A.P. News. I'm Ed Donahue. It's now up to a jury to decide the fate of former President Donald Trump in his Hush Money trial. The A.P.'s Julie Walker is in New York. Donald Trump left the courtroom after the jury and his Hush Money trial received instructions from the judge on the case and started deliberating. Mother to her A.P. News, but we'll see. We'll see how we do. It's a very disgraceful situation. The judge told the jury of seven men and five women you decide the truth. It's not my responsibility to judge the evidence here. It is yours. These charges are rigged. The whole thing is rigged. To convict Trump, jurors must find beyond a reasonable doubt that he falsified or caused business records to be entered falsely and did so with the intent to deceive and the intent to commit or conceal another crime. At Criminal Court in Manhattan, I'm Julie Walker. In a letter to Congress, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is rejecting calls to step aside from cases involving former President Trump and January 6th defendants because of the controversy over flags that flew over his homes. Alito says his wife was responsible for flying an upside-down flag over his home in 2021 and an appeal to heaven flag in a New Jersey beach house last year and neither incident, he says, merits his recusal. Charges have been dropped against the world's top golfer, Scottie Sheffler. It was a chaotic situation and a big misunderstanding. That was Sheffler after he was arrested and handcuffed in Louisville during the PGA Championship. He was charged with a felony for something a police officer with his vehicle along with three misdemeanors. The local prosecutor says based on the totality of the evidence, his office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges against Sheffler. Israel's military says it has seized control of a strategic corridor that runs along the length of Gaza's border with Egypt near the city of Rafa. This is AP News. A key Republican wants to boost defense spending. Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, is the ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee. The fact that we're in a new Cold War is self-evident. Wicker's calling for an additional $55 billion for the military beyond what was agreed in the deal to suspend the nation's debt limit a year ago, saying a generational investment is needed. There's never been such a level of cooperation and coordination among an axis of aggressors. Under his proposal, the military would eventually consume 5% of America's gross domestic product, a rate not seen since the early 1990s. This is going to require a national conversation. The plan is likely to face skepticism from lawmakers wary of growing the defense budget which already dominates annual discretionary funding. Jennifer King, Washington. I'm Ed Donahue, AP News.
