There's a couple of shots, you know, let's think about golf. You hit like two or three good ones, hook, line, and sinker. That bit will just drag you back. And it so happened to be the best shot of my game today. The best shot of the day. Happened on hole 18. Yeah, the very last one. You said it was the best for last time. The very last one. It only took 17 holes for me to warm up, you know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? But straight off the T, it's great. I mean, that's great, but you know, it was good. Then my iron game. Straight lay up on the outskirts of the green. Chipped it right next to the pin. About T-yard putt. And for part of, man, it was nice. It was nice. Finish her in the par four. Yeah, I'm hooked. I'm a straight golfer now. You know what they go. I don't think I'll pick up the pigskin ever. Pick it up ever again. I'm retired. Oh, really? I think I'm retired from Hoopin. I think I'm strictly a volleyball and golfer. golfer. Yeah, I'm past the... You're gonna break it to the punks. I'm past the string U.S. activity on the body type of activities. Like I'm getting past that age or the recovery time. I know you could still twist an ankle in volleyball. I've yet to do it. But I understand and see how and why you could. But it's more of a fucking possibility to twist my ankle playing basketball. Yeah, no doubt. And you know, you could always... And I could, you could take your ACL and play volleyball too, but you know, football is a lot easier for you to yeah, yeah. You know what I'm saying? Get that motherfucker, eat it out there and that's it for, you know, this ball. Even flag football. Yeah, even flag. If I get hurt and flagged it, you could already chalk it up for five months and I'm just... I'm laid up. Can't be having that. See, I even got injured in an ordinary, weird ways just playing flag football. That's kind of why I had to stop for... You haven't been doing this going to happen, especially when we get up here. I mean, the elbow, the hairline fracture, soft tissue damage, were you there for that? I don't think you were actually. It just sounds nasty. And he was actually our quarterback in this situation. Yeah. I ran an out route towards the sideline running full blast. It was a little bit of an overthrow. I mean, I'm not sure if he remembers this, but you know, it is what it is. It happens. It was just going to be a regular overthrow. You know, nothing crazy about it. Go back to the huddle bang. We connect on the next play like we always did. But it just so happened that we had some spectators, you know, some fans of the other team that were sitting there in lawn chairs. Yeah. And I had a choice. Bulldoze over these girls because that's the thing. They were all ladies. Or do what I can to try to jump over them. That's exactly what I did. I literally launched over them like a high jump. Like, except, you know, I dove over them, I should say. It wasn't like I actually, you know, did the form of a high jump. I dove over them. But I landed right on my elbow, my left elbow and didn't finish playing the game, you know, got right back up, went and finished, literally scored a touchdown relatively quick after that. I remember thinking, you know, I'm okay because of that. Like, I didn't think that it was actually, you know, going to stop me from playing. But it did hurt me pretty bad. I will say I had to go get an x-ray that Thursday, right? We were playing on Sunday. Yeah. I kind of just tried to tough it out over the next couple days. I got off of work because my arm was purple. But I just thought that it was like, you know, I messed up my arm. I didn't think that it was anything too serious. And eventually I had to go, had to go get an x-ray. It's on there's a hairline fracture, soft tissue damage. And then I think you were there for whenever I got my bunion. Oh, yeah. When my leg like bent backwards underneath me, it was a, and like a, you know, kind of similar to other injury, it could have been just a regular, your leg gets folded, but I was wearing cleats that were a little bit too small, a little bit too narrow. So because of that, it almost bent my foot. And yeah, it absolutely changed the way that my foot feels in cold weather. It changes the way that no, it was on offense. Yeah, it was just a regular, yeah, it's a regular play, tried to stop, cut back. But yeah, flag football's definitely dangerous. I think volleyball is safer in a sense that, yeah, I mean, you got to cut, you got to make a lot of moves. So don't get me wrong, you can get into playing volleyball too, knock on glass. I have not had anything like that. Although I did have to switch shoes because the first pair of shoes that I was wearing, whenever we started playing volleyball, I did almost give my other foot a bunion. Yeah. And I was like, oh, man, you can feel it, you know, it was my shoes were too flimsy. It was pretty much like not wearing anything. And I was bending, jumping. So yeah, I never had to deal with that. I had to get some, some better shoes. My poor daughter already is dealing with it. She's only 10 years old, man. Yeah, it's like, it's not because of the shoes, like I've made sure. And once it started, you know, we definitely have made sure that her fucking shoes were the right size, especially with wise. Yep. It's just this girl's foot grows at an unbelievable rate every week. It's just, they're my shooter tied again. I think my foot is too big for my shoe again. So what the fuck we got to new ones last week, dude, these cleats are expensive. So her foot's growing a little bit. Every every week, it's just like this motherfucker grows. Well, welcome to the football function podcast. As always, I am one of the hosts of this show, Michael Ritter. You can find me on X at Michael five Ritter on Instagram and Michael Ritter five. And formerly, I was going to ask the host of the SmackDown review, we'll get into that here in just a second. Aren't you the host of? Well, we'll get into it right now. Joining me on this episode, my humble co-hosting in the game, the young terence minifil. Yes, sir. I am here. Thank you guys for coming in. Yeah, let's go and get into it. Right. Yeah, let's rip it off. Yeah, I am no longer the host of the SmackDown review. It was my own choice. It was a little bit of ending on my own terms. A lot of things kind of went into it. Yeah. Number one, just time scheduling. It was an opportunity, a great opportunity that I love doing for the past four years. It's without a doubt the reason why this show exists because it allowed me to get the experience, the reps, the knowledge, a lot of things, you know, came into it. That, you know, I'm extremely thankful for listeners. Yeah, maybe you are hearing this right now and you came from. Yeah, there's a lot of people that came from the WWE podcast funnel. So extremely thankful. But yeah, I just kind of, I realize that, hey, I'm no longer able to do this at the level that I once did it. So I want to allow somebody else to maybe fulfill their ambitions, give them a chance to, you