How's it going, Damien? >> Gentlemen, how are you today? >> All right, so we talked about Joel Quenville and Luke Fox yesterday in our conversation with him, said that he thought that there was at least a conversation had between the Leafs and the NHL inquiring about him. So let's separate him from the equation. Outside of Joel Quenville, did the Leafs get the right guy? >> Sure. I mean, I got to say, I mean, watching that press conference unfold yesterday, one word kept coming back to me and that was, wow, is this ever uninspiring? This was the Leafs inspiring coaching change press conference. I think I remember. I was counting them up. I've seen, so since I started covering the Leafs back in '89, I've seen 13 of these. And probably this was right up there as the Leafs inspiring. Basically, they all got up there. They all had long faces, no smiles. Everybody just sort of looking part of me. >> Yeah, definitely no smiles. I was surprised to see that Craig did smile at like the Jersey unveiling where Keith Pelly looks like he's four feet tall, by the way. How tall is Keith Pelly? I've seen him in person, but it's like, like, Craig Barouba looks like he's seven feet tall. He's only six-one. But anyways, he did smile in that picture. But like, yeah, not one smile from him. This is his dream job. You would think at some point it would be like, this is awesome. But no, we didn't get any of that. And I, you know, he talks about being his final. I don't think it's his dream job at all. I mean, I think it's a great job. And it's a very well-paid job. So, you know, I just, you know, to me, you know, between Brad Treliving and Craig Barouba, Brendan Shanahan was such a unique addition as president because he grew up in Toronto. He was a chemical boy. He played minor hockey in Toronto. There were those major Toronto connections that, yeah, these guys are, these guys are, are paid mercenaries come in from some other place to try to help this team win in the playoffs. And so you have this super serious non-smiling approach, which maybe they think is what people want. Well, let me, let me jump in there, Demo, because that's what I was thinking is that, you know, I don't know that I would think of Kyle Dubis as like a squash buckler who gets up there and is like, hey, let me make all these proclamations. But, you know, he did say we can and we will when talking about signing these guys up and winning. I do wonder how much of that is a concerted change that they are making an effort to say like, hey, we are not coming up here with, with Bluster. I mean, from Barouba's perspective, it almost felt like he was trying to poo-poo the idea of that he was going to be publicly, you know, mean to these players if needed to be. It just felt like it was a very concerted effort to, to be confident. And I saw that yesterday but I feel like that's kind of been tri-living's, Emo, the entire time, every time we've heard him speak in his year and change his Leafs gym. Yeah. And I think that's why, to me, it just felt really uninspiring. I remember when Pat Burns got hired and he could be as dower as anybody. But he was all smiles and, you know, and all that. And, you know, we can go through all the hirings over the years. But this one was like, I don't know, just left me feeling flat as an observer of what they do. And, you know, I really feel, and I haven't talked to Sean and Hannah about this, and hopefully I will at some point. I really feel like this, this just all seems so unimaginative to me. And not what the idea was to build this shining hockey city on a mountain sort of thing. You know, all these ideas they had before, you know, hiring Kyle Dubas and bringing in Haley Wickenhiser and doing it differently and being willing to go places. Other franchises weren't willing to go. And now it's like, nope, we're going to do what everybody else does. And we're going to have accountability around here. No more fun. And it's just, I don't know. Maybe that'll get some people excited. It wouldn't get me excited if I was a Leafs fan. Well, I mean, it is something different, wouldn't you say? Like, what has taken place the previous near decade has resulted in lots of regular season wins? And I don't know. Maybe you're of the belief that they've just flipped the coin too many times. And it's just, man, it's come up tails. And it's a shocking amount of times. But it is just a coin flip. And they're a coin flip away from having this great run of success. I would say, I don't know, I watched the Stanley Cup playoffs now. And I don't think that Leafs team that we watched in 70 games against the Bruins fits in. But I think, just personally, I'm like down for something different. I get it that, like, you want to be staunch in your beliefs and like, there is something to be said for Brendan Janahan having this idea. And I guess at the outset, it was like more of a hard-nosed, like, really