In everyday life, many imagine that the hoped-for, fully satisfying payoff lies in the future. We may have experienced pleasures, accomplishments, and good relationships, but there always seems to be a sense of “Yes, but there must be something more.” We tend to bring this same pattern to our spiritual journey: seeking the next spiritual experience, more often, and better than the last one. In both cases, ultimate fulfillment always appears to lie in the future. But life happens now.
