So what rude things are you doing to restaurant staff? This is West Michigan's morning news. Steve Kelly and Brett McKeanish Schmidy is back with us soon. He heads up the franchise consulting company, a restaurant industry expert. And one of his restaurants happens to be in Spain this morning. Nick Nianakis back. Nick, thanks for doing this today. You bet, Steve, and good morning Michigan. Hope everyone's doing well. Talk to us a little bit about... I'm looking at a list that may be the same as yours. And it's kind of fun because I don't do any of these things. I just know it. But I've seen it done as somebody who's on the other side of the counter. What are we doing that's just so rude? You know, as my kids would say, it's cringy, some of the things that people do. And you know, the list that came out on u.gov, the number one thing that people do that is not acceptable is eat the food and then say they didn't like it and refuse to pay for it. It's unreal. Yeah. I mean, if you take a bite and it's burned or something, I get it, but don't eat it and then say you're not going to pay for it. Right. I send it back. I think we have the same list and kids, unsupervised, has to be super... I mean, it's a liability for waitstaff, right? Well, it is, you know, and if you're spending good money and things are getting more and more expensive to go out to eat, if you're spending good money, you don't want kids running around screaming and yelling, right? You want to go and enjoy your meal and parents that do that. I mean, come on. Right? Again, be a good human being. How about this one, Nick? If you're going to a restaurant that you know is going to be most likely busy, let's say on a weekend or whatever, and you have a big party, eight or more, letting you guys know as a staff is helpful, right? I mean, I know that there's not such a thing for most places as reservations anymore, but you know, we always, if we've got a big group, try to call ahead and let them know, and maybe that's not the right spot, right? Yeah. And you know, I think if you do have a big group, you do want to call ahead, give the heads up, you know, whether it's to get prepped, they might ask you what kind of food items you're thinking about so that they can get ready, it keeps moving just that much more efficiently for other, you know, diners and for the staff. And I promise you, if you show a modicum of human decency to any restaurant tour, whether they're franchise or not, they're going to be so grateful, you're probably going to get a better meal, you're probably going to get better service, and it's just going to be a happier experience. Is it that what it's all about? Right, we talked before, bottom of the hour news about trying to get the waitstaff attention. I understand people are busy. It's the finger snapping that gets you, right? Yeah. Whistling's okay. Finger snapping. Not so good. My wife's got the whistle, I can't. What about, I mean, it's more expensive now, right? Inflation, everything's, but what about getting into the restaurant and then either complaining or debating about the prices? Yeah, you shouldn't be eating out if that's the case. So another is when people bring their own food items into a restaurant. It sounds unreal, but it happens, you know, it's not a picnic spot. Go to the park. Don't bring your food to the restaurant. I like that. Let's say, and I was at a meeting last night at a restaurant and we were there for a long time. But the waitstaff really cool about it and they're like, you know, we're here till 10. But what about staying too long at a place once you've cashed out? Yeah, you know, these are people that have families and lives and just be respectful or let them know and say, Hey, let me, let me, you know, take care of you. I need to stay here a little longer. We got some business to take care of most of these things and I'm going to be willing to bet that 99% of all Michiganders are listening to this thing. Well, this is so blatantly obvious. It's the 1% that, you know, just kind of ruins it. And if you just show a little bit of respect, it goes such a long way, you know, we've got enough stuff on our plates all of us to deal with that we don't need to create more issues for people.
