ICYMI: James Cameron Comments On The Oceangate Disaster

James Cameron, a man who might know a thing or two about a thing or two when it comes exploring the Titanic wreckage in a submersible and he has some pretty strong opinions about the Oceangate expedition and about the implosion of the Titan subersmible that was used by the company.

We also have a letter from The Marine Technological Society who expresses their unanimous concerns about the construction of the Titan submersible and the fact that it didn't undergo the proper testing regiment to be deemed worthy as a commercial vessel.

If we're going to listen to anybody when it comes to the Titanic, I would think that James Cameron might know a thing or two about what's going on down at depth and what's going on at the Titanic in general, considering the guy's been down there like 33 times. He would know what's good and what's not good as far as equipment, as far as a plan and he certainly knows a thing or two about safety obviously considering he's went down there so many times without his submersible blowing up. I think it's safe to say that James Cameron knows a thing or three about exploring down at the Titanic rec site and he had a few things to say about this implosion as you can imagine. Today's article is from the New York Post headline, Titanic director James Cameron rips Titan sub. The disaster was preventable. This article was authored by Lee Brown. Titanic director and submersible pioneer James Cameron has ripped the makers of the Doom Titan sub for not getting it certified, fearing the death of its CEO and for Taurus could now halt further deep sea exploration and I don't think it should do that. I don't think that this one circumstance should be a guideline for everybody else because this guy was irresponsible because he didn't have his equipment right, doesn't mean all the other explorers and people who want to go on adventures should suffer. But if you're going to have a commercial business and you're dealing with something like going down to those depths, you have to make sure that your equipment is top notch. You have to make sure that your gear is the right gear and it can't be stuff that you buy from the camping store or off the shelf. Cameron, who has made 33 trips of his own to the Titanic wreckage accused Ocean Gate of destroying 63 years of similar pioneering by eschewing obvious safety protocols and warnings from experts. One of the saddest aspects of this is how preventable it really was. Cameron 68 told the BBC saying he was struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself. And that to me was the greatest heartbreak of the whole thing said the director, who was friends for 25 years with one of those who died, French Titanic expert Paul Henri Narjalei, who was 77. He called Submersible Travel a mature art where there are no serious incidents since 1960 making it the safety gold standard. Well, that ended huh, and all it took was one knucklehead who thought that his backyard submarine was going to be the business. Here's an idea, carbon fiber in your hall for a Submersible that's going down that deep? Probably not a good idea, and I'm certainly not an engineer. But you would think that if you're going to go down there and bring other people, that that sub has to be above standard. And unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. I would never design a vehicle to take passengers and not have it certified, he further told The New York Times, and that's exactly where I'm at. See for me, I think adventure and exploring is something that is just ingrained in us as humans. I do the same thing, look, I go on high risk expeditions, I like to climb at high altitude, so I'm not going to knock somebody for chasing their dreams wherever it takes them. But the responsibility on an expedition is paramount, whether it be a guide on a mountain or in an extreme circumstance like this, the submarine better be up the par. And if it's not, go down on your own. If you want to go and explore in your developmental craft, hey, have at it, buddy, I say have a great time. And if that would have been the case here, and this gentleman would have been down there, Mr. Stockton Rush on his own, and the submarine would have been bloated as he was testing it and taking it on my trial runs and stuff, I wouldn't have one bad thing to say about the guy. He was doing what he should have been doing if he planned on going on these expeditions. But obviously, something was flawed in the design, and it led to this catastrophic failure that turned into an implosion on the descent. I'm worried that will be tarred with the same brush, and forced under even more strict regulation that could halt further missions, he warned in his BBC chat. He noted a letter sent by the top players in the deep submergence engineering community that warned Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush, the Titan pilot, among the five who died, that his sub was too experimental to carry passengers and that it needed to be certified. And I actually have that letter right here, so we're going to read it real quick. March 27th, 2018 Oceangate Inc. 1205 Craftsman's Way, Sweet 112. Over at Washington, 98201. Dear Stockton, this letter is sent on behalf of our industry members who have collectively expressed unanimous concern regarding the development of Titan and the planned Titanic Expedition. Our apprehension is that the current experimental approach adopted by Oceangate could result in negative outcomes from minor to catastrophic. That would have serious consequences for everyone in the industry. The MUV industry has earned itself an enviable safety track record over the past 40 years. This is partly due to the diligent engineering discipline and professional approach exercised by members of the industry but also due to the collective observation of and adherence to a variety of safety standards. This reputation is solid because it was hard won over many years of diligence application and has resulted in a safe and successful record of operation. Our members are all aware of how important and precious the standing is and deeply concerned that a single negative event could undo this. Your marketing material advertises that the Titan's design will meet or exceed the DMV GL safety standards yet it does not appear the Oceangate has the intention of following DMV GL class rules. Your representation is at minimum misleading to the public and breaches an industry-wide professional code of conduct we all endeavor to uphold. We do