And welcome to this week's Rithers Raggle Riz with me, Michael Tundeman, King River. And this week's rivalry, we will be bringing you the Arizona Cardinals versus the Los Angeles Rams. Now, before I get into this rivalry, I've had a good year and a week, we've put some long days in and pretty much famously, every night that I got in, you're having some of the date, I'm going to show it and then famously, back up at five o'clock in the morning. But that's been meaning that this episode has been a bit delayed, which I apologize for. I don't like, you know, make sense, it's the off-season, it's all a bit more late, but personally, I don't, you know, like letting people down. If I say I'm going to get something done by a certain day, you know, I would generally like to achieve. I put, you know, works go in the way and today, I'm actually recording this on Saturday morning, like very early Saturday morning, because, you know, as a lot of sort of stroke again, I was supposed to be in work today and kind of went down to the train station, go on the train, sit on the train, take it out, shoot yourself, pay me headphones in, so there wasn't an announcement, but I missed it, so I thought I'd just sit and maybe send a set off shortly. So I sat there for about 15 minutes, 20 minutes, next minute, next announcement comes up with the trains, heavily delayed due to another train being delayed, I don't know what the reason was, but to, you know, cut it short, I went through, you know, the next train's times, and same what time I would actually get there and what time I would get there with this delay and I would only be in work for an hour and a half, because I was supposed to be finished at 11, so I thought there's no point actually going in, so I just got off the train, and you know, it only paid for me ticket, you know, I was sitting on the train, and as I was going out, I thought, you know, usually I wouldn't even bother, but I thought I'm going to get a refund on this ticket, so I went a little booth with a little, a little man sits, that sells the tickets, and I said, hey mate, bought this ticket for that train, I know I went through and sat on the train, but the delays are much that it's not good, so I thought, oh, lady, can I have a refund, and he was like, well, you've already went through the scanner, I was like, just explained, the train's still sat there on the bloody platform, I want a refund, so, you know, I stand, I think, it's only going to be one of the days where the lord of salt strikes again, but I got my refund, and as I stepped out of the train station, the morning turned absolutely beautiful, it's going to be an absolute fantastic day, it sends out, it's red hot, luckily I have me emergency pouch in me bag, so I am missing glasses on, I got a little one heater, that's fully loaded, ready to go in there, I had a refund off my train ticket, which I used to buy a breakfast at Timon's, went and sent myself in the park, and yeah, along south of the river, there's a, had a breakfast and a little, little dude, the weather was perfect, you know, it was nice and peaceful, being not early in the morning, yeah, it was good, so I was sitting there, you know, the lord of salt has struck, I can't get into work, I'm not going in the overtime, so I'm not actually going to get in trouble for knock on the rabbit's, kick off, I'm not actually going to get in trouble for knock on in, so, is the lord of salt actually struck, or is this one of them situations where I finally got one over on the lord of salt, and I think it is, finally, finally, I have got one over on the lord of salt, I do not reverse the lord of salt, what could have been a disaster, turns out to be quite a really good dip, so without further ado, let's get into these cardinals versus rams rivalry, and this is a rivalry between the cardinals and rams, and it's one of the oldest matchups in the league, and these two teams first met June, the early stages of the NFL, in 1937, where the cardinals were located in Chicago, and the rams were located in Cleveland. Now, currently the distance between State Farm Stadium and SoFi Stadium is 375 miles apart, mostly along the I-10, which is interstate 10, the southernmost transcontinental highway in the state highway system, there you go, didn't know that, so you'll learn something new every week on this show. There is a total of 92 meetings between these two teams, and we will go through a decade by decade. Now, there's not much documented on like in the way of match reports for the early years, but you know, I've got a list of the results and a few reports that I've found scattered about, so I'll see where I can get out of this. So, the cardinals and rams are some of the oldest surviving members of the NFL, and the Chicago Cardinals, originally formed in 1898, and the Cleveland rams were an expansion team that joined in 1936. Early on, both teams were pitted against each other in what was then the NFL Western Division. Both clubs