(upbeat music) Final segment here on a Wednesday. It's Dan Reachow, Satyarsha in the Kintec studio, Kintec Canada's favorite orthotics provider, powered by thousands of five-star Google reviews. So our feet, what are you waiting for? We've talked a lot about the Canucks coaching adjustments. Today, you can go back and listen to those all on podcast. If you missed any of it, we talked to new assistant, Yogi's Fay Kofsky, and discussed what Rick Tockett had to say in the opening segment of the show, plus Kevin Woodley was a guest on the program as well. All available on your favorite pod catcher. Let's get to it. First day, it's overrated underrated. (upbeat music) One thing I will tell you for a certain, this BlueJ season is not underrated. Because there are two tutorials right now, or because they're just trash. - Maybe it's so-- - Oh, I see, I see, I see. - Maybe it's not-- - It's so hated, though, that it's underrated. - No, it's not possible to underrate how bad this BlueJ season is. - Okay. - You know the best part about this, though, is there like a six-game winning streak away from Reachow? - Oh, what? You know what sucks, too? The Yankees are good. - Yeah, they're really good. I hate when the Yankees are good, 'cause then you gotta deal with Randy. - Yeah. All right, let's get to something positive. What do we got? - We got a lot of water related things. - Chocker. - We'll save that for the end, though. - I feel like 87% of the replies today were all about the water bottle. - There was a lot of water bottle stuff. It has its own section in overrated underrated today, but we'll start with the Canucks-related things. Ray, going after Trevor Zegris, overrated or underrated? - So, Pierre Lebron reporting, I think it was last night, at the athletic that the Ducks are listening to offers on Trevor Zegris. So, would it be overrated or underrated for the Canucks to be in on Trevor Zegris? For the Canucks, I think it's overrated. Like, do the Canucks have, I wouldn't say, I mean, look, if you can add more talented players, sure, go out and do it. I don't know if the Canucks have the assets that Anaheim would want, number one, and two, like, is that the player that you believe in when I feel like this coaching staff might have similar question marks about Zegris that Anaheim currently does. - I like Zegris if I have a bevy of assets. - Yeah. - And cap space? - Yeah. - And I'm looking to bring some youth into my lineup, right? Or I'm a team that's kind of rebuilding, right? And you're looking for young talented players. To the point you made, the Canucks can maybe make one big trade, yeah. And is that the guy you're trading for? And yeah, if you could get Zegris for a second or something, sure, I mean, I'd be all for taking that flyer, but they're not gonna give Zegris away. - No, I'm sure if Anaheim's trading him given what he's shown already talent-wise, and there is a pretty good chance that he figures it out eventually and becomes a pretty prolific scorer and a better, you know, to a reliable player. And if that happens, how dumb do you look if you give him away for nothing? - Yeah. - So you're not getting him cheap. It's gonna cost a lot. And that's not the guy that I would spend my assets on for the Canucks. If you're trading your top assets for him, I think you'll be looking to fill your other needs, and it's gonna be hard to do so. - Yeah, somebody's not, if Pat Verbeek was smart, he'd be calling Bill Armstrong in the Utah team. Hey, see you got lots of draft picks. Trevor Zegris, to be the face of your franchise? - Give us all 15 of your second rounders. Next one from David, Brendan Dillon as a Nikita Zadora replacement, and signing Jason Zooker, overrated or underrated? Two different things. - So would Zooker underrated? Although he's not my first, again, like I've gone through the Zooker thing a few times. I wanna make it clear. He's not like my first, second or third choice. He's my baseline choice. He's like, if you can't get your top targets, that's kind of the guy I would break glass in case of emergency. - He's your, he's your fall guy. - Yeah, the fall guy. But I think it's underrated. Like if you get, I think even if you sign your other big players, and you can find a way to get Zooker on a one year deal and you have caps, I still think it's a decent move, that even if it doesn't play with Patterson, it doesn't play in your power play, he's probably an upgrade on Souter playing alongside Besser and Miller, for instance, right? So in terms of an addition for a year especially, I think it's underrated. I think the question on Dylan comes down to your expectation of him. I think if you're