Hello, and welcome to SEO101 on webmasterradio.fm. This is Ross Dunn, CEO of Step 4th Web Marketing. And my co-host is John Carcutt, the SEO manager for MediaWeds. Hey, man, how's it going? It's doing awesome, man. I've been, I've been, like, pining for this. I want to hear the second half of this stuff about SMX West. Ah, yes, yes, yes. I am the keeper of all information. Yes, yes. I'm really bummed I didn't get to go. I was like, so you're my only, well, not my only, but my true source of whatever it is. Yes, whatever it is. Record these on Fridays, everyone. So, just give us a break. So, in this case, we're just going to continue on from our last show. One of the things that I wanted to touch on, I forgot to mention about domains for Fire and Planning. The reason that was brought up was it was all talking about considerations for a website. You know, URLs getting indexing, that kind of thing, essentially indexing. And one thing that was very cool, and I'd seen it before, frankly, I hadn't put a lot of weight on it, was the URL parameter handling tool. Ooh, sounds cool. Yes. I love that tool. It's one of my favorite ones in there. It is cool. Oh, yeah. Quickly. The general settings of your Google Webmaster Tools profile. And using the URL parameter handling tool, you can actually go in and it will tell you, and it will tell you what it's finding when it's indexed to your site, different parameters. And you can go in there and actually block them and say, like, this is a parameter I want you to ignore. And you can actually add new ones in, too. They don't have to find it. You can say, hey, this parameter is going to be on my site. You can put them in prior to actually implementing on your site. So you know, from day one, they're not going to get indexed. Which is awesome. The reason that's such a cool thing is it can dramatically, let's see if I can quote here. I love having all this stuff here. Anyways, it would actually, it'll cut back on a lot of stuff. A lot of the duplicate content you might have in the search engine and speed up, frankly, the indexing of your site. Yeah, I wish they would have had this like six years ago. I was actually working maybe longer now, but I was working in-house at a real estate data provider. And we had a big affiliate program. And when I first came in as the in-house SEO at this place, one of the biggest issues I had to deal with immediately was the way the affiliates were sending traffic was making it so that the affiliates were being indexed instead of our site. So it would be the affiliate ID for the homepage. It'd be like homepage.com/landingpage1. And then it would be attached with affiliate ID in the search results. So even organic traffic that we were getting on these terms of the site, we were having to pay out to the affiliates because it was indexing with their IDs in it. And if we could have just used this tool to eliminate that parameter so it wouldn't be indexed, it would have saved me like probably 100 hours of work. You know, it's supposed to eliminate a lot of the duplicate content. I think the example they used was when they first indexed this one site, they noted 1.5 million pages. And then in this sample site they were talking about. And when they implemented or they set up the URL parameter handling, they cut it down to 450,000. That was how much duplication there was. That's a third of what it was. That's great. Yeah, exactly. So it makes sense. But doesn't the canonical tag do the same thing a lot of ways? That's a very good question. And I've actually, they've always said that the canonical tag is a suggestion. And I've actually recently had an experience where, yes, it was a suggestion and it did not work for us. And we lost a major search term for a couple of weeks because it was indexing a version of the URL with a parameter, even though that the page with the parameter had the canonical tag on it. So we lost probably two weeks worth of high volume traffic because the canonical tag decided it didn't want to work. Now, I'm just going there now. So you don't have it on this particular profile. I was going to quote it. But it does say that also for URL parameter. This is only a suggestion. Oh, see, oh, there you go. And my theory behind it was the tag that we got was a referral from a traffic purchase. Or not like a link by, but it was like an actual traffic purchase. So they were tracked. They needed to track the traffic that came into sight so they could show ROI for their partner traffic buy. And it was from CNN.com. And my thought was, OK, CNN is a super high authority site that might, if there's enough links coming from that with that parameter attached, they might assume, OK, well, this is the authority site is going to override this canonical tag. Because that's the only time I ever say to do that. And it was from extremely high authority sites. And I think I wish I could remember what it was. But Matt cuts to give an example of why they sometimes ignore things. I think it was a canonical example. And it makes sense. I mean, I guess they're just covering their butt saying, look, even if you tell us to do this, there's going to be circumstances where we can't listen. Fair enough. Oh, I know what it was. It was he made an example of someone doing it incorrectly. And he wouldn't say the site, but one big, big site he said made a massive mistake. And they luckily ignored what they put in. So it's kind of like basic SEO business practices. You're not going