In spirituality there can be talk about killing the ego, which sounds both dramatic and risky. Besides, if the personal self is trying to attain something for itself, such as enlightenment, why would it try to do away with that which would presumably benefit from spiritual awakening. Perhaps we can see that ego has no real desire to off itself. But what if ego is nothing more than a concept about oneself? And an illusory concept at that. We don’t have to kill an illusion; we only need to see that it is not true.
