This is AP News. I'm Rita Folle. New jobs report just out. Employers added a robust 272,000 jobs in May. Assign the economy still strong. Millions of Americans are sweating in miserable heat. The AP's Ben Thomas. Temperatures have been soaring in Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona, topping 110 degrees in places. The National Weather Service has extended an excessive heat alert until Friday evening across roughly half of those three states. It says Phoenix is experiencing dangerously high conditions, hitting a new record high of 113. At a Trump campaign rally in the city Thursday, 11 people fell ill from heat exhaustion and were taken to the hospital. All were treated and later released. I'm Ben Thomas. We're sees now where world leaders have been meeting in France to remember D-Day in World War II, 80 years ago. But another war is on some minds. President Biden has, for the first time, publicly apologized to Ukraine's leader for a month's long holdup in sending more American military aid. The delay in getting an aid package through Congress led to Russia making battlefield gains as they met in Paris. The president assured Volodymyr Zelensky more aid will flow and the US will stand with Ukraine. As Ukraine tries to fight off an intense Russian push in the East, Zelensky says American backing is vital. Today, President Biden is also appearing a point to Hawk, a legendary spot along the French coast, where on D-Day, Army Rangers scaled cliffs under fire during the World War II invasion.
