AP News, I'm Ed Donahue, Texas Congressman Lloyd Doggett is the first Democrat to go public to say President Biden should step aside in the 2024 presidential race. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said earlier, she believes it's a legitimate question whether the president's performance at last week's debate is just an episode or a condition. At the White House, press secretary Corinne Jean-Pierre says the message has been received. "We understand. It was a bad night. It is not uncommon for incumbents to have a bad night on their first debate. And we are going to continue to do the work that we have been doing on behalf of the American people." There are heat advisories in many places and President Biden is proposing a new rule to protect workers from the heat. The AP's Sankar Magani is at the White House. "The president says extreme heat is the nation's top weather-related killer." "More people die from extreme heat than floods, hurricanes and tornadoes combined." And his administration's moving to help shield 36 million people on the job, from construction workers to mail carriers. "This includes things like developing response plans to heat illness, training employees and supervisors, implementing rest breaks." On a visit to Washington, D.C.'s Emergency Operations Center, the president laid out other steps as administrations taking to battle extreme weather and blasted Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers who deny climate change exists. "I quite frankly think it's not only outrageous. It's really stupid." Sagar Magani at the White House. Former President Donald Trump's sentencing in his hush money trial in New York has been pushed back to September after yesterday's Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. Fed Chair Jerome Powell says the economy is moving closer to its inflation goal, but no rate cut yet. "We have the ability to take our time and get this right." Docs are higher at the close. This is AP News. The government is paying Moderna to develop a pandemic flu vaccine. " Moderna is getting 176 million dollars from the Department of Health and Human Services to accelerate development of a pandemic influenza vaccine that would be used to treat bird fluin people. Officials say the project can be quickly redirected to target another form of influenza if a different threat than the H5N1 form of bird flu emerges. That virus was detected earlier this year in dairy cows, and three people have been infected. But officials say the threat to the general population remains low. Mike Empen, Washington. Ann Wilson leads singer The Rock Band Hart says she has cancer. Hart is postponing the remaining shows on its royal flush tour while she undergoes treatment. Wilson says this is merely a pause.
