Chris Sutton is out in Germany still in the stadium after watching the Netherlands beat Turkey to set up that semi-final with England England leader Pelties, Christopher again. But was it a better performance? I think it was, Rob. I mean, Mouse Ward, because isn't it, the semi-final against the Netherlands. But do you know what? Do you know what, Rob? Gareth Southgate has proved a hell of a lot of people wrong throughout this tournament. I'm delighted with him. I don't know if you listen to the interview where Gareth talked about beer being thrown at him in certain games and what have you. That is not a way to treat an England manager. I am absolutely delighted for him. You think about his record as England manager at the last four tournaments, three semi-finals and a quarter-final. People are saying that he's not an inventive manager and he's a poor manager. Again, isn't it, Gareth? Gareth Southgate. That's why he should be named, Rob. Well, listen, I know you're the celebration police, Christopher. We've seen it, you know, they're celebrating, like, they've won the thing. They've only beat Switzerland in the quarter-files on penalty. They're all dancing at the end. Come on. Come on, Rob. I mean, it's a big tournament winning today against... It's dancing at the end, you've got the fair, little penalty. Against a really good Swiss team. A really good Swiss team. It will warn the game in 90 minutes in five. Come on. Where are they, Rob? In the semi-finals. Why can't you get excited? And the performances, I think, they're growing. I've got to say, if there was any criticism of Gareth, I thought the subs were pretty reactive, so I get that. But it's about getting over the line tournament football and he's done it again, so people... I want people to call in tonight and give Gareth credit. Remember, at the last time we were on and people were saying, "Well, Gareth's not up to the job and what have you?" Those people should phone in and apologise to me. Does it matter, Chris, that in 240 minutes of knockout football, they would have had five shots on target. Does it matter? They're in the semi-finals. Exactly. That's the only thing that matters. Just think in years to come, if England go on to win it, people are going to talk, you're going to use that stat, which is designed to have a pop-up Gareth. Why are you doing that? So, you've just seen the Netherlands. I was watching on the TV with a sound down, Christopher. Is Van Dyke suspended for the semi-final? Is Deno with you? Didn't I get that right? Deno is here. Is Van Dyke suspended for the semi-final? Deno against England. He doesn't think so. I listened to you hammering Deno. I thought you really were fair to last them. It's Deno, you're a brilliant commentator. Everything might Deno. Don't listen to Christopher. Well, he didn't get right. The goal scorer, Gagfoe, did he? It was an own goal. And, you know, it's not shaking his head at me. He doesn't get much wrong, but that was a bad miss from the great guy. Oh, 8, 2, 8, 5, 9, 0, 9, 6, 9, 3. It's a number to call. So, just on that set, just on that set, me finally, before we go to Russell-Chris, England, or the Netherlands. And I heard you were cally saying it's 50-50. 50-50 Rob. 50-50 Rob. You need to be pretty predictable. What do I need to do? I've got every prediction right in this last round. I think I said 2-1 to the Netherlands. It's like maybe 2-1 or 3-1, but I got that right. But I need to see what happens over the next couple of days, how the team respond, how they warm down, whether they're doing their ice baths and the preparation. Then I'll make a balanced judgment, Rob. My predictions are scientific. OK, then, away to 8, 5, 9, 0, 9, 6, 9, 3. Right then, Chris. Russell is on the way back from the game. How are you, Russell? Hello, boss. All right, very well, thank you. A little horse. Well, you were behind the goals for the penalties. Well, wouldn't you? Yeah, behind the goal for the... throughout the game, out of the England end. Yeah, behind the goal for the penalties. Yeah, amazing atmosphere. Pinch me moments. See, get through another penalty shoot out there. And do you know what? Chris is right, isn't he? You know, no matter how England have played, one win in 90 minutes in five, within the 75 and Gareth Southgate finds a way. Exactly. I mean, we've sort of bothered our way through and now we're starting to take those extra big steps. I mean, obviously the Slovakia result, like in the manner that we did, obviously gave us the impetus, and we just took that extra little step today. And now we're just hoping that we can take that extra stride, a bigger stride on Wednesday, and who knows where we can go. But yeah, fantastic effort from each and every one of them tonight. And I'm not just the players. All the fans beyond the goal, being with fans throughout the stadium, being the fans at home as well, I'm sure, and getting behind the team. But we see that it's a good time to be an England fan. Yeah, and Russell, of course it is. Gareth Southgate listened to his interview after the game, and he referred back to when he walked out in front of the fans, and there was beer thrown at them, and that clearly upset him. I mean, do you think he was right to bring that up? And I mean, that sort of behavior, that's unforgivable, isn't it, really, towards an England manager? Yeah, it wasn't nice to see. I thought that was my own eyes. But again, I lost gas in charge from me personally. I'm going to get behind him. And if he felt the need to bring it up, then fair play to him. If he feels he, that's the way to get it off his chest. And sort of, he was dancing on the pitch at the end. He was enjoying the result in front of England supporters. And if he felt the need to bring that up and get it off his chest then all is foreign. And if it helps him sort of move forward to have semi-final things, yeah, let him do what he wants. He'd be taking a great ride over these ages. Russell, a man who's paid significant amounts of money to do predictions, you know, on the BBC. He's 50/50, can't give one. So come on, Russell. No, not yet, Rob. Are you going for a concert in England? I've got to go for England, haven't I? I'm England through and through. I've followed England for however long. I've been in and out for every game in this tournament. We've just got to keep the face. Come on, score. What's the score, Russell? What's the score, Russell? We're going to have a, let's have a two-nil victory. Or maybe we can do that four-one again. And Russell, when it went to penalties, did you? What were you thinking? Penalties, all. You're always thinking back to the England and penalties, aren't you? We know the history, but you can remember now that penalty who do against Columbia, the penalties people may not remember that we would previously put past Switzerland in the nation's league, slowly but surely. This penalty who do that we've had is being erased away and tonight has shown that as well. I was nervous, of course I was. But when you saw every player step up, and especially Prochiah Saka, I was there for the Wembley final three years ago when he was, when he was a boy, he became the man tonight. We saw him take that penalty and that weight off from his shoulder is much like Stuart Pitt or something. It was just taken from his shoulders. It breeds confidence throughout that lap. Russell, thank you. Russell, thank you so much. A big shout out to Saka, Chris. The big smile on his face after the game, Steve Holland, pointing to Saka with the fans. They were singing his name. They were cheering. The five penalty takers, Chris, Palmer. He's got ten out of ten, I think, which is for Chelsea this season. You look at all the penalty takers. You're fancying to go with the penalties because how... Don't hold it there. You do, Chris. What a penalty. What a penalty. But then we saw... I watched France v Portugal, Rob went through that dreadful game last night, went to penalties and everybody because of what the Portuguese goalkeeper did in the previous round. Everybody thought that they were going to go on to win it. Let's hope he's not Joan at England by saying that. Sean, how are you? Thanks. OK, Sean, but... Yeah. Listen, not a great game, not a great performance, but as Chris alludes to, Southgate has got England into another semi-final. Absolutely not a great game, but what a great win. Is that what it's all about, Sean? Where did you watch the game from? I watched this home with my family. I didn't expect much, but again, I've been following England since 1982 and I'm used to it by an F. And the formation... Sean and Chris, the formation, Chris, worked the 3-4-2-1 with the 2-10s, sack it on the right. Listen, I thought he might have played him on the left, but to keep him on the right, the way he played, I thought he was outstanding, sack it. He got the goal from that right, cutting it on his left. The formation worked today for Southgate. It did. I mean, Sean, is it fair to say if there was one criticism of Gareth, it was that his substitutions were reactive? Is that fair, Sean? It's fair, yes, but then again, substitution should be reactive in some ways. He could have sort of preempted it a bit before that, but it did the trick. I mean, something I'd noticed was, first of all, Switzerland, they're one of the best teams I've seen in the tournament so far. As would Turkey, unfortunately, have gone out tonight, but then again, we won't have to play them now. But I do think that England has sort of slowly sprung into life almost, I mean, hopefully not totally like, but a bit like the 1990 World Cup, they edged it through the group and they're slowly picking up pace. I'll say it slowly. Sean, do you think there's an element that there are a lot of people in the country who really put the boot into Gareth Southgate and said a lot of quite nasty things about his England team and the way they were playing? Do you think there was any justification in that? And do you think a lot of people, some pundits out there will get egg on the face? Well, I hope so. I hope the will. I mean, I don't dislike the pundits that have had to go with him, but then again at the same time, if they do, it means England won the tournament. So, yes, hopefully the will. Listen, it was speaking, but you're speaking like this. It's free-flowing, beautiful football. They've had five shots in 240 minutes of tournament football, this scraping through games. Listen, if they'd have lost today, this tournament would have been completely different. It would have been terrible. They've gone out to Switzerland. You're speaking, Chris, just if they've played beautiful free-flowing football. But they went through, it was tournament football. What's tournament football again? What is tournament football about football? No, I wouldn't know. It's about winning, isn't it? Yeah. Tell us about winning, but don't speak like they've played beautiful, great, free-flowing football. They've had five shots in 240 minutes, and it's boring and dull to watch. So, hang on a minute. So, when Portugal won the Euros in 26th. They won it, but they won it. England won it. Yep. But they're through to the semi-finance of Y. But they haven't won it. So, hang on a minute. So, England played well today. Okay. Well, you think England played well, do you think England played well? Do you think England played