Track And Field World Record Holder Butch Reynolds From ESPN's False Positive

ESPN introduces its newest 30 for 30 documentary film, False Positive, premiering Tuesday, June 11, at 7:00pm ET on ESPN and streaming on ESPN+.

Butch Reynolds was one of the biggest track and field stars in the world, a talent in his prime on top of his sport. But when he took a drug test in Monaco in the summer of 1990, his career was upended, and his life was forever changed. Yet then and now, the facts of the case shed more than considerable doubt on what happened – instead revealing the tale of a man falsely accused and still compelled in many ways to fight to clear his name all these years later. False Positive tells Reynolds’ story in full, beginning with his childhood in Akron, Ohio, to global fame, to his subsequent suspension by the IAAF. It would take years for him to put his life back together, and to this day, the ban continues to shadow his legacy. False Positive delves into Reynolds’ relentless battle to clear his name, revealing systemic flaws within sports governance and the enduring impact of false accusations on an athlete’s legacy. As the documentary makes clear, when it comes to a story like his, the real truth is found beyond the headlines. And it’s that truth that ultimately defines who a person really is.

I'm doing good thank you dude I I feel this is a blessed moment to have the opportunity to share conversation with you because it is time to get your story out there and let's get this darn thing straight because there are so many athletes that are that are wanting to reach the levels that you did and and it's like the slightest thing can change things. You right arrow. Thank you. But to relive it in this documentary on on ESPN spiritually you're strong man you are really strong. You know here I appreciate it. It's challenging don't don't make it that is easy. No it's very challenging even to tell the story again after 34 years but you know I had the faith of God and you know you can do amazing things and I think that you've given me the power to to do this. So yes, I agree with you it's challenging but I can do it. You know it reminds me so much of the story of Samson in the way that Samson was challenged so much was going on and then everything stopped and it's like okay now you've got to find your way back to the strength and teach people around you about how you made your way out of that hell. And yes I can echo the same thing. I mean I read that of course and I read Job as well and tell you that that the spiritual aspect of those stories really helped me you know maintain that spiritual growth but you know sometimes it takes the physical to understand the spiritual and I think I got a lot of physical from you know one of the most tragic and adverse and was Nelson Mandela and when Nelson Mandela was spent 27 years in jail and they come out after two years and he's the president of his country. I mean this man never lost faith. I mean through all that in 15 years but that was hard labor and I felt you know some of the same things I hear of the unjust but nothing like 15 years of hard labor and you never lose faith. So that kind of what the Bible and like you said the Bible the stories in the Bible many of them dealing with adversity many of them dealing with faith and keeping strong you know made a made a world of difference in me being strong and me being here today 34 years they were able to articulate a little bit about what happened. Don't you think your story is also for business leaders as well be who have really put their life in in on the game. They have trained so hard to be the leaders that they are and all of a sudden because of the business world boom it's gone because I mean just watching this documentary. You're here to teach the world how to get back on our feet again and get moving. You know what I yes I came up with something called a gold medal mine is a focus program and I said you know I use five words that since you went there. I you're absolutely right and the five words I use that I tell corporations and tell kids is that you know it's gold you got to set a goal for yourself transition you're going to have life transitions you're going to have ups and downs in life. The topic resolution. This is a different way of solving the problem the different ways to solving those transitional issues you got to go through and the third fourth word is attitude you know you got to keep a positive attitude through life. I mean it will bring you negativity and you look up the news look at this issue look at that issue most of this could be negative you got to find that positivity and you to move throughout this world. And last but not least this team together everyone achieved or you know where you're going to get the teamwork from who's going to be a part of your team and through this process I had to you know bring team together. And you know I had team Reynolds before and I have team Reynolds now team Reynolds now was his wife I have now and my two kids that she that she blessed me with you know my dog was one and a half. And that she graduated from law school this year from a deal house at university and let's me know that the environment was conducive for her to do that. They didn't break me they be in the world governing body for Chuck and Field do not break that kind of mindset and that's the strength there I can be strong but can you be strong for others and be strong for her and in the family. It was very important to me. Where your heart is is in the right place at the right time because one of the things I know that in on the trailer for false positive either the way that you say the righteous and the unrighteous and man when you say that I felt it I mean it moved right through me. I mean it is it's based on that righteous and unrighteous only two paths in life. You know and I had to stay on that righteous path which I was on. You can't