know, check something off their bucket list, do something that they've really wanted to do for a long time. You know, it was an extremely great and advantageous opportunity for me that I took advantage of, obviously, and I just hope that somebody else can do the same thing and have they found your success? Yes, they did. It's a female named Amanda. I believe she's from the UK. Our buddy Grim Reaper was going to do it, right? That's what it has. You know, yeah, we were talking about it. That was kind of the plan. But obviously, and I may have jumped a gun there, it is Matt's show. For sure. For sure. And he kind of said, you know, I mean, we'll keep the candidates, we'll keep a list of the candidates, but he wanted to take more of a wide look at the, you know, the range of people that were interested in doing it. Right, so it's, yeah, it's his, no doubt. Yeah, I kind of realized that and I was like, I have, it makes sense. But Grim Reaper still going to be over here at the function, no doubt, he has well as myself. This absolutely helps the function, if anything, you know, it's been pretty doom and gloom for the WWE podcast side of things. But whenever you look on the other side of that coin, and you look at the football function and now obviously two scoops of hoops, I think that it's going to allow me to finally dive fully into these projects and give them, you know, my undivided attention. Yeah, fully imagine yourself in all this. Yeah, without a doubt. And I think that it's going to make this show better, ultimately. And I think that, you know, the WWE podcast isn't going anywhere. That's going to be something that continues to thrive with or without me. And I'm still going to be a listener over there. But I kind of just wanted to let our listeners know over here that whenever you no longer hear me mention the SmackDown review in our open going to have to change up the into yeah, whenever you whenever you finally kind of catch on that that's no longer a thing. I just wanted to kind of provide some context as to why. But I mean, this isn't a two scoops of hoops episode, we don't have to get into it like that. But hey, it's the first time we've gotten a chance to talk to Boston Celtics won their 18th championship. Man, it's good sitting right up above us a flag of you'll look at charm himself. Business is finished talking about the unfinished business that we had after the 2022 season. It was well documented. We were going after this trophy. We ended up getting it. You know, people can say what they want. I feel like we will elaborate more on a two scoops of hoops episode. Right. But motherfucker, as for now, I just wanted to kind of, you know, I just realized, give a shout out. What's up? Oh, you 50 pushups. Hey, I just remember we don't have to get in for right now. You know, you got some offing today. Yeah, I imagine. We paid up over time too. Oh, for sure. Maybe make it a good I was nervous you were going to make me do it all in one time. Maybe make it make it like a 10 pushup type of thing. I like the way you fucking do it. Per episode. That's what I'm talking about. Drag it out five weeks. Hey, I'm with since the Mavericks wanted to drag it out five games. Yeah. All right. Okay. Okay. Okay. But anyways, are you excited for this episode? Dude, I am so excited, a little exhausted from what you said a little bit earlier. I did go on a golfing trip today. Shout out to our boy Caleb and Ashton and his lovely girlfriend for having us. I was going and say it, man, we talked about it a little off air. I am fully addicted to golf now. I've I've invested quite a bit of time now. I think I'm going to go forward and you know, pursue a golf. I'm a golfer. I've entered my old man air and you know, it starts right here at golf. And I hope you guys join me one day. Mike, I feel like you'd be a great golfer though. I got for Caleb. He's just too much of a badass softball player, slash baseball player. And it killed him out on a course. I feel like any is a lefty too. So I can't ever show anything for a lefty. I don't know how to teach a lefty anything because it's all backwards. You guys are weird. My daughter is a lefty. So I can say that anyways, it would be nice to see somebody struggle like I struggled and teach them a little bit. But you know, normal. So that's why I feel like you'd be an excellent golfer. Because you're athletic, you know, you know, the game and you've been out there a couple times. So you know, somebody that you know, could hang a little bit would probably be awesome because Ashton is a fucking phenomenal golfer. He could hit it once if he connects it, dude, it's going, it's going far and pretty nice every time. So I can't really I can't really hang. But you know, you, I feel like you'd be a great golfer. See golf is a very, I'm sore as fuck now, dude. It's a very nuanced sport. You know, you definitely have to, I guess know the fundamentals to actually thrive. Yeah, most definitely did. I was watching so many videos and then the golf range was my best friend. I love just sitting out there and golf, or sitting out there hitting in the balls at the range, dude. It's so relaxing. And like for Kayla, who already has a swing that's engraved into his muscle memory. It's gonna be tough for him to just switch it up and, you know, start hitting golf balls. But yeah, the course you're talking about going to yeah, bar three, par three, whatever the holidays over there. I went there with someone once. It was just this random person. I forgot like exactly how we even met this guy, but he was like, he was golfing by itself, kind of doing the course. We were there about a group of like four or five of us. Right. And he just decided to hop in. And he had some vitamins with him on the golf course. Obviously. Yeah. So he wanted to come, you know, obviously out of backpacks. He might have just hop in with you guys and I cool, you know, whatever. Well, this dude, I'm not gonna lie, was not worth it. Like he was the most annoying person to golf with. That's the thing is, yeah, if you're not an experienced golfer, yeah, you want to, you want to get tips, you want to get pointers here or there, and you want to be able to get better throughout the, you know, the day, but this was someone that literally every swing was trying to coach you up and it's like, okay, yes, I am trying to get better at the same time. I'm not trying this. I'm not out here trying to get a golf course, not, you know, no pun intended. Okay, I'm not trying to, you know, get a lesson 101 on how to hit a golf ball. Yeah, eventually I'm gonna have to learn, but that now is not the time. But one vivid memory I have is, you know, obviously, it was a windy day. So it was tough to, you know, sometimes, you know, I'm sure, you know, a lot of people that smoke cigars, cigarettes, all kinds of things that require a lighter, even, you know, cooking out on a barbecue grill, whenever it's really windy, you need to block something to, you know, to cover the flame wide to, you know, go inside my shirt and try to like