well? I'm just saying, let's not have a bad argument. Why do you think England played well? It's not balanced. Yes, I do. Do you think England played well? Really? John, do you think England played really well today? I think they've played well enough to subdue Switzerland and stop them winning. They didn't play particularly well. They've not particularly played well this tournament, but two more wins that I'd do it. Yeah, it certainly will, Sean. Thank you so much. Why are you called? Well, it's played well against Gibraltar. Not talking about Wales, Chris. We're not talking about Wales. This is England in the semi-final. Gaddis Southgate has gone through again. Chris, what do you think of Brighton? I think that I'm delighted that England win of one. But I think there's such a paucity of ambition watching us play that it's devastating. And I don't want to be a negative on the night when everyone should be celebrating. But if you watched the games last night and you see the movement, the fluidity, the ambition of other teams, it is utterly ludicrous how poor we are playing. So you watch both games, did you last night? So you're complimenting Portugal and France on their movement and fluidity, are you? Well, I would say if you watched last night, Dempelli came on and ran at people. Again tonight, we have no one doing that particularly. Saka, I think, was really good. Portugal. Well, hang on a minute. You said we had nobody doing that particularly. How did Saka score? Well, back with these one shot. How many shots did we have on par? Hang on a minute. You just said we don't have anybody running at people. And Saka jinxed inside beat a couple of Swiss players and bends into the far corner. Is that not running at people? And shooting quite well. Chris, you could be contrary, but you could also... Something contrary. Well, let me have a word. You could look at the stats and see how many times people run at people in games versus England. It's the lack of ambition. And I love Gareth Southgate. I think he's brought enormous dignity to the job. I think he's a really articulate, intelligent man. But the players play within themselves. And the last caller said, "Oh, Switzerland are a great team. Turkey are a great team." Yes, the word being on team. None of those players hardly any of those players would even get enough squad. Well, no, because they're Turkish and Swiss. Well, that's funny. It's cheap. It's not particularly intelligent. But the point being is they play as a team. And if you think that is absolute best that we can do, let me give you one example tonight. England has just scored. They're put on the throat. And Steve Holland on the side was telling everyone to calm down. And that is the essence of the mentality. Let's not go for it. No, it's not. No, you're assuming that Steve Holland is saying that. It's basically saying, "Use your heads." That's what he's saying. Don't get carried away. Football is a thinking game, isn't it? Yeah, it is. And normally, when people say that they pointed their heads and used their heads, he was putting his arms down to say, "Everyone calmed down." And actually, England was totally on top at the time. And there's a defensive mentality and an inability. I mean, one of the things that's most extraordinary is Trippia has not been good on the left. We know that it's not his fault. He's not left footed. But we could have started with Shaw and gone for it and then decided to shut up shop. But ambition is always lacking. And as soon as we close last game, he started, I think, was in February. So I don't agree with the call-up of Shaw. I think it was too big a risk. And so Luke Shaw is a brilliant footballer. And I get that in an ideal situation. I don't know if it is, Rob. I do agree, Chris, with what you said, in an ideal situation. But I don't know, you know, all I've heard, Rob, is last few weeks has been struggling with injury. Now he's back and that was a bit of a gamble from Gareth putting him in. So I understand your point, Chris, in that respect. But he has to be sure that his fitness is up to scratch. Well, I would just ask you, Chris, to back, did he make a difference when he came on? Absolutely. Did we have to break a whip? Absolutely. He must be fit. Why not start? I mean, if it doesn't work, change it, rather than always playing in such space within yourself. It doesn't do us any justice. I was in a pub watching it tonight. And everyone is heading their hands at our time. It is so boring. And of course, we're English. We want us to win. But if you think, just by saying Gareth's a great guy, these are players who are at the top of their game. And if you think that it's generally the best that we can do, playing the system we do, playing the technique that we play, I just think you're wrong. And to say anyone who Chris or his Gareth is some sort of doomed slayer or disrespectful, it's wrong. These players are not playing to their full potential. Chris, can I ask you, so the pub at half time, people had the heads in the hands, what was the pub like at full time? But everyone left and said, we've got away with it again. And it's the best ambition we've got for us. That must be the most miserable pub in England, if that's the case. You should go there, Chris and me. Dear me, Chris, come on. You're better than that. Oh, he's gone, Chris. He's gone, Chris. He's gone home. He's gone home. He's gone, dear me. He's got some points so Chris, there's boring to watch. But you've got them, you've made the best point. He's gone to the Southgate, has got England, he finds a way to get to the Southgate. Well done, listen, I'm pleased with him. You know, when you say Gareth South, great. It's a bit far. It's a bit far. He has been, Rob. He has been a great England manager. One of the greatest England managers of all time, Rob. Oh wait, oh wait, five, nine or nine, six, nine, three. We've got Chris for another 25 minutes. Then he's got to leave the stadium. The UK's biggest football debate. This is 606 with Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage. On Five Live. It's not that they're cutting in field. Oh, I think, what a goal. Through a crowd of players. The Kaiosaka makes it one-one. What a relief from all of these income supporters in the stands. Welcome back to the 606 08 25, nine or nine, six, nine, three. I've got to say, you know, John Murray and the team, Deno and you, Chris and the team, brilliant commentary tonight. On Five Live, bringing it to the listeners. 08 25, nine or nine, six, nine, three. On Saka, Chris, I thought it was outstanding. You know, it's penalty, it's goal, it's overall perform, especially at first target, the beating of the fall back. I thought he was brilliant. Yep, absolutely. Then you think that, you know, England have the luxury of Chuck and Cole Palmer on a player like that. It was so unlucky not to start. I liked what Gareth did in terms of the substitutions. I'd have just liked to have seen him make the substitutions early. You see other teams in the tournament. I know Germany arrived, but Nargalsman was pretty decisive. We saw tonight the Dutch Rob, half-time, bake horse Don. You can't beat the big number nine, can you? And he made a huge difference. But what a position England and the country Rob should be excited. You could be a bit more excited. I liked the England fans, 0-8-5, 9-0-9. You're excited Rob. 6-9-0. Listen, personally Chris, I liked England too, isn't it? Yeah, I would. I would. I'll tell you a thing. Yeah. What? Right, let's go. Let's go to Jay's in Leeds, how are you, Jay? Yeah, oh, good. Thank you, guys. How are you, guys? Yeah, we're good. Thanks. Come on then. Jay, England, Netherlands, next. Good performance today or a performance we've seen them through? It was a good performance. It was a good performance, especially the fact that it's after a very, very long time we played somewhat decent football at times. Yes, Switzerland put us on the back foot. I thought Kobe Menon was sensational again today. I think he's being the, I think that's where Gareth gets it, right? He does get it right. His in-game management can be questionable, but what he does at the beginning of the game and the team that he selects and the formations he goes, he tends to get it right. And I think I always get really frustrated because football isn't a beauty contest. It isn't about who plays the most beautiful football. It's not about the who plays, the most attacking football, how many patterns there are and how many players play in possession and who moves off the ball and who doesn't, especially in tournament football is getting through. I couldn't count with it because in 10-15 years, you're going to remember how he played. Oh, Jay. You're going to, you're going, oh, can you hear me? You're just breaking up, Jay. Go on, you're making some good post. Come on, Jay. Yeah, I was just saying that in 10 or 15 years time, no one's going to ever remember what kind of style Gareth South gave played. I'm not, by no means comparing him to Sir Alex Ferguson here, right? But when we use, when Man United, as a Man United fan, when we used to play in Europe, right, we never played the same we played in the Premier League. We were defensive, we'd go five-inch field, each shot up shot, we'd get one goal, we'd sit back and a lot of people are misguided nowadays in football by how pet players and how plot players and longevity of playing good football in the Premier League. I agree, you need that, but in tournament football, it's all about winning the tournament, especially when you've got the players. No matter how you play. That's what I'm saying. But he's on course. He has got us to places where we have never got, and we've had many managers who have played back in football in England. We had Terry Venables, we had Glenn Hodl, we had Sven Gorin Erickson, we had so many and Brian Robson, you know, Brian Robson. So would you have had Southgate, would you have had Southgate, just say then Jay, they lose in the semi-finals, hypothetically, Tennag didn't sound that new contract. United got rid of him, you'd have had Southgate at Man U. No, I made a clear point that over the course of the season, how you play matters because you wouldn't have had him, so you just have kind of Southgate for tournaments. Yeah, you wouldn't have him at Man U. Yeah, yeah, he's an international manager. He's an international manager. Like Luis Felipe Scallari was an international manager. There are certain managers that can only do it in international management. And that's the truth of it. And over the course of time, if you look at the great side, the Brazilian teams who won it, none of them managers were particularly good in football, and it's by subversive. And the other thing that irritates me about the way that we get on the guy's off here, and I understand that, yes, we want to see what good football being played, but do we really care? Like, how we win the tournament? Does it matter that we've only won one game in 90 minutes? Oh, cares. Robbie, if Wales were in the tournament and they didn't win any game, you'd be buzzing with them being in the semi-final. 