Good morning, I'm Chris Lawrence, ready to get your day started and get you informed all you're going to need to know in West Virginia today. We'd be given the forecast, warm sunshine and increased heat, a lot hotter than Monday, but still stayin' dry. We'll check that full forecast comin' up in just a moment right now. Let's get up to date on the news of the day in West Virginia, filling in this morning for Carrie. Who to suck is Jeff Jenkins. Good morning, Jeff. - Good morning, Chris. Thank you. Governor Jim Justice says state revenue collections from the recently completed fiscal year may trigger a three to 4% new reduction in the state personal income tax justice. Also told a few state lawmakers at a Monday event he wanted to consider a deeper cut in a late summer special session. - So I wanna call you back and I wanna challenge you to some way, somehow try to do an additional 5% on the personal income tax. It'll be tough, but there's a way to do it and all of us can work together and try to figure out how to do it and how to do it now. - Now, Justice held that announcement Monday saying the state collected more than $820 million more in revenue than it projected last fiscal year. Justice also saying during that Monday event that he wants state lawmakers to deal with childcare during that upcoming special session. Justice has previously proposed a childcare credit, but it hasn't got much traction at the state house. - Pass my childcare tax credit. It was $4.2 million. It's next to nothing, but do you not understand that really and truly what we need in this state now is young people. - And Justice says young people and young families need assistance with childcare costs. State Division of Corrections now has new pay rates for the beginning of the state's new budget year, starting pay getting nearly $3,000 a year bump to $42,900. If that CO stays two years, their pay goes up to just shy $50,000 a year, not counting overtime. You can read more of the new rates at wvmetronews.com. Trust the city council has rejected the proposed resolution that supporters say would have kept police officers from targeting the homeless during the high profiles during will regatta. We're gonna make sure a good one says the accusations aren't true. - We are a very compassionate administration. We take care of folks who need help, but if somebody has a warrant out for their arrest, you will be arrested. - Councilman Chad Robinson says police officers are being unfairly blamed here. - It's a slap in the face. We can not sit here and tell our officers our municipal court what to do and what not to do. - The proposed resolution was rejected last night on a 19 to six vote regatta begins tomorrow. State police say they've made an arrest in connection with a woman's body found in a wooded area of Lincoln County last week, 35-year-old Tony Williamson was arrested in Parkersburg Monday charged with murder in the shooting death of 34-year-old Marissa Brangies. Brangies' body was found near heart. She died of a single gunshot wound. Williamson being held in the Parkersburg Correctional Center. In a separate case, authorities at the Parkersburg Correctional Center say inmate Gregory Dale Stewart's on the loose after failing to return to the lockup after being allowed to go to church on Sunday. Stewart's originally from Raleigh County. Authorities say his ankle monitor indicated that's where he was headed. One of the longest serving college presidents in the state is stepping down Concord University president, Kendra Bogus plans to retire next year. A statement forwarded to Metro News from Concord Board of Governors, Vice Chair Brad Lane says Bogus declined a new contract. She's been the president for 10 years, but she's been on the campus for 40 years. The presidential search committee met for the first time last night. The beginning of the fiscal year means changes in leadership on school boards and city councils across the state. In some cases, new school superintendents have been hired. That's the case in Cabell County where Tim Harder's seat was sworn in Monday. As a new school chief, he replaces Ryan Sacks, who is now the new superintendent in Berkeley County. In Beckley, Ryan Neal took the oath of office as the new mayor there in Wheeling, Denny Magruder is a new mayor and the new look council set to meet for the first time later today. A new campaign to find foster families in the state is seeing some success so far. - The first ever statewide collaborative campaign addressing the need for foster parents has seen much success after launching at the end of March, garnering the interest of around 400 families so far to help provide a home for a child. It's the first collaborative effort to do so by Mission West Virginia, the Department of Human Services, Etna Better Health and foster care agencies across the state. Mission WV recruitment program director Rachel Kinder says the goal has been expanding the reach of foster families across every youth demographic. - We just need to make sure that every county has a good number of foster families that take children of different ages, races, sibling groups, things like that, teenagers, so that children can stay as close to home as possible. - Kinder says those interested in learning more can visit wefosterwv.org. I'm Kat Skelden, wvmetronews.com. - The fire is still burning underground at Allegheny Metco's Longview Mine near the Barbara Upshire County line. It started Sunday, no injuries have been reported, there's no production at the large mine at this time, fire suppression crews have been on the scene. Stay due each other, crews hope to get route 10 in Southern Cabell County back open later this morning after a tractor trailer lost its load last night. This