all agree that a performance-based testing program for design verification is a recognized and valid approach to new technologies. However, we recommend at a minimum you institute a prototype testing program that is reviewed and witnessed by DMV GL or ABS. While this demand may add additional time and expense it is our unanimous view that this validation process by a third party is critical as a component in the safeguard that protects all submersible occupants. Together we are all beneficiaries of the excellent safety record of MUV operations over the years but each one of us is also a steward with a responsibility to sustain this achievement. We would be grateful if you could confirm that Oceangate can see the future benefit of its investment in adhering to our industry accepted safety guidelines and protocols for ultimate success and that of the MUV community. So as you can see here there were clearly concerns in the community as far as the submersible goes and the safety of the submersible at depth but obviously Stockton Rush decided that he was going to ignore his peers and continue on continuing on. I'm struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result. And for a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheated to take place at the same exact site I think is just astonishing it's really quite surreal he said, yeah it's a bit crazy there's no doubt and I've seen a lot of people talk about how there was a migrant ship that capsized with a gigantic loss of life and nobody talked about it and it wasn't getting as much publicity and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we're talking about the Titanic here. One of the most historic shipwrecks if not the most historic shipwreck in the history of the world and that certainly played into the fascination with what was going on. If this submersible was lost in just some random part of the ocean sure there'd be some stories about it but nowhere near the interest and that all has to do with the Titanic. That's really what it comes down to. Ocean Gates co-founder Guillermo Sondline addressed the director's criticism early Friday defending the very robust testing by the company he was CEO of until 10 years ago. Robust testing huh? That robust testing didn't work out so well did it considering that this thing popped like a grape when it got to depth. A new law is helping me save more money on prescription drug costs. I think everyone keeps equating certification with safety and is ignoring the 14 years of development of the Titan sub he told the BBC look if it was me talking about how this sub is garbage and how it was built incorrectly you could take that opinion and throw it right out the window what the hell do I know about design but when you have the industry as a whole writing you a letter in unanimous fashion saying that your vehicle isn't up to standard you should probably listen to what they have to say any expert who weighs in on this including Mr. Cameron will also admit that they were not there for the design of the sub for the engineering of the sub for the building of the sub and certainly not for the rigorous test program that the sub went through this was a 14 year technology development program and it was very robust said sonheim who remains a minority equity owner of ocean gate after handing over control to rush who was 61 yeah this guy is going to face all kinds of legal liability still has a hand in the company no wonder he's out here at the forefront talking about how safe things were tell that to the people that blew up on that submersible anyone who operates in that depth of the ocean knows the risk of operating under such pressure he said noting how it was equivalent of the weight of the Eiffel tower yeah we all know everybody knows but people don't go down there in an experimental sub with paying customers that's the problem here not that you are going down there in your sub which your buddies great have fun the second it becomes a commercial experience well you're putting yourself in the crosshairs of regulators you're putting yourself in the crosshairs of people are going to criticize you if shit goes wrong Cameron meanwhile said that it was almost immediately obvious that the titan had imploded despite the headline grabbing multi-million dollar rescue operation he said this week it felt like a prolonged nightmarish charade where people were running around talking about banging noises and talking about oxygen and all this other stuff I know that the sub was sitting exactly underneath its last known depth and position and that's exactly where they found it he continued again if you're going to talk about the Titanic and what's going on with the Titanic I would think James Cameron is probably a pretty good source a much better source than the knuckleheads who were running ocean gate considering mr. Cameron has been down there 33 times he held Narjalei as a legendary submersible dive pilot who had been a friend of his for 25 years for him to have died tragically in this way is almost impossible for me to process he said of the expert who died alongside rush British billionaire Hamish Harding 58 and businessman Shahzada Dawood 48 and his 19 year old son Suleiman Dawood so look there's a reckoning coming folks there's no doubt that ocean gate is going to have a lot to answer for and the fact that people like James Cameron are coming out and talking this way about the way the submarine was built the way it was operating and you add all of that to the letter from the other people in the industry and it certainly looks like negligence on the part of ocean gate so there's going to be a gigantic investigation and I'm thinking that once everything is said and done and that investigation happens we're going to find out that this design was not seaworthy at that depth and that commercial passengers should have never been on it alright folks that's going to do it for this one all of the information that goes with the episode can be found in the description box an official message from Medicare a new law is helping me save more money on prescription drug costs you may be able to save to with Medicare's extra help program my premium is zero and my out-of-pocket costs are low who should apply single people making less than twenty three thousand dollars a year or a merry couples who make less than thirty one thousand dollars a year even if you don't think you qualify it pays to find out go to ssa dot gov slash extra help paid for by the u.s. department of health and human services