to give a guarantee to a client. Google's not going to guarantee that's going to work in every circumstance because there's going to be anomalies. OK, so let's see what we've got next here. Oh, yeah, I couldn't help but ask this. I'm just-- I love the Google applications, Google Docs, all these things. I use it quite religiously because it makes things a little easier for me. I can be anyone's computer and still work if I need to. One thing that irritates the hell I mean is there's no tasks. All right, they do. It's just that stupid plug-in that works in Gmail. It's horrible. Well, I asked Peter Norweg. He's like one of the gods of Google. He's the head of the research department. Google Docs. It sounds like a book. Anyway, go ahead. You made it. He's a fascinating guy. He's literally a rocket scientist. I mean, the stuff that they-- you should have heard of Danny when he was reading off his resume. It was frightening. I mean, this guy is genius. Anyway, I went up there and I said, look, what's going on with Google Tasks? You know, this is something that needs to be put in there. It's the last-- really, it's what runs it all out. And he said, yes, it is being worked on. He wasn't, of course, going to give any days. No one does. But he said there's a few people working on it. I believe it's one of their 20% time things, so. Hey, the hell. Nice. So are they still doing that individually? Are they allowing them to work on projects? So can you have your 20% project where you're working with three other, four other people? Because it used to be like you have your project and you'd work in a little vacuum. You weren't allowed to work together? I think you were, but they mostly didn't in the beginning. Well, they did say that what happens is, for example, someone asked what projects were Google? Like, which things have come out are from these 20% time? And Peter said that Gmail is one of them, although the creator says not really. The thing is, it's just like what you're saying, this creator created the Gmail or started to. And you said, look at what I'm doing. And they said, oh, wow, okay, let's put this to full time. I heard a little bit of trivia about the guy who was the head of the Gmail project. Apparently, and this is, again, third party sources. So don't quote me on television. No, we're. I've got a friend who has a friend who has a friend who has a friend. No. So apparently, the guy who ended up creating Gmail was working very, very closely with Matt Cuts in the beginning. And they were both working on the, basically, the quality control team. And it was a toss-up between which one of those guys was going to stay on quality control and which one was going to go to Gmail. So it could have very easily been Matt Cuts that created Gmail. And this other guy is our current Matt Cuts. Which is interesting. Yeah. He's still sporting a bald head. So I guess he's like, oh, it's just a heads up. I've already decided what I'm going to suggest to Matt to dress up as for Halloween this year. What's that? So for some reason, I was watching television over the last week, sometime, I was on cable. And then I remember that movie, Dumb and Dumber. Yeah. Okay. It was on. And the beginning of the movie, Jim Carrey plays a limousine driver, but the other guy, and I don't remember the actor's name, plays this guy who drives around in this van that's covered and looks like a dog. And it's like a portable pet grooming. Yeah. Yeah. Remember that van? You know, in this giant letters on the side of the van, it says mud cuts. And all you've got to do is change that U to an A. And you've got a pet's van, which is shaped like a big dog. So he's got to do it. That's awesome. Yeah. The actress needs Jeff's something. Jeff Bridges. Yeah. That's it. Jeff Bridges. No. Oh, forget the lesson. Anyway, that's awesome. I'm going to Photoshop and put his face on it and change it to my cut. And so tell him he's got to be that following this year. I don't know. I should get some, some press for that on your side. That'll get a little viral. Anyway, we're going to take a quick break and we come back. We're going to touch on what's next here. Page speed. I'm waiting to talk about this one. I've been playing with this. Yes. SEO 101 will be back right after recess. Hey, have you got the number for Jerry's Pizza? Look it up on localpages.com. Recess is over and SEO 101 is back in session. Only on webmasterradio.fm. We were just talking about a bunch of stuff there but start up with Google Tasks and Google research guide Peter Norvick. That's going to be our new nickname. I shouldn't have brought that up. Page speed. First of all, to me one of the more interesting things now we've all seen how Google was pushing page speed for a while there. They added it in the labs and all this stuff. When I first started I was like, "Oh, this is cool. I showed my site like crap." What does that mean? I thought, "Well, I better sit in on this." I sat in on this page speed meeting. First of all, I think there's my the OEA again. I think there's to tell us all that fast is better for sales so it was not. It's better for experiencing all that stuff. Very logical. It was pretty interesting when I started getting the stats. This is almost a quote. I did this pretty quickly. In side-by-side testing between a base site that hasn't been optimized and an optimized site. That's exactly the same content but only difference was things like, I think they used some gzip. They used some stuff