100% totally, they were in 2016, weren't they? Yeah, I just think that a lot of fans get on the back and they don't understand that international football is completely different to court. So what if he doesn't win it? So what if he doesn't win it, Jay? So what if he doesn't win it? It's still been a success, doesn't he? Don't win it, Jay, tell him about winning, tell him about winning. So if he doesn't win, if he go out to the Netherlands, will people look back and say, "Oh, do you know what? We got us through a group, a poor group. You know, we scrape through to the semi-final." Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's so disrespectful. It's a fact, it's a fact. It's a fact. It's a fact. Look, Robbie, Robbie, Robbie, do you guys not look back at the... When you go to the semi-finals, there's a crowd achievement for Wales. Do you not? Yeah, we'd be Belgium. Was it Beybells? Was it Beybells? Was it Beybells in 3-1, played Centrelating Football? Exactly, you got through, you got to... Play in great football. And... It doesn't matter, you play good football in one game against Belgium, yeah? We still got one game, maybe two games to go in this tournament. Who knows how we're going to play it? But the thing that really gets me is the fact that, yet, he makes sometimes either reactive manager, but sometimes it needs to be. If it's not, it just baffles me how people come on and say, "You know what, it's boring, it's not good, it's all this time to over." In 10 years' time, if we win it, then great, if not, he's giving me great memories, he's giving Chris game memories. We've won penalty shoot out to a tree never won before, right? We've got to semi-finals, we've got to a final on English territory, and we've only just lost that. He's given me great memories, man, and I don't really care how we play football. It's what he does and how we get through. And he makes it proud to be an Englishman to know that, you know what, we're actually playing football and we're getting through, and we're not getting knocked out in quarterfinals on last six teams or against Iceland or whoever. And that is bigger than if we win it. If we win it, it's an addition, it's a cherry on top. But the memories that I've had today and the memories in Colombia, and when we got to the semi-finals, we got to the final. This is what he can't buy this to. People need to cheer up, man. You know what I mean? Cheer up, Chris, yeah, well, yeah, well, yeah, well, yeah, well, yeah. Cheer up, Chris. Cheer up, Chris. It never is, no, but the point made there is absolutely wrong. You know, I think the country bar a miserable percentage. It's very small percentage. Most of the country absolutely delighted with Gareth Southgate and the job that he is doing. He is in your life proving people wrong. What percentage of the country is miserable then? Would you always get like 3% of the country? Who won't be excited? Which percentage are you in? In general, in general? Listen, my stance has always been consistent on Gareth Southgate. I think he gets a kicking off a lot of people unfairly. And I love it. I absolutely love it when England win because it's on Gareth Southgate and people don't want to get it. Even when they win, even when England win, they don't want to give Gareth any credit. I guarantee you will have a caller on in the, you know, before I go in a bit, moaning about Gareth Southgate and his tactics when, you know, England are in another semi-final and the country should be proud and happy about that. Well, we've got Liam, Jed, to come. Let's go to Muhammad first. How are you, Muhammad? Yeah, I'm all right. How are you? Yeah, we're good. Thanks. Come on then. Yeah, I thought, I thought, I thought, 'Parma done well when he come on, Muhammad.' Yeah, I mean, I'm biased because I'm a trophy fan, but, oh, my... Can I just say something? I disagree with everything Jay from Leeds just said. No. I just agree with it. There's no way, like, to... It's because, all right, I give Gareth's name there, like, birthday, forget his performances side. But, I give the formation change a K, he's done good. Muhammad didn't start, came with that. I'm saying, what the changes this gave? What did he do? Where was the holder play? What, were you gonna do? Drop in? I barely saw him. I'm not... No, drop, okay, you caught up with Strike and I scored 40 goals for my meeting. I wouldn't need that. We have to accommodate to him. I don't think... I don't think Gareth has the managerial attribute. I don't think he's a very good manager. I think the international football may be different from comfortable, but, there again, if he wasn't comfortable, what kind of standard will come? What did he be at? What did he be at? I'm on C. Oh, would he be at a purpose? And let's stop. I'll burn you. Tell me. You tell me. Hang on a minute. So, you're knocking Gareth's advocate for his achievement three semifiners and the last four tournaments. Are you? Oh, three semifiners. Okay. Okay. But that is a good question. But that's not the point, is it? Okay. That's not the point, but also, Harry Kane is 30 years old. Everyone knows he's a well-cross player, but he hasn't got any questions. So, tell me, like, do you need to disagree with that? Well, you're slamming Harry Kane. You're slamming Harry Kane, and yet he wouldn't drop him. So, what? Why? You're slamming Harry Kane, and yet he wouldn't drop him. So, why are you slamming him? No, I wouldn't. I'm not slamming. I'm not slamming. You have this point in terms of how he's like Harry Kane. Harry Kane, I'm talking about his son. Right now, he has four new cyclists. I'm just saying that we're back. We're back in three years. Okay. It worked today. I wanted him to understand that we got the job done. Depending on the score. Five penalties, five goals. Perfect. Especially with the tradition that he can have. Gareth picked the penalty takers. That's great management. Did he pick them? Did he pick them? Did he build any volunteer? No, I didn't. Chris? Oh, what were they doing here? Tell me. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. So, Gareth picked them today, so he just picked them. Your manager is responsible. So, he takes penalties. Oh, so that's a breaking news. I don't know what you do. I don't know what you do. Oh, you don't know. I don't know what you do at Mackelsfield. But normally, managers who have played under. Also, they can use. They've picked their penalty takers. Breaking news. The Gareth picked the penalty taker as well. Yes. We should give him credit because the last caller didn't think so. And Mohammed said he's right. He don't get a medal for the semi-finals, Chris. Name me the... Name me the... Yeah, but it's... Name me the four semi-finalists in '92, '96 and 2000, the Euros. But... But, Rob, but let's just be balanced. There's a serious point here. And we both know. Gareth Southgate gets a hard time. Yes, it is. From a lot of punters out there. And, you know, he deserves credit for the way that he has managed England over the big tournament. Oh, wait, wait. Five, nine or nine, six, nine, three. He just doesn't break a news on five, five, five. Jed, how are you from Cheshire? How are you, Jed? Yeah, good, thanks. Yeah. Listen, I've come on tonight. To have a court, yes, to be honest. I'm a lot older than you, man. And I watched a 1966 World Cup when I was 11. And I watched every tournament Euro World Cup since then. Now, we weren't a great side in '66. But we got through the games and we won the Cup. Now, Italy won how many tournaments, man? Six. Rob, you dig the files up and have a look at some of the... Some of the displays. Nil-nills, penalty wins, one nil. Absolutely terrible football. But the records show the 1-6 tournament. Southgate is taking players from different systems, from world-class managers, you know, city, Liverpool, Arsenal and so on. And he doesn't have a lot of time to adapt them and show how he wants them to play. And I think he's done a damn good job. I'm more with Jay. When we went one nil down tonight, was watching that with my family. My six-year-old grandson was nearly in tears. And we won and the GI is overwhelming. And I honestly, honestly believe, we'll go on and we'll win the tournament. It might be a board in final against France. But we'll win it, man. The only one team I've ever seen that's won a tournament with absolute flur and be like with Brazil. Look at some of the Argentine wins, and as we go back to Italy and Germany. I watched a brilliant duck side. The best football I've seen, he went out the tournament. Because Germany just ground in there and found a way to beat him. And that's what God is doing. How many happy people in England tonight? Yeah, that's a great point. Are you still there, Rob? Yeah, I think Jad's making some very good points. Some very good points. Well, thank you very much for that, Rob. Pleasure, I think you made some very good points. If England win it, it doesn't matter how they win it. Chris is allude to the fact when Portugal won the Euros, you know, I think won the two wins in the seven games. But nobody remembers how poorly they played. They won the tournament. If England win it, you're right. You're bang on, Jad. But if they don't win it, what an opportunity again has been missed. It's still been a success, Rob. Wow. Yeah. England getting to the semifinals is a success, Rob. Whether you like it or not. OK, so the goal is to win it, but it's still a success, and it proves that Gareth Southgate is a very, very competent manager. Jad, thank you so much for the call. You've got some good points, Jad. Liam, how are you? Yeah, good, thanks. How are you? You've listened to the callers. What do you think, Liam? You know what? I'm honest. A lot of stuff people have said, but I also disagree. I'm quite a young England fan, yeah. I'm 19. My first sort of World Cup that I can remember properly was a 2018 World Cup, right? People being slayed in Southgate for so long. I think a lot of it that he does, he gets right. Like, he gives him so many memories, he's got so many tournaments. You know, like, what was it? The World Cup, the cool final we got knocked out in. The rest has gotten quite far, like, past the 70s, but finally, right? I think some of his tactics are like... They need to be changed by the job, for what can I say. But I don't think Trippier should be playing on the left. It's like I've played brilliant when he goes. Palmer should be playing in my opinion. I think he's a player. He looks good, he gets involved. Luke's sure was good when he come on as well. He got involved quite a lot as he's been brilliant. And also, it could be mainly good as well, I think. So, I mean, he got some interesting opinions there. But in the main, Gareth's done a lot right, hasn't he? Change of tactics, change of system. People have said, well, Gareth's boring, Gareth's not adventurous, goes to a back three. Beats a really good Swiss team. And he has to take... Hang on a minute, who's in the semi-final? Hang on a minute, I'll just look at my wall chart. Sorry, hang on a minute. Just look at my wall chart, England in the semi. Yeah, they went through. They haven't played great football to beat Switzerland. What on penalties? This is international football. It's ain't club football. Teams are playing. Look at the Netherlands game earlier, they saw the best circuit. All the little teams are playing well. Georgia took the lead against Spain. The teams are fighting for their life. It's not... People aren't just playing and making silly mistakes. And all that's happening, people want it, they're on it. So we