This is Metro News this morning, bringing you this morning's biggest news headlines from across the state. It's Friday, June 21st, 2024. Good morning. I'm Chris Lawrence, and we are ready to get the day going in West Virginia with all the most up-to-date information you need. The West Virginia weather forecast for starters is extremely hot and sunny again today. We'll see the potential for heat danger, so if you're working outside, keep that in mind. Full forecast coming your way in just a moment. Right now, though, the first update on the state's news of the morning from the Metro News Anchor desk with Carrie Huda Segg. Good morning, Carrie. Good morning, Chris. Investigators are looking for answers in a Lincoln County tragedy. State police are trying to piece together how a two-year-old girl and her three-year-old brother wandered out of their home on Scary Creek near Hamlin Wednesday night and ended up in a pond. The girl died. The boy's hospitalized and in stable condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Troopers have charged her parents, 30-year-old Jack Parsons, Jr. and 24-year-old Tara Atkins with felony child neglect causing death and felony child neglect causing injury. They are in the Western Regional Jail and $100,000 bond each. Parsons says he was doing yard work and thought the children had gone inside when they weren't there. He and Agnes began searching for the kids and found them in the pond. Parsons says he began performing CPR on the little girl. State police say in the investigation is active and ongoing. The call came into troopers at about 930 Wednesday night. I'm Jeff Jenkins, WV, Metro News.com. Meanwhile, a possible drowning in Jackson County is under investigation. It happened just after 11 o'clock Thursday morning at a home in the Goldtown area. Sheriff Ross Melinger says a two-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Charleston firefighters are working to determine what caused a fire that damaged three homes on the city's west side. The fire broke out just before 9 o'clock Thursday night on West Washington Street. Everyone got out safely and no one was hurt. The upper rotunda of the state Capitol has a new look. Four new murals were unveiled and dedicated during a Thursday morning ceremony hosted by Governor Jim Justice on West Virginia Day. Those murals included depiction of the Battle of Philippine, Historical Harpers Ferry, Seneca Rocks, and the state seal. John Canning says his artists took their time to make sure to get every detail right. You just can't look at an artist picking up a brush and immediately start doing work. There's so much intellectual thought, research, history. The state had plans to add the murals when the Capitol was built in the 1920s but didn't have the funding back then. Those traveling through downtown Wheeling will now be able to visit a statue honoring the first governor of West Virginia, Arthur Borman. Governor Justice joined state leaders to dedicate the statue following West Virginia Day celebrations at the Capitol. Justice says Borman proved to be the right man for the job. But there was a time in the middle of the heat toward the end maybe of the Civil War that really and truly somebody had to step up. The statue depicts Borman during his inauguration speech back in 1863. Among the state's 161st birthday celebrations Thursday. Happy birthday West Virginia! Happy birthday to you! Many gathering at the state culture center to sing happy birthday and to cut the cake. First Lady Kathy Justice also announced the winner of the West Virginia Hot Dog Sauce Contest. Calhoun County resident Paige Tony came in first place. She and her family have been making the recipe for the Calhoun County High School Marching Band for decades. My mom was band director. Her mom made gallons. So since the 40s this recipe has been around being made as this band was your hot dog. It's quite old. It may be older than that and we're still looking but we know at least the 40s. Tony received a $500 gift card as the top prize. Two major candidates hoping to be the next governor of West Virginia spent West Virginia Day working. Democratic gubernatorial nominee and Huntington Mayor Steve Williams was busy working on how to combat the drug epidemic. I'm sharing a few meetings on how we deal with the opioid settlement and how we start telling showing others around the country how to be able to spend that money and infrastructure and things like that. His opponent Republican nominee state Attorney General Patrick Morrissey held a campaign event Thursday night. Morrissey meanwhile says he'll continue to advocate for women's sports following a rally in Charleston this week. The event included athletes from the Lincoln Middle School track and field team who protested the participation of transgender student Becky Pepper Jackson at a Harrison County track meet. Morrissey says it's unfair for girls to compete against a biological boy. I think it's a matter of basic common sense. I have not