say the Olympics going freaking the world record is not a good path. I couldn't say that when I want to try to find another path it was my God. It was it was a very it was a very dark lonely it's not the as Olympian I had to jump off that path quickly because I knew that was not the path. The path I was on was the path to be on that I was hurt I was crushed I was embarrassed from the world on that path. I had to stay on that same path and keep doing the same thing I was doing in order to get back to this part and this is the hardest part. I didn't want to run no more after 92 after 1990 I was done with that piece especially after 1993 when I came back and set another world record. Yes and one more medals I was done after that I had 27 million dollars in my pocket and I had and I came back and I ran. I was done in 1993 but I ran all the way to 2000 because it's just that I couldn't do nothing else I had to stay on that path. You know I was nervous scared to get off that path and that was the path that hurt me but it landed me here staying on that path. I knew that that's why I would tell corporations that's why I tell the youth of the world. You know stay strong keep it moving and keep the faith. Oh my god oh the way that you speak is a way that we need to hear that today. It really is because you speak of truth and transparency. You speak of I have lived it I don't want you to go through it. That's what I love about listening to you speak. That's the truth I mean that's what I've been doing for the last 25 years when I'm working with these youths. You know I got so many kids I cannot count. And I'm not comparing myself to Jesus at all but I know he helped a lot of people that is not in that book. He prayed for a lot of people that's not in that book. And I know that I work with a lot of people that you know I'm not sitting here dropping no names or doing none of that but I work with a lot of people. I'm talking about professional athletes and this youth making them all the way to the NFL or to the major leagues or to the NBA. I touched a lot of youth around this world. But let me ask you this question because I'm a third degree black belt and I know what it's like to be in that ring to be in that competition. But my master in martial arts would sit there and he would say I need you on the sidelines because you're a better student from the sidelines. So when you talk to me about that you're helping a lot of people it's almost like you're on the sidelines and they're in the game. But you learn a lot from the sidelines don't you? To be a leader you've got to be a follower. You've got to learn how to do it. That's what it is. So no I take this experience and I tell them I try to teach them. And it's hard when you opt on a track where you're trying to be the best you can be. You got nervous. You don't feel that you can achieve that. And a lot of times when I set that world record you know my coach gave me the sign. He said 43.81 seconds. He said you can do this. Put this on your bedroom. And I tell my daughter right now. She graduated from law school like I said. She put her goals down and write it down and put it on the wall too. That's what we do around here. We write our goals down. We put them on the wall and we look at them because sometimes you don't feel you can do this. And sometimes you feel like you can do this. And when you look at it no matter what you're going to do it because you got to look at it. And that's the process of moving. Everything's not going to be flowing pretty or easy every day. You got to take the good with the bad. Wow. In your process right now what would have happened if the social media connections would have been there in 1990. I mean it was just getting started in 1990. If you would have had the strength of the social media today would the world have been different? Oh yes. No question. It would have been totally. There's no way that these kids that stood against me per se could understand the magnitude at that time. And I wasn't asking nobody to not go to when I was asking to support me. And that means that they had to do with me. Let's stick together with this process. That way we all will win. I wasn't trying to be selfish. If I get $27 million don't think I'm not going to help these athletes here. I mean that's my goal. That's what I want to do. I'm going to help my kids that I'm working with. I'm not, you know, I'm fine. I'm understanding. It's not going to take a lot for me. You know, that's what they show me. They don't take a lot for me to live in them. You know, I can live very minimal at this time in my life. I love that feeling. Where can people go to find out more about you butch? Because I know that you've got a foundation or something where people can grow forward. Yeah. Butchones.com. You can find me there. You know, I have Instagram. I have Facebook and I have, you know, but butchones.com is the easiest one to do. Man. I know you went through hell but I can't thank you for being the leader. And thank you enough for being the leader that you are. I mean, you had to go through that in order to be who you are in this moment of right now. You know, and I thank God for it. Because like I said before, you know, I set a world record. I'm not going to let that disturb, you know, deter that. You know, my, my, my kids graduate from my college and graduate from law. I'm not going to let that take that part of my life away. And they try. It will. Negativity will but you can't let it do it. You know, it'll make you drink. It'll make you do drugs. It'll make you do a lot of things that you're not happy with them doing. And it will ruin more. It will ruin more. You don't want it to ruin your life because of a positive. Of a lie, you know. Please come back to this show anytime in the future. The door is always going to be open for you, butch. I appreciate your energy and I will be back. Well, you be brilliant today. Okay, sir.