might just scrape it through. But Switzerland looked out Italy, and they're the reigning champions of the tournament. It's not an easy class, and then beat them after that, when they're going to be on the high. I'm beating Italy. Great point. It's not the Northern Premier League. Rob, thank you for the call. Come on, Mal, from Nottingham. How are you, Mal? I'm good, Robbie. How are you? Good. What do you think, Mal? Come on, what do you think, Mal? I'm with you, Robbie. You know, I think Gareth Southgate reminds me of my grandma and my granddad. And they passed away in the 1990s. I get more motivation from Bobby Robson than I do from Gareth Southgate. You know, it's like, it's like, is counseling kids. You know, they've gone on from the under-21s. They play for some of the best teams in the Premier League, with some of the best managers. These guys are talented. And Robbie, you know, you're letting Chris off the hook. He challenged you two weeks ago. He said, do you think anyone's going to win the cup? Do you? And you said, I left the audience. And I was listening, and I thought today, I'm going to ring in. And when I say to Chris Sutton, stop bullying Robbie. You know, stop knocking him all the time, because he's a tough, loving guy, and he lets you off the hook. Mal. Is it Mal or Mal? Mal. Mal. Chris. We've had some interesting calls over the years. But I mean, in the short space of time, I haven't heard many people talk as much rubbish as you have this evening. Oh, well, you know what, Chris? You get your own way all the time with Robbie, because you think you're a bit more articulate than Robbie. But Robbie is a genuinely nice guy, and he's down to work. He mixes with people. You're a bit aloof, you know, mate. You're getting a bit back. I'll be called in to give you a step one today. You had one of the worst analogies about Gareth Southgate. I don't know where you were going with that. And, you know, I don't know why you're being negative. I don't know where you're being negative about a guy who's got to the semi-final. England have got to a semi-final today, and you're coming on national radio and calling Gareth Southgate down. I am proud of our players and their dissemination Chris Sutton. I am proud of them. They are talented, they're gifted, they've got venom in them. You know, Alexander Arnold came on, and he was, I think he was more motivated by the sports psychologist than Gareth Southgate. How are you judging that? How are you judging that? Because you've all already talked about international level. We have sports psychology. You might have not had it when you were a Southampton or Blackburn mate, but there are sports psychologists now working. I'll never play to Southampton. That's like, no, no, no. You played for something. Sorry, I apologize. Did you play for Blackburn, then, in England? Yeah, one can. England. I was in England. Go on. Well, you were a good player, and you had something about you. You had passion. Gareth, you know, he's just, he's boring. Mal, Mal, listen, but Mal, what you can't, Mal. Just a quick one. Mal, just a quick one. Mal, just a quick one, though. What you can't underestimate, the final whistle, all the players, you know, the way they wear with their manager, you can see they've got a huge amount of respect for him. You can see they want to play for him. You can see it, and the way Gareth Southgate hugged every one of his staff, the players, the staff, the backroom staff, you can see there's a huge... The sport psychologist. And the sport psychologist, that's fine. And what I'm saying is these guys are performing on their own merit. A manager changes the environment. You know, pep injects life, cloth injects life. You know, we need the manager to transform and turn a doldrum into blazing fire sometimes, and that's what we need. Today was a team effort, not just Southgate. Everybody from the physio to the club level and everyone else. Today was about the entire team, not just Gareth Southgate. And if you said that, I would applaud you happily. But Mr Southgate is a bit boring. Come on, we are in the same as now. We need to invigorate, and we see we're going to see some fire. You know, we are the lions and king of the jungle. You know, we're not dolphins, we're not smiling and saying, "Hi, guys, we're here to entertain you." Dolphins can't talk. Sorry? Dolphins can't talk. Oh, they can't. They can find and mimic and smile. And they're smart. Actually, I made the wrong example. I apologize to the dolphins. I think I gave too much compliment to Gareth Southgate. But on the whole, the team is fantastic. From Pickford to Luke Shaw to every one of the players. Even Harry Kane when you tell over nearly over Gareth Southgate and Gareth Southgate gave him a hug. You know what, fantastic. Thank you. Thank you so much for the call. Very cool. Yeah, we've had a good hour tonight, Christopher. You've got to leave the stadium. Where are your necks, Christopher? Spain, France. It's in Munich. Wow. What an amazing call. Wow. Where have you been? Have you been in Berlin? Yeah. What have you been in Berlin? What have you been in Berlin? Five stars, Rob. Ooh, five stars. I'm going to go and chat to some dolphins. Now, more 606 on Five Live. ♪ And I don't want to be a negative on the night when everyone should be celebrating. But if you watch the games last night and you see the movement, the fluidity, the ambition of other teams, it is utterly ludicrous how poor we are playing. John, do you think England played really well today? I think the played well enough to subdue Switzerland to stop them winning. They didn't play particularly well. There's not particularly played well. There's two of them, but two more wins that are doing. I always get really frustrated because football isn't a beauty contest. It isn't about who plays the most beautiful football. It's not about the who plays the most attacking football, how many patterns there are and how many players play in possession and who moves off the ball and who doesn't. We weren't a great side in 66. But we got through the games and we won the Cup. What did the game do this game? What did he do? Where was the whole of the play? What are you going to do, John? I bet it's through. No, you can't chop a strike and that's called 40 Golds for five minutes. I wouldn't do that. We have to accommodate to him. I don't think that would have had the managerial activity to do that. I was in the pub watching it tonight, and everyone is heading their hands for our time. It is so boring for ourselves. That must be the most miserable pub in England. In England, if that's the case. You should go there, Chris and me. Chris, come on, you're better than that. This is BBC Radio 5 Life. A reminder that Chris and I will be back with 6 or 6 on Wednesday at 10.30pm. They have to England play their semi-final against the Dutch, but now joining me again until midnight. My old teammate and Republic of Ireland striker. Clinton Morrison, who has been part of our Euro's commerce team on five live. What did you make of that performance, mate? It was a better performance. I've been listening to you and Chris on the way here. It's been brilliant. It's been a brilliant first hour. But, yeah, mate, it was a better performance. He's not getting it right, but at the moment, they're winning football matches and they're progressing. They're in a semi-final. And I think England got a great chance of getting into the finals, so I know it hasn't been brilliant, but I know the fans are not happy with the performances, but it's all about results in these tournaments, so they're doing well at the moment. I think a lot of the callers have said that as well. Jed, who watched England in the 66 World Cup, said they didn't play great. They won it. You can see it. Portugal didn't play great and won the tournament. England haven't played great, but nobody will remember that. If they go on and win it, but if they don't win it, will people say it was good enough? Yeah, of course they'll say it weren't good enough, because by all accounts, this is the best squad England I've had for many years. So, yeah, as I said, the performances have been, like, nowhere near, good enough, but the results. And that's what we're in. When you get into a tournament like this, it's not like a Premier League where you're judged over 38 games. No, you're judged over this short little tournament, and they're getting results at the moment. So, yeah, as I said, France ain't played well yet, but they're in the semi-final. I don't think they've hit top four, and you look at someone like Mbappe. He's not too level at the moment, but that's somehow getting through. So, the signs are good for England at the moment, but I want to go to that pub anyway, that I was listening on the way down. That pub seems like it was great fun. It's 25, 909-690. If you're not pub, give us a call. Let's go to Pete. How are you, Pete? Yeah, I'm great. Thanks, Robbie. How are you guys? Yeah, we're good. Thanks, Pete. Come on, then, Pete. Is your glass half full then, semi-final? Not playing well, they can play it better, but he's doing the job? Exactly, half full, not half empty. On the Bristol, it was fans, so I'm not used to the greatest quality of football. But Gareth Southgate is the man in charge. He gets to make the decisions. I wholly disagree with a lot of the criticism that he's getting. Yeah, it's a little bit boring sometimes, a little bit negative. Maybe sometimes the substitutions come a bit late, but he's getting it through. He's getting us through. He's getting the job done. He's got us to a final, and now two semi-finals. And for people to be throwing beer over him, he's a man. He's a human. He's got feelings. What's wrong? That's wrong. I agree. I agree. Listen, Chris said it earlier. I totally agree with that, and I echo those doors. It's a collective. It used to Gareth Southgate's getting you through. I would say it's been two moments of absolute magic, one from Bellingham in the 95th minute. That saved you. And tonight, a moment of magic from Saka. So I would say I don't think Gareth Southgate's getting you through. I would say moments of individual brilliance and a collective as getting you through. Well, I do agree with you there. But you've got to admit that the substitution Saka made tonight made an immediate impact. Pete, you're right. It made an impact. But it was reactive, though. It was only when they went to go down. I looked at the Swiss manager. He made changes early because he could see there was tired legs. And I think the only negative I would say from Gareth about this evening was the timing of the substitutions. But at the end of the day, they did work. So, yeah, it's a difficult one, Pete. Because I look at the criticism he's getting, and I totally agree with what Savon Chris said. No one should be frying bottles at any manager because he's got England to another semi-final. So he's doing so well with this young group of players. But I just think, tactically, sometimes not good enough, Pete. And France, France, a minute, they shop for his style of play, which is pretty similar to what we've seen from our side. But they've won competitions under his management, and I think Gareth can do the same. Pete, thank you so much for the call. Do you want to click? Obviously, we don't see the media in other countries. We don't