AP News for Friday, June 28th. I'm Ben Thomas. The debate won over. The presidential candidates are back on the attack. Former President Trump in Virginia. No amount of rest or rigging could help him defend his atrocious record. President Biden in North Carolina. I'd give him my words of Biden. I would not be running again if I didn't believe. With all my heart and soul, I can do this job. The University of Michigan's Aaron Collins' Biden could recover from his rough debate. We could revert back to forum to where people really don't start paying attention closely until after Labor Day when they get back from vacation. And that happens to be when the next debate is occurring. But yes, it's going to be tough in the next few weeks. The Supreme Court's made it harder to charge capital riot defendants with obstruction proof needed they tampered with or destroying documents. The High Court also allowing cities to enforce bans on sleeping outside Seattle City Attorney Ann Davison. That restores authority back to locally elected leaders for them to make the decisions about what is best for their unique communities. But in each are Freeman who's been homeless since the policies just aren't helping. Instead of pushing on the federal government to let them sweep more, they should be pushing on the federal government to fund housing, to change housing policies, to have universal health care, to do all the things that will lower homelessness nationwide. A lengthy sentence in Texas, Lisa Dwyer has the story. 35-year-old George Alvarez was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter in the deaths of eight people struck by the SUV he was driving at a crowded bus stop outside a migrant shelter in Brownsville, Texas. Alvarez was also convicted on 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities say Alvarez lost control of his vehicle after running a red light in May 2023 and that he had cocaine in his system. Alvarez was sentenced to 60 years in prison. I'm Lisa Dwyer. This is AP News. Devout Catholics are making a nationwide pilgrimage. Walter Ratliff has her story. A paddle boat makes its way among the smokestacks and bridges of the city of Steubenville along the Ohio River. What makes this boat special to Catholic followers is what's aboard and the mission of the journey. Bishop Mark Brennan. A lot of our own Catholic people were not so sure about the nature of Holy Communion. Those conversations sparked a national pilgrimage to promote what the Eucharist actually is according to Catholic doctrine. It's a mystery because it still looks like bread, tastes like wine, but our faith really is him. Zoe Dangus has spent weeks on the pilgrimage. Visiting different parishes, getting to walk 15 miles a day sometimes, bringing him to our country and let him bless our people. These pilgrims are among others taking a two month journey on four routes across the United States. I'm Walter Ratliff. And I'm Ben Thomas, AP News.