expecting Dylan to play 17 minutes a game, 18 minutes a game, it'd be physical like Zadorov, I think so. He's not gonna have the Zadorov peak in the playoffs with the combination of skating, being as imposing as he was. But I do think, if you can get Dylan signed to a contract around three million for a couple of years, I'd rather do that than overspend on Zadorov. I think he brings the requisite size, physicality as a character guy, good in the room, type of deal too, local boy, not the fastest player, but he's physical and he's good on the PK. - I had a career, I ate goals this year in 1844 of average ice time with the Winnipeg Jets, so we had a solid age 33 season, has the size element that we know this Canucks coaching staff likes, is a left shot, which they could be looking for another left shot to play in that sort of a role. It makes a lot of sense. And have we seen players look at the Leafs? When the Leafs got good, a couple of Toronto guys were like, you know what, I'm gonna sign a cheap deal to go play at home and maybe go on, playoff runs with my hometown team that I grew up cheering for. Is that something that could happen here in Vancouver? Now, look, Brendan Dillon is still too good of a player to be taking a $1 million a year contract, but could he foresee himself playing in Vancouver at maybe less than market value, and that's where it becomes really intriguing for the Vancouver Canucks. So I would say underrated on the Dillon. - So Ian Cole quickly signed, he was 34 when he signed, right? - Yeah. - And he signed a one-year deal, we're 3 million? - Yeah. - You're probably looking at one-year, 3 million for Dillon. Pretty similar if you look at, you know, the numbers obviously more goals for him, but if you look at the defensive impact and everything, minutes, pretty similar to what Cole was at. Two years, a six million? - Yeah, that could make sense. Could work, I would hope it'd be a little bit lighter, but, you know, tough in this market with the, as you've mentioned a couple of times, just how few left shot options there are out there in the free agent market. - Next one from Woodrow, golfing with Murph, Miller, and Zadorov, overrated or underrated. - I would love to know. - I'd say underrated. - Ben, did you see them out there at CAP the other day? - I saw them in the 19th hole in the back. I was up to the practice, and then I went to the back to plug in my score, and then I could hear this, like, Russian accent, and I was like, well, there's a door up there. And they were all at the back table getting some beers and hanging out, and so I was, we go like, say what's up to them, but I saw them out there, and apparently Miller can hit it a long way, apparently. - Yeah, Miller's a real player. Our 18th hole is like 570, uphill into the wind, hit it in two, no problem, from what I heard. And I was like, I haven't done that this year, so. - No, he's a fighter. - I mean, I think if he actually put the work in, he could probably play in a PGA tournament at some point. - He, I mean, he's, in the past he's tried to qualify for the US Open and whatever else. It takes, as Ben would know, better than anybody here in this conversation, how difficult it would be to get on tour, but yeah, if Miller's one of those guys, like if he wasn't a pro hockey player, he could probably be a pro athlete somewhere else, and golf would probably be that thing for him. - Yeah, but what I've heard is like, he's so good that if he actually put everything into golf, I'm not saying he'd be one of the best golfers in the world or be a regular long. - He's a court lead you, like, just by what? - Oh, he's just told us, he's two or long. - Yes, for sure, two or longer. If that story's true, like, that is. - That's sanely. - That's what I've heard, like, his game, he has, like, he has the game of a pro. It's, can you, like, apply it and do it consistently and get to that level? But that just shows you, like, he's one of those, like, free athletes, right? Incredible hands, incredible hand-eye. - I gotta challenge him to a match. - Yes, one on one. - Oh, man. JT versus Ben. - Let's go, JT. - Let's do it here for a second to buy it back. - So who? - Buy that. I'd watch it. - The match. - Aye. - So they say the best hockey player golfer is Pavelski, right? - Yeah. - So JT would be in that conversation, probably. - Yeah. I think JT probably should be in that conversation. - Leading Kellar's up there, too. I know Kellar's got game. - He's gonna drop off now, but he's not in Arizona, though. - I mean, Utah's got some-- - The balls will fly along, but Utah. - I, like, I don't know, because my algorithm just, like, knows I love golf