something. And I accidentally burnt a good chunk of my mustache off. And that's one memory I have from classic from that day of golfing outside of that annoying day that would not leave us alone. I won't be talking in your back swinging shit. And we definitely have evolved from those errors. But yeah, you know what I mean, golf golf is amazing, dude. It was so fun, especially the people who you're surrounded with golfing, like today Caleb, even though he wasn't making connexion or, you know, maybe not having the funnest of times out there, you know, actually playing golf, just having him around was, you know, worth it. It was just such a fun time, just his presence and his, his high motor, just positive attitude about everything was just probably good for my golf game, but even better for my morale and just being out there, just soaking up the sun and just being outdoors and just the positive eyes or everywhere. So big shout outs to those guys and gals. It was, it was amazing that I'm ready to go. Like I said, I've already booked the team time for tomorrow, you know, saying like I'm already hooked and I'm ready. All right. Well, I'm also ready to dive into this episode, continuing our team of destiny series. Let's go. We're moving on to Super Bowl 26. All right now, which, you know, it's a pretty juicy game whenever you talk about like, I feel sorry for Redskins fans or I'm sorry, Washington commanders fans that back then that didn't get a chance to witness this season, the 1991 season for the Washington Redskins, because there was a lot of good things, a lot of things to be proud of, including an absolutely dominating playoff run. Let's go. Which it's no secret. That's been one thing that's eluded that franchise for the better part of two decades now is winning in the post season, making a deep run. So we're going to go back in time. If we can, if CM will allow us to, you know, take the tarp off of his car off of the daytime machine, or if that's on the dust it off a little bit. I'm sure there's some cobwebs. I'm sure it'll start. Yeah, first try. I mean, see him taking care of his vehicle. I'm sure the oil change is nice. For sure. It's nice and registered. It doesn't have an expired tag or anything like that. Maybe at a month, maybe. Who knows? Who knows? You know, there's a chance. It's not football season. So seeing maybe putting off his registry and getting that bad boy right there legal. Yeah, you know, he's kind of just going through the off season coasting a little bit and he'll go, go visit the, um, the inspector whenever the time comes. Yeah, fuck it. Who cares? But for now, we're going to go ahead and borrow that bad boy. We're going to hop in and we're going to go back to 1991 to talk about Super Bowl 26, which was an American football game between the NFC champion Washington Redskins and the AFC champion Buffalo Bills to decide the NFL champion for the 1991 season. The Redskins defeated the Bills by a score of 37 to 24, becoming the fourth team after the Pittsburgh Steelers, the now Las Vegas Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers to win three Super Bowls. The Bills became the third team after the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl eight and Super Bowl nine and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 21 and 22 to lose back to back Super Bowls. The game was played on January 26th, 1992 at the Huber H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The first time the city played host to a Super Bowl. Let's see here. We will go ahead and get into some of the explanations as to where these teams came from. Both teams finished the regular season with the best record in their respective conference. The Redskins posted a 14 and 2 regular season record and led the league during this regular season with 485 points. Washington head coach Joe Gibbs entered the game seeking his third Super Bowl victory with the team but with his third starting quarterback Mark Ripian. The Bills finished the regular season with a 13 and 3 record in advance to their second consecutive Super Bowl largely through the play of quarterback Jim Kelly and their K-gun no-huddle offense. I'm sure you remember that from our previous team of Destiny episode. However, their defense ranked second to last in the league and totally yards allowed. So it's kind of suspect. Kind of reminds me of the 2016 Falcons who made it to the Super Bowl despite their defense being very vulnerable. Super Bowl 26 was dominated by Washington. Early in the second quarter, the Redskins jumped out to a 17-0 lead from which the Bills could not recover. Washington also sat Kelly four times and intercepted him four times. Ripian who completed 18 of 33 passes for 292 yards, two touchdowns and an interception was named Super Bowl MVP. Let's see here. I'm going to scroll down a little bit, skip some of this nonsense. We'll talk about the Washington Redskins, the eventual winner. Washington entered the Super Bowl leading the league during the regular season and scoring with 485 points while allowing the second fewest points with only 224. The team was led by Mark Ripian, head coach Joe Gibbs, third different starting quarterback. Ripian led the NFC during the regular season and passing yards, passing touchdowns, and with 249 out of 421 completions and only 11 interceptions, he earned the second highest passer rating in the league with a 97.9 QBR. That's still a lot. I mean, even in our era right now, that'd be, you know, very acceptable. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ripian had several great targets to whom he could throw. Wide receiver Gary Clark was the main deep threat on the team, catching 70 passes for 1,000 at 340 yards and 10 touchdowns. On the other side of the field, wide receiver Art Monk playing in his 12th NFL season was just as reliable, catching 71 balls for 1,049 yards and eight touchdowns. Monk 71 receptions in 1991 gave him a career total of 801, just 18 behind the all-time record held by Steve Largent. Wide receiver Ricky Sanders was also a big element in the passing game, catching 45 balls for 580 yards and five touchdowns. The Redskins primary weapon in the backfield was running back Ernest Biner, who ranked fifth in the NFL with 1,048 yards, while also catching 34 balls for 308 yards and scoring five touchdowns. Rookie running back Ricky Irvin's was also a major asset to the rushing attack. 