met anyone who's been able to make a really compelling argument as to why it's so important that men play sports with women. Read more at wvmetronews.com. The hot weather isn't over just yet. National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Curtis says a heat advisory continues through tomorrow night with high temperatures in the 90s. The really difficult part is the humidity because we're seeing two points in the upper 60s to lower 70s and that really makes the air feel pretty humid. The first day of summer arrived today early on Thursday due to the leap year. Temperatures will be back in the 80s on Monday before topping the 90s again Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be no public memorial for basketball legend Jerry West. Instead, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to four funds set up at WVU. West died last week at the age of 86. Thank you, Kerry, coming up in our background or Calhoun County resident Paige Tony. As Kerry mentioned, the winner of the First Lady's hot dog saws contest will hear from her talking about that hot dog sauce and then Joe Mercado is at the sports desk as they're getting ready to celebrate with a parade in Boston with West Virginia. West Virginia Joe Missoulo will be at the head of the parade. We'll talk to Joe about that and the rest of the day sports. It's all still ahead. It's two hours of sports conversation to wrap up your weekend. It's the city net Sunday night sports line. Hey, this is Travis Jones. It's a perfect weekend sports wrap up on your favorite Metro News affiliate. Or watch the show at wvmetrodews.com. So head Joe Mercado in this week on Sports for Kyle Whigs. They'll have an update in just a moment. Right now on our back grounder Calhoun County resident Paige Tony is the winner. First Lady Kathy Justice is hot dog sauce contest. Tony honored during West Virginia Day activities Thursday at the Culture Center in Charleston and talk to Metro News about that special sauce. This sauce has been made at least since the 40s. My mom was being director and her mom made this sauce. Sorry. And we make gallons and gallons of it. You know, you get together and we would make it and freeze it and have it for the football games. Now we serve it at the Calvin County Wood Festival. So that's a fair festival that they have each year in June. So they sell it there. And anyone that comes in that has moved away always wants to know where the Bambu's your hot dog sauce is. They want some Bambu's or hot dogs. What's so special about it? Anything you put in it that makes it taste that good? It's the taste. It is. It's a very great taste. But it's got so many things in it. And it's not something you can throw together quickly. You've got to cook. And then add the breadcrumbs at the end. And that's what takes the vinegar to the perfect taste at the end with the breadcrumbs. Is it something that you've worked on for years or just you nail it down? It has been tweaked, yeah. Because the first Bambu's just hot dog sauce that we had seen, it had tomato sauce or tomato juice. So you had to cook it longer with the juice. Now it's ketchup. So it's a little bit different than the ones before. So it's been tweaked along the way, but it's perfect now and we love it. It's got just enough mustard in it and sugar and vinegar and I hope everybody makes it so we can have it at all. The place is what we go now. I'm sure a lot of friends and family and people from back home at Calhoun County have tasted it. There's kind of audience from all over the state tasting. This is amazing, yes. We've gotten it in a couple other counties because some of us have branched off. But now maybe when we go to events in other counties we'll see this sauce being sold at the athletic boosters, yeah. And she got $500 for winning that contest. Now to the sports desk, Joe Mercado is in Joe. Joe Mercado Joe Missoula is going to be at the head of the parade today for the Boston Celtics. That's right, Chris, the former WVU point guard will tote the Larry O'Brien NBA championship trophy around the city of Boston later this morning as the Celtics will make the tour for the championship parade. Missoula has been spotted taking the trophy around Boston since wrapping up the title at home on Monday and taking a number of photos with fans. The Celtics won their 18th NBA championship with a four to one series victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. And today's parade actually canceled the final day of classes for Boston public schools switching to football. Now a mere letter gene Charles became the 15th member of the WVU football recruiting class of 2025 on Wednesday when he verbally committed to become a mountaineer. The six foot five, three hundred five pound defensive lineman credited the line coach Andrew Jackson for his role in recruiting the four star prospect to Morgantown. Leonard Jean Charles says his strength comes in the trenches playing against the run. I'm a big one stop again. I can still