saw personal struggles during World War II, as the neither team posted a winning season until 1994, 944, and the rams and cardinals would combine for two NFL champion chips in the rams in 1945 and the cardinals in 1947, the latter for the cardinals being the most recent championship that they have won. So, after 1950 match ups between these two teams weren't regular, again, until the division realignment in 2002, and rams then on Dan Reeves, previously relocated the team from Chicago. The rams on shifted the team from Cleveland to Los Angeles following the 1946 season, and the cardinals would shift to the American conference from 1950 to 1952, before encountering financial difficulties throughout the 1950s, ultimately leading them to relocate St. Louis in 1960 as part of a bid for the league to prevent the AFL team from taking the centre of the market. The cardinals would struggle mightily throughout the decades following their loan, the last championship in 1947, and would not make a playoff appearance until 1974, due to the shifting divisions and the reorganisation following the merger with the AFL. The rams and the cardinals only met three times before between 1960 and 1968. Now, I've got a list of all the games played and the other results from 1947 to 1968, and I was going to go through and see if I can find some significant results, I'm really going to match reports on them, but oh god, here's where I'm going to get mixed up. Right, so it's the Chicago cardinals, the first meeting between the cardinals and the rams, the Chicago cardinals beat the Cleveland rams. I forget that right here. Yeah, yeah, I have. So, the Chicago cardinals beat the rams in the first meeting, 6-0, and yeah, the winners saw a four game win streak there that ended in a 24-0 win for the Cleveland rams over the Chicago cardinals. I'm doing my best day not to get these all mixed up. So, they went on, the Cleveland rams went on a three game win streak, and then it's back and forth and I'm starting to see by looking at these results why there isn't really any much reports because the results are 3-7, 0-7, 0-7, 0, you know, there's not many high scoring, what it looks like is we're doing very exciting games. There, there's where the cardinals zero rams 21 in 1945. The final game between the Cleveland rams and the Chicago cardinals again it was in 1945 and it was the rams 35 to the cardinals 21. So, the rams were in the last matchup before they moved to St Louis. No, not St Louis, Los Angeles, this full rivalry is full of this, this is the theme of this rivalry. So, the first matchup between the LA rams and the Chicago cardinals, oh my god it's gone, LA rams and Chicago cardinals was 34-10 in 1946 in favour of the cardinals and then after that, you know, the game started getting a bit better. Yeah, a lot more competitive scoring but it finished 27-24, a couple of tie games 28-28-24-24. Well, my name is again, so in 1958 was the final game between the Los Angeles rams and the Chicago cardinals and that finished in favour of the rams 20-14. Now, in 1960, the first game between the St Louis cardinals and the Los Angeles rams ended in the St Louis cardinals winning 43-21. And that brings us up to the 70s with where the teams now are the San Luis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams. Ooh, I think we're all right now for a bit. Look up in there. So, the Cardinals are San Luis Rams. Here we go. So, in the 70s, the two franchise took very different paths during the 1970s. And the Cardinals made back-to-back divisional round appearances in '74 and '75, while the Rams would make continuous policies and appearances from 1973 to 1979. These playoff appearances included the 1975 divisional round match-up against the Cardinals. And it's the first postseason match-up between these two. And the Rams defense scored two touchdowns in the first half, while running back Lonnes McKeown. Run for a NFL playoff record, 202 yards and 37 cutters. Los Angeles started the game off with a 79-yard scalden drive. And the Cardinals were extremely on match against the Rams defenses, called Buck Jim Hart, through a critical interception that was retained for the pick six. Hart would finish the game with three interceptions, and the Rams were well beyond our reach. And that game finished earlier Rams '85, and sent the Cardinals 23. Two teams met again in 1979 season, but the Rams dominated the game, shooting out the Cardinals 21-0. They had the Rams. You're wearing a aspiring playoff contender throughout the 1970s, but go on to lose four straight consecutive championship games, and lose an appearance in Super Bowl 14. The Cardinals did not fare well. During the 1980s, as the Rams go on to post a six-game win streak in the series from 1979 to 1987. The Cardinals would also make their only playoff appearance of the decade in 1982, post-season, but they failed against the Packers. The Rams, meanwhile, were significantly competitive throughout the 1980s, despite unstoppable