445 rushing attempts for 680 yards for an average of 4.7 yards per carry, while also catching the ball 16 times for 181 yards. And then whenever Washington was near the goal line, they usually relied on fullback Gerald Riggs, who rushed for 248 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. The Redskins offensive line, known as the Hogs, was led by Pro Bowl tackle Jim Laki or Laki. I'm not really sure exactly how to pronounce that. I'm going to go with Laki. Yeah, I think you're on the line. And guard Mark Schlerith, along with four-time Pro Bowl guards, veterans, or Russ Grimm and Joe Jacoby. The Hogs allowed the fewest sacks in the league with just nine, 10 sacks less than the team that allowed the second fewest. Even Washington Special Team Unit was a big threat. Running back Brian Mitchell led the NFL in punt return yards and put return touchdowns with a 13.3 yards per return average, while also gaining 583 yards returning kickoffs. And their kicker, he made the Pro Bowl leading the league in field goals and extra points. Washington's defense, which ranked third in the NFL in fewer yards allowed, was led by all Pro defensive back Dale Green, who was one of the fastest players in the NFL, and Pro Bowl linebacker Wilbur Marshall. Green and Marshall recorded five interceptions each, and Marshall recorded 75 return yards in the touchdown, while also compiling 5.5 sacks and forcing four fumbles. Safety Brad Edwards was also a big factor in the secondary, recording four interceptions. Up front, their line was anchored by defensive in Charles Mann, who recorded 11 of Washington's 50 sacks and recovered a fumble. Defensive end Fred Stokes also made a big impact with six and a half sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception. The Redskins stormed to a league best 14 and two regular season record. After crushing the Detroit Lions 45 to 0 on opening day, they recorded 11 straight wins before suffering their first loss to the Dallas Cowboys, 24 to 21. Their only other defeat was a meaningless loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the final game of the regular season, in which they rested most of their starters because they already punched the number one seed. So let's talk about it here. They lose by three points to the Cowboys 12 weeks into the season. First loss, and then their other loss because they rested all their starters. I don't think people talk enough about how close this team was to running the table. Yeah, definitely didn't unless we go back and study this type of stuff. This isn't talked about in the mainstream. This is one of the teams that could be talked about going undefeated. If it wasn't for wrestling their starters and all their best players, most likely at the very last of the game. And then a three point field goal probably went to the last second anyways. So I don't know, man, this team should have been talked about a lot more. It can get lonely climbing Mount McKinley, so to entertain myself, I go to Chumbah Casino.com. Let's go over to the other side of this matchup. The Buffalo Bills. The Bills know a huddle K-gun offense once again dominated the league by gaining an NFL best 6,525 yards and scoring 458 points, second to only their opponent, the Washington Redskins. The leader of the offense, quarterback Jim Kelly and running back Thurman Thomas, both had the best seasons of their careers. Kelly completed 64.1% of his passes for 3,844 yards in a league leading 33 touchdowns with only 17 interceptions. I don't know if I could say only in this day and age, even back then, 17 seems like a lot. The 33 touchdowns, 17 picks, 3,800 yards gave him a 97.6 passer rating. Thomas Rush for 1,400 yards, caught 62 balls for 620 yards, and scored 12 touchdowns to earn him both the NFL offense a player of the year award and the NFL MVP. With 2,067 yards from scrimmage, Thomas led the league in that category for the 3rd consecutive season. Just like Washington, Buffalo had more than one threat in their backfield. Running back Kenneth Davis emerged as a big threat rushing for 620 yards, catching 20 passes for 118 yards, and scoring 5 touchdowns. The Bills also had several major weapons in their passing game. Wide receiver Andrei Reed led the team with 81 catches for 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns, and also rushed the ball for 12 times for 136 yards. On the other side of the field, veteran wide receiver James Lofton recorded 57 catches for 1,072 yards and 8 touchdowns to earn his 8th Pro Bowl appearance and finished the year. Just 55 yards short of the all-time receiving yard a record held by Steve Largent. Obviously Jerry Rice would go on to crush that record, but at the time here in 1991 when Jerry Rice was still playing, James Lofton was right there. He was only 55 yards short of breaking the all-time receiving yard a record at the time. And Pro Bowl tied in. Keith McKeller was also a big contributor with 44 catches, 434 yards. Wide receiver Don Beebe had 32 catches, 414 yards and 6 touchdowns. Once again, the Bills offensive line was led by Sinner Kent Hull along with left tackle Will Wolford and Pro Bowl left guard Jim Richard. But the Bills had big problems on their defense ranked 27th out of 28. Obviously, there was 28 NFL teams back then that was before the four expansion teams came into the equation or yeah, four expansion teams came into the equation. But yeah, they were 19th and points allowed and they only got 31 sacks and as a Falcons fan, that sounds very familiar. But a big reason for this was that defensive lineman Bruce Smith and Jeff Wright, two of their best players, missed most of the season with injuries. One of the few bright spots on the Bills defense was Pro Bowl linebacker Cornelius Bennett, who recorded 78 tackles, nine sacks and two fumble coverings. Another Pro Bowl linebacker, Darryl Talley led the team with 90 tackles, five picks while also recovering two fumbles and forcing four. Cornerback Nate Odom was the leader of the secondary with 500 receptions, which he returned 120 yards and the touchdown. And he had 66 tackles and a fumble recovery on the year. So for a corner bag, it seems like he was definitely just a big time playmaker in all aspects. And despite their defensive problems, the Bills finished the season with an AFC best 13 and three regular season record. Just couldn't hold it off, huh? Just couldn't pull it off. But taking it to the postseason, the Redskins defeated the Atlanta Falcons 24-7 in a rain-soaked playoff game that was closer than their 56-17 regular season went over Atlanta. Ripian had 442 passing yards and six touchdowns in the earlier game, but could only compete 14 of 28 passes for 170 yards and no touchdowns in their rematch. See, we tightened up a little bit after getting the absolute kiss. You learned. You learned. That's what the game is about. But still, Washington dominated the Falcons again by forcing six turnovers and rushing for 162 yards. The Redskins held the ball for over 36 minutes while running back. A Ricky Irvin's recorded 104 rushing yards and a touchdown. Then Washington crushed the Detroit Lions 41-10 in the NFC championship game. The Lions posted a 12-4 record and, you know, we're coming off of a 38-6 blowout win over the Cowboys the week before. So let's not act like this is our modern-day Detroit Lions. This was a 12-4 team. They dismantled a team that beat those Redskins, gave them their first loss of the season. So clearly, the Redskins went into the Tennessee championship game thinking, "Man, we got our work cut out for us." They beat them 41-10. Absolutely mopped the floor with them. Many sports riders predicted that the NFC championship game would be the much closer game than the Redskins win over the Lions in the season, mainly because Barry Sanders didn't play. That was the only game that Barry Sanders didn't play. Because remember, they beat the shit out of the Lions in the, you know, the season opener or whatever it was. Barry Sanders didn't play during an injury. But after that, he played in 15 games. It was a 16-game season. And he got 1500, 1,548 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. 