so much, even though I suck at it. It just feeds me, like, golf trip in Utah underrated. Like, they show all these incredible courses through the mountains, I'm like, man, that looks insane. I definitely wanna golf there. But yeah, I would say, not knowing exactly how it went for Murph, but I would imagine underrated golfing with Murph, Miller, and Zadora. I'm sure Zadora's got jokes, and Miller looked like he was half in the bag, too, so. - Austin and Langley, being a surrogate parent to the Euler's Cup Run, graded or underrated. - See, we did, you know what? We went an hour and 40 minutes on the show without it coming up. - Thanks a lot, Austin. - It's just weird, man. Do people in Edmonton have daddy issues? - I don't. - Like, what is going on? You're in the final. - It's like, why are you thinking about the Canucks? - Like, but not. - Okay, so when I first, it's a Mark Spector article that's up at Sportsnet. - Another beauty by spec. Honestly, when you read the piece, it's trying to be complimentary of the challenge that Canucks pose the Emmets North. There's in the regular season and also in the playoffs. - Yes. - And the gist of it is that Canucks got this out of Edmonton, right? That's kind of the gist of the story. Which isn't like, it's not a bad angle. It's just weird when I hear surrogate, parent. What, why? - It was, okay. So I'm not, I guess I got called out for engagement farming earlier this week. So maybe I'll do the same for Mark Spector. Because yes, the article, it kind of, it complements the Canucks in a way. It's like pat on the back. You know, got the guy who started the season as their head coach fired. You brought better out of the Oilers because they committed to a new defensive style that really helped them beat the Canucks eventually in a hard fought seven game series. They weren't dusted again. Very proven by this article. And then they carried that through against Dallas and it should give them a chance here against Florida. So overall it's complimentary. But like, if you're like cooking it up in the lab, how do I get people to read this article? - Yeah. - It's the opening paragraph of the article where he compares the Canucks to a surrogate parent to this, which is like an eye pop exactly. You're like, what the what, what? - My reaction was what? - But it's, yeah, it's, to me, it feels like a way to generate clicks. But yeah, I mean, and Canucks fans are very online, very online. So they'll, you know, they'll oftentimes take the bait. - A hundred percent they'll take the bait. And, you know, in a way, it's kind of funny because like, you are my son now, Ed Hinton. - Wait, what? - It's kind of, it's a very strange thing to think about. Also, I want to feel, like, I want to believe that in Mark Spector's mind, he's being a good teammate for Luke Gazdick and taking some of the heat off of Luke Gazdick for everything that happened earlier this week. - Yeah, perhaps it's just... - It's weird, yeah, it's weird, it's a strange man. I don't know, man, it's like, it's definitely underrated being the surrogate parent of the Edmonton Oilers. - Again, I'm not trying to sit here and say the Vancouver media is the better media or whatever than any other media. But all I know is that the Vancouver media as a whole, and I can't even think of individuals, I don't think have said anything more really nasty about the Oilers' organization, about their players. Like, we may have been critical of certain things they do and stuff, but I don't think there's anything, anything like really untoward towards the market of Edmonton from media people generally or towards your team employers. But there's been a number of us flying from Edmonton. - Yeah. - I mean, you know, I'm just saying, like-- - And say one. - Yeah, for all the talk about, you know, Vancouver media and toxicity or whatever, and how people sometimes try to pretend, like, you know, all those smaller markets like Edmonton, everybody's so nice and friendly. It's like, y'all saying a lot about Vancouver, I'll just leave it at that. - That's wild. - Next one from Nolan, having a week off between the conference finals and the Stanley Cup final. - Underrated. - I don't care what anybody says. It's underrated. - I think it's gonna-- - It's going to make for a better product. - Okay. - The amount of rest that they are getting is going to make for a better product, because usually, like, in the past, and I think the NHL has done a better job of this, but in the past, like, last year Stanley Cup final, Florida gets there, they're, like, broken. And it's not really much of a fight that they can put up against Vegas. So I'm glad both of these teams