ownership of the Fightful Los Angeles market with the Raiders relocating to Los Angeles in 1982. The Rams made seven post-season appearances in the 1980s, but went on to lose twice in the conference championship, to the 1985 Bears and the 1989-49ers. The Cardinals did not post a winning record for 1983 to 1998, and the club grew unsatisfied with the Edge in Bush Stadium, Bush Stadium, meaning to relocate to Phoenix, Arizona in 1988. So now we've got the Arizona Cardinals and the LA Rams, which is, you know, it should be, but no, for some reason, Rams owner George Frontier decided that in 1995 they would want to relocate because the Rams were becoming less relevant, monthly declining attendance, and, you know, they decided to relocate the Santa Louis to fill the void that was left of the Cardinals. So now we've got the Santa Louis Rams and the Arizona Cardinals. So the Cardinals struggled throughout most of the decade, but somehow slipped through, slipped into the playoffs in 1998 with a 9-7 record, pulled off a win over the Cowboys. However, they fell against the new Tarius in 1998, Minnesota Vikings. Ah, well, it's, you know, we had a quarterback, Randall Cunningham, running back Robert Smith, you know, wide receiver Chris Carter and the rookie year for Randy Moss. Back in that year week, we probably should have won the silver ball if it wasn't for you, done dirty birds in the championship game, but yeah, yeah, got a little bit distracted there. Ah, yeah, the Rams say, yeah, they didn't do too great in '98, and they, so, posted the season back around in '99, we'd have 13 free record, winning the Super Bowl for E4. So in the 2000s, 2002, the Santa Louis Rams and the Arizona Cardinals were realigned back into the division, which remained today still in the same division, and the Rams remained competitive briefly, but never began the level of playoff success, and they experienced at the beginning of the decade. As they would not make a playoff appearance from 2005 to 2016, the Cardinals also turned their own fortunes around later in the decade, following the hiring of Ken Wissenhood in 2007, and reached a high point in the franchise, the following season by winning the NFC West, and making the first Super Bowl appearance in the franchise history, but they fell short to the Steelers. Ironically, the Cardinals revived their playoff ambitions with their former Rams quarterback and Super Bowl winner and NFL MVP co-runner. The Cardinals would only manage another wildcard berth, but not return to the postseason until 2014. Meanwhile, the Santa Louis Rams bombed out with a terrible 115 record in 2009. Both teams had a decade of rebuilding in 2010s, and the Rams attempted to turn the team around with court Jeff Fischer, but were not there, possibly much beyond Mediocre 7-9 record 2013 and 2015 seasons. The Cardinals found themselves thriving under general manager Steve Kean, and a coach Bruce Arians brought them to a 10-6 record in the first two seasons with the team and led them to playoffs in 2014. The Cardinals also traded quarterback Carson Palmer, and a result that went 13 and 3 managed a trip to the 2015 NFC championship where they fell short to the Carolina Panthers. Following the 2015 season, the Rams would relocate back to Los Angeles, so now we're back at the LA Rams and the Arizona Cardinals, and they would take quarterback Jared Gough, first overall, in that year's draft. The Rams would post a poor 4-12 record for the first season, back in earlier, but then we're going to make a poor season with a 11-5 record following the height of new coach Steve McVear. In 2017, these two teams met in Twickenham in London, in the international game, where the Rams kicker fielded four field goals, one of 53 yards, Jack Gough got two touchdowns, running back, told Curly, run for the 106 yards, and they scored a touchdown, and the Rams defense came away with two interceptions to earn a 33-0 shootout to the Rams. And this was the first of what was the 7th straight victory over the Cardinals under the head coach, Sean McVear, Cardinals quarterback, Carson Palmer, exited the game in the second quarter, and it broke down, and was replaced by Joe Stanton, and Palmer missed the final nine games, and as a result, eventually retired in early January 2018. In the 2020s, so we were now back at the LA Rams in the Arizona Cardinals, the decade began strong for both. The Cardinals broke out to a 6-3 record by Week 9, one game ahead of the Rams, and were on 5-3, but that was just like due to a bi-week. However, the only managed to win the remaining four out of seven games due to a couple of upset losses to the 49ers, and the Jets and the Rams lost control of the division following their loss by another crucial rivalry match, and ultimately the division lead to the Seattle Seahawks. Arizona would fare even worse as they lost five of seven games, and finished the season tied for the lost remaining wildcard spot with the Chicago Bears. So the Rams and the