stern hockey mentality with Lulamorello and Mike Babcock and then evolving to Sheldon Keith Kyle Dubas and then back to that. And that maybe that is what maybe is leaving you a little bit perplexed here. But I will say that it does feel like there is a necessary adjustment considering what we've seen in the last half decade. Well, again, then I go back to the flexion of a Boston defenseman's skate that Jeremy Swamin makes an unbelievable stop on in the dying seconds of game seven. Or we're not even having this conversation because Sheldon Keith is still the coach of Leafs. So this- Even if they get smashed by the Panthers in the second round, which, I mean, yeah, they were close to winning a round against the Bruins. They didn't look like they were standing up contenders, though. But I think so much of it is, you know, look, I think the one common denominator, you can talk about accountability and toughness and, you know, all this sort of stuff. The common factor of all these playoff losses is goaltending. And the one time they won a series, their guy was better than the other team's guy. And they didn't look like that. As the fan morning show continues, Ben Ennis, Brent Gunning, Craig Berube introduced yesterday as the newest head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. No cracking a smile until the media, or picture that was taken at the end of the media availability. Let's talk to a guy that's a smile plenty. Hopefully he's smiling right now. Jason Demers, hockey analyst for NHL Network, former NHL defenseman. How's it going, Jason? I'm doing great. How are we doing, boys? We got the conference finals coming, so it's eight times. Yeah, once again, at least not in it. But yeah, no, it's been great hockey, honestly. Yeah, for you, maybe. Hi, listen. It kind of keeps the lights on around here. They weren't ready. Oh, you guys love it when they don't make it. They're more happy with it. They don't make it. No, you don't think that's true. Because there are a lot of fans that think that it's like, "Oh, they're Toronto media. They're licking their lips. The Leafs are out again." It won't be more fun than talking about a Leafs coaching change in Craig Berube's first media availability. Talking about them winning their first Stanley Cup since 1967 and the possibility of that happening. No, you don't honestly think that the media is rooting against the Leafs in this city. Do you? I think some are. Oh. And not in a crazy way, but just enough where it's like, "Listen, it provides a great story line to kind of play GM as well." So, you know, there's a silver lining when teams don't win. You know, listen, I'm not saying all Toronto media. I'm sure there's a couple outliers, but, you know, the majority want them to win. Listen, I'm at the point where I want them to win even. And I don't have any skin in the game just because I feel so bad for the city. But, you know, I feel like this is the first year that people kind of knew that, "Listen, they're not going to win, but we need them to get out of the first round." You nailed it. Yeah, I think everybody had kind of proper expectations for this team. I mean, it's the playoffs with the, you know, the high caliber of like high end talent they have. Anything can happen, but yeah, I don't think anybody was holding their breath. We do want to talk about the conference finals, but obviously, you know, we're in Toronto, so we lead Leafland here. They hire, they hire hard-nosed coach, Craig Barubay. You know, one of the things that was talked about a ton is accountability, accountability. You know, Barubay's kind of in a tough spot here because he's coming in and I think everyone wants him to be himself of holding these players to account. But I also think there's a big segment of people that almost want him to make a show of it. What do you expect from Craig Barubay in terms of kind of holding players' account as Leaf's head coach? And do you think that will look different than it did in a market like St. Louis? No, I think he's going to stay true to who he is. And the guy who's a cup, he knows how to win. He's had a good pedigree of players come through there that know how to win and that he's taught. So I think, you know, the only thing that worries me is he did kind of struggle to get Jordan Tyru and Thomas going. And he kind of lost them a little bit in the room last year in St. Louis. And that worries me because, you know, players that are very similar to those two are Marner and Neelander and Amad. It's not saying that those guys aren't better than Tyru and Thomas just saying it's the same type of player. So that worries me a little bit, but I think at the end of the day, one thing that Craig said that was phenomenal. And he is very truthful and he says that because I've heard it from guys around the league is that players know where they stand with them. So you're not going to be in the