that's compressing the files to make it faster. The optimized site got a 16% increase in conversions. Not only that, but there's a 5% increase in conversion price. Wow. Very interesting. That's pretty phenomenal. Yes. Really what I got out of the thing? There's a few other points here to come up. What I got out of the whole thing was, "Hello. This is so important. I'm almost going to put other stuff on my site on the backburner just to see how much of this is true." Makes sense, though. It really does. Speed is king now for a lot of people who are just getting his own page. I think you noted in our notes here, Rosten. Page speed is not necessarily tied to caffeine. Is that correct? Yes. I looked at my notes. I could not see them ever saying that. I don't recall it. I remember them people asking about caffeine and she wouldn't be committled. Obviously no one is. But when it's coming, it's in one data center right now. It's not being released yet, but they do expect to start rolling it out. But they never mentioned that page speed will be a part of that. Right. Because I'm currently in the process of writing a position paper on page speed and stuff, and we were talking a lot about it here in the office. I've got one analyst on my team that swears up and down that page speed has already been implemented. She swears up and down that she knows that there's no way it has not been just based on some of the things she's seen on sites she manages. That's interesting. Yeah. It makes sense that they would test it quietly. I mean, one of the things I remember when I was reading about this too for my course, I was teaching, that Matt Cutts was saying that, all right, it was the fact that no follow was being, you know, the page rank, the whole no follow page rank debacle. Yeah. Exactly. So it could very well be this too. I mean, I like to talk and recommend people to go and take a look at this. I mean, Google's got the page speed tool that they've released in Google Labs. It's basically, it requires Firefox. It requires Firebug, which is an outstanding plugin for Firefox. If you don't use it now, go out. As soon as you're done listening to us, not before, but when you're done listening to us, go out, download Firebug and put it in your Firefox browser and play with it. You will be astounded. But what this page speed tool that Google's created does is actually an add-on to the Firebug extension. So, when you go to a page, you open Firebug and there's two new tabs inside of Firebug. It says, one of them is page speed. And you click that and there's another button that you click and it will analyze the page you happen to be on at the moment. And it gives you very detailed, it gives you an A through F score with a number value. And it's standard, like everybody has in school. If it's, you know, if you've got a 73, you've got a C kind of thing. The cool thing about it, and you can go right now if you want to do this, is you can export those results for that page to a site that they've created just to track all this stuff called showslow.com, S-H-O-W-S-L-O-W.com. And like, it shows the last 100 ones that people had exported and you can click on. Like, the last one I saw I clicked on, somebody had done it for Facebook homepage. And there's just tons of data about what's happening, what the grade is. And then they actually break out, like, probably close to 20, 25 different segments of that grade, individual items. And each of those individual items are graded A through F for the score. Things like, is your cookie too large? Do you need to combine your style sheets into one style sheet to reduce the number of calls to the server? Lots of details like that. And each one is graded so you know which ones you're having problems with on that page. And then, even to make it even better, you can click through to the description and it takes you to the page speed help section of Google and it describes what it is, why it's an issue, and potentially what you can do to fix it. It's wonderful. Yeah, just looking at showslow now. And what it does is it actually aggregates information from Yslow and PageSpeed. Now, Yslow is what to bring out. Yslow is Yahoo's tool for showing just how fast your site is loading. And it gives you tips on how to improve that. So between, and these are all free, the tool in Google Webmaster Tools also for PageSpeed under labs, if it is, in Google Webmaster Tools you can see where your site fits in in terms of the averages online. Almost guaranteed it's going to be disappointing. I mean, with respect to be within two seconds, you're saying it's loaded. What would you say, 99.9% of sites aren't? Oh, yeah. That would be shocking if it was. I don't honestly know how I'm going to get my down to two seconds, but I'm pretty excited to try. That brings up a good point though, Ross, because there's a definite differentiation between PageSpeed and load time. Because PageSpeed is a lot of factors on your site, on your page, on your server that contribute to slow load times, but it's not your load time because load time also takes into consideration your particular bandwidth, your computer resources, how much memory is in your machine. There's a lot of things that are on your specific system that would impact load time. So there's definitely a break between the two. It's a good point. We're going to take a quick break and we get back. We're going to finish this talk, so I think that's pretty interesting. SEO 101 will be back right after