is actually the entire cosmos embodied in stone and in light. Cathedrals deliberately sought to rightly order the entire cosmos back to God in and through Christ. For example, worship took place in churches that were constructed facing east, such that the ascent of human words and prayer and song parallel the rising of the sun in the morning, with both cathedral and creation, praising God together in anticipation of the new creation. Hence, liturgy is cosmology in its fullest expression. And that's precisely what's being reawakened in these pilgrimages. What's happening in and through these cathedrals is that our collective imaginations are reimagining the world in relation to the restoration of paradise in the transformative life death and resurrection of Christ. That's precisely what these cathedrals were built for. And as we can see with these massive surge in numbers, the purpose is being reinvigorated like never before. It's here in this cosmic cathedral where the imagination, the desires, the dispositions of the human person are shaped and guided and led to encounter the kingdom of God revealed in the incarnation and extended out into the entire world through the sacramental life of the church, drawing the entire cosmos up into inner trinitarian life into a divine communion in which all things are eternally perfected in God.