worst thing as a player is going into the rink and not knowing, you know, what the coach thinks of you or what he wants from you or if you're even playing the right way. And I know that sounds like a little baby is because you're like, well, you're an NHL athlete. But listen, you're a lot of these guys when they start struggling with confidence is, you know, you're trying to be a team guy and play with the system. But if you don't know where you stand with them, that system, it's really hard. So and I've been there and the one thing Craig made sure of is that you know your role and you play to that role because if you don't, you ain't playing. So I think I think the Maple Leafs needed a whipcracker and somebody that's going to come in, especially if they don't move on from Devaras or Marner and those guys end up staying for another year. They need a guy that, listen, if you don't play, you're not playing. But no matter how much you're making, we're playing to win and we're putting out the lineup, it's going to make us win. Not to say that he's not like a strong tactician and apparently, yeah, I mean, what did Brad for Livingzay is like quiet genius or something, understated genius. But yeah, I think he's being brought in here for the other stuff, right? You've had a number of different head coaches. Like what's more important to success is that the like, hey, here's the game plan. Here's the brilliant scheme I've devised to win or is it the other thing? Like the motivation thing, the relationship thing, like what's more important out of your head coach? It seems like it's tough to take just one. The one thing I always loved as a coach is exactly what Bruvay said because most coaches, you can't be in the NHL if you don't know X's and O's and you're not detail oriented. Now, unfortunately, there are some coaches in the NHL that still get jobs and they're not detail oriented and I don't know how they stay in, but it is what it is. That's another name names. That's another no, I'll never do that. Don't give me, don't give me in trouble. I know it's really in the morning, but I won't. I thought you almost gotcha. That was going to slip through. You almost did. I almost did a couple. But just being honest with the way they coach is the most important thing. You know, there's a lot of, you're either a friend and a team, you know, a players coach or you're a toward a rela where you're, you know, it's, you're very hard and fair. So, but you have to stick to your gun. You can't wave or you got to stick to your, your, your style of coaching and guys have to adhere to that. And, you know, it's, it's, I think, especially early on, he's got to kind of stay true to who he is. Now, it's not to say that he's also got to work through all the different personalities. You know, there's certain guys you can yell at and other guys, you kind of got to handle a quite club. So, it's going to be definitely a challenge for him, but I think he is such a smart coach and, and very honest at this point. So, I think guys are going to know what they need to do on the ice. And when they get out there, they're going to know all the details and where they stand. And that's important just because you're going to weed out that way you weed out who's on board and who's pulling in the right direction and who's the, who's a passenger that, that's kind of on his own program. And that's the beautiful thing about coaches like that is they'll, they'll weed that stuff out early and fans in Toronto will see it. Everybody will see it and they'll know who's ready for the future and who is. Do you later? Yeah, it'll be, it'll be really curious to see, you know, because there's been guys that have been in this system that have been under key for so long. And, you know, everybody gets a new lease on life somewhere when you get a new boss in work, you know, you've played for a lot of guys that I think people would describe as, as harder coaches, be it a Lindy Ralph McClellan. I'm wondering how those guys compared to Dimitri Carvatan off your coach with Akbar's Kazan in 21, 22, we're always good for a Russia story. Like if we think NHL coaches are hard. What was it like in your, your little soldier and over there? Oh, Dima was, Dima was great with the import, but, you know, he, we'd have a guy sit next to us translating his speeches. But he was one of, he was a hard coach on the Russian guys for sure. And he was, there's a lot of swear words coming and he expected, he expected a perfection and sometimes guys didn't really know what that was. So, I remember sitting down in a meeting and we could just, he was screaming in Russian and we'd hear our names kind of pop in. And you wouldn't, you wouldn't tell us where it is. So guys are translating for us just saying like, hey, don't worry. He's saying you guys are fine, but you guys are like, you gotta like leave if we don't play better. So it was, it