AP News. I'm Ed Donoghue. On the 4th of July, President Biden was talking on local radio shows in Philadelphia and Wisconsin. It was one week ago today, the president struggled in a debate in Atlanta. I didn't have a good debate. That's 90 minutes on stage. Look at what I've done in 3.5 years. I've led the economy back from the brink of collapse. It's still improving. We have more to do. I lower prescription drug prices. On the Earl Ingram show on Civic Media in Wisconsin, the president says he's staying in the race. To defeat Donald Trump, this guy questioned George Floyd's humanity. Led to the birthing movement against Barack Obama. You know, this guy said, Barack Obama, that black guy. He wasn't born in America and he kept it going, lying like hell. St. Anselm's political science professor Chris Galdieri in New Hampshire says the president needs to do more public events. Public events where he can make the case that that was a bad night, not the new normal. And I think, you know, if that's going to be an uphill fight for him. Robert Woodland, a Russia-born U.S. citizen, was convicted of drug-related charges by a Moscow court and sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison. An Israeli official says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will dispatch negotiators to resume Gaza ceasefire talks. A monitoring group says the Israeli government approved plans to build nearly 5,300 new homes and settlements in the occupied West Bank. Defending champion Mickey Sudo won the women's division at the annual Nathan's famous 4th of July hot dog eating contest on Coney Island. For the men, defending champion Joey Chestnut will not be eating. Currently holds the world record of an astounding 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. But Joey endorsed a rival brand. That brand is impossible foods, which makes plant-based hot dogs. Major league eating's George Shea says Chestnut will compete against soldiers at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, in a five-minute hot dog eating contest. This is AP News. Today is a day for people to get away. Americans are expected to shatter travel records over the July 4th holiday week. People are jamming airports and crowding highways to get where they're going. The TSA says a record-breaking number of people, nearly 3 million, traveled through airports in a single day last week. And that figure is expected to be broken this week. The AAA expects more than 60 million of us will travel by car during the holiday period. Gas is 351 a gallon on average today, just about a couple of cents cheaper than last July 4th. While the traveling now, well, part of the reason is said to be money. Easing inflation, though many Americans remain concerned about the economy. I'm Rita Folle. The International Swimming Federation says its executive director has been ordered to testify in a U.S. criminal investigation into the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance in 2021, but were allowed to continue competing. I'm Ed Donahue, AP News.
