And so when you have a loss maybe and you see something happen that could have been better. And first thing you do is we think about ourselves and what can we do about that? What can we do about that? What can we make that better? So in a way, we react in a very consistent way than as our fans do. And we certainly hear that feedback from our fans. They're passionate. Yeah, just we just have to, we just have to find the right opportunities. It's not a matter of whether we're willing to give up something to get something we are. We should be willing to do that. We're ready to do that. We've just got to find the right matches. And if we do that well enough again, I believe we can remain competitive to stay in this thing, get better in 2024 and also continue that progress going forward. That's Ben Charington, talked on a movie network the other day. And now perhaps he's brought some hope to Pittsburgh about a trade. Getting, I'll get a lot into trade talks this morning about what the pirates could do, what they should do. We'll talk about that because that's a big conversation right now, especially since those comments have come out. So we'll talk about it. If you haven't heard already and of course you can go to 93 seven the fan.com and watch that live stream too. All right with that being said pirate stock four one two nine two eight nine three seven zero call hit me up on X at call us underscore three three that's C A L L A S underscore three three Ben Charington saying a lot of words for 45 seconds about being interested in trading or being ready to make a trade that there's opportunity it seems out there but it has to be the right fit. They're not necessarily unwilling to part with the talent that they already have acquired the young talent the prospects that they have acquired. They're waiting for that right opportunity and this is something Doran and I talked about yesterday about what kind of return you want to get for the guys that you give up or I guess in the pirates case with from their perspective it's you know what what prospect value do they want to give up how much of the future do they want a mortgage for a certain player. So when you think about Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and again the entire league is down this year on offense it's it's really strange and you know I've already emphasized plenty how the national league is weak and the the players performances on each national league team kind of reflect how the teams are so close in records and in the standings perspective this season. It's it's a really touchy situation for me as I think about what kind of prospects I want to give up for certain players that the pirates can get back. Now traditional they wouldn't technically be a blockbuster deal because he's got you know over a year left of control of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. does you get him for a year and a half that to me would be a good deal under like you know last decade or you know 20 years ago circumstances you get you know a guy who's hitting I think he's doing all right he doesn't have as many home runs as some of the pirates do this season but he can still swing it and I feel like you'd get confidence kind of knowing that he has that power potentially he and he can get hot in any moment and he's been ending home runs like crazy too in these the last week that he's been playing so you know he's he's doing well he feels like he's that stereotypical power bet you can get and that would help your team and so with that being said though back in the last decade or 20 years ago I'd say you'd get like maybe a two prospect three prospect you know return for a guy like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and if pirates had to send off you know like a C prospect and then two A's or an A and a B you know type of tier I would I would do that now it's getting a little touchy though because contracts are being heightened and records for contracts are being broken it seems every few years now players are getting paid a bunch and Juan Soto was traded two times since he's been on his you know six years of rookie control I mean he's not technically or rookie anymore but you know what I mean the first contract to get is playing the majors for six years before you get to enter a free agency he got traded from the Padres or to the Padres from the Nationals got a giant haul from that and now he's on the Yankees in the Yankees traded for him and the Yankees gave up a share of current veterans that were starting for them and some of their better prospects to get him and so now you're living in that reality where these teams now saw that and they're starting to say okay you know what we want a Juan Soto type return for our for our guy we want a Juan Soto type return we want a heavy return and now that becomes dangerous it's just all about the economy of sports and the and the way the markets trending and that's what's going to be happening right now is that teams best players or perceived best players they're going to be seen as that now if they're available or they're going to be they're going to be cast out there with perhaps that line we want the it's dubbed the Juan Soto return now and I'm not a I'm not a fan I mean I think that in that case of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would be over spent for if the Blue Jays really want that type of return for him because I don't think that he's well I think he's good and I think he could complement the Pirates lineup with the offense he could bring I'm