was weird because we had such a, we had a great team and guys were great there, but it was like, he, you really favored the imports and that doesn't work. Typically, because again, you need everybody and we got to be accountable as well. So, but it was, there's a lot of stories that are, are for radio that I can tell you guys one of these days. Yeah, keep it all together. Keep those stories with the coaches who aren't detail oriented and we'll take that offline. That'll be the podcast. Exactly. Like you did podcast. It's fine. All right. Yeah. Conference final start tonight at MSG Panthers and Rangers. I just, how about this? Let's start here. Who's the Stanley Cup favorite right now? Vegas has the, the Panthers as the favorite. Do you agree with that? I would say the stars, if they can, you know, they've had a harder road, but I would say the stars for me is probably the team to beat. I think they're, you know, I'm a West. I'm a West Coast guy. I say for that, I have a little bias, but, you know, I think it's either those two would be my pick to come out. Now, I think there's a path for the Rangers to win. They just need a one number one. They need Adam Fox to kind of be Adam Fox. This series, I don't think he's had the best. He's been good, but he hasn't been as, as dynamic as he was in the season. So he needs to kind of get going. And then. I think that, I mean, for the Rangers, if it's me, I'm playing, ramping. I'm telling them to go get kicked out of the game and just kill somebody, not figuratively, not actually, but like. Go, go, try to let this Brad March out and say, go try to injure a few guys and take out some top guys and grab one and beat the wheels off them. And I know it sounds bad, but I feel like they got established respect with this Florida team because Florida seems to. I feel like Boston did a good job. It was just a little too late of them kind of pushing back against Florida. And, but I think New York needs to do it right off the gate and take it to him and. And just show them that it's because listen, they do have some tough guys in Florida, but they play a team identity that's tough, but they're not. You know, other than two or three guys, they don't really have a super tough team. It's a lot of guys playing bigger than they actually are. Because that team identity and no one's really fully challenged them early early on, like, don't wait till you're down two or three games and then. And then do it because then it's too late. You got to kind of get them early and make the first game of war and. And see what's. See what happens. So I think, you know, like the last year with Vegas, that's what Vegas kind of did against Florida in the finals and, you know, they've banged up. Heard some of those guys and they really changed the series for him. Yeah, it certainly didn't like, yeah, you wouldn't want Matt Renpe to kill anybody, but like, you know, a light maiming, a light maiming of somebody. A light maiming. Yeah, run them over in your car. Like, oh, no, that's right. Yeah. Oh, that's Sidney Croft. Get him outside before he goes into the ring, you know, although it's fun. Why? Why? No, I can just think of Tonya Arden there. Euler's. They're the one team that doesn't seem to fit of this group. I'm not saying they don't deserve to be here. You win two playoff rounds. There's no such thing as deserve. You just get what you get. But do they feel like the team that doesn't quite look the same as the other three we see sitting around with the final four here? Well, it's just because the gold tending issue they ran into in the second round and, you know, I think it's people and Edmonton are. It's a tough market. And I kind of was talking about that a little bit being that once there's a little bit of adversity will he turn off Skinner pretty quickly and not to say that he didn't deserve it. But they did. And I'm, you know, the best thing they have going for him. I think right now that we're talking coaches is just the calmness of Chris now block. He's been incredible for this team. He's made some undercover moves that have really I felt saved that series. Now they're getting arrested Dallas who did go through the continent in the first two rounds. I don't know if they are structured defensively as Dallas to beat them and obviously Jay Cotton chair versus. Do it Skinner. I don't know what you guys would bet on, but I think you do. How you do. How you do. Just just for the way he he's playing right now. It's incredible. So. And there's a lot of belief in that room. But you know, listen, they have the two arguably the two best players in the world on that team and Evan Bouchard's quickly becoming an absolute stud on defense and putting on an incredible performance. So it's going to be very interesting because they're the team that could surprise. But I do just see I do see Dallas kind of neutralizing them a little bit. All right.
