Good morning, Chris Lawrence with you. This is Metro News this morning, getting your day ready in West Virginia with the news and information you're going to need. Forecast today, hot and humid weather is back, temperatures climbing back into the night. He's going to feel like it's over a hundred. Plenty of breaks in water if you have to work or play outside today. Full forecast coming up in just a moment. Right now, though, let's get caught up on the news of the day in West Virginia at the Metro News anchor desk. This morning is Kerry, who to say? Good morning, Kerry. Good morning, Chris, a Georgia family on its way to Charleston wasn't in the air long before crashing Sunday afternoon. Initial information from the National Transportation Safety Board says the five-member family, including boys ages 10 and 12, were only in the air for 12 minutes Sunday afternoon when their flight tracking data disappeared in upstate New York. The NTSB says there were storms in that flight path near Sydney, New York. Investigators say the crash debris field was a mile long, and they found all major parts of the single engine piper except the plane's rudder. The family had been in Cooperstown, New York for a youth baseball tournament. They were heading home to Georgia, but were scheduled to stop at Yeager Airport in Charleston to refuel. The NTSB says it should have its preliminary report done in 30 days. Its final report on the crash will take about a year to complete. I'm Jeff Jenkins, WV, MetroNews.com. Governor Jim Justice says there's no reason to wait until there's a new governor and new legislature to further cut the personal income tax. Justice wants lawmakers to make a 5% cut later this year. He says waiting isn't any good. I believe it's no better time than now on just about anything. But state Senate Finance Committee Chairman Eric Taras says justice's proposal is not realistic. No, I don't. I think this is more campaign fodder. I'm on his way out. Taras spoke with Metro News affiliate WMOV radio in Ravenswood. More West Virginia students will be eligible to apply for the Hope Scholarship Program. State Treasurer Riley Moore announcing Tuesday. The program has met state law requirements to open it up to all school-age children beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. Metro News statewide correspondent Brad McElhaney explains. Until now, the scholarship has applied to students leaving the public school system or kindergarten students entering school for the first time. So students already enrolled in private school, for example, have not been eligible. When the change becomes active, any non-public school student could draw down state dollars for education spending in compliance with Hope's other requirements. The Treasurer's Office says the change will allow 30-40,000 students to apply for the program. Brad also says another plaintiff is laying claim to millions of dollars from the businesses owned by Governor Jim Justice and his family is asking a federal court to get moving. Five-mile energy wants a federal judge to speed up the debt collection from the justice company's concerned the assets will run out. That's because there are so many competing interests in the court system for assets of the justice companies. The concern is that a claimant not appropriately positioned could lose out to the others as justice assets are divided in court. Read more from Brad at wvmetronus.com. A Detroit man will serve consecutive life terms for a Montagelia County murder. Montagelia County Circuit Court Judge Paul Gewaltney sentenced Michigan resident Cleodiceps to consecutive terms for first-degree murder, kidnapping and conspiracy for the dark-related killing of Matt Moore. As a person of faith, Moore's mother, Sheila Harvey, wants to forgive her son's killer. And as a person of faith, I should. That's what God wants me to do. But my soul cannot do it. And I'm gonna drop ever be able to forgive you. Harvey testified during the victim impact portion of the sentencing. I'm Mike Nolting for wvmetronus.com. The company selected by the Nicholas County Board of Education to build a new PK-8 school. Greg Glade Creek says it will take about three years to build. Board President Chip Perrine says Clarksburg-based city construction has a good reputation of finishing early. The longer they're in there, the less money they make, so I really believe I think it'll be quicker than the 1200 days. The school will replace Somersville Middle School, which was destroyed in the June 2016 flood. Some areas of the state had nearly two weeks of 90-plus degree heat in June. National Weather Service meteorologist Gabe Warren says it was hot, but no records were broken. In general, it was a warm month across much of the state. We were overall probably, in general, one to three degrees above normal. That does not put us into record-breaking territory. The first few days of this week have been hot, but more comfortable. The humidity is forecasted to return today. The Charleston Stormmiel Vergotta kicks off today. Mayor Amy Schuller Goodwin says she's proud to bring the event back for a third year in a row. We didn't just bring it back because Amy thought it was a great idea. Yes, I missed it and I thought it was a great idea, but everybody else wanted me to. What we said was, and I said year one, and I know I said it on this show. We'll bring it back and we're going to see. We're going to see how it goes. I'm a big believer in the year of three. This is year three. The first free concert is tonight along the canal boulevard with Shaggy. The event runs through Sunday. Today is one of the busiest travel days of the year on the West Virginia turnpike. Parkways authority executive director Jeff Miller says the travel period started last Thursday and will run through the weekend. It's been the busiest days of the entire year. Thanksgiving travel is always huge. Before the July, it seems to be the longest period of time that we have throughout the year in which we maintain a pretty high rate of traffic out there. This already is predicting up to 150,000 vehicles will pass through turnpike toll booths per day through Sunday. All right. Thank you, Kerry. Coming up in our background. We will hear more from Mayor Goodwin on the kickoff day of the Charleston Stormmiel Vergotta. And then Kyle Wiggs will join us with the check on sports as the preseason poll for