recess. Hi, welcome to the SEO shop. Welcome back to SEO 101 on webmasterradio.fm with John Carcut, SEO manager for MediaWiz, and myself, Ross Don, CEO of Step 4th Web Marketing Inc. We were just talking about how there is a difference between load time and page speed. That something has been sort of nagging in the back of my mind that there had to be a difference there. And you're right. So how are they doing that then? They're just downloading the page and seeing how fast it loads on there. Is that the idea? My guess is if you look at the report you get inside of the tools, it never gives you an actual time. It tells you how big it is. I have a client. They actually scored AC. They were in 71. They scored a C. Their home page was 1.1 megabytes. What? 1.1 megabytes because you combine all the different pieces and all the external files. And they still got a C, which blew my mind. But nowhere in there did it say this is how long it took to download. It doesn't say that. Maybe go to that show slow site. It actually has a time indicator. But I haven't figured out what those numbers mean yet because they're not minutes and seconds. I don't know what they are. So I'm still working on that one. It's a new science really for us SEOs to consider this stuff. It's good. I'm tickled that we are. I mean, it's a really good thing. I started out as a web designer. So it's kind of been in the back of my head for a long time anyway. I'm just glad. It's interesting to me because it's from a web designer standpoint. If I put on my web designer hat, it's like thank you Google for forcing people to take a look at this. Forget the SEO hat and what it's going to do to rankings and things. But just from a design perspective and how to build user friendly sites, thank you for doing this. Exactly. And you know what? I bet this is just the beginning. Once this is being well embraced and things start to improve, next will be accessibility. Oh, yes. If not accessibility, it'll be. I don't think W3C compliance will ever really happen because that'll be just too crazy. But accessibility would be important. Something else to take into consideration. I want to say this before I forget. Page speed is also already an indicator and a factor. As for a fact, it's a factor in quality score for paid advertising. Yes. So it's not just your SEO that needs to worry about this page speed. It's going to impact your paid advertising and add words as well. And in fact, Miley, oh, you actually said that during her presentation. She said, and that was a hint I just gave you. She said, and it was long as long. But you know, it's not a hint because we came in and I was talking to one of our paid people in the office and he said, yeah, and he pulled up his management tool. I forget that's the software you can download from Google to manage your AdWords stuff. And there's a button you can mouse over and it shows there's like different pieces of the quality score. It would like give you a red, like they're not going to give you numbers, but they'll give you like a good, you know, or sucks. But they've added a third line already in this tool that says, um, uh, page speed. It's already in the tools. Now, for people who are wondering, uh, you know, is page speed. How much is it figuring in the algorithm? Uh, when it comes right down to it, I have a hunch that it's going to be important, but not nothing critical. I mean, it's not going to overtake your title tag or anything like that. Your content's got to be there. But, um, you know, all things being equal. If you have a faster page speed than your competitor, you're going to give it a ranking. You know, it's just that extra edge. If you're in a highly competitive space, you know, every little bit helps. And that's, that's one of those little bits. Exactly. It's, it to me, it's like, uh, it'll be more so than having that keyword in the domain. You know, like I always said, that's about two to five percent, depending on, you know, on the, on the day. I think it'll be, it'll be more than bolding or italicizing a keyword in your content as well. Yeah. But, you know, it's, it's still fairly small. However, if you have a really slow side though, I think it's also a good Trump effort thing. If it's really so. It's perfect sense. They wouldn't want you to show up. Yeah, it's going to be one of those things where there's going to be a threshold. Once you hit this threshold, the, the amount of impact it has increases exponentially. Yeah. The big cuts and slaps you in the head. Yeah. Let's put this way, it's not one of those pieces of the algorithm that's going to help you as much as it is if you do it wrong. It's going to hurt you. Exactly. Yeah. Now, one note here is that 80 to 90 percent of end users of the response time was, was actually in the front end. So what they mean by the front end is the first piece of code on a page. The first sense of the head, the header of your page, that's where a lot of those bulk ticks is slowing things down. And that can easily be changed just by changing the order of style sheets, minimizing HTTP requests, combining JavaScript, et cetera. Now, one of the things I thought was really cool is showed was how, I think it was Miley, showed how the navigational one particular site was Amazon. And it wasn't my, it was someone else who did also a good presentation at that same one. He showed how the navigation, the background was all one background instead of being individual images, which cut down