see the newspapers. We don't see the social media in other countries. You know, you play for the Republic of Ireland. You know, I don't think your managers, you know, got as much criticism. I play for Wales. I don't think our managers got as much criticism. Managing England is one of the hardest jobs in world football. I would suggest. It's not the hardest, sir, but I totally agree with you. He's under scrutiny, he's under pressure. One thing with Gareth, when he went in there, we always heard with the England squad, there was not a togetherness like players that would play for Man United or Man City Liverpool would sit on a different table. Now they look like there's a great togetherness in that squad. And you've got a credit, Gareth, that. And listen, you know what, so I said it the other day, if England go through without playing good football and go right through to the Euros or win, no one will be moaning at Gareth's house there. Everyone forget about Frank Bottles at him, because he's the manager who's brought success and glory back to the country. Oh, wait, wait, five, nine, nine, six, nine, three, Jeremy. What do you think? Ah, good evening, Robbie Flinten. Good evening. Good evening. OK, first thing, I think Gareth deserves huge credit for restoring pride in the English national team when it appeared to me from the outside as a football fan that clubs were much more important than your country. And I think he's done an amazing job. He's created what appears to me to be a new culture. And I have huge respect for that job he's done. My problem is throughout his career, and we've talked about this earlier, while I've been waiting, is he is reactive. He's always been reactive rather than proactive. I haven't checked these, but when I go back to the 2018 World Cup against Croatia, we were in control of the match. We scored early, very early, I think within the first ten minutes. And it was like he sat back and said, hold on to what we've got. And didn't go forward to go with the match. In the Euros, in '21, Manchini turned the tide with two substitutions soon after half time. I think within five minutes. And we scored early again, and we went into our shell. And after that, it wasn't until they'd equalized that he brought Sakurov. That was his first substitution, an attacking substitution. He started that match. I better stop now, because maybe we've got too many points, so they're in my mind. He started that match with Trippia Prey playing in front of Karl Walker. I don't know, I'm not sure if it's a three or four, but playing in front of Karl Walker was so two full backs on the right side to start the final. I'm a Tottenham fan. Pochettino, in my opinion, is a great coach. Great coach. In all my time at Tottenham, I'd never saw Tottenham. Remember, start one match with Trippia playing in front in the midfield, in front of Karl Walker. Never. Never know. You've never seen a winner either. No, I'm not going to say to my son. I'm not the final man. My first memories was crying when England got beaten by Germany after being tuned a lot. I think it was in 1970 against West Germany. Wow. Good, more luck. Wow. And Jordan Banks didn't play because there was a sickness at the camp, and he could benefit. He played. Good will have scored a hat trick, and then beat a 3-2. And I said to my boys walking out of the Euro, final in Euro 20, 21. I said 51 years of hurt, and it still goes on. I'm leaving next week with my boys. So, let me throw this to you, because I don't know Savmite of as well. I think I played where managers have managed me and they're defensive managers. Golf Southgate is a defender. I think he sets up this England team to be very defensive. No, that's what I'm saying to you. But that's not... He's a power manager. He wasn't a bad defender, because it's a play in a Premier League is hard in a national football mate. So, I'm telling you, I know what you're saying about Dawa. Dawa, Dawa is not... Dawa is not... So, Dawa is not saying... He was a very good defender, but he was a pure defender. Yeah. In the class of a Tony Adams or a... Tony Adams or a... Oh, wow. John Terry. Just a puppet defender. Okay, I'll give you that. I'll give you that. I'll give you that. Yeah, he's a good defender. I don't think he was there level, but I'll give you that. But I will give you that. But he threw the Euro... He threw the Euro final away. Yep. And he only reacted to bring on changes once it was 1-1. And a minute after it was 1-1, he brought Sacheron. Yeah. And he brought Mounton to replace Henderson. And so he reacted again. Then we go to the... But if he reacts... So, Jeremy, in the semi-final against the Netherlands, if they go 1-0 down, then he reacts and they get through on penalties. And then he reacts in the final and he wins it. Oh, I don't know what he's saying. It doesn't matter. Look, it doesn't matter to me. All I want to do is in my lifetime, and as I say when I take my boys to these matches, in my lifetime, I want to see football come home. And I don't care if we win power. I don't care. But what I look at now is we have a generation of young, attacking quality football players who should be getting on that pitch and he should say to me, "I think you should be saying to them, "Go out there. "Go and play football. "Have a good time. "Enjoy yourselves. "Be brave." And they haven't got... They've took penalties tonight. All those guys are the penalties. Did any of them have scars of getting knocked out to penalties that shoot out other than Sacher? No. Look, you're sportsman. I was involved in sports, but you're sportsman. Sometimes when you're younger, you're braver than when you get older. I don't know. Yeah, me. Yeah. But with the quality that we've got, just let move. OK. So obviously, not there. That's the way. The other thing that worried me from the moment he picked his squad was it took a big chance, I'm sure. I think you're in the Euros, might have been the player of the tournament for England in the Euros, 2020 Euros. It was outstanding. But big question mark. Big question mark, Jeremy. Thank you. Thank you so much for the call. 08085. Nana 969. Clinton, I think, watching them so far, they are going to be more defensively minded. They are going to be because the way, you know, Gareth Southgate is. But he's getting the job done. Listen, as a defender, it would be pretty natural, wouldn't it? Yeah. Clinton to be more defensively minded. Of course. But you've got to give him praise. He finds a way in tournaments to progress through it. You have to give him praise. Can he go the final step? Listen, we've not added, it's coming home yet. Jeremy Needy, give us one. Can he go all the way, do you think? I think this group of players can go all the way. At the moment, yeah, they would say they've rode their lot. They must be going to be a game where you're looking at yourself and they play to their potential because they've got so much good players there. I know Gareth wants to sit back and sometimes like today, I was surprised he didn't start Trent Alexander Arnold. Because if you're going to play free at the back and you're going to play a wing back, why not play Trent? Trent is the best passer in that England squad. So I was really surprised about that. But at the moment, I'd rather be lucky. But if you'd have played Trent, if you'd have played Trent now, Clinton, yeah, Sakim might not have been in that position to score the goal. There you go. So that's why I'm sat here and Gareth's doing a good job as a manager there. You know what I mean? We can all complete and have our moments. It's all about opinions, but he's doing the job at the moment and he's getting it done. I added in the same as you. So I'm not sure I'm going to be that good of a man. No, you're doing well. You're doing well, you're doing well. Three, card, how are you? Hello, Colin. Hello, Robbie, how are you doing? You OK? Yeah, we're good. We're good. Thank you, Colin. Come on in. What do you make of that performance? I was absolutely in a bizmo-- a bizmo mate. It was really, really awful. Five games, not just this one. Five games. And England are still the worst team in the tournament. And they're in a semi-final outfit. I don't know if that's a damning indictment of the Euros at the moment. That team is so negative. It's so awful to watch. We still don't know what style they play. To me, it just looks like a long ball kicking Hoofy. It's like watching football from 1970s. Colin, let me interrupt you. You want me? Yeah, but Colin, one minute, one minute. The European-- excuse me. Have the European teams fallen off that much? That England have made a semi-final. And they still haven't played in the performance. Not even a half, not even 15 minutes. Where we turned around and said, wow, that was good. OK, all right. All right, mate. I understand your point, Colin. I understand. But this call looks like England. England knocked out, because that's not a call I've got. It's a negative call. It's not a positive one. It doesn't matter about playing decent football in a competition. This is not a '38 game of season thing. It's a tournament football. This is what always happens to England, right? Yeah. They scramble over the line to the nobodies of European football. And as soon as they come up against a classy, bigger team, they're kicked out, and they're coming home on the plane. So you don't think there'll be any different this time man? Do you not think there'll be any Netherlands? And let me tell you something, you've also said that. I think there might be Netherlands with their turgid feedback and 445 men behind the ball football. I think they might just do it. But they won't. If they come against Spain and France, they're done for, just like normal. Normal service over the year must have happened in the final. And you know what, I think... No, let me speak now. Let me speak, because I'll let you have a speak now. All right, let me speak. You said they don't produce technical footballers. Well, I can name people like... Well, feel forward in this. You're not technical. As a not technical, I could go on, you know. The list could go well, and I'm not technical. And you're saying to me... It's not a world-class player. Oh, my God. Are you being serious? He got player this season at Real Madrid. He can't be that bad. He can't be that bad. He did the first half of the season. He scored 18, and he scored four after that. I don't care. He's at Real Madrid. I don't care. He's won the Champions League. The performance has completely fallen off. It doesn't matter if you just said it, who carries him then? He just got player this season. I watched Spanish football. I watched more football than you. So I'll go talk to Tony. Yeah, I've heard of Tony Cruz and Roger. But let me tell you something. Let me tell you something. Roger spent most of the season on the bench. You don't watch football. Tony Cruz's doing that, he did. And he played with two in many. Oh, Camabingo came in there. So you're not watching that much. Roger, Camabingo. No, he played a lot of the bench football. You're right, but Cam Cruz played most games. And he just came up to mention that. That's what I said. He came up. Yeah, he did, but you can't say better than his rubbish. They were winning trophies anyway. They were exactly like, no, winning just off. He didn't give him something that they didn't do. You know, Bellum went around with it. No, he went around with it. