Right so the jury is going to get back to work this morning at nine o'clock and as you mentioned on friday That sort of bomb shell announcement noon time when they had a note that they sent to the judge and we all went back into the court room And you know, there's this drama like what could they possibly be asking? And then the judge read the note out loud to everyone in the courtroom And it basically said after exhaustive efforts looking over everything We cannot reach a verdict a unanimous verdict So that sort of put the hush over the crowd and inside the courtroom and definitely outside as well And so she listened to both sides and then she said okay We're just going to send the jury back out again and we're going to tell them to keep deliberating Hmm Go ahead, least hey steve have you noticed like have they stepped up security outside the last couple of days? A big big time. I was actually just going to say that You know, I noticed it on friday suddenly When karen read and her legal team came in and out and you know the ochee family They were instead of coming on one side of the courthouse. They were taking them on a secret different way with extra security And I mean literally on friday, I saw so many police officers. I actually counted because I was like wow I don't know where all these people came from but there was definitely more security and by the way Yes, uh friday afternoon The police had to break up both sides that were outside the supporters of can read and the supporters are a keef literally getting in the middle We were at the cameras rolling not as many as netflix at but we had plenty of cameras rolling And I thought they were going to be punches so they're brawling in the streets now So steve they're a camera cruise from all over the world right like france germany Everywhere I mean keep arriving and and they're also people coming from everywhere And when you talk to these people it's people that are on vacation summer vacation. They're tourists They've heard about it people are just literally flocking to detem to come see This imagine that so you've got a summer vacation. You say let's drive from alabama to boston So we can stand outside a courthouse in detem And a mother and a daughter did that and they were coming from dallas texas and did that so what didn't even alabama Wow And you just look at them and say why and you know, yeah It's it's just uh, it's incredible to see and of course now that they're entering not just the fifth day of delirations But this trial started four months ago april may june and it's july so quickly steve What's the consensus the jury announcing they were dead locked on friday? Is this a good or a bad thing for karen read? Right. So I think the thing is is that nobody knows What that breakdown is of why they can't reach the unanimous verdict is it 11 You know the 12 members of the jury obviously then the two alternate So if you take the number 12 is that 11 to 1 And 11 people are trying to convince that 12th person or as I was saying to people over the weekend It might be six six and keep in mind it's six men and it's six women So is it down the gender line is it down something? I mean and that's going to change everything because as they deliberate Since we don't know that number How many people can you convince to come to your side? Now I was talking to a friend of mine over the weekend who is in the court system And he says if they come back again Let's say it is ruled that to deadlock Then everybody finds out what the jurors were thinking and how the jurors voted Well, not necessarily because they don't have to give they're not supposed to give the number the breakdown the judge You know says when they write a note do not tell me that number But last year in the lopes trial They did give the number it was 11 to one and then we quickly found out why it was 11 to one But they're not supposed to do that and now the judge if they come back again today deadlock She has to read them that two-year-old regas charge This is no other jury that can come up with a better decision than you and send the back out But then when they come back another time after she reads that charge then she has to declare a mistrial Wow And then the options I believe would be a new trial Dropping the case or offering a plea deal Right and somebody said to me on friday, they said even if they Decided to do it again. They might try the case somewhere else like far away Like in the other side of the state like pits field or spring field or somewhere So because they couldn't what's happening right now that they they I don't I don't see how they could do this again Around two of this and and it would happen probably in the winter or in the fall And you know that just be putting people out there in the middle of winter that's pretty hard to believe all right So that's the voice of Steve Cooper channel seven news here in boston and across new england standing outside the courthouse as the jury prepares to come back For a fifth day steve.