are relatively healthy. They're getting enough rest, and we can potentially see the best product available on the ice. - I don't disagree. I would say, so this is like where I'm doing a little bit of like, inception here a little bit. - Yes. - So I agree with the idea. - Or maybe not so much the planting the idea. It's more like, you know what? I'm not gonna do a big short reference, okay? But it's like, a credit default swap, maybe a little bit. So I'm going to say your take on that is a bit overrated. So how much is a week going to help players that are going through some pretty significant things? Let's be honest, like, like, for instance, you mentioned the Florida example. Wasn't like, Eckblad had a broken ankle? - Yeah. - Kachuk had a broken sternum. I'm like, what is a one week truly going to do for a lot of these guys that have injuries that need like a month off? - Okay, for those specific injuries, nothing. - Right, and I think those are the ones. I mean, 'cause like, the intensity of it, I don't disagree, I think it's better to have a week off. I'd rather have them be healthy. The impact that a week off is going to have, I think is overrated. - Yeah. - I don't think the impact is going to be that great. - But I know people are going to complain about two days off on the travel days. Like, that's going to help the product. - The product will be better, I think, yes. I don't know if it, again, I just wonder if it's going to help an individual player performance as much, but yeah, energy wise should be better. - I do think you start the regular season earlier so that this doesn't all like lead as far into June as it is. - I think that's far easier said than done. - Sure, probably. But that's just the only way I see it getting better. - Yeah, I think the biggest issue is a lot of American markets don't want to have a ton of home dates early in October, especially with the college football season and NFL season going on. People still kind of back in school and stuff. Like, research shows, stuff shows, like especially hockey, even basketball, like early in October. That's why they always try to, MBA starts late in October and stuff. Like, it's not great. They have a hard time filling those venues. So I think for the gate, which is important, they're going to have a hard time starting the season much sooner. But first week of August, I mean, first week of October, perhaps better than second week of October. - Next one from Andre, strictly based on looks, millionaires jerseys. Overrated, not for me. - Really? - Underrated, I think they're nice. They're cool. I like them. - Here's my hot thing. - There's my hot thing. - You would never want them as the like primary jersey. Stop it. - They are the strictly based on looks, the best jerseys, the Canucks have had. - No. - You think so. - I think so. - That's a crazy take. - That is an awful take. - Strictly based on looks. I just love like the vintage look. I think it looks very, you know, like hockey to me. - I don't mind his take. It's very simple. I don't mind simple. I think simple age as well, generally speaking. And what is it you guys don't like about it? Like I said, ugly, is it the maroon colors? - It would have matched the seats. - They wouldn't even have to change 10,000 stripes of across the arms. - That's what I love. - No, I love it. - It loves two vintage, stupid. No, like the colors, don't like the design. - This is the thing with like seldom used jerseys. People like them for this one off that they've used them. - They get romanticized. - And they get romanticized. - I mean, when it becomes the primary, it is not what you thought it was. And you easily quickly sour on it. - I usually agree with that. - This one, I've just long been a fan of. - See, that's wearing the hat. I like the logo. - Yeah, it's a good logo. - I like the logo. - Yeah, that's what I'm saying, it's underrated. - The logo's fine. - The logo's nice. - A jersey? - It's more Vancouver too. - No, it's a V for Vancouver. - This is like the spaghetti plate, okay? - Spaghetti plate is bad. I all agree with you. - Like love it, black skate jersey, cool. Once in a while, great. Don't make it the primary. People are already tiring of it. It was like the easiest call in the history of jersey changes. People are already tiring of the black skate coming back. - Are they actually? - Yes. - I don't know if they are. - They're clamoring for it in playoffs. - Yeah, people want him or? - I don't know. - They want him more playoffs. - Which is a bad take, I agree. Like my tears are-- - Just like your Vancouver Millionaires jersey, it's also a bad take. - I'm not saying they should switch