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. No, no, he said it. Let me just say this. He went to... What have Bellingham done in this tournament? I saved England with the over a kick. What you watching? They're out. They're out. But they're out. If he don't score that over a kick, they are out. And he's probably the only player in the team. What about his performances? What about the stuff that's going to eat it? Yeah, his performances haven't been good. He just puts the glass on it to what he has. Has he been rubbish in the last five games? No, he hasn't been to his potentials. Who's England's top scorer? Has he been anywhere decent? Who's England's top scorer this tournament? I think he's Shane and Bellingham. No, Bellingham, right? Where do you go? So your arguments are not good things. Two rolls in five games. No performance, mate. Are you all meant to be an ex football player? Yeah, I'm being an ex football player. I have been an ex football player, and I know how difficult it is. And he's at the hard season at Real Madrid. But if he doesn't score that goal, the over a kick goal, you're Englander out, you know what I mean? So it's one of those things anyway, but... Yeah, I don't think you know you're a Spanish football player. No, I don't think you know you're a Spanish football player. Six, nine, three... How are you, David? I need a break now. How are you, David? Oh, yes, am I on? You're on? Oh, you are on, David. Do you want to go toe-to-toe with Clinton? Don't go toe-to-toe with Clinton tonight? No, I'm sweating, David. I'll say what I have to say. And hopefully, the meaning will resonate throughout the world when I say this. What I want to say is, what I think people fail to understand is, for last Euro final, where we looked at Ili on penalties, I think a lot of the nation have had a lot of expectations to go one step further. But I don't think what a lot of people realise is the players we now do not have, Sterling, Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Harry Maguire. These world-class experienced players in their own right. We don't have them anymore, OK? Understand that. And we have had to readjust to get the appropriate replacements from wherever they've come from, from whatever method they've needed to qualify to get into the England team. So what Gavin Southgate has done, and I hope everybody understands, is if we had to readjust the squad to get a best fit so they don't lose. And I suppose the most important thing is they don't lose, and they haven't lost at the end of the day. Yes, they scrape through. Yes, the performances have been below par. He doesn't deserve cups being found in him. He deserves praise because he's managed to adjust. The side, so he can get the results to qualify for the next round. Now, he's qualified for the group with one win, OK? And two draws, I believe. And we're now in the semi-finals, job done. And I agree with what someone said earlier. It's not about performances, it's about the results. We got the results tonight. Tonight, we were the best penalty-takers. Switzerland won. In the final, we weren't the best penalty-takers against Italy. We've learnt from that. South Gates learnt from that, from Euro 96 onwards, OK? And he's transmitted back to the team. He's transmitted back to Saka, who's learned. And God bless his soul. He's scored tonight, a brilliant go on his penalty. We all scored five goals. OK, some might say, we are the best penalty-takers of the night. Well, that's great, good, because we need resilience. We need mental strength, because that's what makes you a winner. Yeah? France did worse than us last night. Almost fell asleep during the France game. But they were the best penalty-takers as well. They won. They showed resilience. And that's what it takes to win. And that's what I'm trying to say tonight. And I hope everyone understands that. Just give down a South Gates break, please. All right? When you say about the world-class players, who were the four world-class players, you mentioned? Harry Maguire, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, and Jordan Henderson. If anyone disagree with me with that, it's so-- Well, I wouldn't say that. I wouldn't say that. I wouldn't say that all the world-class players. OK, they've had their moments at their clubs, where they've also had their moments with England, where they're putting world-class performances every now and again. OK, maybe not consistently, possibly like Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham. But they've had their moments. But now they've faded for whatever reason, but because they've not hit form, they've not qualified for the first team of their club. But they made a difference. You're very different, probably. David, you're very positive, which are lots of listeners. If you were not pub, you'd be in the 97% in the way of miserable, because you're very positive, David. Do you think England is going to win it then, David? Sorry, can you say that again, please? Do you think England is going to win it? England is going to win it. Yes, yes I do. I think they're building towards something really special here. And I think Gareth's say of Southgate will have another plan, especially for the Netherlands. They've got a few days to think about it. Whether you make changes or not, I don't know. But he's shown that if substitutions have worked, they could happen a little bit sooner, because I don't worry sometimes that they might not be warm enough to be up to the task, but so far, so good. You know, it may be continue with that, but, you know... David, good positivity, David. Good positivity, David. Finally, 085, 996, 993. Andrew, get you in before the news. How are you, Andrew? Great, thank you, Robbie. Good evening, boys, you OK? Evening, Andrew. Good evening, Andrew. Good to see you. Thank you, the semi-finals, isn't it? I came and greeted just a back at Gareth Southgate. I mean, it's very easy us from the armchair to make... ..to criticize, but he's the one on the touch side who's going to make those important decisions. And I think, as much as I would disagree, I mean, I'd have probably taken Kane off before he scored that. So, winning goal in the round of 16. So, he's going to make those decisions. And at the moment, he's getting them right. And I think his history of going to three semi-finals out of four tournaments. I mean, I go back a long way, and that's something we never really saw to be honest on my day. These smaller teams, I'd say smaller teams, Georgia, et cetera. They're all so well-organized these days, aren't they? And it's fine margins, and at the moment, we're getting through it. We're getting through it, and then if the right is there, that's good. You know what, Andrew, there's good points you make. Sav, it's a question I'll ask you, because I know you're going into management, and there is a lot of pressure. Do you lean a lot on your assistant when you're doing it? Because you have to make big calls, don't you, as a manager? Well, listen, I think, yeah, I've not been in that situation yet, but, you know, I'm trying to get a team around me that I can rely on, and it's a management team. I think that is the big thing. Listen, you're there, you're the one who has to make the final decision, but you have to, you know, get all the information, all the analysis from your team, and make a collective decision. But you are the one who has to stand there and make that change, and if it goes wrong, or goes right, it's on you. But you can, yeah, so I've not been in that situation yet, Clinton, but I should go one day, mate, that's for sure. Yeah, I'm sure that when you make that decision, you look at that. Yeah, you look at that. I mean, we all thought the big room we're pulling out was playing five at the back. We'd all assume you then. I mean, I was thinking, trying to tell an example of the right sacker on the left, that's what we thought, that's what we thought. And it scores the goal from the right, so who's made the right decision? It's a very, very difficult thing to do, and at the moment, he's getting the right, I think it's crossed, he keeps getting the right. Well done, well said. Thank you. Oh, eight, eight, five, nine, nine, six, nine, three. I want some more feisty colors for you, Clinton. Yeah, yeah, you can't win straight out of there. Do you know your Spanish football? Yeah, I watch it with a table, so I don't relax. I'm actually eight, eight, eight, five, nine, oh nine, six, nine, three. If you want to work smarter, you need a system with smart built-in. And they lead by two goals to one. Really looking forward to that game on Wednesday night. Clinton, England taking on the Netherlands. It's going to be an intriguing battle. Do you think it might suit England with the Netherlands with an attack in play? If they go on to England, gaps will open up. Do you think England would rather play against a more expansive team or a team that plays a little buck? Yeah, I'd say a more expansive team. Then I think he can get some of the, you know, the like the wide players more involved. But it depends what guys does. Will he go to the free at the back? I know he went to free today and it worked because he kind of matched up what Switzerland done. But will he go back to the fall? Because he'll have Mark gay and he back. And will he play that partnership with Jon Stones? But the Netherlands have some good attack in play. So, this will be a, this is a hard game. This is a 50-50. I heard Chris struggling to answer earlier who could win this. And it is a difficult one. Because they've got some good attack in players as well. And there's a lot of players that play in the Premier League as well as there will be lots of good battles all over that pitch. You mentioned Gareth Southgate looking who's taken a lot of criticism over the last few weeks, but yet aside that into the third semi-final in a major tournament earlier, the England manager spoke with Jon Murray. Talk about dealing with a penalty shoot out. You can't do much better than that, can you? Score all the penalty. I mean, as you say, there were stories all over it. Let me just ask you Bukayo Saka, you know, because of the history. And I know he's a different player since then. But was he someone that you had to talk to about the possibility? No. No, we have total trust in him. He, you know, firstly, his all-round performance was phenomenal for the team. You know, he had such a complicated defensive job to do as well as what he gave us with the ball and the goal he scored. And then, you know, to show the fortitude to convert the penalty as he did. I mean, I love them all, but I had to give him an extra big hug on the pitch. There's no doubt about that. Yeah, a very different one to the hook that you gave him at Wembley. Yeah, yeah. But look, these, you know, I know myself, these experiences shape you. He's come back from that stronger, more resilient, still loved by, you know, he was our player of the year, the following season. And, you know, tonight, his tournament ignited a little bit as well. In Ivan Taney, how does he do that? Yeah, well, I mean, there's Ivan, there's Cole. I mean, you almost dismissed Jude, which is wrong. But then Trent, who, you know, could have felt his tournament was done. But we