El Chaparro And The Tuzantla Massacre (7/12/24)

El Chaparro, a leader within the Familia Michoacana cartel, played a significant role in a deadly confrontation in Tuzantla, Michoacán. The violence erupted on August 24, 2022, when hitmen from rival factions of the same cartel clashed in the town's main square, resulting in at least eight deaths, including minors. This confrontation was part of a larger internal conflict within the Familia Michoacana following the execution of another cartel leader, Medardo Hernández Vera, alias "Lalo Mantecas".

El Chaparro, who controls the Tuzantla and Tiquicheo areas, rebelled against the supreme leader of the Familia Michoacana, Johnny Hurtado Olascoaga, alias "El Pez." This rebellion led to a series of violent clashes, including the torching of a gas station in Tuzantla. Federal and state security forces responded, arresting several individuals and seizing vehicles, weapons, and drugs.

The conflict in Michoacán is part of a broader pattern of cartel-related violence that has plagued the region, contributing to high homicide rates and significant instability.

The cartel violence in Mexico certainly shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. In fact, it just seems like it's accelerating. We have another story today of a local cartel leader who killed eight people because, well, they made them look like a dumbass. And this is how violent things are down here. All it takes is one little bit of disrespect. Step on somebody's shoe, look at somebody incorrectly, look at somebody for too long. And before you know it, you might have a few saccarios showing up at your house with machine guns to teach you a lesson about respect. But when citizens start getting caught up in it, regular people who are just trying to live their lives, that's when it really becomes a problem, right? As far as I'm concerned, if these cartel members wanna kill each other, then hey, have at it. But when you're going after people who are just trying to live their lives, people who are getting caught up in the crossfire, normal folks, that's when there's a real issue. And unfortunately, when these cartels are conducting their business, it inevitably falls on the shoulders of the regular folks, the working class, the poor, the guy out there with the taco stand, just trying to make ends meet. And then in turn, what happens? Well, it makes everything more difficult even on the other side of the border. It increases migrants, right? People wanna leave these violent areas, these drug riddled areas. So they're looking for a better life. They come to America. And it's not just happening in Mexico, of course, South America, Central America. All of these migrants are being moved and they're moving A, because of poverty and B, because of the poverty is being caused, because of the war on drugs. So it's a vicious ass cycle and we can't address one part of it without addressing all of it, because it's just like putting your finger in a hole on a boat where there's 50 holes. Sure, you plug that one hole up, but what about the rest of them? And that's why I'm so adamant that fighting a war on drugs, the way we do, is not the proper way to go about it. And prohibition. Just end it. Cut these guys off of the legs right away, just like we did with the mafia. Do you really think that the mafia would have gained the power that they gained? If booze wasn't illegal back then, that's how they all got their power and they got all their money. Hell, that's how the Kennedy's gained the power as well. So we already have experience trying to use prohibition as a tool to stop an illicit drug, if you will, from being used by the populace. It didn't work then, it's not working now, and it won't work tomorrow. As long as we continue on the path we're on, we're going to hear more stories like this, and we're going to be talking about more stories like this. Today we have an article from The Daily Star. Headline, cartel leader massacre is eight people because rivals made them look like a dumbass. This article was authored by Ethan Blackshaw. The leader of a small Mexican cartel has said that the killing of at least eight people occurred as leaders of a rival gang made them look like a dumbass. On August 24, the major gunfight broke out between hitmen from rival cartel groups in Tucson in the Mexico state of Michoacan. So Michoacan is just riddled with warfare right now. You have so many different rival cartels battling it out and so many offshoots of different cartels that are popping up that it's hard to keep track of who the players are on the stage. Now of course, you have the major players, CJNGs and a lower cartel. These are the guys that are moving major, major weight, but there's all of these offshoots, these little cartels that are popping up and they want to be noticed. They want to be seen. And to do that, you have to be just as violent, if not more violent, than the next group. So you see how the cycle continues to perpetuate itself, right? According to Animal Politico, the armed confrontation occurred after hitmen arrived in the town in a convoy of vehicles hunting for their rivals. So these dudes, it's like, you know, if you say you were younger, going to the next town over to play a football game against, you know, insert town here. But instead of it being a football game, these dudes hop in their pickup trucks. They decide they're going to come over to the next district, the next municipality, and kill their rival drug dealer. Well that would all be all fine and well if it wasn't for all of the people in the middle of that. People have to go to work. People have to go to school. Kids are out playing. And these dudes, they don't give one single shit about any of that. Eight people were reportedly found