AP News, I'm Ben Thomas, a new Republican voter monitoring effort is drawing criticism. Norman Hall explains. The Republican National Committee has rolled out an initiative to mobilize thousands of polling place monitors, poll workers and attorneys in swing states. RNC co-chair Laura Trump launched the effort in Bloomville Hills, Michigan, a Detroit suburb. "What we need to ensure is integrity in our electoral process." The National Party says it hopes to recruit 100,000 volunteers. Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey says Republicans attempted to bully election workers in 2020. "Those are unacceptable at actions and tactics and they certainly won't happen again." RNC Chairman Michael Watley says the committee will place election integrity directors in 15 states, including the most hotly contested battlegrounds. I'm Norman Hall. Next speaker, Mike Johnson, says the House will move in court to enforce the subpoena against Attorney General Merrick Garland for access to President Biden's special counsel audio interview over his handling of classified documents. In a letter to Johnson earlier in the day, the Justice Department refused to prosecute Republicans' contempt of Congress charge against Garland. The Supreme Court struck down a Trump-era ban on bump stocks, a gun accessory that enabled the weapon to fire at a rate comparable to machine guns. Lindsay Weiter's reports the court was sharply divided. The court split along ideological lines in the ruling, with the three liberal justices dissenting. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who wrote for the liberals, said that this ruling could hamstring the federal government as it considers future gun restriction. Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposed an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and to begin negotiations. But there are conditions. Kyiv must start withdrawing troops from the four regions Moscow annexed two years ago and renounce plans to join NATO. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky rejected it as an ultimatum comparing it to actions by Adolf Hitler that led to World War II. This is AP News. In California, nearly 400 pelicans have been rescued since April. Dozens of rehabilitated brown pelicans were released in the San Francisco Bay after a mysterious illness led to reports of hundreds of starving and sick pelicans all over California this spring. These were treated for severe malnutrition. Russ Curtis speaks person for the international bird rescue says lots of theories everything from you know climate change affecting the ocean environment storms that may have stirred up the water too much for the anchovies. While brown pelicans are no longer endangered, wildlife experts say they're in an important part of the shoreline ecosystem. The birds are telling us there's something wrong in the environment and the canary in the coal man sort of fits for this as well. You workers say they'll continue to release pelicans that remain in their care as they become healthy enough to go back into the wild. I'm Lisa Dwyer and I'm Ben Thomas, AP News.
