This is AP News. I'm Rita Folley. Today the jury is expected to begin deliberations in Donald Trump's Hush Money trial. The AP's Julie Walker is covering the trial in New York. The judge presiding over Donald Trump's Hush Money case will give jurors instructions today on the charges against the former president and how to weigh them. Closing arguments were yesterday, with the defense taking more than two and a half hours, telling jurors the star witness is a liar and Trump did nothing wrong. And prosecutors taking more than four and a half hours telling jurors the former president engaged in a conspiracy and cover up. The jury will weigh 34 felony charges against Trump stemming from what the prosecution says were falsified business records to cover Hush Money payments to possibly sway the election. Another round of strong storms with damaging winds and baseball-sized hail has pummeled Texas, leaving one person dead and about one million businesses in homes without power. Early season heat is adding to the misery. Around Houston, more than 300,000 customers lost power. The area is still recovering from Hurricane Force winds earlier this month. I-Norman Hall. Two people were missing and seven others injured in Youngstown, Ohio after a natural gas explosion blew off the front of a downtown building, say, authorities. This was yesterday afternoon. Tragedy overseas, a speeding passenger bus crashed off a highway and fell into a ravine in Pakistan this morning, killing at least 28 people, say officials. A new report by Amnesty International says that it recorded a total of 1,153 executions in 2023, a 30 percent increase from 2022. Amnesty says the figure does not include thousands of death sentences believed to have been carried out in China, where data is not available due to state secrecy. The group says the spike in recorded executions was primarily driven by Iran, where authorities executed at least 853 people last year compared to 576 in 2022. Amnesty says China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and the US were the 5 countries with the highest number of executions in 2023. I'm Lisa Dwyer. And I'm Rita Foley, AP News.
