ICYMI: Was The Crime Scene In Moscow Staged By The Killer?

Crime scene staging refers to the intentional alteration or manipulation of a crime scene to mislead or throw off an investigation. This may include moving or rearranging evidence, planting false evidence, or creating a false scenario. Crime scene staging can be done in an attempt to conceal the true circumstances of a crime, such as making a murder appear to be a suicide or an accident. It is a form of criminal deception that can compromise the integrity of an investigation and obstruct justice.

In this episode, we explore the possibility that the alleged Murderer Bryan Kohberger left the knife sheath there on purpose and if so, why would he do such a thing?

Have you heard about the 2018 study that showed half of prenatal vitamins tested had unacceptable levels of heavy metals? No? Well, now you have. I'm Kat, mother of three and founder of Ritual, the company making traceability the new standard in the supplement industry. I remember staring at my prenatal vitamins and finding all these things I was trying to avoid. High amounts of heavy metals, synthetic colorants, and unnecessary ingredients. So, at four months pregnant, I quit my job and started Ritual, because I believe that all women deserve to know what they're putting in their bodies and why. I'm so proud of our prenatal vitamin. The ingredients are 100% traceable, it's third-party tested for microbes and heavy metals, and recently received the purity award from the Clean Label Project. You see, we trace like a mother because, let's be honest, no one cares quite like a mother. But don't just take my word for it. Trace for yourself with 25% off at virtual.com/podcast. One, and welcome back to the program. In this episode, we're going to hear from psychotherapist John Kelly, who has a few opinions about Brian Coburger and the sheath. Now, from the very beginning, that's been a question a lot of people have asked. How is it that a criminology student can end up leaving a sheath of his knife at the scene of the crime? You would think that the sheath would have been attached to his belt, or he would have had it attached somewhere on his body, so that he didn't lose it, right? Now, of course, we have to take into account the fact that he was in the middle of a frenzy, and it could have fallen, and he didn't realize that it fell off of him until later on. But according to Mr. Kelly, he says that this has all the hallmarks of staging. Now, what is staging, you might ask? Well, according to psychology today, staging and posing means that the FBI profiler may also encounter deliberate alterations of the crime scene, or the victim's body position at the crime scene of the murder. If these alterations are made for the purpose of confusing, or otherwise misleading criminal investigators, then they are called staging, and they are considered to be part of the killer's MO. So that's a little glimpse at what staging is, and what John Kelly is talking about in this article when he's talking about staging. So with that in mind, let's get into this article from Fox News, and let's get caught up. Headline, Idaho murders. How does criminology student leave crime scene with blood dripping knife? This is staging 101, says criminal profiler, John Kelly. This article was authored by Michael Ruiz. The Idaho student murder suspect may not have forgotten the K-Bar knife sheath found in bed with two of the four victims. It may have been planted there in an effort to mislead investigators, according to a criminal profiler who has been following the case. And I've always found it quite odd from the very beginning that this sheath happened to be left here. Unless it's one of those things that we talked about previously, you know, him losing it in a frenzy, or maybe one of the victims grabbing at them and accidentally ripping it off of them. That stuff's all possible. But if not, did he leave this here for that purpose of staging to try and throw the investigators off? If you took a pistol out of your holster, wouldn't you put it back in, said John Kelly, a psychotherapist with experience, interviewing serial killers, in an interview with Fox News Digital? I don't know anybody who wouldn't. And if I went fishing and I had to take my knife out, I would put it back in the sheath. And that's a fact, right? If it came in the sheath, chances are you're going to put it back in that sheath. What are you running through the house with just an open knife and exposed knife now? If that's the case, well, the roommate, she didn't see a knife. She didn't say she did anyway, at least not in that affidavit. So where was the knife at while he was running out of the house? Tucked back into his belt, maybe without the sheath. I guess all of that's possible. But you would think that if you came in there with that sheath and as you're leaving, you go to put your knife away. And it's not there anymore that you'd go back and try and get it. But we have to take into account all of the other things and all of the context that is not available to us yet. And things that might seem a bit weird. Well, when you get context, as we have seen throughout this case, it changes things, right? But I find it hard to believe that he would just leave this knife sheath behind and not realize that he had left it. It's a reflective action, he said, adding that a vegan like murder suspect Brian Kohlberger likely put the knife away somewhere in order to keep the blood from contaminating his clothes or vehicle. You're such a clean vegan who's obsessive compulsive about what you eat and everything else, just the hygiene of carrying a bloody knife around, wearing it somewhere on your person as you get out of the house, he said. And I didn't even think about that aspect of it, honestly, the fact that he's a