AP News, I'm Ed Donahue. More on closing arguments in former President Donald Trump's hush money trial in New York in a moment. But there was a new wrinkle today. Supporters of President Biden were outside the courthouse. Two Capitol police officers talked about the Capitol riot. With them was Robert De Niro. Donald Trump wants to destroy not only the city, but the country and eventually he could destroy the world. Trump supporters say President Biden is losing and described De Niro as a washed up actor. At the hush money trial, prosecutors are presenting closing arguments, saying Donald Trump's purpose was to manipulate and defraud the voters, to pull the wool over their eyes in a coordinated fashion. The defense maintained former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, the prosecution's star witness, lied on the witness stand. Donald Trump Jr. spoke outside court. This is amazing. I think Todd Blanche summed it up best. If there was an MVP, if there was a goat of liars, it is Michael Cohen. Michael Cohen is the embodiment of reasonable doubt. Prosecutors say Trump chose Michael Cohen to be his fixer because he was willing to lie and cheat on the defendant's behalf. President Biden will be formally nominated as the Democratic presidential nominee through a virtual roll call ahead of the party's official convention in August in Chicago. It's a maneuver that will allow the president to appear on the November ballot in Ohio. Police in Chicago fatally shot a stabbing suspect and wounded the person he was trying to stab after the suspect refused to drop his weapon. A man who was arrested in March on charges of randomly hitting a woman walking down a street in New York City has been indicted on hate crimes charges for that assault and several others. A federal appeals court upheld the retired New York Police Department officers conviction and 10-year prison sentence for assaulting a police officer during the Capitol riot. This is AP News. Some encouraging numbers about consumer confidence. After three straight months of declines, consumer confidence is up this month, although Americans do remain anxious about inflation and interest rates. The conference board, which is a business research group, says its consumer confidence index rose from 97.5 in April to 102 this month, which is great news since analysts were expecting the index to decline again. As for the measure of American short-term expectations for income, business and the job market, that was up about six points since April. I'm Shirley Adler. In San Francisco, David DePap, the man convicted of attempting to hold former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hostage and attacking her husband with a hammer two years ago, apologized in federal court but still received a 30-year prison sentence.