to it. I'm just saying it's my favorite. - Okay. - He's allowed to have an opinion. - Yeah, you are. - I work here, I have opinions. - Great reference. - Next one, B, media members being a fan of a team and being public about it. Overrated or underrated? - You know what underrated? - Underrated? - Yeah, I think in hockey too, there's all like, oh, you can't be a fan of a team. Why? Like why is hockey unique? Like in NFL, you see it all the times reporters have favorite teams and they still report and talk about it all the time. You see it in soccer, every single analyst. Every single analyst and writer in soccer, big club, small club, they all have a favorite team and they all talk about their favorite team. - Yeah. - There's really, but in hockey for some reason, it's a bit more taboo. - Yes. - I don't know why. The thing with hockey is, why does hockey take itself so seriously? Like seriously, like it's not that serious. It's a game, but people take it so seriously. Oh, you can't say this. Oh, you can't say that. Oh, the code. God, please, the code. Think of the code. - For some reason, I'm reminded of Iliobra's Galove. Why you have to be mad? - Yes. - It's like, tell me a game. And that's kind of what I think about this too. - So I guess it's obviously in reference of Luke Gazdick and his comments earlier this week. The thing about Gazdick's comment is, you're a national analyst on Hockey Night in Canada and you are expected to have objective opinions when you are there. - And hey, but he wasn't there. - What's that? - Gazdick. - He wasn't there when he said this specific comment, but do I think it hurts his credibility a little bit? Sure, when you're a national analyst, there are, to me, different expectations. If you are the regional play-by-play guy for the Chicago White Sox, Hawk Harrelson was a perfect example. I mean, that guy was his home, or his homework could be. It was hilarious. The different home run calls he would have. It's like, "Edwin and Kardashian, left field home run." - And if it was Paul Canerco or something like that, he'd be going nuts. - Oh, Paul Canerco, legend. What a pole, nice pole. I don't know, I was a big Paul Canerco guy. - I would love Paul Canerco. My great second baseman could really run it. He could hit the ball. - And so, in different contexts, I have different feelings about it. In this context, it's overrated. - Next one from basketball, Phil, having the entire league out to get you as a rookie because you are the most popular player and generating revenue and TV ratings that your league has never seen before. - Is this about Caitlyn Clark? - I would assume so. - Man, the Caitlyn Clark stuff, it's so stupid. And by stupid, I mean everybody, people on both sides are just so idiotic on it, right? They make everything into such a big deal. - Yes. - And it's absurd. So, I've seen articles about what was her name, Carter, Kennedy Carter, whatever, who hit her, and who were like, oh, I mean, that's a crime. I'm like, what? That's a crime? - No, like Marty McSorley on Donald Bashir, that was more crime. - I mean, it's a bump. - It's a bump, it's a hard foul. Yeah, was it a flagrant, perhaps, sure? Is it a foul? Yes, did it show a little disrespect, yeah, perhaps? But you guys don't need to write these think pieces about a hard foul and how this person should face legal action because of it, or it's a horrible person. It's a competitive basketball game. And basketball, people get after it sometimes. It's not that big of a deal. And I've seen other people criticizing Caitlyn Clark for being too competitive now. They're like, there's some stuff out there about how in practice she expects more from teammates. And they're like, oh, she's toxic. - Don't we praise Michael Jordan for that? - Exactly, like all the great players. So you have people on both sides being ridiculous about this. - Didn't we praise Nathan McKinnon for making people eat chickpea? - Yeah. - So it's so stupid. - To push them to be their best. - Yeah, the extremes. - She does the same, it's not cool. - The extremes in this argument are idiotic. You're both the same. You're Spider-Man means pointing at each other. You think you're both really smarter. You don't realize how stupid you're being on this whole thing. Like it's idiotic. I love Caitlyn Clark's game. Has there been some nastiness from some players? Yeah, sure. Is this from jealousy? I'm sure there is. Like those things do happen. - It's also like, hey, you know, she's bringing a ton of new eyeballs to your game. She's the reason, part of the reason. Like, look, the NBA was coming along very well in the last couple of years before Caitlyn Clark