know he's an exceptional penalty taker. And with real nerve and, you know, all of those guys showed under the most extreme pressure what we want to. And just a final one, you know, spoke to you after, you know, when you were on the pitch and you went on your own and got the reception that you did from the England supporters in the group, that must have been very different. And, you know, there seemed to be quite a lot of feeling in the way that you were reacting. Yeah, look, I took this job to try to improve English football, to try to give us nights like this. I can't deny them when things get as personal as it has. That does hurt. I don't think it's normal to be a thrown at you. But we're in a third semi-final in four tournaments, and I think we continue to give people fantastic memories. So we'll keep grinding, we'll keep fighting, and we'll keep enjoying this journey. Yeah. So you and Dortmund are still here? Thank you. Yeah. I think Gareth speaks so well in there, because what he's given in the last so many tournaments is England fans all over the country, an excitement, and, you know, proud to be English, because they have, whatever people say, the style of football, they've done really well. And he's given people pride back at that England shirt, you know, everybody in the pubs around the country tonight, you've seen in fan parks, what it means, England fans, and Gareth Southgate has achieved a lot. Yeah. And he's been under massive pressure, because as I said, the style of football, not everyone likes it. So it's all about winning, and that's what football's about. It's about winning. You come off the pitch, and winners, and that's what he's doing at the moment. As you say, the job he's done at England, for me, it's been fantastic. As I said, sometimes the football's not been the best, and these decision-makers haven't been the best, but he's winning football matches. And that's all you can judge Gareth for at the moment. As I said, fans have their opinions, but the one thing I would never do, and what fans shouldn't do, is throw bottles out of manager. I think it's a disgrace. And that's the one thing, the ones who have done that have let themselves down, but the rest of the fans have been- He was plastic. Plastic. Yeah. Plastic. Yeah. Yeah, beers and stuff like that's about me, cops and that. You can't do that, and that's bang out of order. So, but as I said, he's big enough, he's brave enough. The way he comes out and speaks, I think he's fantastic, and a lot of people can learn from him. Away to it. Five, nine, nine, six, nine, three, John, you're in Salford. Hi, guys. What? I mean... Gareth, where does he go after the England job? No, where? He'll never get another job. He won't get a Premier League job, he'll never get a Champions League job. I just don't rate the guy, and when he will suffer, I ain't going to van you made it. I will learn to walk away from me. Football club? I think, no, I'm not having him. John, John, if it's... No, I don't like it. John, if Gareth wins the Euros of England, he will get a job. I think, if he leaves England, he will get a job in the Premier League. He can give him a job. He will. He will. He will. Why would he... Why would he not get one, John? No. After winning the Euros? Why would he not go? Why would he... Did he jump? No. Was Phil jump? No. Evan jump? No. Where's he going to get a job? Barbers. Is that his level? He's so negative. To be... To be honest, I think he watched a game, I've watched about half an hour of it. He's not a big one game that I've been played, and he already turned in because it was on penalties. I thought, yeah, I'd probably go out. But we've been so negative, and I think, hey, let's look at him. He's not fit. He is not fit. John, do you... Oh, yeah, excuse me. John, do you... Do you not... John, he'd do a better job than... He'd do a better job than Ted Hargwood, that man United, I think. The style of football is the same, you know? I know. It's the same. The style of football is the same. You have that. What planet are you on? What planet are you on? It's the same note. What planet are you on? Did you play... All right, so you know what? You've had a good season because you won the FA Cup. Other than that, your football... You don't see some people... No, it was nowhere near good enough. Your football was no... All right, so I've got... That's what we said though, me and Sam said, if he wins the European Championship, which is bigger than the FA Cup, surely he'll get another job. Do you not want them to win it? Yeah, go on, man. We're not gonna win it. We are not gonna win it. I think it's the worst thing we've seen in the tournament, that's still in it. France and England, the best team in the competition, which, yeah, I believe in Spain, and we can not compete against Spain without manager, so do you think he's good enough to be money on it? I didn't say he was good enough to be money on it, fans. I mean, manager, I said, could he do a better job than ten hog? That's what I said. I didn't say he was good enough. No, no. But if he wins the Euros, John, John, irrespective of the style of football, if he wins the Euros with England... Yeah, if, if, if, if, if... Why are you saying he's gonna win it? Well, he's got a good chance, he's got a great chance. He's got a good chance. We'll drop one in here, I bet, drop one in to pound better, we don't win it. No, I don't. But this team was a penalty... Listen, he didn't win the Euros against... He was a penalty win, a penalty kick away for winning the last Euros against the Euro. He's Italy, but he didn't win it to Euro. Yeah, but he didn't. You're right. But it's got a great chance. We're getting through games. Robert, we're getting through games despite the manager, not with the manager, despite the manager. He's brought up, he's brought the guy from Crystal Palace, he's had a great season. Is that a one minute on the pitch? Water. Yeah, yeah. Why, why bringing? Why bringing? Yeah, man. But as you say, he's getting a third within the team, but it's not even at a game. I agree with you, John. But, Rubble told you, at tournament football, it's so difficult to bring a young player like that. He's got an experience. I agree with you. I think he should be on because I've seen a lot of him being ex-pilot, and I think he's a fantastic footballer. He's a top-ton player, so I do agree with you, but sometimes in these big crucial games, and I know, look, young men who's coming in there, and he's been fantastic, I agree with you. I've watched him in the two games and I think he's great. I don't know. I don't get the criticism with him. I thought he was very good today as well. Yeah. I'll leave you on that one, though. John, don't you? I mean, look, he's not a game, he's not a game, he's just crazy. Why Jacob, you're not even going to give him a game. So John, if England win it, obviously you don't think they will, if they win it, you'll ring back, John, won't you? I will. Right, Rubble. I will ring back, if we win it. Well, I think, on Wednesday, we're going out. Okay, we'll ring back Wednesday, John. I look forward to it. John, look, ring back on Wednesday. Thank you so much for the call. John, Vinnie, you're in MERS, you said, "How are you, Vinnie?" Well, hello, Robbie, and thank you for taking my call. My pleasure. I noticed when people talk about football, they get very irate, so do you think we could just have a sensible discussion about it? Yeah, Chris has gotten out, so I'll show you what we find. Well, look, you see, I think, Robbie, that Gareth's done a good job, but he is a captain insensible, and I think the problem is that, in life, there are artistic players, obviously players like Georgie Best, the Maradona, and then there's more clinical players like Bobby Moore and Beckham Baria, and they make up a team, don't they? Yeah. Now, what I think we need in our country is winning with an inspiration to the young, and it's very easy to win by not being inspirational, and I think that's where people get very excited, so the last call has said, "We're not going to win it." Well, we might not, we might, but there is a difference between winning with inspiration and winning without inspiration. When I was 10, I watched the Azteca Stadium Brazil play. I can still remember nearly every move, as a kid, I watched George Best play, phenomenal. Look at the world of tennis and compare it. You see Macamroll, inspirational speaker, inspirational player, and then you see other players who are very plain. Now, if I just shout at you and you shout back at me, which seems to happen on your program tonight, we don't get anywhere. You wish Gareth well, nobody should throw beer at him or bottles, he's doing his best. One point I would make is, some guy came on and said, "There are four world-class players," and we had Harry, Harry Maguire, et cetera, make a distinction between a player who can have a world-class moment and a world-class player. And I don't think people think into what they're saying enough. So, all I'm saying is, we're wishing them well, we don't want to be negative, but I don't think you're going to inspire people with its uninspiring play, whoever that is, whether it's Germany, Holland, France, or Tristan D'Acuna, you know, whoever it is. And all we're crying out for. Yeah, but you will. But you don't inspire them. So, the youngster, you mentioned the youth. If England win the Euros, no matter how they win it, the youth, they'll be inspired by Jude Bellingham, they'll be inspired by Phil Faughton, they'll be inspired by a great say, they'll be inspired by a good defender, they will be, they will be. You're not telling me now, you're not telling me now, the youth are inspired by Jude Bellingham, they'll be inspired by soccer, they'll be inspired, and I'm not sure if they win it, if they win it, they'll be inspired, no, they won't be. Clint, what do you think? No, I agree with you, Sam. So, what about the over and kit from Bellingham, where the kids are inspired by that? From my career, there's a flash of brilliance, fantastic. So, would that not inspire kids to do that on a big stage? Yeah, but what I'm trying to get is, that is an inspirational moment, and I agree with you. All right? Well done, Mr Bellingham for keeping his in the tournament, brilliant. But what I'm talking about is a generation of players. Listen, you know what should happen in England? You should say no points for a nail, no growth, everybody then must have an attacking mindset. Nobody did that. Yeah, but what happens to defenders then? What happens about, you mentioned Bobby Moore, you have great defenders, you know, what's inspirational, defending, you look at tonight, look at the Netherlands tonight, throwing themselves in front of the shots, that's inspirational for those Dutch fans. Well, like you rightly said, Robbie, we don't shout at each other, but you see, if you've got an attacking bang, your defenders get better, don't they? Oh, listen, listen, you made some very interesting points, Vinnie, thank you so much for the call. Chris, you're in Loughborough. Yeah. Hi, Robbie. Hi, everybody. Hello, gentlemen. I've just got to say, I'm a product of a generation of the 80s, seen Brian Robson score a goal against Spain in the H2 World Cup. To be fair, to be fair, Clinton is as well with the gear he's got on tonight. Yeah. Two-teach