99 combined rushing and receiving yards against Dallas in the playoffs. So, I mean, you know, he even had a decent game against then, almost getting 100 yards. However, the Redskins crushed Detroit in this game as well, quickly forcing two Lions turnovers and building up a 10-0 lead before the game had five minutes off the board. The Redskins scored 41 points off of two touchdown runs by Gerald Riggs, two field goals from their kicker Chip Lomiller, a pair of touchdown passes from Ripian to Monk and Clark in Green's 32-yard fourth quarter interception return for a touchdown. Sanders was held to just 49 yards or 59 yards, I apologize. And linebacker Wilbur Marshall sacked Lions quarterback Eric Kramer three times. Around the other side, over in the AFC side of things, the Buffalo Bills defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 37-14, avenging a 33-6 Monday night loss during the regular season, in which the Chiefs recorded six sacks, recovered five fumbles and gained 239 rushing yards with running backs, Harvey Williams and Christian Aquier recording over 100 yards each. During this playoff game, the Bills jumped to a 24-0 lead in the third quarter with Kelly throwing three touchdown passes. The first two to Andre Reed and the third to James Lofton. The Bills also got a big performance out of Thomas who rushed for over 100 yards, kicker Scott Norwood who made three field goals. Meanwhile, unconcerned with the Kansas City's weak passing game, Buffalo played Bennett and Talley close to the line of scrimmage on nearly every play to stuff to run. Both players combined for 13 tackles while the Bills defense held Kansas City to 77 yards on the ground. Chiefs running back Barry Ward who became the primary rusher since the Monday night game and rushed for over 100 yards in each of Kansas City's previous three games, he was limited to just 50 yards. In addition, Buffalo's defense knocked Chiefs quarterback Steve DeBerg out of the game and intercepted backup quarterback Mark Vlasik four times. In the next round, Buffalo played the Denver Broncos who were coming off of the 26-24 win over the Houston Oilers in which John Elway led them on an 87-yard drive to set up kicker Dave Treadwell for a game-winning field goal with only 16 seconds left. It was predicted that this AFC Championship game would be a shootout between the Bills' powerful offense and the superb postseason play of John Elway. But neither Elway nor the Bills offense had much success in the 10-7 Bills victory in a game totally dominated by defense. Bennett who spent almost as much time in Denver's back filled as Elway had another great game constantly pressuring Elway, sharing one sack and tackling Denver just pretty much behind the line of scrimmage three times. Bills linebacker Carlton Bailey also had a big impact late in the third quarter, intercepting a screen pass from John Elway and returning at 11 yards for Buffalo's only touchdown of the game. After backup quarterback Gary Kubiak sound familiar scored Denver's only touchdown with less than two minutes to go. The Bills then clinched a victory when defensive back Kirby Johnson forced and recovered a fumble from running back Steve Sewell on Denver's final drive of the game. Treadwell's three missed field goals were a large factor in the outcome of the defensive struggle. So we'll get a little bit of pre-game news here. During the week leading up to Super Bowl 26 it seemed most of the pressure were going to be on the Buffalo Bills. Obviously they just lost the Super Bowl the year before. The AFC Championship game appeared to be the best defensive effort by Buffalo all season as they held the Broncos to only a touchdown while also limiting John Elway to just 11 completions for 121 yards and no touchdowns with one interception. But the Bills high powered offense was completely shut down limited to just a single field goal for the entire game. In addition the Bills could have easily been eliminated by the Broncos had Treadwell not missed three field goal attempts two of which hit the uprights. The performance also gave an opportunity for Gibbs and the Redskins coaches to devise a strong game plan to exploit the Super Bowl opponent and all of their weaknesses. Denver was successful being aggressive that may have aided us a little bit in our thinking said Redskins defensive coordinator Richie Petitabon I believe Pettitabon I don't really know how to pronounce that. I think the first one is right. It's not going to be mentioned again in this entire week so I think you do good. Looking at them before they had played Denver we kind of thought you had to put pressure on this guy referring to Jim Kelly. We attacked the line of scrimmage more than usual we wanted to blitz to stop the run early in the game as sometimes it's tough to pick up blitzes against the running game. Redskins linebacker Matt Millen was bidding to become the first player to play in a Super Bowl victory that is not just playing a Super Bowl but win a Super Bowl for three different franchises. He played in Super Bowl 25 28 and 24 obviously 25 and 28 or I apologize 15 and 18 the Roman numerals got me 15 and 18 with the Raiders and then Super Bowl 24 with the San Francisco 49ers. However, Millen was deactivated for the game and watched from the Redskins sideline. He retired from the NFL shortly after this game to pursue a career in broadcasting and later a team executive. During the CBS telecast it was mentioned that Leonard Smith the Bills regular starting strong safety couldn't play as a result of an infection in his knee. Bills defensive line coach Chuck Dickerson mocked the Washington Redskins famous offensive line the Hogs in a television interview. Dickerson said Redskins tackle Joe Jacoby was a quote unquote Neanderthal. He slobbers a lot and probably kicks dogs in his neighborhood. Oh shit. He also said tackle John or Jim Locky oh jeez. Quote unquote has bad breath players will fall down without him even touching them. