Hi, it's Charlie Puth. As a writer and producer, I need to get my ideas down. With Bic's four-color pen, I can. It's a really big part of my creative process. If you can get a mental image of the person you would most like to become, begin now to act if that person would act and everything you do. Gradually, imperceptibly, you will actually become that person. It goes back to what the great German poet and philosopher Gerta once said. Before you can do something, you must first be something. Before you can do what you would most like to do, you must first become the person who can do it. Act like the person you want to become. That's not fake until you make it, by the way. This is intentional. Intentionally act like the person you want to become. Because when you intentionally act like the person you want to become, your brain sees you taking those actions, so your brain starts to change the way it relates to you. When your brain sees you high-fiving yourself in the mirror, it starts to go, "Oh, wait a minute. Steven loves himself. Steven's cheering for himself. We don't beat Steven up." The purpose is always there. The purpose never leaves us, because the very purpose is you. You are always the purpose. There may be another purpose, like being a seal or going to college or whatever, but the main purpose in life is you. So if you wake up in the morning and you don't want to do something, you don't care enough about yourself. And that's what you need to really research is, "Man, why am I not doing this for myself?" Because that is the number one purpose in life, is to better oneself. A woman cooking dinner has only to act like a great chef to turn out a better meal. The student who begins to act like a top student will begin to get better grades. You can even look much better by simply acting like the person you would most like to look like and be like. The secret is to get and hold fast in your mind a mental image of the person you would most like to be. Then in every situation, you act and talk as you feel that person would. You make the kind of decisions you think that person would. This is the way to constantly grow into a better, more effective person. You immediately begin to act with more confidence, and confidence is the first step to accomplishment. As your accomplishments begin to grow, which they most certainly will, real confidence slowly takes the place of the part you've been playing. Now your life will not be transformed overnight. There'll be no certain miracles perhaps, but steadily, day by day, you'll grow into the image you hold in your mind. One of my most powerful motivational frames is thinking about the person that I want to become as the destination, and thinking like, "I want to be bulletproof. I want to be bulletproof in these ways. I want to be bulletproof in my marriage. I want to be bulletproof in my business," etc. I think about that man, whoever I want him to be. Like we said, hell, is when you look at who you could have been and realize that you're not that person. Then I think, if I were to make that man, what would I put that man through to make him who he is? It wouldn't be easy times. It wouldn't be quick wins. It wouldn't even be easy wins. It would be the toil and the struggle of achieving and reaching for things that are right out of grasp, that are right above my threshold, and continuing to do that to lift the weight to build the muscle, to break it down and do it over and over again, because that's what creates the character trace that are the man that I want to be. And so when I'm going through those really harder times, I like to think of looking in my mental mirror of like, I'm making you. I'm not there yet, but I'm making you. It was isolation. It was visualization. It was motivation and it was dedication. To get to the pinnacle, it needs to be like that. It needs to be no outsiders. It needs to be... You need to have your team and your focus, and that's it. I don't need friends that aren't involved in this game. So I'm realizing that I have to daily show up for myself if I want my life to be what I want it to be. Right, right. It is a battle. And not only that, but it's like, you have to have some sort of a plan. When I used to be a little bit more aimless, I was just like, "I want things to be good. It wasn't enough." No, no. Because things don't know how to just be good. This is true. All by left to themselves, things go from back to words. Then you have to get serious about another important subject. And that important subject is called personal development. Personal development is striving hard to become the kind of person that you want to be. And to become the kind of person you want to be, you've got to work at it. 10 years from now, you will surely become someone. The big question is, "Who? What are you becoming?" And if you go to work on it now, sure enough, in a very short period of time, you can take on a new direction to become the kind of person you want to be.