dead at the scene, although Borderlands Beat reports that it is likely more hitmen were killed, whose bodies were removed from the scene before authorities arrived. A lot of times that'll happen too. Bodies will get moved. The cartel that comes out on the waiting side, they'll remove their dead, perhaps, so that it doesn't look like they had any killed. Remember, it's all about image as well. It's not just about what they're doing on the so-called battlefield here. It's about the image that they can project in the long term. So what they want to make sure of is that they have propaganda from all of these battles. Video, torture tapes, all of that stuff helped them recruit in the future. I know it sounds bizarre to us, but that's how it all works down here. Five people were taken into custody in relation to the incident, although it later emerged that the local municipal police only had 35 officers on staff at the time of the armed confrontation, another big problem. They just don't have the people. They don't have the proper amount of troops or cops to really interdict when things like this go down. And most of the time, they're outgunned too, unless the military shows up. So when you only have 35 officers and you have a whole ass gang war break out, what are you really supposed to do? Well, we know. You become a reactionary force. You show up after the fact, collect evidence, maybe arrest a couple of people. But that doesn't help the people who were caught in the crossfire, and it certainly doesn't help the eight people who got killed. Following the deaths, the leader of a local independent cartel, uh, going by the alias Chapado, said in an audio clip that the leaders of the rival cartel, La Familia, Micho O'Connor, broke their vow with him not to extort the people of Toussaintla. So extortion is a big part of the money for the cartels. Now we think it. We think about the cartels in terms of the amount of drugs that they move, but they have their hands in so many different pies within Mexico that would make your head spin. Immigrants, avocados, wildlife, everything. If you're selling a chicken wing in Mexico, you're paying the price. You're going to pay the tax to the cartels and they are brutal about it. If you don't pay up, you're not going to do business. Well, according to, uh, Chaparo here, his little area of Toussaintla, that was a place where nobody was bothering them for taxes. He wasn't getting taxed, but now this rival group comes in and says, look, homie, you got to pay the tax. And of course, uh, Chaparo here is saying, go F yourself. That's not going to happen. And we see what the result is. Chapado claims that LFM leaders Johnny Hurtado or Lascaga El Pez and Jose Alfredo Hurtado or Lascaga La Freza made that promise to him. So this is all inner cartel politics, folks. One guy says he had a promise from another Plaza boss. That guy says he didn't have the promise. And what does it all come down to? Money, right? It all comes down to money. It all comes down to territory and it all comes down to drug trafficking routes. That's what this is about. We all have somewhere we're trying to get to. In the clip translated by Borderlands Beat, Chapado addresses all the townspeople of Tierra Caliente to Zantla, Benito Juarez, and all of its surroundings to clarify why the chaos occurred. So he's trying to win the hearts and minds. He's saying look, I am defending you folks. These guys are coming here to extort you and I, in my glorious position as your local leader, I'm here to protect you. But remember, you got to pay me the extortion fees too. So basically what he's saying to break it down for you is somebody else wants to tax you instead of me. That's really what it comes down to. These guys want to come in and move in on Chapado's business and get the extortion tax, control the routes and make some more money for themselves and their cartel. He said all of this happened because someone didn't keep their word. And why exactly is this? Well, I had a deal with El Pascado and La Fresa. But the terms of the deal we agreed upon weren't upheld. I accepted their deal and I accepted their deal but I told them to leave me as an independent cartel leader like I initially was. I respect all the different groups because they are all cartels and they are all fighting each other for their own various reasons. But not you, Mr. Pascado and Mr. Fresca who gave me your word that my townspeople wouldn't be extorted. So he's getting extorted now by the other cartel. They're trying to move in on his territory, they're trying to make their move and he's not having it. He's fighting back. We have been living free from extortion here for the last 15 years and now after 15 days, two or three hitmen were sent to collect an extortion fee from me to collect everything they could. So now it looks like I lied to the townspeople but it's only because you lied to me. You made me look like a total dumbass by lying to me. He went on to accuse the LFM of killing innocent civilians before asking how far do you want to go with this? So he's basically declaring war on La Familia Michoacan and telling them that they started this. This is their beef that they started and how much further do they want to go? And he's also trying to plead with the townspeople at the same time so he doesn't lose them. Telling them that it wasn't his fault, the guy from La Familia, well he lied to me. So now I have to have some retribution obviously. And once again, who's caught up in the middle of all of this bullshit as these idiots play their game of thrones? That's right, normal everyday people. And they're going to continue to be the people who carry the burden of an ill-fought war on drugs. All right, folks, that's going to do it for this episode.
