If he news for Friday, June 14, I'm Ben Thomas. The Supreme Court has struck down a ban on rapid fire rifle bump stocks. Harlansey Whitehurst explains the ruling. The Supreme Court's conservative majority found the Justice Department under President Trump had overstepped its authority when it classified bump stocks as illegal machine guns. That was a change from previous administrations. The High Court found that bump stocks don't qualify as machine guns because each pull of the trigger still discharges only one round, even if those rounds are coming very quickly. Speaker Mike Johnson says the House will go to court to enforce the subpoena against Attorney General Merrick Garland for access to audio of President Biden's special counsel interview. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is rejecting a true software from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Conditions include Ukraine withdrawing from four regions Moscow has annexed and dropping its bid to join NATO. Zelensky calls it an ultimatum, likening it to Hitler's demands for territory that led to World War II. Sagar Magani reports the U.S. Navy is locked in its most intense running sea battle since World War II. "I don't think people really understand just kind of how deadly serious it is what we're doing." Commander Eric Blomberg and the destroyer USS LeBoon are not facing a global power like Russia or China, but rather the Iran-backed Houthi rebels who have launched nearly daily attacks for months in the Red Sea. Jets from the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower and the LeBoon's firepower have scrambled to take out Houthi drones and missiles aimed at civilian vessels and warships. The U.S. and its partners are trying to both protect a vital commercial shipping lane and themselves with little margin for error. "We only have to get it wrong once or who these just have to get one through that we mess up and it's devastating." I'm Sagar Magani. This is AP News. Pope Francis' celebrating humor at the Vatican. "More than 100 comedians from 15 countries were there, including Whoopi Goldberg." "It was great. It was very fast and really loving and maybe happy." The Pope told the audience they have the power to spread peace and smiles. He said so. "We all laugh. We have more smiles. Thank you for your message." Conan O'Brien's brief visit with the Pope was hard to understand the Pope's spoken Italian. "He might have just angrily shited me. I don't know." Stephen Colbert knows some Italian. "My Italian is not sure if the Pope knew what he was trying to say." And he said like this, give me a hand. The Pope also said it's okay to laugh at God in the same way we play and joke with the people we love. I'm Ed Donahue. And I'm Ben Thomas, AP News. Thanks for listening.