on the HTTP requests. It was very simple, but brilliant. Yeah. Something else, putting on the web designer had again. You know, for a long time, we were told as designers, you know, you don't want to scale images. You want to create an image on a page that's the size it's supposed to be, so you don't have distortion in your images, those kind of things. But going through this tool and looking at some of the recommendations they made, it made perfect sense that if you have the same image on a page or on, you know, on your site that's going to be used over and over again in different sizes, all you have to do is load the largest size because it's going to have to load that one eventually anyway. And then all the smaller ones, you resize them using CSS. So what happens is you only have to call that image one time instead of a bunch of different times for different sizes. And it kind of goes against what we're taught as designers to begin with, but from this perspective, it makes a lot of sense. Now, one of the things that I was just looking at my notes here, I almost forgot to mention was there's another cool tool. Looking at it now, it's really awesome. It's called webpagetest.org, and it is intense. It will give you a full layout of each page and where they stand and all the issues that you're dealing with. And from an understanding, it'll help you improve your site from my glimpse here of it. Now, what else have we got here? Well, before we get off a page speed, I've been looking for, and maybe we can reach out to the audience. If anybody knows of a tool or an online application that can help me, I'm looking for a tool that I can put in a list of URLs and it comes back from my machine of a load time. And again, it's separated from page speed. This is actual load time. I can't find one that does it in bulk. So if anybody knows one, please shoot me an e-mail, send me a tweet, anything you can. I'm looking for that hard, so I'm reaching out to you guys. Cool. If you're a developer you want to make one, we'll definitely plug it on the show. And if you, when you do find out, we can always plug it as well since we're asking the community anyway. Yeah. Let me see here. Just going to look through my notes here. Matt Cutts was talking about the Google report card, how they pretty much look pretty horrible from their own SEO. They weren't really following their own guidelines. Do you see that? I did see that. That was very interesting. I haven't read it in detail. I skimmed it. But it was interesting that they published it. I guess I wasn't surprised. It just didn't expect it. Does that make sense? Well, yeah, I didn't either. I mean, it seemed like an odd thing for them to do. But they did it and I guess that's good. They're showing to try to be a good example. The one thing that worries me about it is that there's going to be some new SEOs or somebody that wants to take shortcuts. They're going to take that and they're going to reform it and make it into their SEO audit. And I haven't read it in detail enough to know is that a good idea or not. But it's like, I can see it coming, that there's going to be fly-by-night SEO firms using that format almost exactly as they're reporting. So that'll be interesting to see what happens with that. Now, one thing with a page speed thing, I want to know before we cut out here. One of the guys went up there and talked about stuff that was way beyond me. But it was fascinating and I definitely want to know more about it. Have you heard of, come on, where's my notes here? Squid, squid cash? Squid cash. Isn't there like a reality show all about that? Squid cash.org, and it allows you to optimize your web delivery on a global basis too. I mean, it's essentially web content distribution and it's free. So there you go. That's for better not. And he swore by it and it seemed extremely advanced but has a lot of the abilities that people need without all the expense. So what would it, if I used it, I know just basically what does it do for me? Here we go, I'll read it to you. Squid is a caching proxy for the web supporting HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and more. It reduces bandwidth and improves response times by caching and reusing frequently requested web pages. Squid is extensive access controls and makes a great server accelerator. It runs on most available operating systems including Windows and it's licensed under the GNU-GPO. So is it a server tool you apply to your website or is it something you apply to your own machine to help speed up? That's I guess what I don't know. My machine, I gather. So basically it's doing cloud caching, it sounds like. Just like a lot of things are moving to the cloud apps and data and even cloud computing and cloud hosting. It sounds like they're doing cloud caching. It says finally squid's advanced content routing configuration allows you to build content clusters to root and load balance requests via a variety of web servers. So that must be there. So you have a web server in all the various countries where you have business potential and use the squid to route content for people who are searching for a different area. It gets to keep your page speed high no matter where you're hosting. Interesting. For anyone who wants to get into the high level of stuff that's it. I certainly want to feel like I've got some brain energy available a bit. Just get a few shots of Patron you'll be good to go. Exactly. Well thank you John. It does good.
