A spirited mother and civic activist, Martha Maddux had just turned 50 when she was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's in 1997. Her husband Carlen was a career journalist, editor, and magazine owner in the Tampa Bay area who also was Martha's primary caregiver for 17 years.