not prepared to dish out like two a prospects or you know even a you know mid-tier prospect not one of the bottom ones not one of the the guys who just kind of fit in those deals like I feel like it's going to be like two a prospects at least and somebody who's you know starting on your roster right now starting in your lineup right now the Pirates don't really have too many attractive guys on offense that they'd be willing to to give up so yeah and any guy that's that's that's batting right now and worth it who's hitting well and they're not going to want to part ways with so it becomes an interesting case now Juan Soto is also hitting tremendously well with the Yankees or at least he started like he was hitting tremendously well the Yankees have been on a downturn lately so it's kind of hard to judge now I haven't really seen one Soto in the news for doing anything well but I mean when he started I mean he was sitting home runs pretty consistently he's been on base so that's a guy where you pay for what you get with him and the prospects that that the Yankees gave up to get him and then the Nationals acquired to get rid of him what the Padres gave up to get him seems like it was it was worth it in those cases because he has produced the way that you anticipated he would produce and he's doing it at a high level and he's not just you know an upper echelon guy he is one of the best in baseball in terms of hitting and his defense isn't overly spectacular but it's not you know bad it's not bad by any stretch he's pretty good solid defensive outfielder Vladimir Ojunya said his defensive struggles at least when he was a third baseman now he's playing first base nothing you know embarrassing coming out of that end for him I don't think is since he's been a first baseman but still you've got a first baseman you got a guy there who's who's a little streaky I don't think that's a one so to type return you know worthy type of deal there it doesn't seem like it to me I um I think he would compliment the Pirates lineup but that's just one of those those instances where I'm going to agree with with Charington and be a little more on the conservative side of this to say that you want to make sure that you're giving up a healthy amount of prospects not too many and you don't want to be willing to spend too little to not get good returns and I just think that for this team there is a point in time where there's there's too much to give up for certain players I mean if Juan Soto perhaps were available this is just hypothetical but if the Pirates could give up three or four of their top prospects plus uh you know a veteran or two to get Juan Soto on their team from the Yankees that would make more sense because he has produced and he's been producing and he's been a consistent offensive producer and he seems like he's reaching his prime if he hasn't already gotten there I would trade for him if that were something that the Pirates had a need for I would trade for him 100 percent because he is a producer of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. I'm not willing to give up that many prospects that could turn out to all help you in the future for a guy who's batting low to mid 200s even low 200s in some cases some of the guys they're interested in and not quite at 15 homers today it just doesn't make sense because those guys that you have in the minors could develop I think putting a mother did an exercise yesterday that was fascinating too how many prospects have made it so far in the in the trade between the the Nationals and the Padres when when Soto first moved from from Washington to San Diego and I think one's developing well in the minors the other two not really heard from not close and then there's CJ Abrams who's he's one of the best hitters on the Nationals this season so maybe two out of four of the the big prospects in that deal um are going to yield a solid return they're all young guys too so they have time to develop but yeah I mean there's also the question of when you give up prospects like how many of them are actually going to flourish I just feel like and I have this I have this eerie sense to in my head because it seems like the pirates every time that you know somebody gets off the roster that they they go somewhere else and do well it's just seem like that for years and maybe maybe that's not even true maybe that's not um that's not exactly what's happening that might just be my skepticism but um you know I just feel like I would kick myself a little bit if like for Josh Bell they spent for Josh Bell too I said this yesterday I don't think that that's you know a worthy trade because I don't think that Josh Bell is worth you know three guys in your organization that could help you within the next year or two because you're going to get Josh Bell and I feel like he's less likely to produce than some of the other options that could be out there we all belong outside we're drawn to nature whether it's the recorded sounds of the ocean we doze off to or the succulents that adorn our homes nature makes all of our lives well better despite all this we often go about our busy lives removed from it but the your homework four one two nine two eight nine three seven zero got this call on the line who wants to talk so good morning what's your name it's Greg all right Greg what's up regardless the parents do not want to pay no money you're not going to have a good team and baseball when you're not paying out no money you want to have the problems like the pirates all right great i