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs got his hands on some tapes of Dickerson and played them at a team meeting on the night right before the Super Bowl and head coach Steve Levy I believe is the name of their coach. I need to get that right before I see he's a great coach. I don't want to be a complete jag-off. Marv Levy so I knew I had to go back and correct that a little bit but nonetheless he actually fired this head coach. I think three days after this game. Yeah he was not happy with the remarks in the comments in the bulletin board material. Yeah that is defense. That was good. The other team would find my Casa as the designated home team in the annual rotation between the AFC and NFC teams the Bills elected to wear their home blue uniforms with white pants the Redskins therefore wore their white uniforms with burgundy pants which that was their own home preference at the time so that kind of worked out for them. Yeah they didn't give shit. Um let's see here off the field Super Bowl 26 was also the site of a protest led by the American Indian movement. Attended by about 2000 protesters the demonstration was intended to pressure Redskins management into changing the team's name which some found offensive yeah the team would in fact remove the name Redskins in the 2020 season thus making Super Bowl 26 the last Super Bowl appearance for Washington under the franchise's old nickname. It only took him 19 years. Should Washington advance to any future Super Bowls it will be as the Washington commanders so really quickly moment of silence for the Washington Redskins obviously um it's bitter and very sensitive subject. Very very our Washington fans out there and we appreciate you guys. I feel like I'm right there with you like I understand it's probably gonna ruffle some feathers no pun intended it's probably gonna make some people not necessarily feel too hot yeah about our opinions but hey you know there's context to everything and I'm not saying like Native American people shouldn't feel a certain way. I'm not saying that they shouldn't feel a way about that that word that's not at all what I'm trying to say. I'm simply saying that clearly like the um the theme you know the Native American theme that Washington was using wasn't done in a derogatory way as a way to be little Native Americans or anything like that if anything they literally embraced their lifestyle and tried to put it at the forefront and you know I mean in their fight song braves of the war path you know like they legitimately were trying to represent them in a good way. Yeah how often do you ever do you ever see somebody disrespect somebody by making their whole organization that name like you want your name to represent something good and something that embodies your culture and further record before anybody comes at us and says hey you don't get to say what Native Americans find offensive and I totally I had kind of preference like preface that before but not only that there is a massive representation of Native American people who by the way say what the give us our name back yeah we loved being represented because the logo and the logo itself is based off of a real Native American you know so I don't know I didn't expect us to get into this in this episode but I didn't kind of breaking you know bringing it up I had to kind of get my thoughts off on it like right I feel for a man like if I think it's a dope ass name I love her if Peter got involved and somehow got the NFL to get rid of all got rid of all animal names in the NFL right or just all sports you know there's groups out there that are trying yeah like if there were somehow the Falcons had to become the Atlanta migrants or the yeah because you know obviously the Atlanta migration city I don't want to know I don't want anybody to come at me for that either or the Atlanta anything you know like I'm gonna be honest I mean I love that Atlanta as a city but it would sometimes I mean I don't know I don't know if I could support the the new team you know it would be weird at the end of the day I do understand the Falcons rebranded everything I do understand the choice that you know the Redskins the Washington fans that they made that to stick with the commanders you know I mean hey this is our team it's the same colors we watch these players get drafted now if it was like an expansion type of thing and they just completely had a new roster yeah you're probably gonna say I'm jumping off with this bad boy that's easily good I do respect them for um for sticking it out with their team man so a lot goes into that and a lot can be said about them you know respects kind of holding it off but hey let's go ahead yeah let's go ahead and get into this actual game let's talk about Washington's last Super Bowl their most recent Super Bowl victory here let's get into the first quarter both teams entered the game as the two highest scoring teams in the entire NFL but after the end of the first quarter both of them would be scoreless the game started with the parade of misuse by both teams first the opening kickoff had to be redone because Bill's kicker Brad DeLuca I will say there's a lot of yeah yeah that the names yeah these games these names they are not making it easy for the boys here but they're kicker Brad D he kicked the ball before the referee Jerry Markbright yeah signaled to begin play so oh man can you imagine that the Super Bowl that was a referee kind of saying hey this is my moment yeah it's exactly what that scream before I tell you to power my Super Bowl power hungry motherfucker yeah it's easy you could just easy let that especially the Super Bowl bro you've got to just let that go but the Redskins got the ball first and after they were forced forced to put on their opening possessions or possession of the game I apologize Bill's running back Thurmond Thomas missed the first two plays of Buffalo's first drive because he couldn't find his helmet this is booby miles straight up booby miles not booby booby didn't lose his helmet booby oh yeah and you know booby is the one that's actually that's from that whole situation but after an exchange of punts to start the game Washington drove 87 yards the majority of which came from quarterback Mark Ripian's four passes to wide receiver Art Monk for a total gain of 79 yards Monk's fourth perception was for a 31 yard gain in which he caught the ball at the Buffalo 27 yard line and subsequently broke attack by cornerback Kirby Jackson but was forced out of bounds at the two yard line by safety Mark Kelso the Bill's defense then stiffened to keep the Redskins out of the end zone after running back Joel Riggs was stopped for no gain on two rushing attempts Ripian appeared to complete a two-yard touchdown pass to Monk however instant replay determined that after Monk caught the ball his right foot stepped out of bounds deeming the pass incomplete and bringing up fourth down this was the first time in Super Bowl history that an instant replay was used to overturn a touchdown Washington then tried to salvage the drive with a 90 or a 19 yard field goal attempt by kicker Chip Lomiller Lomiller see those names keep coming Lomiller but holder slash backup quarterback Jeff Rutledge fumbled to snap turning the ball over on downs and keeping the game scoreless sloppy hump Buffalo's first play after the boss field goal attempt quarterback Jim Kelly threw a pass intended for wide receiver Andre Reed that was tipped by Redskins quarterback Gerald Green and intercepted by safety Brad Edwards who returned at 21 yards to the Buffalo 12-yard line but three plays after the turnover the Bills got the ball right back