AP News, I'm Haya Punjwani. Senate Republicans again blocked a bill met to clamp down on the number of migrants allowed to claim asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer sought to underscore GOP resistance to the proposal today. Just like three months ago, Senate Republicans rejected the strongest and most comprehensive bipartisan border security bill Congress has seen in a whole generation. It's a sad day for the Senate, a sad day for America. A Northern Arizona man was convicted in a jury trial today of a first-degree murder and other crimes in the 2020 starvation death of his six-year-old son. Controversial legislation on abortion medication has been approved in Louisiana. Louisiana lawmakers have passed a first-of-its-kind bill that would classify two abortion-inducing drugs as controlled and dangerous substances. The final state Senate vote came despite widespread criticism from doctors who note that the drugs have other critical reproductive health care uses like treating miscarriages and inducing labor. Doctors say changing the classification of miffer-pristone and mysprostol could make it harder to prescribe the drug's delaying crucial treatment for patients. The legislation now heads to the Republican Governor Jeff Landry, who has expressed support for it in the past. I'm Shelley Appler. President Joe Biden thanked Kenyan President William Ruto for sending police to Haiti at a news conference. Ruto says his nation feels strongly about sending troops to Haiti. Kenya believes that the responsibility of peace and security anywhere in the world, including in Haiti, is the collective responsibility of all nations and all peoples who believe in freedom, self-determination, democracy and justice. And it is the reason why Kenya took up this responsibility. This is AP News. Iran entered President Ibrahim Raisi at the nation's holiest Shiite shrine today. He was killed in a helicopter crash. Here's the latest on unemployment. 8,000 fewer Americans applied for unemployment last week. There are still plenty of jobs and the economy is still broadly healthy thanks to strong consumer spending. But there are some signs to note. The government says there were eight and a half million job openings in March. That's the lowest number of vacancies in three years, and companies have been announcing more job cuts recently, mostly in technology and media. Google parent company Alphabet, Apple and eBay have all recently announced layoffs. And companies announcing job cuts also include Walmart, Peloton, Stellantis, Nike and Tesla. Overall, almost 1.8 million Americans were on unemployment during the week that ended May 11th. I'm Rita Falle. I'm Haiya Panjuani, AP News.