gotta cut you off i can't i can't keep doing this you're not going to spend money thing i can't there's they've spent money they've invested money they're not an upper tier team in spending money they're not one of the biggest spenders then i get it they're 29th overall and payroll among major league baseball teams but they've dished out a contract to Mitch Keller to Brian Reynolds and to keep Brian Hayes they're trying they're trying to make investments they spent 10 and a half million on a rolled his Chapman which i'm fine with and he's output pretty well this year he's had some moments but overall he's still throwing 100 miles an hour and he's still an imposing force out there out of the bullpen Rodney Tiles was given 3.2 million dollars to not do much for two and a half months so maybe you can criticize that one but i mean hear me they're spending money i'm not listening to the criticisms that they're not spending money anymore and i don't think that they need to be spending money like some of these other teams in baseball are i mean the Yankees their biggest payroll hit right now is Aaron Judge's contract alone and maybe Aaron Judge is worth that contract but also you know even with Aaron Judge as good as he was when he first got his deal Yankees still didn't make the playoffs last season the Mets i mean i could go over how the Mets have have tried to to spend money on guys and overpay on guys and they've struggled they're making a turnaround comeback this year which is very impressive but they're not doing it with the guys that they signed one or two years ago the Mack Scherzer and Justin furlanger deals that they dished out did not work out so i i'm not going to sit here and say that the pirates aren't spending money and i'm not going to endorse overspending on guys i mean we have just seen this in history over and over and over again how teams overspend and some of the time they do well but a lot of the time they don't and i mean even speaking to the Yankees i mean i remember and i i mean i love bringing up this point because this is huge if you watch you know any history of the Yankees they won their championships in the in the late 90s because they drafted guys and they developed guys from within they weren't blindly spending George Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball for i think a couple years and and the the team that took over the ownership or the the front office that took over decided to develop instead of blindly spending on players and after Steinbrenner came back and the Yankees lost in two world series and Steinbrenner went nuts again and he decided to spend more money on a bunch of random players a bunch over the hill players we just had you know the the big names and the reputations behind them and the Yankees stowed it and win much and then they broke it down a little bit again and that's why they won in 2009 they acquired two big guys at reasonable prices to share and spathia and then they won because of that they weren't balanced spending at that point though and they were developing certain guys as well but even the Yankees when they were just blindly spending gave them a better chance to make the playoffs but still they weren't winning world series just by blindly spending and they haven't been in the world series since 2009 so it's a touchy sport and it's a touchy subject i'm not going to sit here and listen to people talk about how the pirates aren't spending enough we've seen it in history time and time again spending does not necessarily work big overly conservative doesn't work either but overspending really doesn't work in major league baseball it really doesn't there aren't too many teams that have overspent that have done well the teams that usually do well have a healthy balance of one or two veteran guys on the team that get those bigger contracts and a bunch of other young prospects who are reaching the pinnacle of their development that's how major league baseball has typically succeeded in in in time so um that's why i think that it's it's an interesting conversation too because part of this trade talk scenarios or these trade talk scenarios that we're that we are discussing now has to do with okay now how much are the pirates willing to spend with their prospect collateral how much are they willing to give up for certain guys there are certain guys that i think okay i'd give up a little more here there are certain guys that i would say you know what that guy is not worth it right now to give up other guys who could develop for you in the next year or two which i know you guys hate hearing that i know fans hate hearing that but josh bell really you're gonna give up you know a josh bell who's batting near 200 is around it's kind of like a delete below average right now he would not lead the pirates if you put them on there today and you want to get that josh bell and give up a solomato and a and a teramore johnson for josh bell no you got to find that right fit though so i'm gonna agree with charrington a little bit there and you know me i mean if you listen to the show i don't agree with everything he says but if he's gonna tell me he's gonna say you know what we're waiting for the right fit i kind of trust that because i'm not giving up a one so-to-all for Vladimir Guerrero jr and i'm not giving up even some of my top prospects for josh bell this is not happening fan weather brought to you by sunshine for late 24 silverado lt crew cab up to $7,500 in rebates full terms and qualifications at sunshevy.com today i have 88 low of 58