when Ripian threw a pass that was deflected by nose tackle Jeff Wright and intercepted by Jackson Buffalo just couldn't capitalize on the turnover and they were forced to punt to end the quarter so to start the second quarter the Redskins began to take over the game on their very next possession a 19 yard run by running back Ernest Biner and a 41 yard completion from Ripian to wide receiver Ricky Sanders set up Lomiller's 34 yard field goal to give Washington a 3-0 lead the Redskins defense then forced the Bills to a 3-0 and out on their ensuing possession and Chris Mose Moore's more Chris Moore's M-O-H-R Chris Moore that's what I would call it he has a 23 yard plant sale out of bounds at the Washington 49 yard line the Redskins then drove 51 yards in five plays which included a 16 yard reception by wide receiver Gary Clark and roughing the passer penalty on Buffalo linebacker Cornelius Bennett the drive ended with Ripian 10 yard touchdown pass to Biner increasing the Washington lead to 10 to 0 on the Bills next drive Green intercepted another pass from Kelly at the Washington 45 yard line three plays later Ripian completed a 34 yard pass to Clark to reach Buffalo's 15 yard line a 15 yard run by Ricky Ervin's and set up Gerald Riggs one yard touchdown to extend the Redskins lead to a quick 17 to 0 to that end scoreless first quarter this is my words by the way scoreless first quarter and the Bills kind of immediately come out or I'm sorry the Redskins come out quick strike 17 quick points and they kind of put the Bills away in the second quarter after the next three possessions ended in punts Buffalo had a chance to score with 146 left in the half Bills wide receiver Steve Tasker down to Moore's 48 yard plant at the Redskins one yard line Washington did not gain any net yards during the possession but narrowly avoided the safety on second down when Wright appeared to tackle Biner in the end zone however Biner managed to stretch the ball out of the end zone before his knee hit the ground ensuring that the Bills would be kept off the board after Ripian threw an incomplete pass on third down Buffalo got the ball back after cornerback Cliff Hicks returned Kelly Goodburn's 42 yard point two yards to the Washington 41 yard line from there Kelly completed a 21 yard pass the tight end Keith McKellar to reach the 20 but after an incomplete pass and an eight yard sack on Kelly by linebacker Wilbur Marshall Edwards broke up a third down pass intended for Reed in which Edwards hit Reed before the ball got him however no flag for passing interference was thrown in disgust Reed threw his helmet to the ground drawing a mandatory 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct cuts out that took the Bills out of Phil Goal range and forced them to punt as the teams ran off the field at halftime Bills head coach Mark Levy confronted Phil Judge Eric Marifild whom Levy thought missed the pass interference call and then through the unsportsmanlike conduct flag against Reed you know pretty much saying you guys are trying to screw us here the Bills became the ninth team in NFL history in Super Bowl history to go scoreless in the first half of the Super Bowl the Baltimore Colts I apologize in Super Bowl 3 the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowls 4 8 and 9 and 11 all four Super Bowls that the Minnesota Vikings lost they were scoreless in the first half it sucks the Redskins were also scoreless in the first half of Super Bowl 7 the Denver Broncos in the first half of Super Bowl 12 and the Cincinnati Bengals in the first half of Super Bowl 16 like I said the Bills were the ninth team to do this all eight teams before went on to lose the game I will say though this is fucking bullshit that's my first F bomb because the Falcons were up 20 to 0 against the Patriots in the Super Bowl first half that was the halftime score 20 to 0 and yeah so I don't know when we're going to get to that point in our breakdown here the team of destiny but I could already tell you there's a good chance I'm gonna be sick that day I would be too Ryan Seacrest here when you have a busy schedule it's important to maximize your downtime one of the best ways to do that is by going to half shall we Washington increased their lead to 24 to 0 just 16 seconds into the second half after linebacker Kurt govia intercepted kelly's pass govia I believe that's how you say it's good he intercepted Jim kelly's pass on the first play of the third quarter returned at 23 yards to the pills two yard line they go the blitz that forced kelly's rush throw and led to turnovers or led to the turnover had been drawn up by the Redskins defensive coaches on the pregame bus ride to the metro dome they came up with an idea to use their superior speed rushes against the powerful but not that mobile interior bills offensive line on the next play rigs rush two yards for a second touchdown of the game the Redskins 24 to 0 lead midway through the third quarter tied to Miami dolphins in Super Bowl eight for the largest shutout lead in Super Bowl history it was eventually broken by the Seattle Seahawks 36 to 0 lead in Super Bowl 48. The bills finally got some momentum going with their next two drives first they drove 77 yards to the Redskins three yard line aided by kelly's two passes to go running back Thurmond Thomas for 16 yards a 14 yard reception by wider receiver James Lofton on third and 10 and then a 43 yard reception by wider receiver Don BB Washington kept Buffalo out of the end zone but kicker Scott Norwood's 20 Scott Norwood's 21 yard fill goal cut the deficit from 24 to 0 so 24 to 3. After forcing Washington to put on their next possession the bills drove 56 yards and six plays aided by a 29 yard pass interference penalty on Redskins cornerback Martin Mayhew in the end zone the bills kept um or the Redskins kept the bills out of the end zone on the first two plays but Thomas scored the first Buffalo touchdown of the game with a one yard run to cut Washington's lead to 24 to 10 so you're thinking here okay this is a no-huddle offense this is the K-gun offense we've heard about it for two seasons now they can score quick yeah I know that Redskins fans are probably feeling like the Falcons fans were feeling on that god awful day of 2017 back in 1992 whenever this you know this game happened in the beautiful January of 1992 I'm sure they were probably shitting their pants as well however the bills hopes of a comeback were dashed when the Redskins advanced 79 yards in 11 plays on their ensuing drive which included three runs by Ervin for 15 yards as well as four passes from Rippy and the Clark for a total gain of 60 yards the last of which was a 30 yard touchdown given the Redskins a 31 to 10 lead with 124 left in the third quarter and essentially sealing their third Super Bowl title three plays after receiving the ensuing kickoff cornerback Al void Mayhew stripped the ball from Jim Kelly and it was recovered by defensive infrared stokes on the Buffalo 14 yard line Christ sakes Jim hold on to the ball and talk about