have the gaps to easily. I'm very quick on my feet where I think I got longer arms than most people with 86 and 20 stands. So I did use my leverage to a few wind blocks. You can check out the entire city net statewide sports line interview with Leonard Jean Charles at wvmetronews.com. He is set to enroll early at WVU in January of 2025. A week after his passing, the family of basketball legend Jerry West announced that they will honor West's wishes for a private ceremony and there will be no public memorial. West died last Wednesday at age 86. Los Angeles Clippers, who West most recently worked for as a consultant, announced that gifts in West memory can be made to West Virginia University, including academic and basketball scholarships named after West and his wife, Karen. The Edmonton Oilers will play their final home game tonight of the season in the hopes of extending the Stanley Cup finals to a decisive game. The Oilers host the Florida Panthers in game six of the finals tonight at 8 p.m. Florida won the first three games of the series before the Oilers fought back to take the last two and force a game sick. Thank you, Joe. Join me tomorrow morning on Metro News for West Virginia Outdoors. An hour long conversation about hunting and fishing in the mountain state. You can tune in at 706 live on the radio statewide or the live stream at our website wvmetronews.com. After the show's over, if you happen to miss it, we do post the entire thing as a podcast at all podcast sites as well at wvmetronews.com. Now that he's commentary. Here's the voice of Metro News, Hoppy Kerchival. Chris, it has been two years this month since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. The decision eliminated the federal right to an abortion and sent the issue back to the states. Since then, at least 14 states, including West Virginia, have passed laws prohibiting all abortions except in very limited circumstances. However, that does not mean women in those states who want abortions stop getting them. New figures from the Gutmacher Institute, a leading reproductive rights organization, show tens of thousands of women are traveling to other states to receive abortion procedures or have abortion pills dispensed. According to the Gutmacher data, 171,000 women traveled out of state for abortions in 2023, more than twice the number who traveled across state lines in 2019 before Roe was overturned. The vast majority of West Virginia women seeking abortions in 2023 traveled to four of the five border states. According to Gutmacher, 820 West Virginia women went to Maryland, 600 to Pennsylvania, 590 to Virginia, and 232 Ohio in 2023. Kentucky, like West Virginia, has a restrictive abortion law. Clearly, West Virginia's ban has driven more women elsewhere to seek abortions, but many likely would have traveled anyway. In some instances, abortion clinics in surrounding states were closer than West Virginia's one clinic in Charleston. Notably, according to Gutmacher, the number of abortions performed in 2023, the first full year after Roe was overturned, increased by 11% over 2020, the last year for which comprehensive estimates are available. According to Gutmacher, it is also the highest number and rate measured in the United States in over a decade. The last time over one million abortions were performed in one year was in 2012. Predictably, states that permit abortions that border states with bans saw the largest increases in 2023. Abortions increased by 77% in neighboring Virginia, with women traveling from West Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. Illinois saw a 71% increase with women traveling from as far away as Texas and Louisiana. For half a century, abortion opponents fought to overturn Roe, and they were finally successful in 2022. Legislators in many states, including West Virginia, reacted quickly by outlawing abortions. However, the data show, those policies did not stop abortions. They just moved them to other states. Chris? Thanks, Hop! Catch Hoppy Show, Metro News Talk Line, weekdays at 10.06 on the radio, or the livestream at www.metronews.com. Your West Virginia weather forecast and extended heat wave will continue right into the weekend, courtesy of all that high pressure. Afternoon heat indexes, the fields like temperature, as they call it, are going to reach the 90s to low 100s in many lowlands across the state today and tomorrow. That'll result in the potential for moderate and heat-related impacts. There is a cold front that'll approach from the West late Sunday and Monday. That could bring with it the chance for shower and thunderstorm activity. Heavy downpours might accompany any of those. Brief relief from the mid-upper 90-degree temperatures on Monday, but then we'll see them come back for Tuesday and Wednesday. And now you're up to date. Have yourself a great day and a great weekend for Hoppy Courageable. Joe Mercado and Kerry Hootesack. I'm Chris Lawrence, and this is Metro News, the voice of West Virginia.
