This is AP News, I'm Rita Folle. It was 80 years ago today, D-Day, U.S. and allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in battles that led to the end of Hitler's Germany. President Biden, other world leaders, and veterans of that invasion are in France this morning. The AP's Sagar McGonney. President Biden has marked D-Day's anniversary in France with a call to stand strong with Ukraine amid Russian aggression. At the American cemetery in Normandy, overlooking one of the beaches where allied forces came ashore 80 years ago, the president said Europe is again under threat. And like the greatest generation, this one must fight back. "To surrender to bullies, to bow down to dictators, is simply unthinkable." And abandoning Ukraine would mean forgetting what happened in Normandy. "We will not walk away." The president said the D-Day anniversary provides a strong reminder, World War II was not one alone. Alliances make everyone stronger. "A lesson that I pray, we Americans never forget." Sagar McGonney, Washington. Now to another war. Overnight an Israeli strike on Gaza killed more than 30 people. When it hit a school turned shelter run by the UN, according to officials, Israel says Hamas was using the school. A tornado slammed into suburban Detroit, the AP's Donna Warder. "A tornado struck without warning Wednesday afternoon in suburban Detroit. The twister tore through several neighborhoods in Livonia, Michigan, bringing a tree down onto a house where a woman and her two-year-old were sleeping. The child was killed." And at Hunter Biden's gun trial, his lawyer told the judge the defense will file a motion today challenging the prosecution's case. This is AP News. The U.S. is keeping an eye on Russian warships that are heading to the Caribbean. Senior Biden administration officials say the U.S. is tracking Russian warships and aircraft as they head to military exercises expected in the Caribbean in coming weeks. The ships may also make port calls in Venezuela and Cuba as Russia establishes a Western Hemisphere military presence. The officials call it notable, but not concerning. It's not the first time Russia has sent its ships to the Caribbean, but it's taking place as President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow could take asymmetrical steps in response to President Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S. provided weapons to strike inside Russia to defend Harkiv. At a news conference Wednesday, Putin warned Russia could provide long-range weapons to enable others to strike Western targets.
