Loving Oneself

To talk about love of oneself is an odd thing: are there really two selves in there? The one that is trying to be loving and the other that is trying to be worthy of that love. It seems entirely reasonable to wish oneself well, so why is self love even a matter for discussion? And does it have any relevance to self-realization?