the Big 12 football is out. Those stories are more still ahead. They went around there. They spend the summers out there. For two magical months, these smallmouths just flock into this bay. When they come, they come. Whether it's hunting and fishing news or just compelling stories about the enjoyment of the great outdoors. I've been wanting to see him this year, but I hadn't until we were two not in one night and we saw him and he was still in velvet. I knew that he was the biggest buck around here and I had wanted to kill him ever since soon. Outdoors covers it all Saturday mornings at 7.06 a.m. And for your daily fix. Outdoors today brings you two and a half minutes of news and notes from the woods and water every weekday morning on Metro News, the voice of West Virginia. Hi, this is Hoppe Kirchibel. Inviting you to join me weekdays from 10.06 to noon for Metro News Talk Line. Each day, I try to provide the very latest news and information about our state and our nation. I interview newsmakers and thought leaders who help us better understand these stories. Yes, I mix in my observations, but mostly I just want us to be better informed. So I'm inviting you to be my radio and streaming companion as we sort out and work through the news and information of each day. That's Talk Line weekdays, 10.06 to noon on this Metro News Radio Station. Kyle Wigs will have an update on sports in just a moment right now. In our background, as they say, you got a regatta and the third year of the resurrected Charleston Sternwheel Regatta gets going at noon today. Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin says it's the event of the year with real visitor numbers and real dollars. The mayor focuses more on the numbers in our background. So the first year we brought in a return on investment for our community. That's our businesses, not the City of Charleston proper. We don't get all that money, but 31 million are first year. 37 million return investment our second year. It is the signature event, not just for the City of Charleston, but the entire region. So those type of numbers, our businesses are lit. They're thrilled this week. Not only are they thrilled, but people who come from all over the country. We hosted last year about 220,000 plus people. And sure a majority of those folks, a lot of those folks are from Charleston, Huntington, Parker'sburg, Bluefield, Beckley, but 20% come from even out of state. And so when you're coming from out of state or number one, you know, D.C., Pittsburgh, these are markets and you know, you just had the governor on and there is no bigger champion of tourism and who understands how impactful and how powerful it is to have folks and numbers like that coming in for an event. Because by the way, they're going to spend the night and they're going to have breakfast and they're going to gas up. And so it is really, regatta has been one of many things that we've done here in the City of Charleston to really become an entertainment and sports destination. And then five day festival gets started at noon today and will stretch all the way through Sunday. Time to go to the sports desk. Cal Wigs is in and Cal, the preseason poll for the big 12 conferences out. Mountaineers are in the middle of the pack. Is that a surprise or is that what you expected? That's really what I expected. Now, my personal opinion, are they better than that? I think so. I think they are slightly better, but I personally didn't expect them to be picked any higher than they were in the preseason poll. They picked last year and used that as fuel the entire season. So perhaps it'll be used again. West Virginia selected seventh. Newcomer Utah was picked to win the league with 21st place votes. Kansas State was picked second with 19. Oklahoma State picked third with 14. Kansas received five first place votes and was selected fourth. Newcomer Arizona three first place votes and selected to finish fifth. State is sixth in West Virginia Central Florida. Texas Tech TCU in that top 10. So this latest round of expansion bringing in significantly better teams than the previous round of expansion. Utah and Arizona newcomers both received first place votes to win the league. The preseason offensive player of the year, Ollie Gordon, the running back from Oklahoma State defensive player of the year Travis Hunter of Colorado. WVU's only selection for preseason all league is offensive lineman Wyatt Milam. So that's the preseason poll and the preseason all conference team. It's out there and big 12 media days will be coming up next week. Veteran coach Mark Hatcher back in place is head boys basketball coach at Logan High School. Hatcher graduated from Logan in 1989. He was approved for his return this week. And he coached Logan previously for 15 seasons a tenure that ended in 2015. He won 236 games in a couple of state championships 2005 and 2010 baseball from Tuesday night. Cardinals beat the pirates seven to four. Nolan Gorman hit a grand slam for St. Louis. Reds got home runs from Will Benson and L.A. Taylor Cruz, they beat the Yankees in New York by four Baltimore to Seattle. Nothing. Thank you, Kyle. Weeked afternoon from three to six round out your day with Metro News Hotline. Dave Weekly and Coop, that duo start their discussion with sports on a West Virginia slant. And then the conversation spins off in every direction you can think of. Food, music, pop culture, entertainment, tech, pretty much anything but politics. They drove the line there. Check them out. Hotline. Good afternoon. Your West Virginia weather forecast temperatures quickly warming today as the heat index is going to make it feel like it's up over a hundred degrees. There's a high pressure system that's moving to the east. Real temperatures are going to be in the nineties and this evening across the lowlands. Drink your water. Sit in the shade as much as you can if you have to be outside. There's a more active weather pattern that'll move in this evening, possibly bringing some isolated shower and thunderstorm activity and those could get severe then. For tomorrow through Friday, stronger, more severe storms, more widespread for the Fourth of July holiday as that cold front is moving into West Virginia. But it'll dry out Friday night through Monday as that cold front moves to our east. And now you're up to date. Have yourself a good day for Kyle Wigs and Carrie Hootesack.