anyways. But, you know, now they've got their chartered flights. Like the game is taking to another level and you're getting, you know, first take is talking about Caitlyn Clark and all these things in a way that they never used to before. So this is a recognition that this league is getting that they have not before. And I mean, should there be an appreciation of Caitlyn Clark from the rest of the league? - I'm not so sure. Like I understand it. Like, hey, rookie, we're gonna treat you differently. We've seen this in the NHL before. Like, Sydney Crosby shows up. Oh, you think you know everything? Like, well, we'll make sure that you don't. - Yeah, sure. - And you know that you don't. So I get it, to a certain extent, is as part of athletes being competitive. The extra that's come out of it has been quite a lot, as you mentioned. - There is some, you know, I think there's also some stereotype in going on as well and be like, well, look at these women. Now, women aren't getting along or whatever. Like, are you guys ridiculous? Do you not see how what happens in men's sports? Like, don't you see this happening in men's side all the time? If you'll make it out to be a women thing. And I'm like, it's insane. Again, the commentary on this on the extremes, it's absolutely insane. - I will end with the water bottle section. - Yes. - All right, I was waiting for this. So we got Sippy Cups overrated, underrated. - I'm gonna say underrated. I might, I'm definitely buying a Sippy Cup accessory. - JD, for my next water bottle. - Got a camel back. - Chester Ming on Twitter was saying you should get a camel back. For those wondering what a camel back is, it's like a pouch that has like a runner's drawer. - I'm gonna come to work with one of those runners backpacks. - Yeah. - Be sick. - Fill up the bag. - JD, water bottles at work. Overrated or underrated? - I mean underrated, you know, when you do talk radio and without a water bottle, your voice can go pretty quickly. I'll tell you that much. - Having a rough day today? - No, it's a... - Does he have your wallet of water? - Justin and East Van, who made a wonderful edit, by the way. (laughing) - Or cowbell thing. - Or cowbell thing? - Yeah. - You crushed me. - Securing your water bottle lid. Overrated or underrated? - Clearly underrated. - Yeah, clearly underrated. Make sure to fixate the lid onto the bottle after filling it. - And you know what else is underrated? Bottle placement. - Yes. - Yeah. - Don't put it behind your laptop. - You know, reach, like putting it out of your reach is probably not a gross idea. - It's probably not a gross idea. - To me, rather than like away from me, would have been smart. - Over top of your laptop. You have to reach over your laptop to get it. - And also grab by the bottle, not by the lid. - High type being 2020, it's kind of good that you didn't lift it a little bit and have it over your laptop. - Oh yeah, could you imagine? Oh, that would have been a disaster. It was a disaster. - Crypto cow, spill proof water tumblers. I'm assuming I'm good. - Sure, they're great. Never tried one. - Great for toddlers. - And we'll end with this one. You've been against them in the past. - Lee, cup holders, overrated or underrated? - Does this change your perspective? - Yeah, cup holders, you know, wouldn't have helped in this scenario. - Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. - If we had cup holders. - Hold on, hold on, hold on. It wouldn't have mattered. How do you knock over a water boulder with a cutting holder? - Colder holders in a radio studio. - To the right of you. - You're right hanging off the, hanging off the side. - You're like a holster? - Yeah. - We sit on raised chairs. Like our feet hang down. There's plenty of space under the table. - We'll just have to get one just for you. - Yeah, since buying a-- - You're just going with the, there's nothing I could do. That water bottle is falling over and over and over. - Since buying a push cart for my golf bag, I've come around to cup holders because it's quite valuable. - Oh yeah. - A cup holder on the push cart. - Finally come around, have you? - Yeah. - A cup holder guy now. - You were against the push cart for a while too. - Hey, you and Dom made fun of me. - New informational. I'm allowed to change my tape. - True and care, it's a mature way of approaching life. It's true. (laughing) All right, we're way like, man, that water bottle. (laughing) I'm never gonna recover from this. It's gonna be a whole summer of just taking jokes like this. All right, for producers Ben and Josh, my co-host sat. I'm Dan and of course you the listener. We appreciate you on Knock Central.