boys. Chris, don't listen to Rob. He's always been like this for ages. We didn't come here for the last 10 minutes talking, but I'm going to let you have your say. Thank you, sir. The thing is, when I got to my teenage years, well, we went through the horror of German penalty shootouts, you know, twice within the space of six years from 1919. And then we went through it again and again and again at various different tournaments. In the saving grace for our England at the moment, this England team is how well they dispatch those penalties tonight, all five of them. They couldn't get better than that. SACO, I would have meant respect for, after what happened with Italy and, you know, that penalty shootout and to get a little smile on his face afterwards, it was like, yeah, you've laid a demon or two to rescue it. Well done. But they were all brilliant penalties, and if it comes, if we're going to do it the hard way, because obviously the Netherlands are going to be difficult, there's no two ways about it. The way they came back tonight was brilliant against, you know, the Turkish. And then the Turkish through the kitchen sink at them. And one of the saves to the Dutch keeper make was amazing right near the end to keep them ahead. So it's going to be a tough game, but if it comes to the crunch and if we do beat the Dutch and we have to go to penalties, I've got a face at last in my England team. If it comes to penalty shootout, they've all got confidence now. Every one of them scored tonight, and I know the performance is, yeah, they've not been very good at all at times, and I'm being polite. But to see that they've done it, I agree with everybody who's just been saying you can only beat and be lucky and get away, it's taught in a football. And the guy who said early, no one will remember how we played it if we do win it, nobody's going to watch that. And I think our Southgate does deserve, you know, three semi-final stages, he's going to deserve that recognition, but it's like, you know, it's the old store, that old saying about winning isn't the only thing, winning isn't the only thing, it's the only thing. Yeah. Chris, you know what? Chris, you make some really, really good points, and I agree with you about the penalties because I look at everyone. And you know, the one that stands out for me is the one you said, Saka, because I think that takes great love. So the stick that he got, when he rolled in, that was the most nervous I was, and I just wanted him to put it in the back of the net, and he cupped his ears and he thoroughly deserved it because he was outstanding, he brought England back into it, but it's some great penalty takers. Cole Palmer, he went first. I think you got to have your best penalty taker, he's so confident, Ivan Tony, he doesn't even look. What a penalty. South, I know you took, let me tell you something, South took penalties, he'll tell you how pressure I played with him, and he took very, really good penalties. So he was good at that, that's for sure, he was really good at penalties. Oh yeah, good at that, nothing else. No, he was good at other stuff, but one thing, no, he was very good at that, but one thing I say with Tony, that is nerves of steel, because he doesn't, he doesn't even look at the ball, I don't understand how he does it, so you're right, they can afford even to take off Harry Kane, and obviously bring on someone like Tony, and really, it does improve them in terms of taking penalties, so I think England have a great chance, I agree with you. Yeah, thank you so much for the call, Chris, right, let's go to Tom, how are you, Tom? I'm good, thanks, how are you, boys? Yeah, we're good, thanks, Tom. Very good, I just wanted everyone to just chill out a minute, let's just take a step back with a semi-final, which is fine, if you'd offered everyone a semi-final at the start of the time you go with the defence, missing key players, with all the issues at left back and whatever, yeah, we'll take that, that's fine, and everyone's going to just realise a second, and I don't like the argument, oh, the professional footballers, they should be able to do everything, feel fine and play, feel fine and play with effectively the best, arguably the world, the world's best, defensive and fielder, not named, not named and go, I can't name, Rodry, Manchester City, Birmingham plays with the flippin' Avengers, Roundwood Reds, when they've got vanishes shooting on one side, Tony Cruz, Camabinga, and the rest of them all over the place, Harry Kane scores 41 goals in Bayern Munich, England, don't play in exactly the same way that all these individuals at their club play, the style that City play isn't played at an international level by England, because we don't have the players to do that, the style that Bayern Munich play isn't the same, you cannot, it's the same across the board for everybody, I know some people will go, ah, but there is the professional footballers, they should be able to do it, actually, they don't train exactly, it's not the same, you have, you know what, Tom, in a season, yeah, it goes on. You make good points, but did you not think in today's game, because when I watched England before, the intensity was down, but today, in the first half in particular, I think they went and pressed Switzerland, and I think, I can understand what you're saying at club level, where different style of play, but intensity and football, and Rob will tell you on hard work is some of the things I wasn't saying with these England players to go and press the ball, but in the first half today, I saw it massively, do you agree? I think that's, I think, I agree, and I think you get in the reaction from, erm, the previous round, from the previous game, and I think that's the reaction from getting through there, and they're still on that high from that, and then as time goes on, anything else drops, Switzerland adapts, and then, you see, sort of, like, the, the, the, it goes in circle tactically, if that makes sense. Do the biggest thing in that formation, that formation, you know, because I've been, funnily enough, working on a formation today, from, from my team, completely different, but in that formation of the three, four, two, one, it's important that if Harry Kane goes, one of the two 10s, it was Bellingham and Fordham, they've got to go out to the foreback, and they've got to try and show them one way, and what was noticeable in that formation, they've worked on it, Clint and Tom, because it's important, if somebody vacates their position, it's filled by somebody else, if you notice lots of times, if Kane dropped in, Bellingham or Fordham were in the nine position, if Walker was out of position, Bryce would go there, so it was, it was intriguing to watch the system I quite like, so I thought they've worked on it, it worked very well, and the press, as Clinton has alluded to, was right, you can't press all the time, you've got to go, listen, I love pressing football, Clinton will tell you, I used to scream, I'd see Clinton go, and then I'd be straight behind him, and everybody would come up, and, you know, that's the way I'd like to play, and I think everybody's been crying out for England to press, and I think that system today allowed them to press. And the other thing is also like managing expectations as well, again, like set by the code, like, everyone thinks England can go on and win it a little bit, if someone offered you semi-finals at the start of the tournament, you're going to take it, yeah, that would be a good tournament. Yeah, it would, Tom, they would listen, you made some very good points, Tom, thank you so much, just before we go to bed in Alaska, Auckland, listen, talking about pressing, you knew, I'd see you go when we were burning it together, you'd go, and then I'd be straight behind you, and you know that you can't go on your own, can you, but you knew, you know, because we worked on it, that if you were going, I'd go, Paul Devlin would go, the other people would be right behind you, but you knew you could do that. No, the one thing I'd always say is, and a lot of people say with you, you had much more than that though, but the one thing you would do, if I went, you'd definitely go, and if you started it off, you'd get the whole team up there, and it was good, it's infectious, so that's why you need players like you in the team, so I'll always back you on that, mate, 100%. Thank you, Cleen. Ben, how are you? Your gear's all right. Ben, how are you? Hi, how's it going? All right, thanks, Ben. Yeah, I just think I'm a bit more similar to Tom, I'm just thinking, you know, we're in the semis now, from here on in, it's existing in the vacuum, this is tournament football, and from here on in, it's such small margins that, you know, we've got to the semis, that's a big result in itself, and I think the Southgate maybe deserves a bit more respect. Let's not forget, he's won more knockout games than any other England manager, I think it's 50-plus years, and actually this tournament, he showed quite a bit of courage, you know, we will speak about the back five change today, you know, yes, everyone wanted a system change, but it actually takes quite a lot of courage to do that in a knockout game, because if that backfired, he's got egg on his face, and similarly, you know, people have been saying the last six years or so, you know, he's got his favourite, blah, blah, blah, blah. This year, he's completely discarded his favourite, he's actually gone with, you know, what the public wanted, rightly or wrongly, I don't mean, I've not heard many complaints about this quarter at all, you know, he's ditch Greedish, Rashford, Henderson, et cetera, so players like, you know, Bowen, who aren't even going to get on the pitch, so I just think, let's take a moment, we're here now, this is where we are, it's tournament football, you know, come on England. You make some good points, Ben, but you say about the public wanted, you know, the players, you know, and this is Gareth Southgate, listen, he would have had his own mind, he'd have picked the players, the public wanted a change of formation, the public wanted a press, Gareth Southgate, it's done that, I think he was in a no-lose situation, if he'd have kept the same system, you know, and he'd have lost, people said, why didn't you change it, you know, so he has changed it, and it was the right formation, because everybody's been crying out for the public to play Ford and Embarragon when they're right for positions. Yeah, but equally, it's something to say, it's sacral positions, it's not just, you know, it's a bit of give and take, and yeah, it's a win-win, but it's not really a win-win because if we go out, he's getting slaughtered, losing his job, and his legacy is in patterns, he could have stuck with his guns, obviously we knew that wasn't working, but it's still brave. Ben, thank you so much for the call, Clinton, magnificent to my listen, I'm sure you and Carner are friends, but do you watch Spanish football, OAOA5, now the 969th of these numbers to call, when me and Chris are we back with 6 or 6 on Wednesday 10/30 after England's semi-final against the Netherlands, next up on 5 live, it's a chance to hear Ellis James and John Robin, 6 or 6, is a shooting shot production for BBC Radio 5, I really enjoyed it, Clinton, well done, mate, see you soon.