turnover central man no wonder they lost this game and they said but after the turnover the Redskins drove to the bill seven yard line on a 17 yard reception by Art Monk and increased their lead to 34 to 10 go on low millers 25 yard field goal in the second play of the fourth quarter 34 to 10 man Jesus on the bills ensuing drive Kelly was sacked for a nine yard loss by Stokes and threw an incomplete pass and then his fourth interception of the game another word who returned at 35 yards to the Buffalo 33 yard line 5 plays later low miller kicked his third field goal with 11 36 left in the game to increase the Redskins lead to 37 to 10 when is enough now comfortable with their lead the washing and defense began to take it easy take their foot off the gas if you will on this Buffalo's off or Buffalo Bills offense the bills managed to respond with a 15 play 79 yard drive which featured a 15 yard penalty on maze for delivering a late hit on Lofton in two receptions and a run by Thomas for 14 yards the 17 yard catch by Lofton 11 yard reception by wide receiver Al Edwards and two receptions by running back Kenneth Davis for 15 yards the drive ended with Kelly's two yard touchdown pass to tight end Pete M I'm gonna try to say that one to cut Buffalo's deficit to 37 to 17 after receiving an on or recovering an onside kick the bills drove 50 yards and aided by two runs and a reception by Davis for a total of 28 yards as well as an 18 yard passenger offense penalty by maze this dude was helping him out by freaking getting penalties left and right Kelly then threw a four yard touchdown pass to BB to make the score 37 to 24 but by then only three minutes and 55 seconds remained in the game Buffalo's second onside attempt wasn't as great did not go well wasn't successful in Washington reached the Buffalo 22 yard line to run the clock down to 25 seconds before turning the ball over on down from there the bills attempted one final pass before the game ended Jim Kelly completed 28 of a Super Bowl record 58 passing attempts for 275 yards and two touchdowns but was sacked four times intercepted four times and lost to fumble Thomas ran for only 13 yards on 10 carries that's why they lost and was limited to 27 yards on four receptions yikes James Lofton was the top receiver for the bills seven catches 92 yards but Reed was limited with just five catches for 31 yards locked up Clark had seven for 115 and a touchdown and our monk added seven for 113 Jesus Clark and Monk became the third pair of teammates to each have 100 yards in a Super Bowl they joined the Steelers John Starworth and Lynn Swan and Super Bowl eight and bangles Chris Collins worth then Ross in a Super Bowl 16 okay Irvin's was the top rusher of the game with 72 yards Biner recorded 49 rushing yards and three receptions for 24 yards and a touchdown on defense Edwards recorded four tackles broke up five passes and returned two interceptions for 56 yards should have been the Super Bowl MVP in my personal opinion for sure the Redskins amassed 417 yards on or of total offense while limited this explosive or explosive bills offense to just 283 with just 43 rushing yards the two teams combined for the most points in the third quarter ever in a Super Bowl 24 points 14 for Washington 10 for Buffalo and then the most combined points in the second half 44 total points 24 from Buffalo and then 20 for Washington with the win the Redskins became the first team and Joe Gibbs became the first coach to win a Super Bowl with three different starting quarterbacks but since then two other teams have since done this the New York Giants Phil Sims and Super Bowl 21 Jeff hostile and Super Bowl 25 the one we just did and then Eli Manning and Super Bowl 42 and 46 and then the Green Bay Packers obviously bar star the first two Super Bowls Brett Favre and Super Bowl 31 and then Aaron Rogers Super Bowl 45 this was the last major professional championship won by a DC based team until the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018 and this was also the last game for Washington guard Russ Grimm shout out to the Redskins and the Washington organization to win obviously um it was their last Super Bowl championship they are desperate to get back desperate to start winning in the postseason they're looking up looking like we said man a historic team a team that doesn't get the respect they deserve for nearly going perfect I mean yeah they they were 14 and 2 so you're looking well they lost two times we go look at those losses one of them they did not play their starters they clinched them yeah and it paid off for them they got the rest that they needed to dismantle any team in that violin Falcons on their way to a Super Bowl championship and you know the bills were no joke man that was a very elite offense they're a team that had just lost their first Super Bowl so you know that could have been their most hungry yeah to get the job done and you still stop them from doing that so you have to give a shout out to Washington for doing just that shout out to my cousin Thomas my real sure he was able to watch this game and watch this season because as I was studying up doing my research on this I was like man this was a great time to be a Redskins fan no doubt and it's what gives their organizations from glory to look back on those events on barry trophies yeah you can take the name away but you ain't taking away those trophies so yeah I think that you know better days are going to be ahead I truly believe that they just got their new franchise quarterback in jane Daniels they got a new head coach they had a bunch of cap space where we were to bring in a bunch of new players that fit their coaches identity so you could expect that the Redskins could be the earth hey it's all good expect that Washington could be back to winning ways sooner rather than later I'm surprised that it happened more often in the episode so kudos to you big dog hey man I said the R word quite a bit um I just should have prevented at the beginning the R word is going to be thrown around a lot yeah it's I'm going to put it in the title that's what I'm going to give the 1991 Washington Redskins their respect because that's what they were called and um you know once the last time we have to talk about it you know they don't make another Super Bowl season you can make an exception for one I mean yes we do achieve a death if I do an NFL Immortals episode featuring Sean Taylor you know then yeah we might talk about it we have to bring it back up or who knows maybe Albert Heensworth oh I'm just joking obviously um but yeah you got anything to say any shout outs anything before we give the give these mics arrest man we've been talking for a while here I don't think they want to rest they've been uh they've been neglected for a while but seeking of that if you're stuck around this long you and OG be named if there's any suggestions you know we don't want to name from the studio we don't want to just force the function dungeon on it because that was the garage and our other studio obviously