Cardinals met due in that week, Week 17 in Los Angeles, and the Rams had to bench staff quarterback, took off due to a full injury, and had a force to start at John Wolford. Despite a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, the Rams were going to humiliate the Cardinals, scoring 18 unanswered points in their crucial defeat, and the loss would give the remaining wildcard spot to the Bears, eliminating the Cardinals. The 2021 season started with several drastic changes as the Rams had traded Jared Koff, with Detroit, and got mafia stuff at it, and the Cardinals started the season 7 and 0, which had included a 37-20 win over the Rams in Los Angeles, ending their eight-game win streak over Arizona. The Rams ended the Monday night match up in Arizona with an eight-and-four record, as Arizona boasted a 10-and-two record. However, the Rams won the game in Glensdale 30-23 in a hard-fought battle that saw Kyle Munifro two interceptions, one crucially turning the ball over in the fourth quarter, allowing the Rams to take the lead, and eventually win. The Rams came back to win the division while the Cardinals fell out to a wildcard spot. With the two facing off in the wildcard round of the playoffs, during the wildcard game the Cardinals were again quickly outgunned by the Ramses, they were outscored 21-0 by half-time. During the third quarter they had runned back Kamakas. He unintentionally collided with Cardinals safety Buddha Baker, and during the run, and Akas was unaware that Baker had suffered a concussion, and was unable to get back up, and he prayerfully taunted him following the play, and followed the arrival of medical personnel. Yeah, Akas expressed his regret for the celebration, and tweeted an apology for his taunt, and expressed his support for Baker's recovery after the game. And despite Murray's best efforts, during the second half, the Rams were gone to crush the Cardinals 34-11 in the Cardinals' first postseason appearance since 2015, and eventually win. Now just to make everything else even more confusing as well, both of these teams have played in the Missouri Governor's Cup, also known as the Chiefs and Rams rivalry, all Cardinals and Chiefs rivalry. It was a trophy awarded to the winner of the game between Missouri's two NFL teams, and the first meeting of this was in 1970, where the Kansas City Chiefs played. He sent the Cardinals that ended in the tie 6-6. And the Chiefs would play for this trophy up until 1988, when the Cardinals relocated to Arizona. Then in 1996, when the Los Angeles Rams relocated to St. Louis, the Governor's Cup would resume with both the Rams and the Chiefs from 1986 to 2015. So, give it some stats. There's been 92 meetings between these two teams, and the all-time series of Rams lead with a 50-40 and two ties. The largest victory for the Rams came in 2017 with a 34-0, and the largest victory for the Cardinals came also in 2017, near the 44-6 victory. The longest winning streak for both teams is eight, and let's see, simple championships. Rams have won two, but four altogether, if you come just champions and Super Bowls, and Cardinals have won two conference championships, the Cardinals have won one, Rams have won five divisional championships, Cardinals have won seven, they've won two in the NFL, Western, two in the NFC East, and two in the NFC West. The Rams have won 18, they've won in the NFL, Western, the NFL, Coastal, we won two of a piece in them, and all the rest was in the NFC West. And that will be me for this week. Next week, I've got a bonus episode, which I'm very excited about, I like these bonus episodes. Last time I brought your quarterback versus quarterback. This time, I'm going to bring you a defensive line versus everyone else's rivalries. Yeah, it's been bringing you a bonus episode. This now is covered. I've done one rivalry from every division, which is what I wanted to do first. I wanted to get at least one of every divisional rivalry out of there. Anyway, I think I've missed quite a few off, which I know I have, but the reason for that is them teams are coming later on in my conference rivalries. And also, they mixed conference rivalries. I didn't want to overdo one team, so that's why I've done it this way. I picked the ones that I have to so I can get as many teams covered as possible. So next week, I will be bringing you a defensive line versus everyone else's rivalry in my top 10, might even be a top 15 or 20 to be honest, because there's loads of them. And this is why I wanted to bring this one now. I've got quite a few bonus episodes planned, but this one, the last one was quarterback versus quarterback. Then two players are not on the pitch at the same time. These rivalries between defensive line and everyone else, this rivalry is going to be a lot more heated and a lot more, a lot more fiery, but it's uh... soon or further ado, I hope you guys have a good rest of your week, everybody, and I will get this next episode out to you as soon as I can.