was a big load, a 100 foot long 16 ton still beam. The wreck happened at 8.30 last night and getting into out of the road hasn't been easy. - All right, thank you, Jeff. Coming up in our back grounder, Governor Jim Justice says the revenue collections were so strong it may trigger another cut in the state income tax. We'll hear more about that. And then Cal Wigs has to check on sports. It's all still ahead. - The high school football season is fast approaching and you can get ready with video previews of your favorite teams. Award-winning host Chris Lawrence has been tracking down hunting and fishing stories for more than 25 years. - And sure enough, you know, he's standing there and he's looking at me. Why can't keep the crossbow, you know? It was just shaking. I finally took some deep breaths. I thought, okay, calm down then. He crossed the creek and he come right up. Picture perfect. Twenty-two yards right in front of me. That was it. - Whether it's hunting and fishing news or just compelling stories about the enjoyment of the great outdoors. - A lot of it depends on what the fish are feeding on. If they're targeting crawfish real heavy, then you're gonna be bouncing stuff along the bottom. If they're up chasing the minnows, then you're gonna try to match that with swim baits or crank baits, spinner baits. - West Virginia Outdoors covers it all Saturday mornings at 7.06 AM. - And for your daily fix. - Outdoors today brings you two and a half minutes of news and notes from the woods and water every weekday morning on Metro News, the voice of West Virginia. Hi, this is not be courteable. Inviting you to join me weekdays from 10.06 to noon for Metro News Talk Line. Each day, I try to provide the very latest news and information about our state and our nation. I interview newsmakers and thought leaders who help us better understand these stories. Yes, I mix in my observations, but mostly I just want us to be better informed. So I'm inviting you to be my radio and streaming companion as we sort out and work through the news and information of each day. That's Talk Line, weekdays, 10.06 to noon on this Metro News radio station. (upbeat music) Kyle Wigs will join us with a check on sports in just a moment. Right now though, in our Metro News background, Governor Jim Justice says year in revenue collections will trigger a three or four percent further reduction of the state's personal income tax. The governor also said he's wanting more on top of that. We hear more of what he had to say Monday during an event at the Culture Center in our backgrounder. So I want to call you back and I want to challenge you to some way, somehow try to do an additional five percent on the personal income tax. It'll be tough, but there's a way to do it and all of us can work together and try to figure out how to do it and how to do it now. It's not our money. It's the people's money. And if there's a way to do it and put more money back into people's pockets, you know what'll happen? They'll spend it here. And the multiplier effects on those dollars will absolutely make us better. But on top of all that, you know what'll happen? If we can get rid of our state income tax and you can't get rid of it, sitting around scared to death all the time. Mind to store properly, but for God's sakes of living, don't be afraid, dare, dare to be first. Now with all that being said, nothing, nothing will drive population growth and goodness to this state anymore than getting rid of our personal income tax. - Justice says that special session will be in either August or September. Time now to go to the sports test. Kyle Wigs is in. Kyle, the steeple chase event is the one where you run about 40 laps and then jump in over a pond. Is that how that's kind of what it looks like? - Yeah, there's water involved. - Right, exactly. But West Virginian's gonna be doing that at the Olympics. - Well, a WVU athlete, Kayla McCabe, actually a native of Canada. She made the US Olympic team for her native Canada last week, but she's an adopted West Virginian, certainly part of the WVU track and field team. And her coach Sean Clary on sports line last night, said McCabe will continue her training for the Olympics right here in Morgantown. She'll stay in Morgantown, continue her training all the way up until the time that she has to leave for Paris and she'll run her first race, her first steeple chase event on August 4th in Paris. And Clary again, very excited about another WVU representative in the Olympics. - It's pretty exciting, you know, we've had five or six kids qualify for the Olympics since 2008, starting with Megan Metcalf at that point. And it's just great to see. - WVU track and field coach Sean Clary from Monday night sports line show, you can hear that complete conversation at wvmetgronews.com, not much baseball. Last night, the Pirates, the Reds, the Orioles, they were all off, although a former Shepherd University player, Brenton Doyle had a big night, Doyle went three for four, a double to home run, three RBI, Colorado, he up Colorado beat Milwaukee by a final of eight to seven, Metz beat Washington nine to seven, Houston over Toronto, three to one, NBA free agency, the run of Clay Thompson with the Golden State Warriors, has come to an end. Thompson signing a $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks that ends again, a 13 year run with the four time champion, Golden State Warriors. And Boston Celtics star Jason Tatum has agreed on a five year, $314 million contract extension. That's the largest contract in NBA history. The Celtics, by the way, are for sale as the general partners have shown their intentions to put that franchise up for sale. It is worth many billions of dollars at this point. - Thank you, Kyle.