vegan, but him being a vegan didn't stop him from allegedly murdering these kids, right? So I don't know how much of an effect that would have on him carrying a knife that is soiled in blood. The answer may hinge on what a surviving housemate, the only eyewitness saw that night. A police affidavit states that she heard noises, including whimpering and crying, and then saw a masked man with bushy eyebrows, leaving through a sliding door. It makes no mention of seeing an intruder carrying a weapon. And we know the sliding glass door has been talked about previously as a point of entry for the alleged killer. And my guess is that's where he came in from sliding glass door in sliding glass door out. The girl didn't say anything about seeing a knife, Kelly said. Did he put it in his clothes somewhere and have blood all over? Kelly said the sheath may have been left intentionally after being wiped clean of fingerprints, but not thoroughly enough to remove the touch DNA evidence that police found on the snap. And look, that definitely tracks Brian Kohberger, thinking he's smarter than everybody else, thinking he's going to throw the police off. Oh, let me leave this military style knife here and maybe that'll throw them in a different direction. Certainly not out of the realm of possibility and certainly a scenario that I could see playing out. The attacker could have put the knife in a different sheath or some other sealed container left the USMC stamp sheath behind in an effort to cast suspicion on someone with ties to the military. Kelly said this is staging 101 he continued. They're going to look at this and they're going to think it's a military guy that did this, some guy with some kind of training who lives up the road. And that's exactly what a lot of the people on the internet thought right away when they heard it was a K bar style knife. There were a few different types that people were talking about. One, obviously military, the other was a hunter type. Oh, it has to be somebody who's comfortable skinning animals and they're obviously a hunter. Meanwhile, Brian Kohberger is about as much of a hunter as I am and ashes is the moron from Moscow. If he had simply forgotten the knife, police may have found more DNA on the sheath, along with fingerprints, Kelly said. As of a gag order on January 3rd, police have still not recovered the murder weapon. And as I've said several times now, I highly doubt that murder weapon is ever going to get recovered. And the task of them trying to recover it, we're talking about monumental. Look at all of the miles Brian Coburger put between him, and law enforcement, and him, and the crime scene, and how many hours he wasn't under surveillance during that time. That knife could literally be anywhere. That could have precipitated the question, who else did you arrest? Kelly continued, referencing a rumored statement that Coburger made to police when they took him into custody on December 30th. I think he had to believe that he was going to lead them to somebody, some direction, with the sheath there. Kelly's hypothesis is not unreasonable, said Paul Morrow, a retired New York police department inspector, who is also an attorney. And I agree with that, certainly a hypothesis that should be looked at. And if you're looking at this crime scene as an investigator, somebody rebuilding it, recreating it, trying to build a profile on Brian Coburger, you're definitely looking at that angle for sure. The other side of that would be that he was in a mentally altered state. He told Fox News digital. And after killing those kids, you know he was in a euphoric state. That's how these guys get off. Unfortunately, that's what they're into. That's why they're doing this. So he could have easily had a altered state of mind and been in a rush and left that she there. That's the likeliest outcome here. But the hypothesis being put forward by Mr. Kelly certainly needs to be explored as well. Coburger, a criminal justice PhD student at Washington State University, is accused of entering a six bedroom rental home near the University of Idaho campus, just seven miles away around four a.m. on November 13th of 2022. Inside police say he ambushed four students, some of whom may have been sleeping with a large knife. The following day, police found 21 year old best friends, Kaylee Gonzavas and Madison Morgan dead in a bed on the third floor. On the second level, they found housemate, Zanna Kernodel, and her visiting boyfriend, Ethan Chapin. All four had been stabbed multiple times. Coburger faces four counts of first degree murder and the felony burglary charge. He could face a death penalty if convicted. He's being held without bail and is due back in court on June 26th. Judge Megan Marshall issued the initial gag order on January 3rd, shortly after Coburger's arrest, restricting comment from prosecutors, the defense, law enforcement, and other officials. All right, so there is another hypothesis, another theory that's being put forward by one of the experts, like all of those theories, like all of the hypothesis, you got to take it with a grain of salt until we have context until we can see some tangible evidence in front of us that's more than circumstantial. My suggestion is to remember that these experts that are giving us their opinion and good, qualified opinion, mind you, well, they're not working on the case behind the scenes, so they're just giving us their expert opinion on what they know. And while that's valuable, it is not gospel. So what do you folks think? Do you think that he left that cheat there on purpose or was it an accident while he was all gassed up? Show me some emails and let me know. All right, everybody, that's going to do it for this one. All of the information that goes with this episode can be found in the description box.
